Abstract:A series of Cr modified graphitic carbon nitride composites (Cr/g-C3N4) was synthesized via a facile wetness impregnation method. Depending on the doping of Cr, the prepared Cr/g-C3N4 catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the one-step hydroxylation of benzene to phenol with H2O2 as the oxidant under mild conditions. Subsequently, various characterization techniques, including XRD, FT-TR, TEM, XPS, N-2 adsorption-desorption, etc., were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of the prepared materials. The catalyst properties such as crystallinity, the main active Cr species and the surface area have been discussed, providing reasonable correlations for the superior catalyst behavior. With the optimization of the reaction parameters, the catalyst displayed remarkable catalytic ability with the highest phenol yield of 30.9%.

Abstract:In this work we adopted, a facile method to synthesis Pd/CeO2/TiO2 nanocomposite in large scale and evaluated its catalytic property towards the benzene hydroxylation into phenol. The as-synthesized Pd/CeO2/TiO2 composite was vigilantly investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, elemental mapping, XPS, TGA and BET studies. The uniformly dispersed Pd/CeO2 /TiO2 with size 5-20 nm shows the high benzene conversion of 73% with 95% selectivity of phenol at 80 degrees C. The influence of various reaction conditions such as role of solvents, temperature, benzene to peroxide molar ratio, reaction time, etc were specifically investigated. The catalyst also showed pronounced photocatalytic activity for hydroxylation of benzene under the visible light conditions. The heterogeneity of the catalyst was additionally confirmed by Sheldon's hot filtration test where no leaching up to 5 cycle, confirming the heterogeneity of the catalyst. Abstract:Co-pyrolysis of plastics and biomass is expected to replace traditional petroleum processing to produce BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) on a large scale, which are important chemical raw materials. The introduction of bimetallic catalysts and hydrogen in co-pyrolysis systems is an effective strategy to increase the content of aromatic hydrocarbons in pyrolysis oils, which has not been studied so far. The present study investigated the efficacy of bimetallic catalysts in enhancing aromatization and Diels-Alder reactions in comparison to Mo/ZSM-5. The synergistic interaction between bimetals contributed to the improved selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons, particularly BTEX. Results revealed that NiMo/ZSM-5 catalysts led to higher aromatics selectivity in liquid oil, whereas FeMo/ZSM-5 resulted in higher BTEX selectivity in aromatic hydrocarbons. Moreover, metal oxide-supported bimetallic catalysts exhibited lower selectivity for aromatic hydrocarbons in liquid oil, despite facilitating higher liquid-oil yield. Among the metal oxide-supported bimetallic catalysts, FeMo/TiO2 demonstrated the highest selectivity (56%) for aromatic hydrocarbons in liquid oils. The introduction of hydrogen resulted in 100% selectivity of BTEX in aromatic hydrocarbons, thus highlighting the significance of hydrogenation in enhancing the selectivity of BTEX. Combined with the experimental results and literature, a possible reaction mechanism was also proposed.

Abstract:Phenol is a key intermediate in chemical industry. The present research work reports facile synthesis of a new copper supported activated red mud as a heterogeneous catalyst for oxidative conversion of benzene to phenol. The process is simple and efficient for one pot hydroxylation reaction using H2O2 as an oxidant. The catalyst was characterized using FTIR, XRD, TEM, XPS and BET surface area analyzer. Catalyst reducible properties were studied using H2-TPR technique. The one-pot hydroxylation reaction, carried out at 75 °C under optimum reaction conditions in presence of catalytic material, shows conversion of benzene to phenol with 84.5 % and 87.1 % selectivity and conversion efficiency, respectively. The proposed mechanism emphasizes upon cooperative effect of residual and embedded metal ions in solid catalyst matrix as the contributing factor for efficient conversion and selectivity. The reusable properties of the material, tested up to 5th consecutive cycles of batch operation, indicate retention of selectivity (83.9 %) as well as conversion efficiency (86.7 %), suitable for future commercial development adhering to the principle of green chemistry.

Abstract:Metal-free carbon materials have attracted growing attention in terms of green and sustainable catalysis processes that could avoid potential metal leaching but usually suffered from inferior activity to metal-loaded counterparts. In this work, we constructed an efficient carbon catalyst via hydrothermal carbonization of biomass-derived feedstock glucose under relatively low temperature (180 °C). The resultant carbon material possessing abundant surface oxygen species effectively catalyzed the benzene hydroxylation with dioxygen (O2), a desirable but very difficult alternative process for producing the important bulk chemical phenol. A considerably high phenol yield of 13.1% was achieved within 4 h, a reaction time much shorter than all the previous metal-free catalysts and even shorter than most efficient metal-based catalysts. The fast reaction is determined by the formation of small-sized primary carbon particles with the abundant surface oxygen species, for which the adsorption enhancing effect in the media of this heterogeneous process was experimentally evidenced.

Single Atomic Cu-N2 Catalytic Sites for Highly Active and Selective Hydroxylation of Benzene to Phenol

Abstract:Searching for an efficient single-atom catalyst for benzene hydroxylation to phenol is of critical importance, but it still remains a challenge. Herein, a single-atom catalyst with unique Cu-N2 moieties (Cu1-N2/HCNS) was prepared and confirmed by HAADF-STEM and EXAFS. Turnover number (TON) over Cu1-N2/HCNS (6,935) is 3.4 times of Cu1-N3/HCNS (2,034) under the same reaction conditions, and both exhibit much higher phenol selectivity (close to 99%) and stability compared with Cu nanoparticles and nanoclusters. Experiments and DFT calculations reveal that atomically dispersed Cu species are active sites for benzene hydroxylation to phenol, and the Cu-N2 is more active than Cu-N3 owing to its much lower energy barrier concerning the activation of H2O2 led by its unique coordination state of local atomic structure. We envision that this work opens a new window for modulating coordination environments of single metallic atoms in catalysis design.

Abstract:The present study proposes biomass torrefaction combined with catalytic pyrolysis to simplify the liquid products and selectively generate aromatic hydrocarbons. Cedarwood was selected as the representative biomass sample. The torrefaction of cedarwood at 250 degrees C and 300 degrees C (TB250 and TB300) was carried out to determine the solid product yield and its composition. It was shown that TB250 yielded the highest lignin feedstock and the yield of acetic acid was decreased to 1.88 %. Different transition metals (Ni/Cr) and Mo2N modified HZSM-5 catalysts with different Si/Al ratios were prepared for catalytic pyrolysis. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of several factors on the final aromatic hydrocarbons yields. The results indicated that with a pyrolysis temperature of 700 degrees C, a catalyst-to-biomass ratio of 5, and 5% Ni-Mo2N/HZSM-5 (Si/Al ratio of 25) catalyzed, the yields of benzene, toluene and xylene could be increased to 2.10 %, 3.94 % and 5.54 %, respectively. Resulting from the excellent reduction ability of the modified catalyst, the yields of naphthalene and methylnaphthalene were reduced to 2.58 % and 0.70 %, respectively.

Abstract:A nitrogen-doped biomass carbon catalyst SFNC(800) was prepared by carbonizing the cheap and readily available soybean flour as the starting material at 800 °C. By combining the SFNC(800) with the Keggin-type V-containing polyoxometalate Ch5PMoV2, a facilely recyclable catalytic system toward liquid-phase reductant-free aerobic oxidation of benzene to phenol was built. The combined catalyst SFNC(800)-Ch5PMoV2 exhibited a high activity with 11.2% phenol yield, 14.04 h–1 turnover frequency (TOF), and high potential for reusability under the optimized reaction conditions. The present TOF value surpassed almost all the ones of other similar previously reported reductant-free LBTP-O2 systems and was even higher than the previous noble metal involved system. On the basis of the characterization results and density functional theory calculations, the structure–activity analysis revealed that the graphitic N-containing moiety in the SFNC(800) is critical to absorb and activate the substrate benzene.

Abstract:A composite catalyst was prepared by impregnation of ZSM-5 in mixture solution of Co(NO3)2, ZrOCl2 and phosphotungstic acid (PW) and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV–vis, XPS, SEM and TEM techniques to confirm its structure and composition. The pre-prepared composite is composed of Co2(PO4)Cl, ZrO2, P2O5 and WO3 crystalline nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on ZSM-5 zeolite. The prepared composite demonstrates effective catalytic function for solvent-free oxidation of toluene into benzaldehyde with H2O2 oxidant, achieving 16.6% conversion and 90% selectivity. The effect of various components composed of the catalyst and reaction conditions on the catalytic function were explored. Moreover, the recovery and reusability of the catalyst were estimated, presenting good reusability.

Abstract:Direct benzene hydroxylation with dioxygen (O2) is among the most promising alternative pathways for green phenol production, but efficient catalysis systems usually involve metal species or other additives such as sacrificial agents. In this work, we designed a carbon catalyst from the hydrothermal treatment of biomass-derived sucrose and constructed a metal-/additive free heterogeneous catalytic system for benzene hydroxylation to phenol with O2. The champion carbon sample gave a high phenol yield of 13.4%. The catalyst was facilely recovered and reused without apparent deactivation. There abundant oxygen functional groups such as phenolic and quinone carbonyl groups served as the active sites and polyfuran units accelerated the O2 adsorption and activation. The synergistic effect of these surficial organic groups is conducive to the formation of reactive oxygen species, hydroxyl radicals, which effectively oxidized the benzene to phenol.

Oxygen-Enriched Biomass-Activated Carbon Supported Platinum Nanoparticles as an Efficient and Durable Catalyst for Oxidation in Benzene

Abstract:Carbon materials have been widely utilized as supports in different catalytic reactions; however, it has been rarely reported that carbon supports were used in the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds because they have no catalytic activity and poor catalytic stability compared to metal supports. Herein, fabricating optimal carbon supports to facilitate the catalytic oxidation of benzene has become a great concern of research. A novel activated carbon (biomass–HCO) was prepared from different waste biomass via a three-stage route without the participation of harmful chemical reagents. The successful synthesis of C–O bonds and C═O bonds through this method could greatly increase oxygen-enriched functional groups and defects of the biomass–HCO surface, which could effectively promote the nucleation and growth of platinum. Benzene oxidation reactions were performed to evaluate the activity of catalysts. The results demonstrated that Pt/biomass–HCO catalyst made the reaction temperature sharply decrease to 160 °C at T90. The 150 h on-stream reaction exhibited great thermal stability of Pt/biomass–HCO. The DFT calculations verified the strong interaction between Pt nanoparticles and carbon supports. Abstract:There is a major challenge to perform the one-pot hydroxylation of benzene to phenol under mild conditions, which replaces the environmentally harmful cumene method. Thus, finding highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts that can be recycled is extremely significant. Herein, a (POM)-based hybrid compound {[FeII(pyim)2(C2H5O)][FeII(pyim)2(H2O)][PMoV2MoVI9VIVO42]}∙H2O (pyim = 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole) (Fe-PMo11V3) was successfully prepared by hydrothermal synthesis using typical Keggin POMs, iron ions and pyim ligands. Single-crystal diffraction shows that the Fe-pyim unit in Fe-PMo11V3 forms a stable double-supported skeleton by Fe-O bonding to the polyacid anion. Remarkably, due to the introduction of vanadium, Fe-PMo11V3 forms a divanadium-capped conformation. Benzene oxidation experiments indicated that Fe-PMo11V3 can catalyze the benzene hydroxylation reaction to phenol in a mixed solution of acetonitrile and acetic acid containing H2O2 at 60 °C, exhibiting phenol yield of about 16.2% and selectivity of about 94%.

Abstract:Noble metal catalyst has an outstanding catalytic activity on the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process, but its high cost limits large-scale application. Herein, we put forward a novel photochemical method to prepare the highly dispersed Pt/TiO2 catalyst with a low metal loading. And it presented an efficient performance on the HDO of phenolic compounds and real bio-oil. Guaiacol could be converted into cyclohexane with 95.1% selectivity at 280 degrees C under 1 MPa H-2 atmosphere. Characterization results revealed that the high Pt dispersion was the critical factor for the high catalytic activity. And the photochemical method preferred to achieve high metal dispersion due to the room temperature condition. Other typical phenolic monomers and dimers were able to transform into hydrocarbons with most yield above 80%, wherein not only the deoxygenation step, but also the cleavage of ether bonds can be realized in one pot. This catalytic system was also effective on the upgrade of bio-oil derived from the pyrolysis of cotton straw. Hydrocarbon content increased to 33.80% from 11.33%. Alkylphenols content increased to 51.38% from 27.86%. These two products can be used as value-added fuels and chemicals, respectively. Guaiacols and syringols were completely converted into alkylphenols and hydrocarbon. The amount of other oxygenated compounds also decreased significantly. This simple and active catalytic system is potential to apply widely for the upgrade of raw bio-oil.
Preassembly Strategy To Fabricate Porous Hollow Carbonitride Spheres Inlaid with Single Cu-N3 Sites for Selective Oxidation of Benzene to Phenol

Abstract:Developing single-atom catalysts with porous micro-/nanostructures for high active-site accessibility is of great significance but still remains a challenge. Herein, we for the first time report a novel template-free preassembly strategy to fabricate porous hollow graphitic carbonitride spheres with single Cu atoms mounted via thermal polymerization of supramolecular preassemblies composed of a melamine-Cu complex and cyanuric acid. Atomically dispersed Cu-N3 moieties were unambiguously confirmed by spherical aberration correction electron microscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. More importantly, this material exhibits outstanding catalytic performance for selective oxidation of benzene to phenol at room temperature, especially showing phenol selectivity (90.6 vs 64.2%) and stability much higher than those of the supported Cu nanoparticles alone, originating from the isolated unique Cu-N3 sites in the porous hollow structure. An 86% conversion of benzene, with an unexpectedly high phenol selectivity of 96.7% at 60 °C for 12 h, has been achieved, suggesting a great potential for practical applications. This work paves a new way to fabricate a variety of single-atom catalysts with diverse graphitic carbonitride architectures.

Abstract:We report an efficient, highly selective, and low temperature graphene-catalyzed reaction process for one-step oxidation of benzene to phenol with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. The chemically converted graphene (CCG) from small graphite was used as the catalyst. The conversion of benzene reaches 18%, with phenol being the sole product. The catalyst was reusable and very stable. By XPS, C K-edge X-ray absorption spectra, benzene-TPD, and kinetic measurements, it was concluded that the moderate H2O2 activation rate, good benzene adsorption ability, and balanced kinetic control over the oxidation reaction are responsible for the outstanding catalytic performance of the metal-free catalyst.

Abstract:How to achieve high value modification of biomass through simple process and low cost is an important bottleneck in the development of biomass energy. In this study, hydrogen-rich syngas, phenol-rich bio-oil and high specific surface area nanostructured porous carbon materials were synthesized by one-step in situ catalytic pyrolysis at 500 °C. Composition and physicochemical property tests of the three-phase products showed that KOH promotes ring opening and bond breaking of macromolecules in the bio-oil, improves the directional selectivity of phenolic compounds, and generates more small molecule gases. Molten K + and water vapor etched the biomass to prepare porous carbon with high graphitization and rich pore structure and generate more H 2 . Further electrochemical characterization showed that the porous carbon material had good specific capacitance and cyclic stability. This study provides a new idea for the utilization of pyrolysis polygeneration technology of agroforestry biomass resources, and it is also of guiding significance for the research of high-value utilization of biomass resources.

Abstract:Cu x O y @C was directly prepared with glucose and a copper(II) salt by a one-pot hydrothermal method. The catalyst was characterized by XRD, TG, XPS, FT-IR and SEM. The catalytic performance for the hydroxylation of benzene to phenol in acetonitrile with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant was investigated. The features of the reaction system with the prepared heterogeneous catalyst were studied by various reaction parameters including reaction temperature, catalyst amount, hydrogen peroxide amount, reaction time, effect of solvents and additives. The result showed that solvent and additive affect the yield of phenol.

Abstract:A generalized rapid annealing strategy for diverse metal clusters is developed. Among them, the Pt nanoclusters/TiO2 exhibit almost 100% conversion rate and 100% selectivity of KA oil in phenol hydrogenation at room temperature and normal pressure, together with the achievement of semi‐continuous production of KA oil at large scale. Homogeneous and nanometric metal clusters with unique electronic structures are promising for catalysis, however, common synthesis techniques for metal clusters suffer from large size and even metal nanocrystals attributing to their high surface energy and unsaturated configurations. Herein, a generalized rapid annealing strategy for synthesizing a series of supported metal clusters as superior catalysts is developed. Remarkably, TiO2 supported platinum nanoclusters (Pt NC/TiO2) exhibits the excellent catalytic activity to realize phenol hydrogenation under mild conditions. The complete phenol conversion rate and 100% selectivity toward KA oil are achieved in aqueous solution at room temperature and normal pressure. Semi‐continuous scale up production of KA oil is successfully performed under mild conditions. Such excellent performance mainly originates from the partial reconstruction of Pt NC/TiO2 in aqueous phenol solution. Considering that the phenol can be produced from lignin, this study underpins a facile, sustainable, and economical route to synthesize nylon from biomass.
