Abstract:In terms of the mechanisms of methanol synthesis from synthesis gas and methanol dehydration, it was predicted that the yield of dimethyl ether (DME) would be greatly increased if the inter-dispersion of the oxide particles in the catalyst was enhanced. For comparison, 4 methods-- bi-hydrolysis precipitation and three other methods were used to prepare the catalysts: (1) Low-dispersion mixing: A commercial Cu/Zn/Al methanol catalyst having a size range of 20--40 mesh was mechanically mixed with a dehydration catalyst {gamma}-alumina with the same size range; (2) High-dispersion mixing: The two catalysts used in 1 were ground together to {minus}200 mesh and pelletized and then crushed to 20--40 mesh; (3) Co-precipitation impregnation as reported in a cited reference; (4) Bi-hydrolysis precipitation: An aqueous solution of mixed nitrates of copper and zinc and an aqueous solution of NaAlO{sub 2} were simultaneously dropped into a beaker containing some deionized water. A precipitate was formed which was filtered, washed, dried and calcined. The particle size of the catalysts prepared by methods 3 and 4 charged into the reactor were in the same range as those by methods 1 and 2. Catalysts prepared by methods 1, 2, 3 and 4 are designated as Cat-1, Cat-2, Cat-3more » and Cat-4 respectively. The inter-dispersion of the oxides particles were in the order of Cat-1 < Cat-2 < Cat-3 < Cat-4. The catalysts were evaluated for activity in a tubular flow reactor with a feed having a mole composition of H{sub 2}/CO/CO{sub 2} = 64/31/5 under 270 C, 3 MPa and a space velocity of 2000 h{sup {minus}1}.
