Abstract:Chalcogenides are promising candidates for exploring mid- and far-infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Nevertheless, although tellurides possess greater advantages in the above-mentioned spectral regions, the reports on telluride NLO materials are far fewer than those on sulfides and selenides. In this work, a new quaternary NLO-active telluride, KCd4Ga5Te12, was discovered, and its Rb and Cs analogues were successfully synthesized. They are crystallized in the trigonal R3 space group and the structure features a 3D diamond-like framework constructed by vertex-sharing asymmetric MTe4 tetrahedra (centered by disordered Cd and Ga) that are stacked along the c-axis. Moreover, a comprehensive study of their IR NLO properties, photoluminescence properties, and structural features was performed. These compounds exhibited large powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensities, about 2.1 (2.7, 4.4) times that of AgGaSe2 in the particle size range of 20–50 (125–150) μm and a wide transmission range (∼25 μm). The SHG-density analysis revealed that the largest component χ333 (2) of KCd4Ga5Te12 originates from three types of Te in the crystal structure. More importantly, it is rare in literature to demonstrate the consistency of linear and NLO properties calculated using both ultrasoft pseudopotentials and norm-conservation pseudopotentials. Besides, the title compounds also exhibit strong luminescence emissions around 420 and 470 nm at 298 K. This work implies that title compounds are promising candidates in the IR NLO applications.

Abstract:Two new non‐centrosymmetric chalcogenides, ACuGa6S10 (A = Rb, Cs) have been successfully synthesized by an "iterative substitution" strategy based on chalcopyrite CuFeS2 structural template. Benefiting from the substitution of Fe3+ cations by Ga3+ cations, ACuGa6S10 (A = Rb, Cs) exhibit wide suitable band gap of 2.48 and 2.40 eV, respectively, which is about five times higher than their structure template CuFeS2, and the large second harmonic generation response (1.5 and 1.8 × AgGaS2). Combining theoretical calculation and structural analysis confirm that the [GaS4] tetrahedra make the main contribution on their good liner and nonlinear optical (NLO) performances. The "iterative substitution" strategy expands the design idea of materials and can lead to the discovery of a large number of IR NLO compounds.

Abstract:Seven nonlinear optical (NLO) active selenides in the middle IR region, AX(II)4X(III)5Se12 (A = K(+)-Cs(+); X(II) = Mn(2+), Cd(2+); X(III) = Ga(3+), In(3+)) adopting the KCd4Ga5S12-type structure, have been synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction of an elemental mixture with ACl flux. Their three-dimensional network structures are stacked by M9Se24-layers of vertex sharing MSe4 tetrahedra, of which each center is jointly occupied by X(II) and X(III) atoms. Studies suggest that such tetrahedral building units can be regarded as the "multi-functional sites", on which the Cd(2+)/Ga(3+) pair gives rise to the coexistence of NLO and thermochromic properties, and the Mn(2+)/In(3+) pair leads to the coexistence of NLO and magnetic properties. The density functional theory (DFT) studies and the cutoff-energy-dependent NLO coefficient analyses reveal that such "multi-functional sites" contribute to the origin of the second harmonic generation (SHG) that is ascribed to the electronic transitions from the Se-4p states to the ns, np states of X(II) and X(III) atoms. Remarkably, title compounds show very strong SHG at an incident wavelength of 2.05 μm, roughly 16-40 times that of commercial AgGaS2; among them, ACd4In5Se12 (A = Rb, Cs) represents the strongest SHG among chalcogenides to date.

Abstract:The exploration of noncentrosymmetric chalcogenides is important for discovering second-oeder nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. We herein report two new gallium thioantimonates, (NH4)2.7Cs1.3Ga4SbS9S0.3O0.7H (GaSbS-I) and Cs4Ga4SbS9S0.3O0.7H (GaSbS-II), which have been successfully synthesized by facile solvothermal methods. GaSbS-I and GaSbS-II are isostructural, and they exhibit a three-dimensional open framework constructed by [Ga4S9Q] units and [SbS3] units. Both two compounds are second harmonic generation (SHG) active with powder SHG efficiencies of 1.2 and 1.4 times that of the benchmark KH2PO4 (KDP) in a non-phase-matching behavior at 1064 nm. The calculated band gaps for GaSbS-I and GaSbS-II are 2.08 and 2.36 eV, respectively, consistent with the experimental values of 2.60 and 2.95 eV. Abstract:Novel SHG effective inorganic open-framework chalcohalides, Ba(3)AGa(5)Se(10)Cl(2) (A = Cs, Rb and K), have been synthesized by high temperature solid state reactions. These compounds crystallize in the tetragonal space group I (4) over bar (No.82) with a = b = 8.7348(6) - 8.6341(7) angstrom, c = 15.697(3) - 15.644(2) angstrom, V = 1197.6(3) - 466.2(2) angstrom(3) on going from Cs to K. The polar framework of (3)infinity[Ga5Se10](5-) is constructed by nonpolar GaSe45- tetrahedron (T1) and polar supertetrahedral cluster Ga4Se108- (T2) in a zinc-blende topological structure with Ba/A cations,and Cl anions residing in the tunnels. Remarkably, Ba3CsGa5Se10Cl2 exhibits the strongest intensity at 2.05 mu m (about 100 times that of the benchmark AgGaS2 in the particle size of 30-46 mu m) among chalcogenides, halides, and chalcohalides. Furthermore, these compounds are also the first open-framework compounds with red photoluminescent emissions. The Vienna ab initio theoretical studies analyze electronic structures and linear and nonlinear optical properties.

Abstract:A crystal structure with a diamond-like anionic framework belongs to a non-centrosymmetric macrostructure due to the aligned arrangement of tetrahedral units, meeting the premise of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Herein, two new Hg-based sulphides, namely, RbHg4Ga5S12 (1) and CsHg4Ga5S12 (2), which are isostructural and crystallised in the trigonal space group R3, are successfully isolated in sealed silica tubes by solid-state reaction. The features of their three-dimensional open honeycomb frameworks are attributed to the parallel alignment of tetrahedral MS4 (M is disordered by 0.444 Hg and 0.555 Ga) building motifs, accompanied by Rb+ (or Cs+) reseating in the cavities. Notably, although the band gap values of 1 and 2 are 2.30 and 2.36 eV, separately, their thermal expansion anisotropies (0.15 and 0.41, respectively) are favourable in achieving laser-induced damage thresholds (5.6 × and 5.8 × AgGaS2 for 1 and 2, respectively). In addition, the strong polarisability of tetrahedral MS4 building motifs in the diamond-like anionic structures is responsible for the promising second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensities (1.1 and 1.8 × AgGaS2 for 1 and 2, respectively) in the particle size range of 50–75 μm with non-phase-matchable behaviour at 1910 nm. Furthermore, theoretical investigation elaborates that electron transitions in compounds 1 and 2 mainly occur from valence band S-3p to conduction band Hg-6s and Ga-4s states, demonstrating that the linear and nonlinear optical properties originate primarily from the synergy of tetrahedral MS4 units.

Abstract:What sets this apart from previously reported chemical substitutions is the utilization of an unusual cationic substitution strategy, offers two excellent infrared nonlinear optical materials, which provides a feasible chemical design insight for constructing high‐performance nonlinear optical materials. The typical chalcopyrite AgGaQ2 (Q = S, Se) are commercial infrared (IR) second‐order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials; however, they suffer from unexpected laser‐induced damage thresholds (LIDTs) primairy due to their narrow band gaps. Herein, what sets this apart from previously reported chemical substitutions is the utilization of an unusual cationic substitution strategy, represented by [[SZn4]S12 + [S4Zn13]S24 + 11ZnS4 ⇒ MS12+ [M4Cl]S24 + 11GaS4], in which the covalent SxZny units in the diamond‐like sphalerite ZnS are synergistically replaced by cationic MxCly units, resulting in two novel salt‐inclusion sulfides, M[M4Cl][Ga11S20] (M = A/Ba, A = K, 1; Rb, 2). As expected, the introduction of mixed cations in the GaS4 anionic frameworks of 1 and 2 leads to wide band gaps (3.04 and 3.01 eV), which exceeds the value of AgGaS2, facilitating the improvement of high LIDTs (9.4 and 10.3 × AgGaS2@1.06 μm, respectively). Furthermore, compounds 1 and 2 exhibit moderate second‐harmonic generation intensities (0.84 and 0.78 × AgGaS2@2.9 μm, respectively), mainly originating from the orderly packing tetrahedral GaS4 units. Importantly, this study demonstrates the successful application of the cationic substitution strategy based on diamond‐like structures to provide a feasible chemical design insight for constructing high‐performance NLO materials.

Abstract:Four layered quaternary sulfides KAgCdS2 (1), RbAgCdS2 (2), CsAgCdS2 (3), and Cs2Cu2Cd2S4 (4) have been successfully synthesized by mild solvothermal methods by employing excess sulfur as a mineralizer. Compound 1 possesses anionic [AgCdS2]n n− double layers. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural and contain anionic [AgCdS2]n n− single layers. Although both of the two structures are constructed by edge-sharing [MS4] (M = Ag/Cd) tetrahedral units, their condensation behaviors are totally different. The structure of 4 consists of infinite [Cd2S4]n 4n− chains and [CuS2]2- dumbbells that linked to form [Cu2Cd2S4]n 2n− layers. According to the UV–vis diffuse reflectance experiments, the band gaps of the title compounds are 1.92 eV (1), 2.16 eV (2), 2.42 eV (3), and 2.23 eV (4). Additionally, the photoelectrochemical experiments indicate that compounds 2 and 3 exhibit excellent photocurrent responsive properties.

Abstract:This work reports the preparation of new quaternary sulfides Cs2Ln3CuS8 (Ln = La-Nd, Sm-Tb), their original crystal and electronic structures, and their magnetic properties. The sulfides were prepared using a reactive flux method from mixtures of Ln2S3 (EuS), Cs2S6, Cu2S, and S. They crystallize in a new type of structure (C2/m space group) and exhibit a layer-like crystal structure, which is a hybrid of those of the ACe2CuS6 series (A = Cs, K) and that of K2CeCu2S4. The values of the optical band gap calculated by the Kubelka-Munk equation are in the range of 1.2-2.62 eV depending on the nature of the Ln ion. The Cs2Gd3CuS8 compound displays relatively great magnetic refrigerating properties at cryogenic temperature with the mass entropy change (-ΔSM) reaching 19.5 J kg-1 K-1 at 3.5 K for ΔH = 5 T.

Abstract:Chalcogenides are the most promising mid- and far-infrared materials for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. Yet, most of them are sulfides and selenides, and tellurides are still rare. Herein, we report three new KCd4Ga5S12-structure type NLO-active tellurides, (CsX4In5Te12)-In-II (X-II = Mn, Zn, Cd), synthesized by solid-state reactions. The structure features a 3D diamond-like framework constructed by vertex-sharing asymmetric MTe4 tetrahedra that are stacked along the c-axis. CsCd4In5Te12 exhibits the strongest powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensity at 2050 nm (0.61 eV) among tellurides to date, 9 x benchmark AgGaS2 in the range of 4674 mu m particle size. The primary studies reveal the 1.42 eV direct band gap and high absorption coefficient in the visible spectral region for CsCd4In5Te12, suggesting it is a new potential solar cell absorber material. In addition, CsMn4In5Te12 also displays a spin-canted antiferromagnetic property below 50 K.
