Abstract:By heat treating the alkaline earth fluorosilicate glass, transparent glass ceramics containing alkaline earth fluoride nanocrystallites were prepared. The luminescence spectra and phonon sideband associated with the Eu3+:5D2 → 7F0 in glass and glass ceramics were investigated to analyze the local environment around Eu3+. Judd-Ofelt parameters were also calculated from emission spectra, which indicated that the Eu3+ ions entered the precipitated CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2 nanocrystallites. Heat treating could not pledge Eu3+ ions to coordinate with F− in the precipitated MgF2 nanocrystallites, owing to the smaller radius of Mg2+ than that of Eu3+.

Abstract:In the present paper, the absorption spectra of Ho3+ (0.5 mol%)-doped oxyfluoride glass (FOG) sample and Ho3+ (0.5 mol%)-doped oxyfluoride vitroceramics (FOV) sample were measured through experiment. The authors calculated the intensity parameters omega 2, 4, 6 of the two materials according to J-O theory, and analyzed the possible reason for the difference between the two materials on the intensity parameters. After that the authors calculated oscillator strength, spontaneous radiative transition rate, branching ratio and integrated emission cross section and some other spectroscopic parameters of several excited states and then made a comparative analysis of the two materials based on these spectroscopic parameters. The authors found that the oscillator strength of trivalent holmium iron in FOV is about the same with the oscillator strength in YAlO3 and is similar to oscillator strength in FOG, while slightly larger than in that LBTAF and much larger than that in LaF3 and ZBLAN. By analyzing the calculated spectroscopic parameters, it can be found that some transitions, especially 5I7 --> 5I8, 5F5 --> 5I8 etc., have a relatively large oscillator strengths(larger than 10(-6)) and large integrated emission cross sections(larger than 10(-18) cm). These transitions have the conditions to form laser passages, so they are worth a lot of attention. At last, application prospects of several strong luminescence transitions were concluded.

Abstract:Some luminescence of Er3+ ions in the fluoride glasses are studied. One of the cross-relaxations of Er3+ ions is between 11/2H2-9/2I4 and 15/2I4-13/2I4. The Er3+-Er3+ ions interaction causing the cross-relaxation in the fluoride glasses is an electric dipole-dipole interaction.

Abstract:Ho3+ doped ZBLAN glass with 2.0 and 2.9 μm emission was prepared. In order to further improve the luminescence of Ho3+, halogen ions (Cl, Br, I) were introduced to reduce the maximum phonon energy and phonon state density of the sample. At the same time, Nd3+ was introduced to transfer the energy to Ho3+ pumped with a 793 nm laser (Nd3+:4F5/2,4F3/2→Ho3+:5I6). The effect of different halogen ion on the luminescent properties of the fluoride halide glass was compared. The results show that the luminescent intensity of infrared increases with the introduction of different halogen ions. By comparison, it is found that the sample with I– has the strongest luminescence of 1064 nm, 2.0 μm and 2.9 μm. This is consistent with the calculated J-O intensity parameters. In addition, the 2.0 and 2.9 μm emission of Ho3+ pumped with a 450 nm laser will not disappear. A mid-infrared sample with multi-wavelength excitation and multi-wavelength emission can be obtained. Nd3+/Ho3+ co-doped fluoride halide glasses with 1064 nm, 2.0 μm and 2.9 μm luminescence were prepared by melt quenching method. The luminescent mechanism and the energy transfer process between the two ions of Nd3+/Ho3+ co-doped fluoride halide glass were studied. The J-O parameters, luminescence lifetime and absorption emission cross-sectional area of Ho3+ and Nd3+ were calculated, respectively. It is found that the value of Ω 2 in the glass matrix increases with the introduction of different halogen ions, while Ω 4 and Ω 6 do not change obviously in different glass compositions. This is because the environment of the crystal field around the rare earth ions changes. The crystal phase and phonon energy of the sample were analyzed by X-ray diffraction pattern and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, respectively. Based on the above spectra and data (phonon energy is 634.71 cm−1), it can be predicted that Nd3+/Ho3+ co-doped fluoride halide glass is a potential mid-infrared luminescent material.

Abstract:In order to study the spectral properties of Ho 3+ :YLiF 4 (Ho 3+ :YLF), we measured the absorption spectra f Ho 3+ :YLF crystal. The experimental and calculated electric dipole line strength are calculated based on Judd-Ofelt theory, so do other spectral parameters. In order to characterize the emission characteristics of energy level, we measured the emission spectra of Ho 3+ :YLF crystal under the pumping of lasers at 450 nm and 640 nm, and the partial emission cross-sections spectra was calculated according to the Fuchtbauer-Ladenburg theory. Moreover, the fluorescence lifetimes of 537 nm, 656 nm, 750 nm, 1195 nm and 1964 nm are measured. As far as we know, the fluorescence lifetime of 1964 nm (∼2 μm) and the emission cross-sections of ∼750 nm and ∼961 nm are confirmed for the first time. This work lays the foundation for the generation of lasing at novel wavelength on Ho 3+ :YLF crystal.

Abstract:Ho3+ ion has attracted attention owing to its rich energy level structures and ability to emit emissions covering from visible to mid-infrared region. However, finding a suitable host of solid luminescence matrix material for its luminescence is a huge challenge at present. In this paper, a new system of oxyhalide glass based on tellurite-germanate and modified with MgCl2 is investigated. It is worth mentioning that through the mixed structural design, the thermal properties of the matrix are further optimized, and the symmetries of the coordination structure near Ho3+ are broken, thus making a great contribution to improving Ho3+ 2–3 μm luminescence, with more than 4-fold increase in fluorescence intensities, and long fluorescence lifetime of 1.24 ms for Ho3+: 5I7 level. The combined experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations confirm that oxyhalide glass is a very advantageous matrix material, which provides more possibilities for the application of Ho3+ in MIR lasers.

Abstract:This paper reports on the absorption, visible and near-infrared luminescence properties of Er3+, Nd3+, Pr3+ and Ho3+-doped alkali fluoride zinc boro germanate glasses. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) profiles of the host glass have been carried out, to confirm its structure and thermal stability. From the measured absorption spectra, Judd-Ofelt (JO) intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4) and Omega(6)) have been calculated for all the studied ions. For Pr3+ and Ho3+-doped glasses, upconversion emission spectra have also been measured. Decay curves were measured for the visible emissions of Er3+, Pr3+ and Ho3+ ions at 547 nm (Er3+: green), 604 nm and 641 nm (Pr3+: orange and red) and 658 nm (Ho3+: red), respectively. The near-infrared emission spectra of Er3+/Yb3+ and Nd3+-doped glasses have shown full width at half maximum (FWHM) around 95 nm (for the I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition) and 63 nm (for the F-4(3/2) -> I-4(11/2) transition), respectively. The measured maximum decay times of I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition (at wavelength 1.51 mu m) are about 5.72 ms and 6.14 ms for 1.0Er(3+) and 1.0Er(3+)/2Yb(3+) (mol%)-codoped glasses, respectively. The maximum stimulated emission cross sections for I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition of Er3+ and Er3+/Yb3+ are 5.447 x 10(-21) cm(2) and 4.540 x 10(-21) cm(2). These glasses with better thermal stability, bright visible emissions and broad near-infrared emissions should have potential applications in broadly tunable laser sources, interesting optical luminescent materials and broadband optical amplification in low-loss telecommunication windows.

Abstract:Spectroscopic properties of Ho3+ : LiLa(MoO4)2 and Tm3+/Ho3+ : LiLa(MoO4)2 single crystals relevant to the 2 µm laser of Ho3+ ions have been investigated. The polarized absorption spectra of the crystals were measured. The stimulated emission cross sections of the 5I7 → 5I8 transition for Ho3+ ions were estimated. The fluorescence spectra around 2 µm and upconversion fluorescence spectra in the visible region under excitation at 795 nm were measured. The fluorescence decay curves of the 3H4 and 3F4 multiplets of Tm3+ ions and the 5I7 multiplet of Ho3+ ions were recorded. The cross relaxation of 3H4 + 3H6 → 3F4 + 3F4 between Tm3+ ions and the following energy transfer between the 3F4 multiplet of Tm3+ ions and the 5I7 multiplet of Ho3+ ions in the Tm3+/Ho3+ : LiLa(MoO4)2 were analysed.

Abstract:The 30 at.% Ho: BaY2F8 crystals were grown by the Czochralski method, and their spectroscopic properties are analyzed systematically by standard Judd-Ofelt theory. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters are estimated to be Omega(2) = 6.74 x 10(-20) cm(2), Omega(4) = 1.20 x 10(-20) cm(2), and Omega(6) = 0.66 x 10(-20) cm(2), and the fluorescence branching ratios and radiative lifetimes for a series of excited state manifolds are also determined. The emission cross sections with our measured infrared luminescence spectra, especially important for 4.1 mu m, are calculated to be about 4.37 x 10(-21) cm(2). The crystal quality is preliminarily tested through a mid-infrared laser emission experiment.

Abstract:Optical absorption spectrum of Pr3+ ions in ZBLAN glass had been measured. The dimensions of the Pr3+-doping glass sample is 5��5��4 mm, and the doped concentration is 1.5 mol%. The fluoride glass consists of ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF. The spectral parameters including oscillator strength, emission transition probability and branching ratios of Pr3+ had been calculated, in terms of Judd-Ofelt theory. Slater parameters, spin-orbit coupling parameters and configuration interaction parameters of Pr3+ in the glass are given by fitting the energy levels.

Abstract:The Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped and Er3+ single doped oxyfluoride glasses were prepared by high temperature melting method. The optical properties of the samples were studied. According to differential thermal analysis (DTA) curve, the samples were thermal treated at 552°C, and micro-crystalline were formed after thermal treatment. The near infrared luminescence spectra under 980 nm excitation of the samples were recorded at room temperature. The results showed that the near infrared luminescence intensity increased with increasing Yb3+ concentration. This is because Yb3+ ions absorbed pumped energy of 980 nm through 2F7/2 → 2F5/2 transition, and then the energy was transferred to Er3+ ions by the way of resonance energy transfer and enhanced the 4I15/2 → 4I11/2 transition.

Abstract:Europium-doped LaF3 nanoparticles have been prepared by the ionic reaction in the ethanol at 60°C. From the XRD pattern of nanoparticles and the emission spectra of Eu3+ ions, it has been concluded that the Eu3+ ions could easily substitute the La3+ sites and the solid solution La1−xEuxF3 can be synthesized. Due to very low phonon energies of LaF3 matrix, the 5D1 emission of Eu3+ ions in La1−xEuxF3 nanoparticles can be observed at room temperature when doping concentration of Eu3+ ions is lower than 30mol%. The quenching process of 5D1 emission can be attributed to cross-relaxation. Since clusters of Eu3+ ions and resonance energy transfer only occurs within one particle due to the hindrance by the particle boundary, the concentration quenching resulted from resonance energy transfer between neighboring Eu3+ ions occurs at higher Eu3+ concentrations in the Eu3+ doped LaF3 nanoparticles.

Abstract:Transition metal (TM) ions have been used as colouring agents in the glass industry for a long time. Recently, great attention has been paid to the TM ion doped glasses for the development of new lasers or luminescence materials. The absorption spectra of TM ions in different kinds of glasses have been studied extensively, but little work has been done for fluorescence and relaxation spectra. In this paper emphasis is laid on analysing the influence of chemical bond characteristics of the base glass on the spectra and the site structure of transition metal ions in glasses. Recent experimental results about the luminescence characteristics of low valence ions (such as Ti3+, Cr3+, V2+, Mn2+, Cu+, Mo3+) in glasses are also reported.

Abstract:Ho3+/Nd3+ co-doped fluoroindate glass samples were prepared by melt-quenching. The absorption and emission spectra, and the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve were measured and used to evaluate the spectroscopic parameters and thermal properties. An intense ~3.9 μm emission, ascribed to the transition Ho3+:5I5 →5I6, was observed under the excitation of an 808 nm laser diode and was ascribed to the efficient energy transfer process from Nd3+: 4F3/2 to Ho3+: 5I5, showing the Nd3+ role as a sensitizer. The optimal concentration ratio of Ho3+ and Nd3+ for ~3.9 μm emission was estimated to be 1:1. The spectroscopic performance suggests that the Ho3+/Nd3+ co-doped fluoroindate glass is a potential gain material for ~3.9 μm laser applications.

Abstract:The oxyfluoride germanate glass and glass-ceramics were prepared by the melting–annealing method. The composition of the glass was chosen as 45GeO2–30BaF2–5B2O3–15AL2O3–5R2O–xSm2O3 (R=Li, Na, and K. x=1.5, 2.0, and 2.5, mol%). Differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and photoluminescence spectra were carried out to study the effects of the concentration of Sm ions, the kinds of alkali ions and heat treatment on the photoluminescence properties of Sm ion doped oxyfluoride germanate glass. The results showed that the luminescence intensity of the oxyfluoride germanate glass increased when x changed from 1.5 to 2.0 and then decreased when x changed from 2.0 to 2.5. Among various R2O, the Li2O included glass has the strongest luminescence intensity among all the glasses. Heat treatment at 660°C for 4h resulted in the formation of the Ba3AlF9 nanocrystal and enhanced the luminescence intensity of the sample. The mechanism of luminescence intensity increase was discussed.

Abstract:Luminescence behavior of Eu(TTFA)3 and TbSSA co-doped gel has been investigated. The excitation and emission spectra of the EuCl3 and thenoyltrifluoroacetone co-doped gel appeared to exhibit intramolecular energy transfer from the coordinated thenoyltrifluoroacetonate to the europium ions, and the luminescence behavior of sulphosalicylic acid and TbCl3 co-doped gel also indicated the synthesis of TbSSA in the gel. The luminescence behavior of x% Eu(TTFA)3 and (1–x)% TbSSA (x=0–1) co-doped gel changed significantly with the ratio of Eu(TTFA)3 and TbSSA. By adjusting the ratio of the Eu(TTFA)3 and TbSSA in the gel, the luminescence of different colors which resulted from the mixture of the emission bands of Eu3+ ions and Tb3+ ions can be observed.

Abstract:A Ho3+ and Pr3+ co-doped LiLuF4 single crystal was grown successfully by the Czochralski method. The polarized absorption spectra of the as-grown crystal have been investigated as a promising material for similar to 2.95 mu m lasers. Based on the Judd-Ofelt theory, the spectral parameters of Ho3+ in the as-grown crystal were investigated in detail. Moreover, the emission probabilities and branching ratios for Ho3+ transitions from the excited state manifolds to the lower-lying manifolds were also calculated. The stimulated emission cross-sections of the I-5(6) -> I-5(7) transition were calculated by using the Fuchtbauer-Ladenburg (FL) method. The fluorescence lifetime of the I-5(6) and I-5(7) manifold were measured with a value of 1.47 and 1.97 ms, respectively. It shows that Pr3+ ions depopulate the Ho3+ : I-5(7) level and have little influence on the Ho3+ : I-5(6) level at the same time, benefiting the possible population inversion for Ho3+ : I-5(6) -> I-5(7) transition.
