Abstract:Polycrystalline and monocrystalline alpha-BiFeO3 crystals have been synthesized by solid state reaction and flux growth method, respectively. X-ray, neutron, and electron diffraction techniques are used to study the crystallographic and magnetic structure of alpha-BiFeO3. The present data show that alpha-BiFeO3 crystallizes in space group PI with a = 0.563 17(1) nm, b = 0.563 84(1) nm, c = 0.563 70(1) nm, alpha = 59.33(1)degrees, beta = 59.35(1)degrees, gamma = 59.38(1)degrees, and the magnetic structure of alpha-BiFeO3 can be described by space group PI with magnetic modulation vector in reciprocal space q = 0.0045a* - 0.0045b*, which is the magnetic structure model proposed by I. Sosnowska(1) applied to the new PI crystal symmetry of alpha-BiFeO3

Abstract:BiFeO3 thin films have been deposited on (111) SrTiO3 single crystal substrates by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy in an adsorption-controlled growth regime. This is achieved by supplying a bismuth overpressure and utilizing the differential vapor pressures between bismuth oxides and BiFeO3 to control stoichiometry. Four-circle x-ray diffraction reveals phase-pure, untwinned, epitaxial, (0001)-oriented films with rocking curve full width at half maximum values as narrow as 25 arc sec (0.007 degrees). Second harmonic generation polar plots combined with diffraction establish the crystallographic point group of these untwinned epitaxial films to be 3m at room temperature. Abstract:Bismuth ferrite powders were synthesized by a simple sol–gel method at the temperature as low as 450°C. Single phase BiFeO3 powders with a rhombohedral perovskite structure were fabricated after Bi–Fe gels were calcined at 450–650°C. Atomic ratio of Bi to Fe is approximately 1:1 for BiFeO3 powders, as determined by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. BiFeO3 powders show weak ferromagnetism at room temperature and strong size-dependent magnetic properties, which is different from the linear M–H relationship in BiFeO3 ceramics. Dielectric anomaly at round 330°C near the magnetic transition point corresponds to the antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition, indicating the coupling between polarization and magnetization in BiFeO3 powders. A reversible ferroelectric phase transformation of BiFeO3 powders has been detected at 827°C by a differential thermal analysis.

Abstract:We report our studies on the multiferroic orders in 0.5BiFeO(3)-0.5Bi(0.5)K-0.5TiO3 (0.5BF-0.5BT) in this paper. The XRD pattern in the powdered form suggests a pseudocubic phase on average, with a lattice parameter of similar to 3.9572 angstrom. However, the bulk sample shows a coexistence of pseudocubic and tetragonal phases. The dielectric anomaly is relaxor-like, with the Burns temperature (T-B) of similar to 760 K. The remnant polarization (P-r, 4.02-4.25 mu C/cm(2)) is nearly unchanged in the temperature range of 298 K and 398 K. In addition, the normalized strain coefficient (d x 33) increases on heating, from 100 pm/V at 298 K up to 240 pm/V at 453 K. On the other side, two anomalies were confirmed in the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibilities. The high-temperature anomaly is related to a transition between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic states around similar to 143 K. The low-temperature anomaly around similar to 5.5 K might hint the onset of the magnetic spin glass state. We believe that some common features should be present in (Bi(x)A(1-x)) (Fe0.5B0.5)O-3 (A cations are not ferroelectric active while B cations are not magnetic active).
Polar Order Evolutions Near the Rhombohedral to Pseudocubic and Tetragonal to Pseudocubic Phase Boundaries of the Bifeo3-Batio3 System

Abstract:Solid solutions of (1-x)BiFeO3-xBaTiO3 (BF-BT, 0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.98) were prepared and characterized. It was found that the dielectric constant εm, remnant polarization Pr and piezoelectric coefficient d33 reach their maximum values near the rhombohedral–pseudocubic phase boundary. In particular, the 0.7BF-0.3BT composition shows large polarization (Pr > 20 μC/cm2) and a temperature-stable piezoelectric property (d33 > 100 pC/N when the annealing temperature is lower than ~400 °C). Near the tetragonal–pseudocubic phase boundary, εm and Pr decrease, and the piezoelectric property vanishes when the BF content reaches 4 mol %.

Abstract:Bismuth ferrite powders were synthesized by a simple citric acid complexing co-precipitation method at much lower temperature of 600°C. The work studies the calcination temperature and molar ratio of Fe and Bi on the structure and morphology. The as-prepared BiFeO3 powder was characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer. The result shows that the phase pure BiFeO3 powders with cubic morphology were prepared as the calcination temperature was 600°C and molar ratio of Fe and Bi was 1:1. The nanoparticles was uniform with the size of about 200nm.

Abstract:The Ag/BiFeO3 composite thin films were prepared by sol–gel technology on ITO/glass substrate. Most of the Ag+ ions were reduced to form Ag nanoparticles in the thin film. Some Ag+ ions were doped into the BiFeO3 lattice to replace Bi, forming Ag doped BiFeO3. The average size of the Ag nanoparticles is 4–8 nm. The dielectric constant of the BiFeO3 thin film sintered at 550 °C with the molar ratio of Ag/Fe of 0.2 was enhanced to 139, which was nearly twice as high as that of pure BiFeO3. The dielectric loss kept at a low value of 0.15. The composite thin film also showed a typical ferromagnetism with the saturation magnetization of 2.2 emu/cm3. The Ag/BiFeO3 composite thin film showed typical ferromagnetism and high permittivity simultaneously.

Abstract:Multiferroic BiFeO3 was fabricated via a high pressure of 5 GPa at 900 °C. The crystal structure of the BiFeO3 ceramic was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to be a rhombohedral perovskite with a space group of R3c. The temperature dependence of XRDs was collected down to 5 K under ambient pressure that showed no structure phase transition. The structural evolution of BiFeO3 under high pressures up to 56.6 GPa was studied at room temperature using a diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron radiation XRD. A possible phase transition was proposed at around 10 GPa. The bulk modulus was estimated to be B 0=97.3(7) GPa in the low-pressure range.

Abstract:In this work, we have successfully synthesized pure-phase bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) particles through chemical co-precipitation route with composite precipitants. The TG-DSC suggests select 600 degrees C as calcination temperature. The X-ray diffraction pattern confirms the perovskite structure of BFO. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) image shows that the particle size of BFO lies between 100 and 150 nm. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra shows the band gap energy of the BFO samples is less than 2.2 eV. In addition, methyl orange was chosen as a dye water pollution to evaluate its degradation by as-synthesized BFO particles under visible light irradiation. The photocatalysis results reveal that the degradation efficiency of 97.06% to methyl orange occurred with BFO particles prepared with NH3 center dot H2O/NH4HCO3 equal to 1:1 under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:Studies of a BiFeO3 synthesis were performed to identify reasons for the appearance of secondary phases, the Bi25FeO39- and Bi2FeO9-type phases, in the reaction product. X-ray diffraction and microstructural analyses, performed on samples with different concentrations of impurities, showed that the impurities in the starting material crucially influence the phase composition of the reaction product. A fraction of the generated secondary phases strongly depends on the nature and concentration of the impurities. The experimental results can be explained by the theoretical consideration of ternary phase relations between Bi2O3, Fe2O3, and an impurity oxide. Single-phase polycrystalline BiFeO3 was synthesized from ultrapure starting oxides. To avoid using the expensive ultrapure oxides, techniques for reducing the fraction of the secondary phases in the reaction products were developed.

Abstract:Multiferroic ceramics were prepared and characterized in (1-x)BiFeO3-x(0.5CaTiO(3)-0.5SmFeO(3)) system by a standard solid-state reaction process. The structure evolution was investigated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrum analyses. The refinement results confirmed the different phase assemblages with varying amounts of polar rhombohedral R3c and nonpolar orthorhombic Pbnm as a function of the substitution content. In the compositions range of 0.2x0.5, polar R3c and nonpolar Pbnm coexisted, which was referred to polar-to-nonpolar morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). According to the dielectric and DSC analysis results, the ceramics with x0.2 changed to diffused ferroelectric, and the ferroelectric properties were enhanced significantly. Two dielectric relaxations were detected in the temperature range of 200-300 K and 500-700 K, respectively. The high-temperature dielectric relaxation was attributed to the grain-boundary effects. While the low temperature dielectric relaxation obtained in the samples with x=0.3-0.5 was related to the charge transfer between Fe2+ and Fe3+. The magnetic hysteresis loops measured at different temperature indicated the enhanced magnetic properties in the present ceramics, which could be attributed to the suppressed cycloidal spin magnetic structure by Ti ions. In addition, the rare-earth Sm spin moments might also affect the magnetic properties at relatively lower temperature.

Abstract:Multiferroic ceramics, (1-x) BiFeO3-xBa(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O-3 (BF-xBaFN), with x ranging from 0.1 to 0.6, were prepared by conventional mixed oxide method. X-ray diffraction analyses indicates a rhombohedral distorted perovskite structure (R3c space group) of BiFeO3 for x = 0.1 and cubic-like perovskite structure for x = 0.2-0.6. Significant magnetic enhancements were discovered in the BF-xBaFN ceramics. Ferromagnetic loops revealed the maximum remanent magnetization of 1.61 emu/g of BF-xBaFN with x =0.25. Abstract:Single-phase bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) powders were synthesized with a hydrothermal method by controlling the experimental conditions carefully. The powder structure, morphology and composition were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, Raman measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The particles change from irregular agglomerations to regular cubes with increasing KOH concentration. The large BiFeO3 cubic particles enjoy much smooth surfaces with well-matched element ratio (Bi:Fe:O=1:1:3) and chemical valence (Bi3+, Fe3+ and O2−). The high temperature XRD and differential scanning calorimetry show that BiFeO3 powders have a hexagonal perovskite structure with a space group R3c below 370°C and a rhombohedral structure with a space group R3m below 755°C. BiFeO3 undergoes a phase transition in the temperature range of 755–817°C from rhombohedral structure to a cubic phase, then decomposes to liquid and Fe2O3 above 939°C.

Abstract:The solid solution of (1-x)BiFeO3-xDyFeO3 was prepared by solidstate reactions in the form of ceramics. The effects of chemicalmodification by means of aliovalent ionic substitution of Ti4+ forFe3+ on the structure and dielectric properties were investigated. Amorphotropic phase boundary bridging the perovskite rhombohedral phase andthe orthoferrite orthorhombic phase was identified at x around 0.1. Thechemical modification was found to stabilize the perovsite phase. Thedielectric performance of the solid solution was improved by thesubstitution of Ti4+ for Fe3+, which decreased the electricconductivity by reducing oxygen vacancies, as evidenced by the decrease inloss tangent values. Magnetic hysteresis and large saturated magnetization(0.5 μB/f.u.) were realized in 0.92BiFeO3-0.08DyFeO3with 2% substitution of Ti4+ for Fe3+, which is believed toarise from the disruption of the spiral spin modulation after structuralmodification, and the interaction between the spins of the Dy3+ andFe3+ at low temperatures which decouples the antiferromagnetic orderbetween the Fe3+ ions.

Abstract:The stable phase structure of BiFeO3 films on LaAlO3 substrate was studied. In the biaxial constrained case, it changes from a tetragonal phase to a rhombohedral one with the increase of film thickness. By reducing the degree of the constrain from the biaxial case to the uniaxial one, the film relaxes in a much smaller thickness to a rhombohedral phase and an enhanced piezoelectric response is predicted in comparison to that of biaxial constrained case.

Abstract:${\text{BiFeO}}_{3}$ and ${\text{Bi}}_{2}{\text{FeMnO}}_{6}$ films were epitaxially grown on ${\text{SrTiO}}_{3}$ (001) substrates by pulsed-laser deposition, and their structural, magnetic, magneto-optical and optical properties were measured. In ${\text{Bi}}_{2}{\text{FeMnO}}_{6}$, Fe is mainly present in the $3+$ valence state, while Mn shows multivalence states. ${\text{Bi}}_{2}{\text{FeMnO}}_{6}$ exhibits low magnetization at room temperature and at 5 K indicating there is no significant $B$-site ordering. The ${\text{BiFeO}}_{3}$ film shows high optical transparency, while ${\text{Bi}}_{2}{\text{FeMnO}}_{6}$ shows high absorption loss in the infrared. Density-functional theory modeling of ${\text{BiFeO}}_{3}$, ${\text{BiMnO}}_{3}$ and ${\text{Bi}}_{2}{\text{FeMnO}}_{6}$ was carried out by applying the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and $\text{GGA}+U$ methods. The formation enthalpy of ordered ${\text{Bi}}_{2}{\text{FeMnO}}_{6}$ is positive for several crystal symmetries and for ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin structures at 0 K temperature, indicating $B$-site ordering is not favored. The electronic structure calculations are consistent with the electronic and optical properties of these films.
Preparation of Bifeo(3) Nanopowders Using Acetylacetone As Stabilizer

Abstract:The present investigation reports on the preparation of BiFeO3 nanopowders by a sol-gel method using acetylacetone as a stabilizer. Single-phase BiFeO3 nanopowders without any impurity or amorphous phases were obtained when the precursor was thermal treated at temperatures as low as 400 oC for 2 h. Acetylacetone (acac) plays an important role on lowering the formation temperature of pure phase BiFeO3 nanopowders. It is found that Bi/acac molar ratio of 1/30 was favorable for a stable sol and for the lowest crystallization temperature of pure BiFeO3 nanopowders. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that thermally induced crystallization process of BiFeO3 nanopowders from Bi-Fe polymeric precursor. When the thermal treated temperature was below 200 oC, only amorphous phase existed. With the temperature increasing up to 300 oC, crystallized phase, carbonate, were detected. After annealed at 400 oC, Bi-Fe precursor totally changed to rhombohedral BiFeO3 nanopowders. Scanning electron microscopy characterized morphologies of BiFeO3 nanopowders calcined at 400 oC and 500 oC. The ferroelectric transition of BiFeO3 nanopowders at 827 oC has been detected by differential thermal analysis.

Abstract:The compounds Bi5FeTi3O15 (BFTO) and Bi5Fe0.5Co0.5Ti3O15 (BFCT) were prepared by incorporating BiFeO3(BFO) and BiFe0.5Co0.5O3 (BFCO) into the host Bi4Ti3O12 using the solid state reaction technique. The X-ray diffraction and Raman shift data indicate that the as-prepared materials are of the four-layer Aurivillius phases. At room temperature, the half substitution of Fe-O layer by Co-O layer is found to result in the increase in the 2P(r) by about 35% and simultaneously the decrease in 2E(c) by about 41%, respectively. The magnetic moment at least tripled its value by substituting half Fe ions by Co ions. The remnant magnetization (2M(r)) and the coercive field (2H(c)) were about 7.8 memu/g and 410 Oe, respectively.

Abstract:High-resolution x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to study BiFeO3 thin films grown on the bare and SrRuO3 buffered (001) SrTiO3 substrates. Reciprocal space mapping (RSM) around (002) and (103) reflections revealed that BFO films with a thickness of about 200 nm were almost fully relaxed and had a rhombohedral structure. Cross-sectional, high-resolution TEM showed that the films started to relax at a very early stage of growth, which was consistent with the RSM results. A thin intermediate layer of about 2 nm was observed at the interface, which had a smaller lattice than the overgrown film. Twist distortions about the c axis to release the shear strain introduced by the growth of rhombic (001) BiFeO3 on cubic (001) SrTiO3 were also observed. The results indicate that a strained, coherent BiFeO3 film on (001) SrTiO3 is very difficult to maintain and (111) STO substrates are preferable.
