Abstract:In this paper, we establish a Cheeger finiteness theorem for Berwald manifolds. Moreover, a Cheeger type estimate on injectivity radii for Finsler manifolds is obtained and the existence of the center of mass of a Berwald manifold is proved.

Abstract:Finsler manifolds are differentiable manifolds equipped with Riemannian metrics without the quadratic restriction. In this paper, some recent developments and new results on curvatures and fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are summarized briefly. The contents contain the growth of fundamental groups, the entropy of manifolds and fundamental groups, the first Betti number and the finiteness of fundamental groups.

Abstract:AbstractIn this paper, we establish a universal volume comparison theorem for Finsler manifolds and give the Berger–Kazdan inequality and Santalá's formula in Finsler geometry. Based on these, we derive a Berger–Kazdan type comparison theorem and a Croke type isoperimetric inequality for Finsler manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper the relationship between the Ricci curvature and the fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are studied. We give an estimate of the first Betti number of a compact Finsler manifold. Two finiteness theorems for fundamental groups of compact Finsler manifolds are proved. Moreover, the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds with almost-nonnegative Ricci curvature are considered.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds. Some relationships between the growth of fundamental groups and the volume growth of universal covers of Finsler manifolds are found. Some estimates of entropies and the number of generators of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are given. Moreover, the quasi-isometry and the geometric norm in Finsler geometry are considered.

Abstract:We prove that for a compact Finsler manifold M with nonnegative weighted Ricci curvature,if its first closed(resp.Neumann)eigenvalue of Finsler-Laplacian attains the sharp lower bound,then M is isometric to a circle(resp.a segment).Moreover,a lower bound of the first eigenvalue of Finsler-Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary condition is also estimated.These generalize the corresponding results in recent literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the sharp constants of quantitative Hardy and Rellich inequalities on nonreversible Finsler manifolds equipped with arbitrary measures. In particular, these inequalities can be globally refined by adding remainder terms like the Brezis–Vázquez improvement, if Finsler manifolds are of strictly negative flag curvature, vanishing S-curvature and finite uniformity constant. Furthermore, these results remain valid when Finsler metrics are reversible.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider general metric spaces and length spaces whose metrics may be nonreversible, and give Gromov pre-compactness theorems for such spaces with finite reversibility with respect to a generalized Gromov–Hausdorff distance. Abstract:In this paper, we give a Gauss–Bonnet–Chern formula for real Finsler vector bundles with respect to any metric-compatible connection. The key idea is to modify any given metric-compatible connection to be a new metric-compatible connection with some special properties. As a corollary, a Gauss–Bonnet–Chern formula for Finsler manifolds with respect to any metric-compatible connection is established.

Abstract:By using the volume form induced from the projective sphere bundle of the Fiusler manifold,the Finsler geometry of submanifolds is studied.The first variation formula of the volume functional for Fiusler submanifolds is derived.The second fundamental form and the mean curvature form for Finsler submanifolds are defined,which coincide with the usual notions for the Riemannian case.By deriving the divergence formula on the fiber of the projective sphere bundle,a simple equivalence expression of the mean curvature form is given.Some interesting results for Finsler submanifolds in the Minkowski space are established.

Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:The conformai properties of complex Finsler metrics are studied. We first give a characterization of a compact complex Finsler manifold to be globally conformai Kahler. By considering the total holomorphic curvature and total Ricci curvature in the volume preserved conformal classes, we then study the variational properties of Kahler Finsler metrics. By studying the spectral properties of two average metrics, the stabilities of critical Kähler Finsler metrics are verified. Finally, a Yamabe type problem for mean holomorphic Ricci curvature is considered, and a partial existence result is obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we study mean Berwald curvature of the class of homogeneous Finsler manifolds and prove three rigidity theorems. First, we prove that a homogeneous Finsler surface with isotropic mean Berwald curvature and relatively isotropic mean Landsberg curvature must be Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. Then, we show that every homogeneous weakly Berwald surface is Riemannian or locally Mikowskian. This yields an extension of the celebrated Szabó's rigidity theorem for Berwald surfaces. Also, we conclude that every homogeneous Einstein Finsler surface must be Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. It generalizes a result of Deng–Yan that was proved for -metrics. Finally, we study homogeneous weakly Berwald metrics of dimension with scalar flag curvature. It turns out that homogeneous reversible weakly Berwald metrics of scalar flag curvature must be Riemannian or locally Minkowskian.

Abstract:Berwald metrics are particular Finsler metrics which still have linear Berwald connections. Their complete classification is established in an earlier work, [Sz1], of this author. The main tools in these classification are the Simons-Berger holonomy theorem and the Weyl-group theory. It turnes out that any Berwald metric is a perturbed-Cartesian product of Riemannian, Minkowski, and such non-Riemannian metrics which can be constructed on irreducible symmetric manifolds of $rank > 1$. The existence of these metrics are well established by the above theories. The present paper has several new features. First, the Finsler functions of Berwald manifolds are explicitly described by the Chevalley polynomials. New results are also the complete lists of reversible (d(x,y)=d(y,x)) resp. irreversible ($d(x,y)\not =d(y,x)$) Berwald metrics. The Cartan symmetric Finsler manifolds are also completely determined. The paper is concluded by proving that a Berwald metric is uniquely determined by the Minkowski metric induced on an arbitrarily fixed maximal totalgeodesic flat submanifold (Cartan flat). Moreover, any two Cartan flats are isometric.

The Schwarzian derivative on Finsler manifolds of constant curvature

Abstract:Lagrange introduced the notion of Schwarzian derivative and Thurston discovered its mysterious properties playing a role similar to that of curvature on Riemannian manifolds. Here we continue our studies on the development of the Schwarzian derivative on Finsler manifolds. First, we obtain an integrability condition for the Möbius equations. Then we obtain a rigidity result as follows; Let $(M, F)$ be a connected complete Finsler manifold of positive constant Ricci curvature. If it admits non-trivial Möbius mapping, then $M$ is homeomorphic to the $n$-sphere. Finally, we reconfirm Thurston's hypothesis for complete Finsler manifolds and show that the Schwarzian derivative of a projective parameter plays the same role as the Ricci curvature on theses manifolds and could characterize a Bonnet-Mayer-type theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the conormal bundle over a submanifold in a Finsler manifold and establish a volume comparison theorem. As an application, we derive a lower estimate for length of closed geodesics in a Finsler manifold. In the reversible case, a lower bound of injective radius is also obtained.

Abstract:After summarizing some necessary preliminaries and tools, including Berwald derivative and Lie derivative in pull-back formalism, we present ten equivalent conditions, each of which characterizes Berwald manifolds among Finsler manifolds. These range from Berwald's classical definition to the existence of a torsion-free covariant derivative on the base manifold compatible with the Finsler function and Aikou's characterization of Berwald manifolds. Finally, we study some implications of V. Matveev's observation according to which quadratic convexity may be omitted from the definition of a Berwald manifold. These include, among others, a generalization of Z. I. Szabó's well-known metrization theorem, and leads also to a natural generalization of Berwald manifolds, to Berwald--Matveev manifolds.
