Abstract:In this work, four novel tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA)-functionalized nano-sized magnetic polymers (TEPA-NMPs) adsorbents have been applied for the removal of Cu(II) from wastewater. Batch adsorption studies were carried out to evaluate the effects of pH value, initial concentration, adsorption isotherm, and adsorption kinetics etc. The adsorption of Cu(II) reached equilibrium rapidly within 90 mins. The adsorption efficiency of the TEPA-NMPs on Cu(II) was dependent on pH value, the initial Cu(II) concentration and the amount of the crosslink agent, i.e., divinylbenzen (DVB) used for the prepreation of the adsorbents. The adsorption efficiency of Cu(II) decreased with the increasing of the initial Cu(II) concentration and pH value. The adsorption data were well fitted with the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir isotherm was 116.28 mg·g-1 at temperature of 308 K and pH of 4.0. Thermodynamic parameters like ΔHθ, ΔSθ and ΔGθ for the adsorption of Cu(II) onto the TEPA-NMPs have been estimated, which suggested that the adsorption processes of Cu(II) onto the TEPA-NMPs were endothermic and entropy favored in nature, with ΔH at 15.42 kJ·mol-1, △S at 62.54 J·mol-1·K-1. © 2011 IEEE.
High Efficient Removal of Cu(II) by a Chelating Resin from Strong Acidic Solutions: Complex Formation and DFT Certification

Abstract:The novel chelating resin Dowex M-4195 was selected and applied to investigate the static adsorption properties and interaction nature toward aqueous Cu(II) from acid solutions. The isotherm data could be well described by Langmuir model, and the kinetic curves could be successfully fitted with the pseudo-second-order equation. In strong acid solutions at the pH-value of 2, the obtained adsorption capacity was 1.592mmol/g, about 50% more than that at the higher pH-value of 5. The adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) onto Dowex M-4195, especially at the pH-value of 2, were further explored using the Density-Functional-Theory. The theoretical calculations confirmed the three nitrogen atoms would be all involved in the coordination with tridentate complex and thus the two five-member ring structure could be achieved. Additionally, the XPS spectra testified the involvement of nitrogen atoms, which told the coordination ratio might be 1:1. Whereas, in weak acidic solutions at the pH value of 5, the ion exchange mechanism involving the protonated pyridine of solid matrix and Cu(II) was dominant. Consequently, high efficient removal of Cu(II) especially from strong acidic solutions could be achieved, an indication of a potential and preponderant new method to recover heavy metals from acidic effluents without sufficient neutralization pretreatment.
Adsorption Performances and Mechanisms of the Newly Synthesized N,N '-Di (carboxymethyl) Dithiocarbamate Chelating Resin Toward Divalent Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Media

Abstract:N,N′-di (carboxymethyl) dithiocarbamate chelating resin (PSDC) was synthesized by anchoring the chelating agent of N,N′-di (carboxymethyl) dithiocarbamate to the chloromethylated PS-DVB (Cl-PS-DVB) matrix, as a new adsorbent for removing divalent heavy metal ions from waste-stream. The physicochemical structures of Cl-PS-DVB and PSDC were elaborately characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis (EA), and were further morphologically characterized using BET and BJH methods. The adsorption performances of PSDC towards heavy metals such as Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) were systematically investigated, based upon which the adsorption mechanisms were deeply exploited. For the above target, the classic batch adsorption experiments were conducted to explore the kinetics and isotherms of the removal processes with pH-value, initial concentration, temperature, and contact time as the controlling parameters. The kinetic and isotherm data could be well elucidated with Lagergren-second-order equation and Langmuir model respectively. The strong affinity of PSDC toward these target soft acids could be well demonstrated with the electrostatic attraction and chelating interaction caused by IDA moiety and sulphur which were namely soft bases on the concept of hard and soft acids and bases (HASB). Thermodynamic parameters, involving ΔHo, ΔSo and ΔGo were also calculated from graphical interpretation of the experimental data. The standard heats of adsorption (ΔHo) were found to be endothermic and the entropy change values (ΔSo) were calculated to be positive for the adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) ions onto the tested adsorbents. Negative values of ΔGo indicated that adsorption processes for all tested metal ions onto PSDC were spontaneous.

Abstract:The novel polyamine resin DA was synthesized by modification of chloromethyl polystyrene resin with the chelating agent of diethylenetriamine.The adsorption performances of DA towards Cu(Ⅱ) in aqueous were investigated.The kinetic data could be fitted with Pseudo-second-order equation;furthermore,the whole adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic impelled by entropy.The isotherm data could be described by both Langmuir and Freundlich models while the former was better.The novel polyamine resin showed better adsorption capacity than the commercial resin S984 towards Cu(Ⅱ) with maximum capacity of 1.360mmol/g at the pH value of 5,which implied the potential practical applications of the novel adsorbent.

Abstract:In this study, dendritic polyamine chitosan beads with and without 2-aminomethyl pyridine were facilely prepared and characterized. Compared to CN (without the pyridine function), more adsorption active sites, larger pores, higher nitrogen content, higher specific surface area, and higher strength could be obtained for CNP (with the pyridine function). CNP microspheres afforded a larger adsorption capacity than those obtained by CN for different pH values; further, the uptake amounts of Cu(ii) were 0.84 and 1.12 mmol g-1 for CN and CNP beads, respectively, at pH 5. The CNP microspheres could scavenge Cu(ii) from highly acidic and salty solutions: the maximum simulated uptake amount of 1.93 mmol g-1 at pH 5 could be achieved. Due to the strong bonding ability and weakly basic property of pyridine groups, the adsorption capacity of Cu(ii) at pH 1 was 0.75 mmol g-1 in highly salty solutions, which was comparative to those obtained from the commercial pyridine chelating resin M4195 (Q Cu(II) = 0.78 mmol g-1 at pH 1). In addition, a distinct salt-promotion effect could be observed for CNP beads at both pH 5 and 1. Therefore, the prepared adsorbent CNP beads can have promising potential applications in the selective capturing of heavy metals in complex solutions with higher concentrations of H+ and inorganic salts, such as wastewaters from electroplating liquid and battery industries.

Abstract:A novel chelating resin containing many amino and carboxyl functional groups, PS-EDTA resin, was prepared from chloromethylated polystyrene bead by reacting with ethylenediamine and chloroacetate in aqueous phase in sequence. The structure of PS-EDTA resin was characterized by means of infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, surface area analysis and thermogravimetry. Adsorption behavior of the resin for Ag (I) ions in aqueous solutions was investigated by batch experiments. The results indicated that the adsorption removal of PS-EDTA resin for Ag (I) could achieve more than 99.9% at pH values of 5.0 with an initial Ag (I) concentration of 60.0mg/L within 2h. The maximum removal capacity of PS-EDTA toward Ag (I) was found to be almost 3314.97 mg/g at 25 degrees C. In addition, adsorption kinetic data were described by pseudo-second-order equation and the equilibrium data fitted very well with the Freundlich model. It was found that the PS-EDTA resin had excellent adsorption properties for Ag (I), so it should be a promising composite adsorbent with application in the recovery of Ag (I) ions from aqueous environment.

Abstract:The adsorption performances, under static as well as dynamic conditions, for such metal ions as Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) toward chelating resins (IRC748 and NDC702) similarly containing iminodiacetic acid group but diverse pore structures, are systematically performed and deeply exploited. The physicochemical characteristics of both IDA-chelating resins are thoroughly explored by EA, FT-IR, SEM-EDX and PSD. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order equation could satisfactorily describe the batch experimental data, based on which the equilibrium and kinetic parameters are calculated and compared. The adsorption capacities follow the order of Cu(II)>Pb(II)>Cd(II), due to the complicated impacts of metal ion electronegativity as well as resin pore textures. In the contrast of single and binary adsorption performances, more reduction of Cd(II) than Cu(II) is expectably investigated with the coexistence of competitive ion since the less affinity and hence weak competition of the former onto solid-phase. Using aqueous solution of 15wt% HCl, nearly 100% recovery of Cu(II) and Cd(II) from IDA-resins could be strictly achieved in the column-tests. Furthermore, a schematic illustration of possible pore structure has been proposed and simulated. Meanwhile, the interaction mechanisms are thereby deduced and evidently confirmed by FT-IR as well as SEM analysis.

Abstract:The increasing heavy metal pollution caused by industrial wastewater has posed serious environmental concerns, and the removal of heavy metals such as silver becomes an urgent issue to be solved currently. In this research, novel functionalized chitosan beads were prepared by grafting of triethylenetetramine onto chitosan beads. Compared to unmodified chitosan, the triethylenetetramine-modified chitosan (CS-TA) exhibited both higher adsorption capacity and better selectivity for Ag(I) adsorption due to the introduction of amino/amine groups which has a high affinity for Ag(I). The influences of pH, sorbent dose, contact time Ag(I) concentration, and co-existed ions on Ag(I) adsorption were investigated. The adsorption kinetics could be fitted by pseudo-second-order model, whereas the adsorption isotherms could be described by the Langmuir model, indicating that chemisorption is the main mechanism for Ag(I) adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 419.8 mg/g at pH 5.0 and 298 K. The thermodynamic parameters suggest that the Ag(I) adsorption is endothermic and spontaneous. This work demonstrated that CS-TA exhibited superior performance for Ag(I) removal from aqueous solution due to its good hydrophilicity, high adsorption capacity, and fast kinetic rate, thus it could be potentially applied in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Adsorption is recognized as one of the most promising methods for heavy metal removal from contaminated water. However, the adsorption efficiency often decreases because of easy aggregation and an inevitable certain loss of adsorbents during the adsorption process. Herein, a highly efficient chitosan (CS) assisted ethylenediaminetetraacetate-intercalated Mg-Al hydrotalcite-like compound (EDTA-HTlc) composite absorbent (CS-EDTA-HTlc) was synthesized by using a simple ion-exchange/chemical crosslinking process to remove Cu(II), used as a template heavy metal, from an aqueous solution. Characterization by FESEM, PXRD, FTIR, TG-DTG, BET specific surface area, and pore volume revealed that CS-EDTA-HTlc had a high specific surface area and many different functional groups (such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amino) with strong complexing ability. The adsorption capacity of CS-EDTA-HTlc for Cu(II) was investigated by varying experimental conditions such as adsorbent dosage, initial solution pH, adsorption time, initial Cu(II) concentration, and temperature. The adsorption equilibrium was reached within 120 min. The Cu(II) removal efficiency came 98% with the initial Cu(II) concentration of 200 mg·L-1 and the adsorbent dosage of 1.0 g·L-1. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms data of Cu(II) on CS-EDTA-HTlc were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and the Freundlich model, respectively. The adsorption was a spontaneous exothermic process, and the possible adsorption mechanisms analyzed by the XPS and PXRD spectra involved the complexation of Cu(II) ions by carboxyl/hydroxyl/amino groups and the isomorphic substitution of Mg(II) in brucite-like layers. The results suggest that CS-EDTA-HTlc has potential applications in natural Cu(II) contaminated wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A new type of poly-chloromethyl styrene chelating resin (CPS-TA) containing tri-dipyridine aniline side group was synthesized from poly-chloromethyl styrene (CPS) and 4'-(4-aminophenyl)-2,2':6',2-tri-pyridine. The results of batch adsorption experiments show CPS-TA chelating resin has excellent adsorption capacity for Cu (II), Ni (II), and Pb (II), and the maximum adsorption capacity is 5.02, 3.38, and 1.27 mmol/g, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the CPS-TA chelating resin adsorption for ions is a spontaneous process. CPS-TA chelating resin has good repeated use performance, and the CPS-TA-Cu formed after adsorption has excellent catalytic performance for H2O2 degradation of bisphenol A. The paper simulates the adsorption process through column experiments, indicating CPS-TA chelating resin could be used to adsorb and enrich heavy metal ions in wastewater, which provides a new way to effectively solve the problem of treating wastewater that contains heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Poly-chloromethyl styrene (CPS) was used as a carrier to synthesize a poly-chloromethyl styrene chelating resin (CPS-DI) containing heterofluorenone side groups with 4, 5-diazafluoren-9-one. The adsorption performance of the chelating resin on Cu (II), Ni (II), and Pb (II) was studied by batch experiments. Results show that CPS-DI chelating resin has a high affinity for Cu (II), Pb (II), and Ni (II) ions. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cu (II), Pb (II), and Ni (II) are 2.55, 1.34 and 0.94 mmol/g resin, respectively. The parameters on thermodynamic give the adsorption process spontaneous, and a higher temperature is beneficial to the adsorption process. CPS-DI chelating resin has excellent reusability. The column experiment simulates the adsorption process of CPS-DI chelating resin to metal ions, indicating that CPS-DI chelating resin can treat and recover heavy metal ions such as Cu (II), Pb (II), and Ni (II), effectively solve the problem of advanced treatment of wastewater containing heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Batch adsorption experiments were conducted using environment-friendly prepared chelating ethylenediaminetetraacetic sodium modified polystyrene-based (PS-EDTA) resins as an adsorbent to adsorb Cd2+ from aqueous system in which experimental parameters were studied including solution pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial metal concentration and temperature. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (DR) isotherm models were employed to analyze the experimental data among which Freundlich isotherm model was found to be suitable for Cd2+ adsorption. In addition, Cd2+ adsorption on PS-EDTA resins fitted well to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Intraparticle diffusion studies revealed that surface adsorption and intraparticle diffusion were both involved in the adsorption of Cd2+ ions. Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy (Delta G degrees), enthalpy change (Delta H degrees), and entropy change (Delta S degrees) were calculated and indicated that adsorption of Cd2+ ions onto PS-EDTA resins was a spontaneous and endothermic process. The effects of various salts and coexisting heavy metal ions on Cd2+ ions adsorption were also investigated. Moreover, the results from the sequential adsorption-desorption cycles showed that PS-EDTA resins held good reusability and this could be a potential application in the fixed-bed continuous-flow column for the removal of heavy metals. Abstract:A new adsorbent derived from the naturally occurring biopolymers, chitosan (CS) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was prepared by cross-linking them using EDTA. EDTA having high affinity for metal ions can be used to enhance the chelation properties of the adsorbent enormously. The product obtained (chitosan-EDTA-CMC, CSECM) was characterized by different techniques: FTIR, XRD, SEM/EDAX, TGA, and XPS. The parameters for evaluation of the adsorption properties for removal of Cu(II) ions from the aqueous solution were determined using the batch adsorption method by studying the effect of pH, contact time, initial ion concentration, and temperature on adsorption. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models were applied to study the kinetics of the adsorption process, whereas Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and D-R models were applied to evaluate the thermodynamics of the adsorption process. The kinetic adsorption parameters were in best agreement with the pseudo-second-order model, while thermodynamic parameters best fitted to the Langmuir isotherm at different temperatures for adsorption of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution with a maximum adsorption capacity of 142.95 mg/g at pH 5.5. CSECM showed excellent regeneration capability and recovery of the Cu(II) ion up to five cycles without the loss of the adsorption efficiency, which is the best characteristic to select the appropriate choice of the adsorbent. The adsorbent was also employed in batch experiments to evaluate the adsorption of hardness, producing common metal ions in single and real wastewater solutions.

Abstract:In lab tests,201×7 strongly basic anion exchange resin is selected for cyanide adsorption.The results show that the capacity of static saturation adsorption for cyanide is 25.39mg/mL wet resin,and the dynamic saturation is 27.43mg/mL wet resin.At the same time,a neutral strippant NaCl is selected and good stripping effects were achieved.Furthermore,the influence of flow rate and concentration of cyanide on adsorption and elution is examined.The paper primarily discusses the adsorptive mechanics of 201×7 resin for cyanide.It shows that hydrogen bond and physical adsorption forms.So 201×7 strongly basic anion exchange resin has good foreground for cyanide disposal and recovery from the cyanide containing wastewater.

Abstract:A novel chelating resin containing cyanoguanidine moiety has been successfully prepared by the functionalizing reaction of a macroporous bead based on chloromethylated copolymer of styrene-divinylbenzene (CMPS) with dicyandiamide (DCDA) in the presence of phase transfer catalyst. The Fourier transform-infrared spectra (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed in the characterization of the resulting chelating resin, meanwhile, the adsorption properties of the resin for Hg(II) were investigated by batch and column methods. The results indicated that the resin displayed a marked advantage in Hg(II) binding capacity, and the saturated adsorption capacity estimated from the Langmuir model was dramatically up to 1077mgg−1 at 45°C. Furthermore, it was found that the resin was able to selectively separate Hg(II) from multicomponent solutions with Zn(II), Cu(II), Pb(II) and Mg(II). The desorption process of Hg(II) was tested with different eluents and the ratio of the highest recovery reached to 96% under eluting condition of 1M HCl+10% thiourea. Consequently, the resulting chelating resin would provide a potential application for treatment process of Hg(II) containing wastewater.

Due to the high residual load of metal cyanide complexes and ammonium salts, this method does not apply to effluents containing moderate or low cyanide concentrations. To overcome these limitations, in this study, we introduce poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) into a solution containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide Sinpharm (CTAB), to form polymer-surfactant aggregates (PSAs) and enhance the removal efficiency of Cu and T CN . 93.8% and 97.0% of Cu and T CN , respectively, were removed from the synthetic solution (Cu 0.5 mM and CN 1.5 mM) under optimum dosage of 150 ppm PSS and 0.8 mM CTAB, resulting in 92.2% of substrate usage. The addition of 3.0 mM CTAB without PSS resulted in only 46.3% of substrate usage, even though the removals of Cu and T CN were 92.2 and 93.6%, respectively. The presence of thiocyanate ions significantly reduced the removal efficiency due to the competitive interaction with PSAs, whereas the pH of the solution and the temperature did not have any noticeable impact. Tests performed with an industrial effluent corroborated the results obtained with synthetic solutions: PSAs react with copper cyanide to form a precipitate that can be separated from the solution.

Removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution using synthetic poly(catechol-diethylenetriamine-p-phenylenediamine) particles

Abstract:A novel poly(catechol-diethylenetriamine-pphenylenediamine)(PCEA) adsorbent was synthesized in methanol, with chelating groups supplied by catechol and diethylenetriamine, which showed a strong removal performance and efficient adsorption toward Cu(II) ions in aqueous solution. The adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Besides, factors such as adsorbent dosage, pH, initial ionic and metal concentrations, contact time, and temperature on the adsorption of Cu(II) were studied. The data revealed that the adsorption followed a pseudo-second order kinetic model and the adsorption rate was influenced by the intra-particle diffusion. Furthermore, the adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) was 44.2mg/g at 298K in simulated wastewater. The value of ΔG (kJ/mol) and ΔH (kJ/mol) also demonstrated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Studies revealed that PCEA particles were powerful and stable for the removal of Cu(II) in water, and it could be directly applied to the Cu(II)-contaminated water.

Abstract:A novel CPS-AA chelating resin containing bis Schiff base was prepared by the CPS with synthetic small molecular ligands. It has been used for the adsorption of heavy metal ions in wastewater. Ft-IR spectroscopy and the 1H NMR spectrum proved the successful synthesis of Schiff base structure on the chelating resin. The results of adsorption experiments showed the maximum adsorption capacities for Cu (II), Pb (II) and Ni (II) were 3.74, 1.02, and 2.87 mmol/g respectively. The adsorption condition experiment proves that the material has excellent adsorption selectivity and reusability. The possible chelation mechanism was inferred to be four-tooth coordination, which is beneficial to the stretching of molecular chain and increases the adsorption capacity and stability of heavy metal ions. Finally, Cu-adsorbed composites (CPS-AA-Cu) were used as catalysts to explore the reduction and removal of 4-NP in an aqueous solution, and the results showed excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:Cu/Ni-bearing wastewater contamination has recently been a challenge for the environmental protection worldwide. Herein, a novel poly(2-acrylamide-pentanedihydroxamic acid) (PAPDA) resin containing –CONHOH and –COOH groups was prepared and applied to effectively remove Cu 2+ and Ni 2+ from heavy metal wastewater. The batch adsorption experiments revealed that the maximum adsorption capacities of PAPDA resin for Cu 2+ and Ni 2+ were 436.08 and 195.05 mg·g −1 , respectively, which were 10.20 and 9.45 times higher than that of polyacrylic resin. Specifically, the adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics of PAPDA were respectively consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption is a single-layer chemisorption process. Besides, the adsorption mechanism was investigated by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, DFT calculations, suggesting that the PAPDA resin possessing abundant active sites could effectively adsorb the heavy metal ions. Noticeably, the –CONHOH groups represented the strong affinity towards Cu 2+ and Ni 2+ by forming stable five-membered rings. In addition, column experiments were conducted to study the practical adsorption process of PAPDA resin to heavy metal ions. Overall, the results proved that the novel PAPDA resin as a green and highly efficient adsorbent has a promising potential for the treatment of heavy metals-containing wastewater.

Abstract:Batch sorption experiments were conducted using a PS-EDTA resin as a sorbent to adsorb Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions from single component system. The results showed that both the Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions sorption capacity and efficiency reach a high level at an initial pH value of 6, the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions were 42.1mg/g and 32.1mg/g at initial concentration of 100mg/L, and the maximum efficiency were 99.8% and 99.6% at 5mg/L, respectively. The equilibrium data for the adsorption of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on PS-EDTA resin were tested with three adsorption isotherm models which were found to be suitable for the two ions’ adsorptions. In addition, the kinetic adsorption fitted well to the pseudo-second-order model and the corresponding rate constants were obtained. Furthermore a higher desorption efficiency of Cu(II) and Pb(II) from the PS-EDTA resin using acid treatment was available. The column capacity for Cu(II) and Pb(II) adsorption for the bed height of 0.15m, hydraulic loading rate of 2.5m3/(hm2) and the feed concentration of 50mg/L and 100mg/L for 50% breakthrough concentration were found to be 49.8mg/g, 87.4mg/g and 48.7mg/g, 91.2mg/g, respectively.
