Abstract:Substituted 3‐alkyloxycyclobutanones are highly valuable intermediates in organic synthesis, which demonstrate interesting and rich reactivity in different types of reactions due to the strain energy. Under Lewis acid catalysis, 3‐alkyloxycyclobutanones can form zwitterionic intermediates and participate in a series of cycloaddition reactions as three‐ or four‐carbon synthons. This Focus Review will mainly discuss formal [4+2], [3+2], and [3+3] annulations as well as other types of transformations with 3‐alkyloxycyclobutanones.

Abstract:A general synthesis of 4-hydroxylcarbazoles by domino vinylogous conjugate addition/cyclization/elimination/aromatization of easily prepared 3-nitroindoles with alkylidene azlactones under mild and transition-metal-free conditions has been developed. This method was also applicable to other nitrosubstituted benzofused heterocycles such as 3-nitrobenzothiophene, 2-nitrobenzothiophene, and 2-nitrobenzofuran. The valuable tetracyclic carbazole derivatives, such as 6H-oxazolo[4,5-c]carbazole and 3,6-dihydro-2H-oxazolo[4,5-c]carbazol-2-one, were readily prepared from the product, demonstrating synthetic utility of this method.

Abstract:The preparation of a new class of heterocycles is reported. Fusion of carborane carboxylic acids with alkynes leads to three-dimensional bora-analogues of isocoumarins. The procedure relies on an iridium-catalyzed alkenylation/annulation sequence between monocarba-closo-dodecaborate clusters and diarylacetylenes. Regioselective B−H activation, followed by B−C bond formation and ring closure, affords the fused cyclized products. More information can be found in the Communication by S. Abstract:An effective synthesis strategy for the preparation of 1'H-spiro[indene-1,2'-quinoxaline] has been developed. This involves a Rh(III)-catalyzed [3 + 2]-annulation of quinoxalines with alkynylcyclobutanols. The developed protocol offers a straightforward method for the preparation of versatile heterocyclic compounds with a four-membered ring and is compatible with a wide range of functional groups.

Abstract:A synthesis of the new heterocycles, 4-methyl-2H-pyrano[6,5-f] cycloalka[2,1-b]2H-chromen-2-ones (3) was described, via the unexpected intermediates 2-chloro-1-chloroethenylidenecycloalkanes (6) from the reaction of 1-ethynylcycloalkanols with thionyl chloride. The mechanism of some steps was discussed.
