Abstract:We report on CO gas sensing properties of sputtered pristine ZnO and Pd functionalized ZnO (Pd-ZnO) thin films. The structure, morphology, defects, and oxidation states were investigated using XRD , FESEM, PL , and XPS measurements. CO gas sensing performance was measured at different operating temperatures (30–450 °C). The optimum operating temperature (T opt ) for the ZnO sample was 400 °C with sensor response, SR ∼98.4 %, and response/recovery times of ∼8 s/23 s. While the Pd-ZnO sample demonstrates maximum SR ∼98.9 % with ultrafast response time of ∼6 s, at 250 °C i.e., a remarkable reduction in T opt (from 400 °C to 250 °C) was achieved. Moreover, it exhibited high selectivity and long-term stability (300 days) for CO gas along with a detection limit of 230 ppb. Thus, Pd can serve as a suitable functionalizer for ZnO thin films to reduce the T opt and can be used to fabricate low power consuming CO gas sensors.
