Abstract:Glass ceramic has been regarded as an alternative to traditional bulk materials such as single crystal and transparent ceramic. The nucleation/growth behavior of glass ceramic via crystallization is an important topic but is seldom studied so far. In the present work, a series of La3+-based oxyfluoride aluminosilicate glasses are designed to understand their nanocrystallization processes upon heating. Impressively, controllable LaF3, α-NaLaF4 and β-NaLaF4 phase-competitive crystallization in glasses is achieved and structural/spectroscopic characterizations confirm the key role of Al/Si ratio to determine the release of Na+ ions from glass network to participate in crystallization and phase transformation. Furthermore, the developed glass ceramics are evidenced to be ideal hosts for lanthanide dopants (such as Eu3+ and Yb3+/Er3+), which can effectively incorporate into the precipitated fluoride crystal lattices by substituting La3+ ions. As a consequence, incoherent LED-excitable upconverting devices are constructed to demonstrate their promising application as emitting media in display.

Abstract:Fluoride glasses are one of the first glass systems studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations due to its highly ionic nature in chemical bonding that enable effective description of interatomic interactions with point charges and pairwise potentials. In this chapter, applications of MD simulations to the study of fluoride glasses and mixed anion oxyhalide glasses are summarized. Various empirical potentials and simulation procedure for fluoride and oxyfluoride glasses are explained. Then the structures of zirconium fluoride (ZrF 4 )-based fluoride glasses from MD simulations are presented. Structural features such as cation coordinations, structural role of cations, and fluorine environments are discussed. Calculations of optical spectra for rare earth-doped fluoride glasses are reported. This is followed by a summary of recent MD simulations of oxyfluoride glasses. Results of several aluminosilicate oxyfluoride glasses are presented. The capability to directly observe nanoscale phase separation of these glasses in MD simulations and their correlation to the crystal nucleation and growth are discussed. Applications of ab initio MD on simulations of halide glasses are also introduced. In summary, MD simulations provide a wealth of structural information of fluoride and oxyfluoride glasses that help to understand features from optical emission spectra to phase separation and possible crystal formation in these glasses.
From Phase Separation to Nanocrystallization in Fluorosilicate Glasses: Structural Design of Highly Luminescent Glass-Ceramics

Abstract:Tremendous enhancement of optical emission efficiency was achieved in fluorosilicate glasses by growing lanthanide doped fluoride nanocrystals embedded in oxide glass matrix. The formation mechanism of the microstructure was elucidated by combining solid-state NMR, scanning TEM, EDX map, and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal that the growth of fluoride nanocrystals in fluorosilicate glass was originated from fluoride phase separation. Atomic level structures of phase separation of fluoride-rich regions in oxyfluoride glasses matrix were observed from both EDX maps and MD simulations, and it was found that, while silicon exclusively coordinated by oxygen and alkali earth ions and lanthanide mainly coordinated by fluorine, aluminum played the role of linking the two fluoride glass and oxide glass regions by bonding to both oxygen and fluoride ions.

Abstract:The fluorescence line narrowing (FLN) and time resolved fluorescence line narrowing (TRFLN) of Sm3+ ions in ZBLAN fluoride glass have been investigated. The fluorescence transitions 4G5/2-H-6(5/2) and 4G5/2-H-6(7/2) were detected as the wavelength of the exciting light was varied. The homogeneous broadened luminescence of 4G5/2-H-6(5/2) by resonant excitation has been recorded at temperatures as low as 100 K; a 2.5 cm-1 linewidth was measured at this temperature, and the delay-time dependence and temperature dependence of the spectral width were studied.

Abstract:The oxyfluoride germanate glass and glass-ceramics were prepared by the melting–annealing method. The composition of the glass was chosen as 45GeO2–30BaF2–5B2O3–15AL2O3–5R2O–xSm2O3 (R=Li, Na, and K. x=1.5, 2.0, and 2.5, mol%). Differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and photoluminescence spectra were carried out to study the effects of the concentration of Sm ions, the kinds of alkali ions and heat treatment on the photoluminescence properties of Sm ion doped oxyfluoride germanate glass. The results showed that the luminescence intensity of the oxyfluoride germanate glass increased when x changed from 1.5 to 2.0 and then decreased when x changed from 2.0 to 2.5. Among various R2O, the Li2O included glass has the strongest luminescence intensity among all the glasses. Heat treatment at 660°C for 4h resulted in the formation of the Ba3AlF9 nanocrystal and enhanced the luminescence intensity of the sample. The mechanism of luminescence intensity increase was discussed.

Abstract:Fluoride phase separation is the initial stage of nanocrystallization in oxyfluoride glasses, and it is a key step in achieving transparent glass-ceramics with good luminescence. In this work, we combine molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and experimental studies to investigate the phase separation, nanocrystallization and photoluminescence in fluoroaluminosilicate glass and glass-ceramics containing alkali earth fluoride (MF2). The results reveal different phase separation behaviors due to the field strength difference of M2+. The composition and size similarity between the fluoride-rich regions in the MD simulated glass and the fluoride nanocrystals in the experimental prepared glass-ceramics are observed, suggesting that the separated fluoride phase is the structural origin of the observed MF(2)nanocrystals. Besides, in order to understand the M(2+)dependent glass structural features, the crystallization temperatures, the luminescent properties of Eu(3+)and Eu(2+)doped glass-ceramics, and the lasing performance of Er(3+)doped glass-ceramics are discussed. Based on these comprehensions, some strategies are proposed to help to efficiently design oxyfluoride glass with desired luminescence performance.

Abstract:Fluoride materials provide some distinct advantages owing to their very low phonon frequencies, which makes them as good hosts for downconversion/upconversion phosphors. Oxides with wide band gap and good chemical stability are also easily prepared, which makes them the prior host matrix for phosphors used in LED, long-lasting phosphor, and plasma display panels (PDPs), in which vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation from noble gas discharge is used as the excitation source. In contrast, because of the strong nephelauxetic effect and large crystal-field splitting caused by the coordination of nitrogen atoms, (oxy)nitrides exhibit broad excitation bands covering the emission of the InGaN near-UV and blue LED chips. Moreover, (oxy)nitrides materials feature high thermal and chemical stability due to the stiff frameworks of (Si, Al)-(N, O) tetrahedral in the host lattice. These features lead (oxy)nitrides to be excellent hosts for phosphors, especially those used in LED. In this section, we briefly summarize the crystal structures of somefluorides, (oxy)nitrides, and oxides and present their optical properties as well as give examples for their applications.

Abstract:Some luminescence of Er3+ ions in the fluoride glasses are studied. One of the cross-relaxations of Er3+ ions is between 11/2H2-9/2I4 and 15/2I4-13/2I4. The Er3+-Er3+ ions interaction causing the cross-relaxation in the fluoride glasses is an electric dipole-dipole interaction.

Abstract:Europium-doped LaF3 nanoparticles have been prepared by the ionic reaction in the ethanol at 60°C. From the XRD pattern of nanoparticles and the emission spectra of Eu3+ ions, it has been concluded that the Eu3+ ions could easily substitute the La3+ sites and the solid solution La1−xEuxF3 can be synthesized. Due to very low phonon energies of LaF3 matrix, the 5D1 emission of Eu3+ ions in La1−xEuxF3 nanoparticles can be observed at room temperature when doping concentration of Eu3+ ions is lower than 30mol%. The quenching process of 5D1 emission can be attributed to cross-relaxation. Since clusters of Eu3+ ions and resonance energy transfer only occurs within one particle due to the hindrance by the particle boundary, the concentration quenching resulted from resonance energy transfer between neighboring Eu3+ ions occurs at higher Eu3+ concentrations in the Eu3+ doped LaF3 nanoparticles.

Abstract:The luminescence properties of europium and dysprosium ions co-doped zinc–aluminoborosilicate glasses were analyzed. A combination of blue, green, yellow and red emission bands was shown for these glasses, and white light emission could be observed under UV light excitation. The color of luminescence could be adjusted by varying the proportions of europium and dysprosium. The concentration quenching effect was also investigated in this paper. Furthermore, the reduction of Eu3+→Eu2+ in air at high temperature was observed in the zinc–aluminoborosilicate glasses.

Abstract:We report data on the luminescence spectra associated with photochromic centers in X-ray irradiated calcium fluoride crystals doped with Lu ions. Irradiation in low energy photochromic centers absorption band excites emission, which can be identify with transitions into photochromic centers. Ab initio calculation of absorption spectrum of photochromic center agrees rather well with experimental data.

Abstract:The AlF3-MF2-LnF3 (M = Ca; Sr; Ba; Ln = Yb/Tm) based pure fluoride GCs are essentially ideal candidates for the realization of PL in UV and VIS spectral region. However, the pure fluoride glasses are prone to precipitation of undesired nano-crystals while quenching and post annealing due to their poor chemical stability. Therefore, the development of such glass systems requires strict adherence to composition control right from the outset. This research employed extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and incorporated the results into the experimental design to develop an efficient multicomponent fluoride glass system. Vivid simulation of M-F-Ln and M-F-Al nano-cluster formation via MD are observed in the glass matrix. These nano-clusters serve as the structural origins of the precipitated nano-crystals in GCs post heat treatment. Through meticulous manipulation of the Al/M ratio, it became feasible to theoretically forecast the transformation of the glass matrix from a cubic M1-xLnxF2+x to a hexagonal Ln1-yMyF3-y nano-crystal precipitated GCs, which could conceivably be manufactured experimentally. This transformation offers superior luminescent performance for Ln1-yMyF3-y containing GCs enabling short-wavelength PL realisation in near UV (~361nm with 8-fold enhancement) and VIS (~478nm with 1.7-fold enhancement) from Yb3+/Tm3+ transitions, in comparison to its cubic M1-xLnxF2+x counterpart. Hence, we propose an effective fluoride glass system for short-wavelength upconversion luminescent applications through the integration of MD simulations and experimental research.

Abstract:Er3+ doped transparent oxyfluoride glass ceramics containing LaF3 nanocrystals were prepared and the up-conversion and near infrared luminescence behavior of Er3+ in glasses and glass ceramics were investigated. With increasing heat-treating time and temperature, the size (varied from 0 to 19 nm) and crystallinity (varied from 0 to 47%) of LaF3 nanocrystals in the glass ceramics are increased. The up-conversion luminescence intensity of Er3+ ions in the glass ceramics is much stronger than that in the glasses and increased significantly with increasing heat-treating time and temperature. The near infrared emission of Er3+ ions in the glass ceramics is found to be similar to that in the glasses.

Abstract:The Eu2+‐doped glasses and glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their luminescence properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals in glass ceramics was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The melting in a reducing atmosphere and then the crystallization of glass resulted in the reduction of almost all Eu3+ ions to Eu2+ ions in the glass ceramics. The Eu2+‐doped glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals exhibited a much stronger broad blue emission band and a longer lifetime of excited state than the glasses.
Up-conversion luminescence and near infrared luminescence of Er3+ in transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramics

Abstract:The up-conversion luminescence and near infrared luminescence of the Er3+ in transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramics have been investigated. The formation of PbF2 nano-crystals in the glass was confirmed by XRD. From optical absorption spectra, the oscillator strengths for several transitions of the Er3+ in the glass and glass-ceramic have been obtained and then the Judd–Ofelt parameters were calculated by a least squares fitting. The split near infrared emission peaks of the Er3+ ions in the glass-ceramics can be observed because the Er3+ ions have entered into crystalline environment of the β-PbF2 nano-crystals. The up-conversion luminescence intensity of the Er3+ in the glass-ceramics can be observed to be much stronger than that in the glasses. The dependence of the up-conversion luminescence intensity on the current of the LD laser used as excited source indicated that the transition mechanism of the up-conversion luminescence can be ascribed to two-photon absorption process.

Abstract:Fluoroaluminosilicate glass-ceramics with M1 - x RxF2 + x (M2+: Sr2+, Ba2+, R3+: rare earth ions) crystals are novel host materials for luminescence applications. However, the preparation of such materials is still a trial-error based approach due to the lack of detailed glass structure understanding. In this work, the authors study the phase separation and potential nanocrystal formation in a series of Ba2+ and La3+ containing fluoroaluminosilicate glasses by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Fluoride phase separation is observed from all simulated glass samples. With gradual LaF3 to BaF2 substitution, the cations enrichment changes from Ba2+, to Ba2+ and La3+, and finally La3+ in the fluoride-rich regions. Besides, the competition between Al3+ and La3+ in fluoride phase and the consequently redistribution of Al3+ and Na+ into oxide phase are observed, which can change the local environment of luminescent centers, affecting luminescence. An experimental support to this phenomenon is given. Therefore, MD simulation with effective potentials can be a practical method to study the structural origins of nanocrystal from fluoride phase separation as well as to study the structure-property relationship in fluoroaluminosilicate glass. The simulation driven glass structure and crystal phase exploration can thus become an effective method in designing glass-ceramics for luminescence and other applications.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) was embedded in barium and fluorine silicate glass matrices, and luminescence properties of as‐prepared glass samples were studied. For the fluorine‐free glasses, a blue emission was observed. With partial substitution of BaF2 for BaO in glass compositions, emission spectra of glasses show an obvious blue shift to the near‐UV region. For the BaO‐free glasses, the dominant UV emission shifts to the near‐band‐edge exciton emission position of ZnO and also shows a red shift with increasing BaF2. At the same time, a visible emission shoulder appears in the blue to green region and becomes weak with introduction of increasing BaF2.
