Abstract:In this paper, we study the geometry of sub-Finslerian manifolds which are in general irreversible. After clarifying the fundamental concepts about sub-Finslerian geometry, we prove the following results: (1) The metric space of a sub-Finslerian manifold is intrinsic and the (forward and backward) topology of the metric space is equivalent to the underlying topology of the manifold. (2) Any two points which are sufficiently close can be joined by a minimizing geodesic. Moreover, if the metric space is boundedly compact, then any two points can be joined by a minimizing geodesic. (3) Every strongly normal minimizing geodesic parameterized by constant speed is smooth and is characterized as the projection of a solution of a Hamiltonian system on the cotangent bundle. (4) The group of U -isometries is a Lie transformation group of a sub-Finslerian manifold. We also give a description of homogeneous sub-Finslerian manifolds as well as sub-Finslerian symmetric spaces. These results set up a framework of irreversible sub-Finslerian geometry.
