Abstract:Novel SHG effective inorganic open-framework chalcohalides, Ba(3)AGa(5)Se(10)Cl(2) (A = Cs, Rb and K), have been synthesized by high temperature solid state reactions. These compounds crystallize in the tetragonal space group I (4) over bar (No.82) with a = b = 8.7348(6) - 8.6341(7) angstrom, c = 15.697(3) - 15.644(2) angstrom, V = 1197.6(3) - 466.2(2) angstrom(3) on going from Cs to K. The polar framework of (3)infinity[Ga5Se10](5-) is constructed by nonpolar GaSe45- tetrahedron (T1) and polar supertetrahedral cluster Ga4Se108- (T2) in a zinc-blende topological structure with Ba/A cations,and Cl anions residing in the tunnels. Remarkably, Ba3CsGa5Se10Cl2 exhibits the strongest intensity at 2.05 mu m (about 100 times that of the benchmark AgGaS2 in the particle size of 30-46 mu m) among chalcogenides, halides, and chalcohalides. Furthermore, these compounds are also the first open-framework compounds with red photoluminescent emissions. The Vienna ab initio theoretical studies analyze electronic structures and linear and nonlinear optical properties.

Abstract:A crystalline three-dimensional (3D) quaternary chalcohalide, Hg7InS6Cl5 (1), has been synthesized through a solid-state reaction under medium temperature. It is the first example in the family of the Hg-IIIA-Q-X (Q = S, Se, Te; X = F, Cl, Br, I) systems. Compound 1 features a 3D network and has an optical band gap of 2.54 eV.

Abstract:The salt-inclusion materials have drawn significant attention for their manifold structural chemistry and novel physical/chemical properties. Herein, two new salt-inclusion chalcohalides, [Cs 6 Cl][Ga 5 GeQ 12 ] (Q = S, Se), have been discovered via high-temperature flux methods. The two isostructural compounds are constructed by porous [Ga 5 GeQ 12 ] 5− layers with [ClCs 6 ] 5+ octahedra filled in the holes. The [Ga 5 GeQ 12 ] 5− layer is composed of the honeycomb-like (Ga/Ge) 18 Q 42 rings containing (Ga/Ge) 3 Q 9 trimer as basic unit. The band gaps of the two compounds are 3.90 and 2.89 eV, respectively. [Cs 6 Cl][Ga 5 GeS 12 ] exhibits interesting two-band emission properties which are related to the intermediate-band electronic structure revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Owing to the porous layered structure, [Cs 6 Cl][Ga 5 GeS 12 ] exhibits topological ion exchange ability towards Cd 2+ ions with the maximum sorption capacity of 250 mg/g and high distribution coefficient ( K d ) near 10 6 mL/g. This work further enriches the structural diversity of salt-inclusion materials and extends their potential application range to ion exchange adsorption.

Abstract:Six isostructural antiperovskite-derived chalcohalides, Ba(2)MQ(3)X (M = As, Sb; Q = S, Se; X = Cl, Br, I), crystallizing in the space group Pnma, have been synthesized by solid-state reactions. The crystal structure features a 3D framework with the [XBa5](9+) disordered square pyramids as building blocks and [MQ(3)](3-) units filling the interspace. [XBa5](9+) disordered square pyramids are edge-sharing along [OM], derived from, the fusing of the two pyramids in octahedral [XBa6](11+). Surprisingly, Ba2AsS3X (X = Cl, Br, I) show almost the same optical band gap of 2.80 eV, and Ba2AsSe3X (X = Br, I) also have a similar band gap of 2.28 eV. The optical band gap of Ba2SbS3I is 2.64 eV. First-principles calculations reveal that the optical absorption is attributed to the transitions between Q np at the valence band maximum (VBM) and M np-Q np at the zonthiction band minimum (CBM). These compounds also possess interesting photoluminescence properties with splitting emission peaks on excitation at 200 nm.

Abstract:Four new quaternary selenides CsGdZnSe3, CsZrCuSe3, CsUCuSe3, and BaGdCuSe3 have been synthesized with the use of traditional high-temperature solid-state experimental methods. These compounds are isostructural with KZrCuS3, crystallizing with four formula units in the orthorhombic space group Cmcm. Cell constants (A) at 153 K are CsGdZnSe3 4.1684(7), 15.765(3), 11.0089(18); CsZrCuSe3 3.903(2), 15.841(10), 10.215(6); CsUCuSe3 4.1443(7), 15.786(3), 10.7188(18); and BaGdCuSe3 4.1839(6), 13.8935(19), 10.6692(15). The structure of these ALnMSe3 compounds (A = Cs, Ba; Ln = Zr, Gd, U; M = Cu, Zn) is composed of 2 to infinity [LnMSe3(n-)] (n = 1, 2) layers separated by A atoms. The Ln atom is octahedrally coordinated to six Se atoms, the M atom is tetrahedrally coordinated to four Se atoms, and the A atom is coordinated to a bicapped trigonal prism of eight Se atoms. Because there are no Se-Se bonds in the structure, the oxidation state of A is 1+ (Cs) or 2+ (Ba), that of Ln is 3+ (Gd) or 4+ (Zr, U), and that of M is 1+ (Cu) or 2+ (Zn). CsGdZnSe3 and BaGdCuSe3, which are paramagnetic, obey the Curie-Weiss law and have effective magnetic moments of 7.87(6) and 7.85(5) muB for Gd(3+), in good agreement with the theoretical value of 7.94 muB. Optical transitions at 1.88 and 2.92 eV for CsGdZnSe3 and 1.96 eV for BaGdCuSe3 were deduced from diffuse reflectance spectra.

Abstract:The most advanced UV-vis and IR NLO materials are usually borates and chalcogenides, respectively. But thioborates, especially thio-borometalates, are extremely rare. Here, four new such compounds are discovered by solid state reactions representing 0D structures constructed by isolated BQ3 trigonal planes and discrete MQ3 pyramids with Ba(2+) cations filling among them, centrosymmetric monoclinic P21/c Ba3(BS3)1.5(MS3)0.5 (M = Sb, Bi) 1, 2 with a = 12.9255(9), 12.946(2) Å; b = 21.139(2), 21.170(2)Å; c = 8.4194(6), 8.4207(8) Å; β = 101.739(5), 101.688(7)°; V = 2252.3(3), 2259.9(3) Å(3) and noncentrosymmetric hexagonal P6̅2m Ba3(BQ3)(SbQ3) (Q = S, Se) 3, 4 with a = b = 17.0560(9), 17.720(4) Å; c = 10.9040(9), 11.251(3) Å; V = 2747.1(3), 3060(2) Å(3). 3 exhibits the strongest SHG among thioborates that is about three times that of the benchmark AgGaS2 at 2.05 μm. 1 and 3 also show an interesting structure relationship correlated to the size mismatching of the anionic building units that can be controlled by the experimental loading ratio of B:Sb. Syntheses, structure characterizations, and electronic structures based on the density functional theory calculations are reported.

Abstract:Seven nonlinear optical (NLO) active selenides in the middle IR region, AX(II)4X(III)5Se12 (A = K(+)-Cs(+); X(II) = Mn(2+), Cd(2+); X(III) = Ga(3+), In(3+)) adopting the KCd4Ga5S12-type structure, have been synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction of an elemental mixture with ACl flux. Their three-dimensional network structures are stacked by M9Se24-layers of vertex sharing MSe4 tetrahedra, of which each center is jointly occupied by X(II) and X(III) atoms. Studies suggest that such tetrahedral building units can be regarded as the "multi-functional sites", on which the Cd(2+)/Ga(3+) pair gives rise to the coexistence of NLO and thermochromic properties, and the Mn(2+)/In(3+) pair leads to the coexistence of NLO and magnetic properties. The density functional theory (DFT) studies and the cutoff-energy-dependent NLO coefficient analyses reveal that such "multi-functional sites" contribute to the origin of the second harmonic generation (SHG) that is ascribed to the electronic transitions from the Se-4p states to the ns, np states of X(II) and X(III) atoms. Remarkably, title compounds show very strong SHG at an incident wavelength of 2.05 μm, roughly 16-40 times that of commercial AgGaS2; among them, ACd4In5Se12 (A = Rb, Cs) represents the strongest SHG among chalcogenides to date.

Abstract:Eight quaternary rare-earth chalcogenides, RbNd2CuS4, RbSm2CuS4, CsLa2CuSe4, CsSm2CuSe4, RbEr2Cu3S5, CsGd2Ag3Se5, CsTb2Ag3Se5, and Rb2Gd4Cu4S9, have been synthesized at 973 K with the use of a reactive flux of A2Q3 (A=Rb, Cs; Q=S, Se). All structural data were obtained at 153 K. The isostructural compounds ALn2CuQ4 (Ln=rare earth) crystallize with four formula units in the KGd2CuS4 structure type in space group Cmcm of the orthorhombic system; the isostructural compounds ALn2M3Q5 (M=Cu, Ag) crystallize with four formula units in the RbSm2Ag3Se5 structure type in space group Cmcm of the orthorhombic system; and Rb2Gd4Cu4S9 crystallizes with two formula units in space group C2/m of the monoclinic system. The cell dimensions of ALn2CuQ4 (a, b, c (Å)) are as follows: RbNd2CuS4, 4.0762(3), 13.954(1), 13.964(1); RbSm2CuS4, 4.0391(3), 13.815(1), 13.860(1); CsLa2CuSe4, 4.3129(6), 14.959(2), 14.798(2); CsSm2CuSe4, 4.2066(3), 14.6101(9), 14.5164(9). The corresponding R1 indices for the refined structures are 0.0264, 0.0196, 0.0258, and 0.0224. The cell dimensions of ALn2M3Q5 are as follows: RbEr2Cu3S5, 3.9283(3), 13.897(1), 16.348(1); CsGd2Ag3Se5, 4.2943(4), 15.424(1), 17.501(2); CsTb2Ag3Se5, 4.2779(4), 15.429(2), 17.426(2). The R1 indices are 0.0257, 0.0255, and 0.0241. The cell dimensions of Rb2Gd4Cu4S9 (a, b, c (Å), β (°)) is 13.897(1), 3.9883(3), 16.054(1), 109.273(1), and the R1 index is 0.0199. All eight compounds have closely related three-dimensional tunnel structures. All alkali metal atoms in the tunnels are coordinated to eight Q atoms. Their anionic frameworks are built from LnQ6 octahedra and MQ4 tetrahedra. ALn2CuQ4 contains 1∞[CuQ3] chains of vertex-sharing tetrahedra; Rb2Gd4Cu4S9 contains 1∞[Cu4S8] chains of tetrahedra; and ALn2M3Q5 contains 2∞[M3Q5] layers of tetrahedra. Rb2Gd4Cu4S9 and RbEr2Cu3S5, which are paramagnetic, obey the Curie–Weiss law, and have effective magnetic moments of 7.9(2) μB for Gd3+ and 9.43(5) μB for Er3+. A band gap of 1.94 eV for Rb2Gd4Cu4S9 was deduced from its diffuse reflectance spectrum, and the typical 4f–4f optical transitions for Er3+ were found in RbEr2Cu3S5 at about 1.6, 1.9, and 2.5 eV.
AIB3IIC3IIIQ8VI: A New Family for the Design of Infrared Nonlinear Optical Materials by Coupling Octahedra and Tetrahedra Units.

Abstract:Large second-harmonic generation (SHG) response and broad band gap are two important and competitive parameters. It is difficult to balance them out in one material. In this work, by coupling alkali earth metal (AEM) octahedra with large highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gap and nonlinear optical (NLO)-active tetrahedra units, nine noncentrosymmetric (NCS) compounds, belonging to a new quaternary chalcogenide family AIB3IIC3IIIQ8VI with unique windmill-like [Mg3M3IIIQ24] (MIII = Al, Ga; Q = S, Se) units constructed by alternated [MgQ6] octahedra and [MIIIQ4] tetrahedra, are rationally designed and fabricated. The compounds show a stable structural framework but adjustable optical properties. Among them, NaMg3Ga3Se8 shows a large SHG response (∼1 × AgGaS2 (AGS)), wide band gap (in selenide) (2.77 eV), high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) (∼2.3 × AGS), and suitable birefringence (0.079@546 nm). It should be a potential candidate for infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. The results enrich the chemical diversity of chalcogenides and open an avenue for the development of new IR NLO materials through the octahedra and tetrahedra coupled strategy.

[Ba4X][In19S32] (X = Cl, Br): two quaternary metal chalcohalides exhibiting remarkable photocurrent responses

Abstract:Inorganic metal chalcohalides, as significant semiconductor materials, have emerged as promising candidates for photoelectric applications. Herein, a new type of quaternary chalcohalide, [Ba4X][In19S32] (X = Cl, Br), has been discovered using the high-temperature halide salt flux method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that they are isostructural and crystallize in the tetragonal space group I4(1)/amd (no. 141) featuring the octahedral hole formed by six [InS4](5- )tetrahedra filled with a [ClBa4](7+ )polycation, surrounded by a three-dimensional covalent framework formed by interconnecting [InS6](9-) octahedra through corner-sharing and edge-sharing. Moreover, [Ba4Cl][In19S32] and [Ba4Br][In19S32] exhibit wide optical bandgaps of 2.70 eV and 2.46 eV, respectively, and moderate birefringences (0.044 @ 2100 nm and 0.042 @ 2100 nm, respectively). Specifically, [Ba4X][In19S32] (X = Cl, Br) display remarkable photocurrent responses under simulated solar-light illumination, implying their potential for photocatalytic applications. Theoretical calculations were employed to understand the interrelationship between the optical properties and electronic structure. The study on the synthesis and structure-property relationship analysis of inorganic metal chalcohalides provides new insight into the exploration of promising photoelectric materials.
Open Honeycomb Frameworks of Sulphides AHg4Ga5S12 (A = Rb, Cs) Exhibiting Infrared Nonlinear Optical Properties

Abstract:A crystal structure with a diamond-like anionic framework belongs to a non-centrosymmetric macrostructure due to the aligned arrangement of tetrahedral units, meeting the premise of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Herein, two new Hg-based sulphides, namely, RbHg4Ga5S12 (1) and CsHg4Ga5S12 (2), which are isostructural and crystallised in the trigonal space group R3, are successfully isolated in sealed silica tubes by solid-state reaction. The features of their three-dimensional open honeycomb frameworks are attributed to the parallel alignment of tetrahedral MS4 (M is disordered by 0.444 Hg and 0.555 Ga) building motifs, accompanied by Rb+ (or Cs+) reseating in the cavities. Notably, although the band gap values of 1 and 2 are 2.30 and 2.36 eV, separately, their thermal expansion anisotropies (0.15 and 0.41, respectively) are favourable in achieving laser-induced damage thresholds (5.6 × and 5.8 × AgGaS2 for 1 and 2, respectively). In addition, the strong polarisability of tetrahedral MS4 building motifs in the diamond-like anionic structures is responsible for the promising second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensities (1.1 and 1.8 × AgGaS2 for 1 and 2, respectively) in the particle size range of 50–75 μm with non-phase-matchable behaviour at 1910 nm. Furthermore, theoretical investigation elaborates that electron transitions in compounds 1 and 2 mainly occur from valence band S-3p to conduction band Hg-6s and Ga-4s states, demonstrating that the linear and nonlinear optical properties originate primarily from the synergy of tetrahedral MS4 units.

Abstract:A new series of novel isostructural metal chalcogenides, K2CuIn3Se6 (1), K2CuGa3Se6 (2), and K2AgIn3Se6 (3), were obtained by a reactive flux technique and structurally characterized. Compounds 1, 2, and 3 crystallize in the space group C2/c of the monoclinic system with eight formula units in a cell: a = 11.445(2) Angstrom, b = 11.495(2) Angstrom, c = 21.263(4) Angstrom, beta = 97.68(3)degrees, V = 2772(1) Angstrom(3), R1/wR2 = 0.0676/0.1652 for 1; a = 11.031(2) Angstrom, b = 11.050(4) Angstrom, c = 20.808(7) Angstrom, beta = 97.71(2)degrees, V = 2513(1) Angstrom(3), R1/wR2 = 0.0301/0.0511 for 2; and a = 11.633(1) Angstrom, b = 11.587(1) Angstrom, c = 21.355(1) Angstrom, beta = 98.010(8)degrees, V = 2850.4(4) Angstrom(3), R1/wR2 = 0.0471/0.0732 for 3. These isostructural compounds are characterized by a chain-sublayer-chain slab structure. The sublayer, composed of alternative corner-sharing mixed-metal tetrahedra, is sandwiched by parallel corner-sharing tetrahedral chains. Optical absorption spectra of compounds 1, 2, and 3 reveal the presence of a sharp optical gap of 1.68, 1.72, and 1.64 eV, respectively, suggesting that these materials are semiconductors and suitable for efficient absorption of solar radiation in solar cell applications. IR spectra show no obvious absorption in the range 800-4000 cm(-1).

Abstract:Two new non‐centrosymmetric chalcogenides, ACuGa6S10 (A = Rb, Cs) have been successfully synthesized by an "iterative substitution" strategy based on chalcopyrite CuFeS2 structural template. Benefiting from the substitution of Fe3+ cations by Ga3+ cations, ACuGa6S10 (A = Rb, Cs) exhibit wide suitable band gap of 2.48 and 2.40 eV, respectively, which is about five times higher than their structure template CuFeS2, and the large second harmonic generation response (1.5 and 1.8 × AgGaS2). Combining theoretical calculation and structural analysis confirm that the [GaS4] tetrahedra make the main contribution on their good liner and nonlinear optical (NLO) performances. The "iterative substitution" strategy expands the design idea of materials and can lead to the discovery of a large number of IR NLO compounds.

Abstract:Chalcogenides are promising candidates for exploring mid- and far-infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Nevertheless, although tellurides possess greater advantages in the above-mentioned spectral regions, the reports on telluride NLO materials are far fewer than those on sulfides and selenides. In this work, a new quaternary NLO-active telluride, KCd4Ga5Te12, was discovered, and its Rb and Cs analogues were successfully synthesized. They are crystallized in the trigonal R3 space group and the structure features a 3D diamond-like framework constructed by vertex-sharing asymmetric MTe4 tetrahedra (centered by disordered Cd and Ga) that are stacked along the c-axis. Moreover, a comprehensive study of their IR NLO properties, photoluminescence properties, and structural features was performed. These compounds exhibited large powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensities, about 2.1 (2.7, 4.4) times that of AgGaSe2 in the particle size range of 20–50 (125–150) μm and a wide transmission range (∼25 μm). The SHG-density analysis revealed that the largest component χ333 (2) of KCd4Ga5Te12 originates from three types of Te in the crystal structure. More importantly, it is rare in literature to demonstrate the consistency of linear and NLO properties calculated using both ultrasoft pseudopotentials and norm-conservation pseudopotentials. Besides, the title compounds also exhibit strong luminescence emissions around 420 and 470 nm at 298 K. This work implies that title compounds are promising candidates in the IR NLO applications.
