Abstract:The preparation method of porous carbon coated honeycomb ceramic monolithic catalysts is limited to tradi-tional ideas. The porous carbon and the active metal particles are formed step by step. We have designed a novel preparation method and constructed a series of nickel-embedded porous carbon-coated (Ni@C) monolithic catalysts with different carbonization temperatures. Through the synchronous formation of porous carbon and active metal particles, the relationship between porous carbon and metal is changed from "supported " to "embedded ". The "embedded " structure between nickel particles and porous carbon formed at suitable carbonization temperature is an inseparable whole. Correlation characterization results show that the "embedded " structure has not changed the physical-chemical properties of porous carbon. However, the effect on the physical-chemical properties of nickel particles is very significant. Compared with conventional supported nickel-based monolithic catalysts (NiO/C), embedded nickel particles in the Ni@C monolithic catalyst have four characteristics. They are more uniform particle dispersion, smaller average particle size, more difficult to migrate and stable in metallic Ni0 form in air. Based on these advantages, Ni@C monolithic catalysts show better catalytic activity, stability and convenience in the continuous catalytic hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds.
Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol Without External Hydrogen over N-doped Carbon Confined Co Catalysts

Abstract:Non-noble metal catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of biomass using biomass-derived formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source is one of promising strategies for relieving fossil energy crisis. Since acidic FA would destroy and deactivate naked active sites, developing heterogeneous catalysts with stabilized structure and activity that are qualified in harsh conditions is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, mesoporous N-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (Co-N-C) are synthesized through a facile carbonization of Co(phen)(2)(OAc)(2) with nano-MgO as porogen agent. After acid treatment, the optimized Co-N-C-700 (pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C) could afford full furfural (FAL) conversion as well as > 99% furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity with only 3.5 equiv. FA at 150 degrees C for 6 h, exhibiting much superior performance than commercial Pd-, Pt- and Ru-based catalysts. Using molecular H-2 as hydrogen source not only affords low conversion but also leads to over-hydrogenation of FOL and generation of furfuryl formate (FF). This catalyst is very stable in acidic FA and could be recycled 5 times without deactivation or leaching. Co-N-C-700 is also capable for gram-scale transfer hydrogenation of FAL and is versatile for other aldehydes with > 90% yield of desired products. This work could promote the application of encapsulated Co-based catalysts for selective transformation of biomass in chemical industry.
Highly dispersed Co and Ni nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes as efficient catalysts for the reduction of unsaturated oxygen compounds in aqueous phase

Abstract:N-Doped carbon nanotube-encapsulated metal nanoparticles are of great interest in heterogeneous catalysis owing to their improved mass transfer ability and superior stability. Herein, a facile one-pot pyrolysis approach using melamine as the carbon and nitrogen source was developed to fabricate metal nanoparticles embedded in bamboo-like N-doped carbon nanotubes (named as Co@NCNTs-600-800 and Ni@NCNTs-600-800). The optimized Co@NCNTs-600-800 catalyst exhibited outstanding activity in furfural (FAL) selective hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) or cyclopentanone (CPO) in aqueous media. High yields of FOL (100%) and CPO (75.3%) were achieved at 80 degrees C and 140 degrees C, respectively. Besides, this cobalt catalyst showed very good stability and recyclability during the reaction. The synergistic effect between metallic cobalt and N-doped carbon nanotubes was systematically investigated. In addition, the as-prepared Ni@NCNTs-600-800 catalyst also exhibited remarkable activity. Under optimal conditions (100 degrees C and 4 MPa H-2 pressure), a maximum tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFOL) yield (99.5%) was obtained in the aqueous-phase hydrogenation of FAL. The research thus highlights new perspectives for non-noble metal-based N-doped carbon nanotube catalysts for biomass transformation.

Abstract:Since efficient hydrogenation was valued for manufacture of pharmaceutical intermediates and fragrances in recent years, the development of easily accessible heterogeneous catalysts was preferably made. Here we designed a facile one-pot synthesis of Ni modified COF-derived catalyst for selective catalytic hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde. The nickel-based COFs catalyst reduced at 600 °C exhibited better catalytic activity for the selective production of hydrocinnamyl with an excellent yield of 98%, and the nickel-based COFs reduced at 500 °C and 700 °C preferred to selectively produce benzenepropanal. Overall, this work proves cost-effective and sustainable access to the wide application of selective hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:Biomass is the most abundant renewable resource on earth and developing high-performance nonprecious selective hydrogenation (SH) catalysts will enable the use of biomass to replace rapidly diminishing fossil resources. This work utilizes ZIF-67-derived nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes to confine Co nanoparticles (NPs) with Co-Nx active sites as a high-performance SH catalyst. The confined Co NPs with Co-Nx exhibit excellent catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability toward a wide range of biomass-derived compounds. Such active sites can selectively hydrogenate aldehyde, ketone, carboxyl, and nitro groups of biomass-derived compounds into value-added fine chemicals with 100% selectivity. The reported approach could be adopted to create other forms of catalytically active sites from other nonprecious metals.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of biomass into high added‐value chemicals is an efficient way of utilization. However, supported monometallic catalytic systems still show low performance. In this study, different non‐noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) are supported on hierarchically nitrogen‐doped porous carbon (M/HNPC) with high specific surface area and used in the hydrogenation reaction of furfural (FF). The experiment results exhibited that the performance of Ni/HNPC is more superior than Fe, Co and Cu. The DFT results showed that the catalytic activity of Ni/HNPC was strongly related to the intrinsic catalytic performance of Ni metal itself. The Ni/HNPC obtains the 95.2% FF conversion and 94.8% furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity under mild conditions at 110 °C and 4 h, which is mainly due to the synergistic effect between metallic Ni and HNPC support. In addition, the stability of the Ni/HNPC catalyst also has been improved because of the high specific surface area and N‐doped of HNPC support. This work provides an important reference for biomass conversion with a monometallic catalyst by controlling the metal types and supports. M/HNPC (M=Cu, Ni, Co, Fe) samples were prepared using hierarchically nitrogen‐doped porous carbon (HNPC) with a high specific surface area as the support, and used for the selective hydrogenation of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL).

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-bishydroxymethyltetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF), a vital fuel precursor and solvent, is crucial for biomass refining. Herein, we report highly selective and stable PdNi nanoalloy catalysts for this deep hydrogenation process. A CO2-assisted green method was developed for the controllable synthesis of various bimetallic and monometallic catalysts. The PdNi/SBA-15 catalysts with various Pd/Ni ratios exhibited a volcano-like trend between BHMTHF yield and Pd/Ni ratio. Among all catalysts tested, Pd2Ni1/SBA-15 achieved the best performance, converting 99.0% of HMF to BHMTHF with 96.0% selectivity, surpassing previously reported catalysts. Additionally, the Pd2Ni1/SBA-15 catalyst maintained excellent stability even after five recycling runs. Catalyst characterizations (e.g., HAADF-STEM) and DFT calculations confirmed the successful formation of the alloy structure with electron transfer between Ni and Pd, which accounts for the remarkable performance and stability of the catalyst. This work paves the way for developing highly selective and stable alloy catalysts for biomass valorization.

Abstract:A series of hydrothermal carbon-supported nickel catalysts with an Ageratum conyzoides L.-like superstructure derived from green and sustainable cellulose (Ni x /N y HC-SF z ) were fabricated by a facile soft template/nitrogen co-directed hydrothermal assembly strategy. The soft template and nitrogen doping into the hydrothermal carbon framework not only dictated specific morphological evolution for creating the architecture with a mesoporous texture but also significantly tuned the electronic properties of the composites with strong metal–support interactions. Benefiting from these unique characteristics as well as systematic control of the experimental conditions, the hierarchical structured Ni x /N y HC-SF z composites served as promising catalysts with desirable low-temperature tar reforming activity and long-term durability. In particular, the N0.2/N2HC-SF3 composite exhibited a maximum naphthalene conversion of 87.6%, while the N0.2/N4HC-SF3 composite demonstrated an optimum H2 selectivity of 81.2% at a mild temperature of 600 °C. For the Ni0.2/N2HC-SF3 composite, more than 92.8% of the initial naphthalene conversion and 86.5% of initial H2 selectivity were still retained after 10 consecutive cycles. Given the chemical tunability of both active metal species and precursory carbon sources in this fabrication system, we envisioned that the general design principle of low-cost yet high-performance nonprecious nickel catalysts in this work could be extended to the construction of other biochar-based nanomaterials for specific catalytic applications.

Abstract:The electrochemical catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) derived from biomass to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has attracted significant attention. Herein, the catalyst NiO-N/C composite was prepared and showed high activity for the electrochemical oxidation of HMF. The optimized NiO-N/C composite electrode supported by foamed nickel exhibits 99% conversion of HMF, 84% yield of FDCA, and 96% faradic efficiency. The NiO-N/C composite electrode is stable and remains active after six consecutive measurements. This work provides an effective method for the design and preparation of biomass energy electrocatalysts based on nitrogen-modulated NiO materials.

Abstract:The design and facile synthesis of versatile, non-noble metal catalysts with high activity and stability is extremely important for industrial applications. Herein, a novel, simple and one-pot approach of controlled synthesis of graphene encapsulated Fe3C that embedded in carbon nanotubes (denoted as Fe3C@G-CNT) via direct pyrolysis of renewable biomass (glucose, xylitol and sucrose) was reported. Detailed characterizations results indicated that the morphologies and properties of Fe3C@G-CNT composites depended strongly on pyrolysis temperature. Fe3C@G-CNT-700 (prepared at 700 degrees C) was highly active and stable for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines at 40 degrees C, and this catalyst was also active for the selective hydrogenation of C=C bond in several compounds. The synthetic strategy, the structure of iron carbide-based composite and the proposed mechanism may open a new avenue for the development of hydrogenation catalysts. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Catalysts for chemoselective hydrogenation are of vital importance for the synthesis of various important chemicals and intermediates. Herein we developed a simple method for preparing a highly efficient Ni-MoC x nanocomposite catalyst via temperature-programmed carburization of a polyoxometalate precursor. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyses indicate that the resulting mesoporous nanocomposite catalyst is made up of well-dispersed metallic nickel particles embedded in a MoC x matrix. This catalyst exhibits high activity and selectivity (> 99%) in the hydrogenation of various substituted nitroaromatics to corresponding anilines. The high efficiency is attributed to the intimate contact of the constituents favoring electron transfer and hydrogen adsorption. Dihydrogen is physisorbed on the carbide support and dissociates on the nickel particles, as evidenced by Mo K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra, density functional theory (DFT), and hydrogen—deuterium exchange. The remarkable catalytic performance of the catalyst could be traced back to the synergistic interaction between the Ni particles and the carbide support. In-situ infrared spectroscopy and DFT simulations indicated that the adsorption/activation of the nitro group is favored compared to that of other substituents at the aromatic ring. In recyclability tests, the Ni-MoC x nanocomposite showed no significant loss of catalytic performance in seven consecutive runs, indicating its robust nature.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nanotubes (GCNTs) were fabricated from in situ produced graphitic carbon by calcining biomass/melamine/Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O. Ni-based hybrids (NiOx@GCNTs) displayed superior catalytic capacity in direct dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. The specific reaction rate can reach up to 8.1 mu mol m(-2) h(-1), and unprecedented stability was obtained over 165 h without any activation process.
Immobilized Highly Dispersed Ni Nanoparticles over Porous Carbon As an Efficient Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural and Levulinic Acid

Abstract:Sustainable catalysis is the key for the future progress toward biorefinery and bioeconomy. In this work, we designed and developed an inexpensive and eco-friendly Ni@C catalyst for selective hydrogenation of biomass-based platform molecules. A facile synthesized Ni nanoparticles encapsulated in a stabilized carbon support derived from a sacrificial agent copolymer-gel was investigated in the hydrogenation of furfural (FA) to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFOL) and levulinic acid (LA) to gamma-valeralactone (GVL). The aim is to study the two different reactions over a highly stabilized Ni nanoparticles embedded in the carbon matrix. The Ni@C was found to be active and selective in multi-catalyzed hydrogenation reactions. The Ni nanoparticles with small and ultra-fine sizes are highly dispersed over the carbon matrix. This was concluded through high-resolution micrography images (SEM, TEM) and XRD patterns. In both reactions, a complete conversion of furfural and levulinic acid was achieved with maximum selectivity over the Ni@C catalyst. The effect of reaction temperature, solvent type, reaction time, and H-2 pressure were also studied. Overall, optimized reaction conditions were determined, and the Ni@C is easily reusable and exceptionally durable in the studied reaction cycles. The apparent activation energies for FA hydrogenation to THFOL and LA hydrogenation to GVL are 15.4 kJ/mol and 33.6 kJ/mol, respectively.
NiCu Nanoparticles for Catalytic Hydrogenation of Biomass-Derived Carbonyl Compounds

Abstract:For heterogeneous supported catalysts, commonly, the adsorption of reactant molecules on the catalyst surface can significantly govern their activity and selectivity. In this paper, it was shown that surface oxygen-decorated bimetallic NiCu nanoparticles derived from ternary Ni–Cu–Al layered double hydroxide precursors exhibited better catalytic activity trends for the hydrogenolysis of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds compared with monometallic Ni or Cu ones. Specifically, bimetallic NiCu nanocatalyst achieved a maximum cyclopentanone yield of ∼89.5% in the aqueous phase hydrogenation of furfural. Based on a series of structural characterizations, catalytic experimental results, and density functional theory calculations, it was emphatically demonstrated that different catalytic behaviors might stem from the difference in the adsorption modes of the carbonyl group on the surfaces of monometallic Ni and bimetallic NiCu nanoparticles. It was deduced that due to the decoration of abundant surface oxygen species on bimetallic NiCu nanoparticles, the remaining exposed metal surface became η<sup>1</sup>(O)-type adsorption sites for the carbonyl group, different from the dominant η<sup>2</sup>(C, O) adsorption mode on monometallic Ni nanoparticles with less surface oxygen species. Most importantly, the present bimetallic NiCu nanoparticles as catalysts displayed superior catalytic performance in the hydrogenolysis of other carbonyl compounds (e.g., 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, benzaldehyde, and vanillin) to monometallic ones. Abstract:A simple one-pot synthesis of Ni nanoparticle/ordered mesoporous carbon composite electrode materials is demonstrated for electrosynthesis for the first time. The obtained nanocomposites have uniform mesopore sizes (3.0-3.7 nm), large specific surface areas (506-633 m(2) g(-1)), high pore volumes (0.28-0.38 cm(3) g(-1)), well-graphitized carbon frameworks, and uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles (7-15 nm) embedded in the carbon pore walls. The prepared materials show very high performance in the selective (similar to 84%) electrocatalytic reduction of aromatic ketones into alcohols (similar to 79%).
