Abstract:DOI: 10.1002/adom.202100563 only suitable for the ultraviolet (UV)–visible (vis)–near-infrared (NIR) region such as KH2PO4 (KDP), LiB3O5, β-BaB2O4, and KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF). For midand farinfrared (>4 μm, MFIR) region, chalcogenides, halides, and phosphide have always been the most competitive candidates.[2] AgGaS2 (AGS), AgGaSe2, and ZnGeP2 are the only commercial materials available at present but still have some shortcomings including strong two-photon absorption, or low laser-induced damage thresholds (LDT).[3] There are great efforts under way to search for new IR NLO materials with superior performance. In view of molecular engineering, rational integration of different components will bring a greater improvement in performance for the material.[4] For example, halides possess relatively larger LDTs but smaller NLO efficiencies (dij) than chalcogenides. Thereby, exploring promising candidates, which can meet the double requirements at the same time of large NLO efficiencies and LDTs, may come true in chalcohalides system. Recent cases also bear out this speculation,[5] such as Ba3KGa5Se10Cl2, [Rb3Br][Ga3PS8], Li[LiCs2Cl][Ga3S6], [CsBa2Cl][Ga4S8], and [Ba4Cl2][ZnGa4S10]. However, these compounds are usually in the form of salt-inclusion chalcogenides, that is, all the halogen atoms just connect with the alkali or alkaline earth metals through ionic bonds. The NLO-active basic building units (BBUs) in these compounds are all chalcogenide [MQ4] (Q = S, Se) tetrahedra. In fact, it is more of an ideal situation that halogens X− (X = F, Cl, Br, I) partially substitute Q2− (Q = S, Se, Te) anions in classical NLO-active BBUs yield new mixed-anion ones, namely, [MQmXn] units. Benefiting from the higher electronegativity [F (χp = 3.98), Cl (χp = 3.16), and Br (χp = 2.96) vs S: (χp = 2.58), and Se: χp = 2.55)] and different size of anions, these mixed-anion BBUs will possess significantly enhanced dipole moment and anisotropy, which are favorable to yield strong NLO response and proper birefringence. Similar oxyfluoride units, such as [PO3F] and [BO3F], have been widely applied for high-performing crystals in UV region.[11] But in IR NLO materials field, the chalcohalides mixed-anion BBUs, to our knowledge, have not been studied up to now. Among the various IR NLO-active anionic groups, Hg-based BBUs are very competitive due to several advantages: 1) Hg2+ cation possesses highly polarizable and deformable electron cloud, which would significantly increase the second harmonic generation (SHG) effect and birefringence;[12] 2) multiple A series of nonlinear optical (NLO) chalcohalides AXHg3P2S8 (A = Rb, Cs; X = Cl, Br), which contain various Hg-based building units including mixed-anion trigonal planar [HgS2X] and tetrahedral [HgS3X], are successfully synthesized. These compounds display good water resistance, wide infrared transparent region (0.42–17 μm), high laser-induced damage thresholds (4.5–6 × AgGaS2), and strong phase-matchable second harmonic generation (SHG) response close to AgGaS2. The mixed-anion chalcohalide groups serving as functional building units in NLO materials are studied for the first time and proven to be very effective. This work opens a new avenue for new NLO material design to achieve the balance between strong SHG efficiency and large bandgap.
