Abstract:A small organic molecule phenylacetonitrile promoted chemoselective cyclization of (chromen-3-yl)alkynylnitriles to generate a novel tetracyclic or tricyclic chromone scaffold has been discovered. Importantly, the phenylacetonitrile serves as an anion transfer reagent changing the normal reaction of the substrate.

Abstract:Inspired by the chemistry and biology of chromone, a method for the construction of spirooxindole‐based tetrahydrocyclopenta[b]chromanones was reported with a regio‐, diastereo‐selectivity (all cases >20:1 dr) and moderate yields (up to 67%). This method constructs four contiguous stereogenic tertiary centers and one spiro quaternary center via a one‐step γ‐regioselective cascade [3+2] cycloaddition of oxindole‐chromone synthon with 3‐methyl‐4‐nitro‐5‐alkenyl‐isoxazole.

Abstract:Herein, we describe two types of C5 functionalization reactions of chromones with allyl alcohols. Diverse 5‐substituted chromones can be produced by modulating the catalysts in these reactions: Rh(III) results in the formation of 5‐alkylated chromones, and Ru(II) furnishes 5‐alkenylated products. We also achieve further functionalizations of these 5‐substituted chromones, which demonstrates the superiority of this method. Notable features of these new methods include readily available precursors, tunable reactivity, exclusive C5‐selectivity, and easy derivatization of products.
