Abstract:Some luminescence of Er3+ ions in the fluoride glasses are studied. One of the cross-relaxations of Er3+ ions is between 11/2H2-9/2I4 and 15/2I4-13/2I4. The Er3+-Er3+ ions interaction causing the cross-relaxation in the fluoride glasses is an electric dipole-dipole interaction.

Abstract:The absorption spectrum, emission spectrum and excitation spectrum of Er3+ ion in fluoroindate glass were measured. The Judd-Ofelt parameters of this glass were presented. The calculation results of the luminescence properties of Er3+ ion in fluoroindate glass were given and compared with that of Er3+-doped fluorozirconate glass, while the influence of glass hosts on the luminescence of Er3+ ion was described.

Abstract:The upconversion luminescence and near infrared luminescence of the Er3+ ions in transparent oxyfluoride glass–ceramics containing CaF2 nanocrystals have been investigated. The formation of CaF2 nanocrystals in the glass–ceramics was confirmed by XRD. The oscillator strengths for several transitions of the Er3+ ions in the glass and glass–ceramics have been obtained and then the Judd–Ofelt parameters were calculated. The split near infrared emission peaks of the Er3+ ions in the glass–ceramics can be observed because the Er3+ ions have been incorporated into crystalline environment of the CaF2 nanocrystals. The upconversion luminescence intensity of Er3+ ions in the glass–ceramics increased significantly with increasing heat treated time. The transition mechanism of the upconversion luminescence has been ascribed to a two-photon absorption process.

Abstract:Er3+ doped transparent oxyfluoride glass ceramics containing LaF3 nanocrystals were prepared and the up-conversion and near infrared luminescence behavior of Er3+ in glasses and glass ceramics were investigated. With increasing heat-treating time and temperature, the size (varied from 0 to 19 nm) and crystallinity (varied from 0 to 47%) of LaF3 nanocrystals in the glass ceramics are increased. The up-conversion luminescence intensity of Er3+ ions in the glass ceramics is much stronger than that in the glasses and increased significantly with increasing heat-treating time and temperature. The near infrared emission of Er3+ ions in the glass ceramics is found to be similar to that in the glasses.

Abstract:The up-conversion luminescence and near infrared luminescence of the Er3+ in transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramics have been investigated. The formation of PbF2 nano-crystals in the glass was confirmed by XRD. From optical absorption spectra, the oscillator strengths for several transitions of the Er3+ in the glass and glass-ceramic have been obtained and then the Judd–Ofelt parameters were calculated by a least squares fitting. The split near infrared emission peaks of the Er3+ ions in the glass-ceramics can be observed because the Er3+ ions have entered into crystalline environment of the β-PbF2 nano-crystals. The up-conversion luminescence intensity of the Er3+ in the glass-ceramics can be observed to be much stronger than that in the glasses. The dependence of the up-conversion luminescence intensity on the current of the LD laser used as excited source indicated that the transition mechanism of the up-conversion luminescence can be ascribed to two-photon absorption process.

Abstract:Europium-doped LaF3 nanoparticles have been prepared by the ionic reaction in the ethanol at 60°C. From the XRD pattern of nanoparticles and the emission spectra of Eu3+ ions, it has been concluded that the Eu3+ ions could easily substitute the La3+ sites and the solid solution La1−xEuxF3 can be synthesized. Due to very low phonon energies of LaF3 matrix, the 5D1 emission of Eu3+ ions in La1−xEuxF3 nanoparticles can be observed at room temperature when doping concentration of Eu3+ ions is lower than 30mol%. The quenching process of 5D1 emission can be attributed to cross-relaxation. Since clusters of Eu3+ ions and resonance energy transfer only occurs within one particle due to the hindrance by the particle boundary, the concentration quenching resulted from resonance energy transfer between neighboring Eu3+ ions occurs at higher Eu3+ concentrations in the Eu3+ doped LaF3 nanoparticles.

Abstract:The luminescence behaviors of Er3+ doped glass ceramics containing Sr2RF7 (R=Y,Gd,La) nanocrystals were investigated. The formation of Sr2RF7 nanocrystals in the glass ceramics was confirmed by x-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analysis showed that the Er3+ ions were efficiently incorporated in Sr2GdF7 nanocrystals. The efficient upconversion luminescence of the Er3+ in the glass ceramics can be observed. The lifetime of the Er3+ in the glass ceramics was found to be much longer than that in the glass due to the lower phonon energy of fluoride crystals when Er3+ entered efficiently fluoride crystals in the glass ceramics.

Abstract:The Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped and Er3+ single doped oxyfluoride glasses were prepared by high temperature melting method. The optical properties of the samples were studied. According to differential thermal analysis (DTA) curve, the samples were thermal treated at 552°C, and micro-crystalline were formed after thermal treatment. The near infrared luminescence spectra under 980 nm excitation of the samples were recorded at room temperature. The results showed that the near infrared luminescence intensity increased with increasing Yb3+ concentration. This is because Yb3+ ions absorbed pumped energy of 980 nm through 2F7/2 → 2F5/2 transition, and then the energy was transferred to Er3+ ions by the way of resonance energy transfer and enhanced the 4I15/2 → 4I11/2 transition.

Abstract:A group of highly Er 3+ -doped TeO 2 –BaF 2 –LaF 3 –La 2 O 3 fluorotellurite glasses was prepared by high-temperature melting and rapid cooling. The Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory intensity parameters, radiative transition rate, and radiative lifetime of Er 3+ ions were calculated based on the absorption spectra. The luminecence spectra at 2.7 μm and luminescence lifetime curves of Er 3+ ions in fluorotellurite glasses, excited at 980 nm, were studied. The fluorotellurite glass exhibits high infrared transmittance (88 %), excellent thermal stability (ΔT > 105 °C), and low phonon energy (781 cm -1 ). According to Fuchbauer-Ladenburg theory, the absorption and emission cross sections of Er 3+ -doped fluorotellurite glass at 2.7 μm are 5.50×10 −21 and 6.28×10 −21 cm 2 , respectively. These findings suggest that the glass holds significant potential for applications in mid-infrared (MIR) fiber lasers.

Abstract:The Eu2+‐doped glasses and glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their luminescence properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals in glass ceramics was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The melting in a reducing atmosphere and then the crystallization of glass resulted in the reduction of almost all Eu3+ ions to Eu2+ ions in the glass ceramics. The Eu2+‐doped glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals exhibited a much stronger broad blue emission band and a longer lifetime of excited state than the glasses.
Characteristics of Er3+ luminescent decay in oxy-fluoride glass ceramics

Abstract:Oxy-fluoride glass ceramics is a new up-converted luminescent material with strong mechanical strength just like oxide and low phonon energy just like fluoride. Characteristic of Er3+ luminescent decay is studied firstly. It is found that the energy match between rare earth ions is realized easily by the phonon joining at room temperature, which result to cross-relaxation strengthen and the lifetime of 664 nm radiation be longer. Up-converted luminescent intensity will be increased if 4F9/2 energy level is used to middle energy level.

Abstract:The fluorescence properties of oxyfluoride glass ceramics containing nanosized LaF3 crystals with different ErF3 doping level were investigated. The spectroscopy analysis indicated that a dominant fraction of ErF3 had been incorporated into the crystal phase. Broad 1.5μm emission spectra with full width at half maximum (FWHM) value ranging from about 40–100nm were obtained, which increased accordingly with ErF3 doping level. Noteworthily, intense green and red upconversion emissions from samples with high ErF3 doping level were observed when excited even with a 30mW diode laser at 976nm. An overall increment of the upconversion emissions intensity, and, a relative increase in intensity of the red emission with respect to that of the green one were also identified with increasing ErF3 concentration. The possible upconversion mechanisms were proposed.

Abstract:Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+-doped transparent alkaline earth fluorosilicate glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their microstructures and spectroscopic properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals enriched with Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ in the glass ceramics was confirmed by XRD, HRTEM and SAED. The glass ceramics exhibited intense upconversion luminescence behaviors, owing to efficient energy transfers from Yb3+ to Er3+ and Tb3+ and low phonon assistant non-radiative transition probabilities of excited Er3+ and Tb3+. The upconversion could be enhanced significantly by increasing the annealing temperature and the luminescence color could be adjusted by varying the Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ ratio. Upconversion of Er3+ could be described as sequential energy transfer from single Yb3+ to single Er3+, while upconversion of Tb3+ described as cooperative energy transfer from double Yb3+ to single Tb3+.
Study of Eu3+-doped Luminescence Glasses Prepared by a Sol-Gel Process

Abstract:The formation of Eu3+-doped luminescence glasses prepared by sol-gel techniques and the spectroscopic properties of Eu3+ ions in dried gels and gel glasses were investigated. The results showed that most residual water and organic molecules in the dried gel had vaporized in the temperature range from room temperature to 200 °C, and careful heat treatment of the dried gel in a lower temperature range was required to obtain bulk Eu3+-doped luminescence glass. It was also found that the ratio of emission intensities of the 5D0→7F1 transition and 5D0→7F2 transition in dried gels was very different from that in gel glasses. The dependence of concentration on the Eu3+ emission intensity in dried gels and gel glasses was also investigated. In gel glasses, the dependence of concentration on the luminescence in the range 0.5–4 mol% Eu2O3 did not reveal any concentration quenching. Conversely, the optimum concentration of Eu2O3 for maximum luminescence intensity in dried gels was approximately 1 mol%. The phonon-assisted resonant energy transfer theory is expected to explain the concentration quenching of Eu3+ ion luminescence in dried gels.

Abstract:The up-conversion luminescence of 20GaF3-15InF3-17CdF2-15ZnF2-10SnF2-3P2O5-(20-x-y)-PbF2-xErF3-yYbF3(x=0.1~0.4,y=1~4) glasses with different Er3+ and Yb3+ concentration were researched.When excited at 755nm,purple(410nm),blue(465nm) and green(522nm,544nm) emissions were observed.With the concentration increasing of Er3+,the trend of luminescence increase slowed.When excited at 980nm,green(548nm,527nm) and red(661nm) emissions were observed through energy transfer.Fixed Er3+ concentration,with the Yb3+ concentration increased,the fluorescence intensity increased first and then decreased.When the Er3+,Yb3+doping molar concentration ratio was 15,the greatest luminous intensity was obtained.This fluoride-oxy glass has a better anti-crystallization stability than fluoride glass and a bright red and green up-conversion luminescence when excited at different wavelength.It is a promising material for the red and green up-conversion luminescence.

Abstract:We report data on the luminescence spectra associated with photochromic centers in X-ray irradiated calcium fluoride crystals doped with Lu ions. Irradiation in low energy photochromic centers absorption band excites emission, which can be identify with transitions into photochromic centers. Ab initio calculation of absorption spectrum of photochromic center agrees rather well with experimental data.

Abstract:The absorption spectrum, upconversion spectra and Raman spectrum of Er3+-doped heavy metal oxyfluorosilicate glasses have been investigated, and luminescence mechanisms of Er3+ in heavy metal oxyfluorosilicate glasses were analyzed. The results showed that blue, green and red emission centered around 411, 525, 543, and 655 nm, corresponding to the 2H9/2→4I15/2,2H11/2→4I15/2,4S3/2→4I15/2, and4F9/2→4I15/2transitions of Er3+ ions, respectively, were simultaneously observed at room temperature under 975 nm diode laser excitation, and the intensity for blue, green and red emissions increases with increasing Er2O3 concentrations. There are two basic upconversion mechanisms: excited state absorption and energy transfer, and a two-photon upconversion process is assigned to the intense green and red emissions, respectively, while a three-photon process is responsible for weak blue upconversion. Raman spectrum indicates that the lead fluoride in the glass network play an important role in upconvesion fluorescence of Er3+.

Abstract:Transparent 45SiO225Al2O35CaO10NaF15CaF2 glass ceramics doped with different levels of Er3+ were prepared. The spherical CaF2 nanocrystals with 10–20nm in size were verified to be homogeneously embedded among the glassy matrix. Room temperature absorption and emission spectra corresponding to 4I13/2↔4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions in precursor glasses and glass ceramics, respectively had been measured. For glass ceramics, with increasing of Er3+ content from 0.1 to 2.0mol%, the FWHM values of the emission bands increased from 42 to 71nm; meanwhile, the lifetime of 4I13/2 level slightly reduced. However, both the values of FWHM and lifetime were larger than those of precursor glasses due to the change of ligand field of Er3+ ions.
