Abstract:A practical, Pd(0)/Pd(II)-catalyzed reaction was developed for phenol-directed C-H activation/C-O cyclization using air as an oxidant. The turnover-limiting step of the process was found to be C-O reductive elimination instead of C-H activation. This reaction can tolerate a variety of functional groups and is complementary to the previous methods for the synthesis of substituted dibenzofurans.

Abstract:A general and efficient synthesis of indeno[1,2]furans via a Pd-catalyzed bicyclization reaction between 2-alkynyliodobenzenes and propargylic alcohols is described. The procedure furnishes indeno[1,2]furans with moderate to excellent yields (51%-78%) and a broad substrate scope. The cascade process combines the formation of one C-O bond and two C-C bonds in a single step.

Abstract:Although various methods for the preparation of dibenzofurans are available, an efficient, general synthesis of dibenzofurans from benzofurans remains an unsolved problem. Herein, we provide the first benzannulation of readily prepared 2‐nitrobenzofurans with alkylidene malononitriles. This methodology enables facile assembly of a wide variety of highly functionalized dibenzofurans in moderate to excellent yields under metal‐free conditions. Gram‐scale synthesis and further elaborations of the product were succesfully performed, demonstrating synthetic utility of this method.

Abstract:Metal-catalyzed cross-couplings provide powerful, concise, and accurate methods to construct carbon-carbon bonds from organohalides and organometallic reagents. Recent developments extended cross-couplings to reactions where one of the two partners connects with an aryl or alkyl carbon-hydrogen bond. From an economic and environmental point of view, oxidative couplings between two carbon-hydrogen bonds would be ideal. Oxidative coupling between phenyl and "inert" alkyl carbon-hydrogen bonds still awaits realization. It is very difficult to develop successful strategies for oxidative coupling of two carbon-hydrogen bonds owning different chemical properties. This article provides a solution to this challenge in a convenient preparation of dihydrobenzofurans from substituted phenyl alkyl ethers. For the phenyl carbon-hydrogen bond activation, our choice falls on the carboxylic acid fragment to form the palladacycle as a key intermediate. Through careful manipulation of an additional ligand, the second "inert" alkyl carbon-hydrogen bond activation takes place to facilitate the formation of structurally diversified dihydrobenzofurans.Cross-dehydrogenative coupling is finding increasing application in synthesis, but coupling two chemically distinct sites remains a challenge. Here, the authors report an oxidative coupling between sp 2 and sp 3 carbons by sequentially activating the more active aryl site followed by the alkyl position.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed domino cyclization/cycloisomerization reaction of alkyne-tethered carbamoyl chlorides with (E)-β-chloroenones is reported. This reaction proceeds via a syn-carbopalladation of the alkyne, followed by a vinyl-PdII-catalyzed cycloisomerization of the (E)-β-chloroenone cascade, which provides an efficient method to synthesize furan-linked methylene oxindoles. The reaction features stereodefined vinyl-PdII species, high to excellent 5-exo/6-endo selectivity, excellent Z/E selectivity, and the sequential formation of three bonds and bis-heterocycles. The strategy for the synthesis of furan-containing benzofurans has also been demonstrated.

Abstract:A new palladium-catalyzed method for the synthesis of benzofurans by reaction of 2-hydroxystyrenes and iodobenzenes via a C-H activation/oxidation tandem reaction has been unprecedentedly discovered. By using this strategy, the overall synthetic efficiency of the synthesis of decursivine and its analogues was indeed improved. Preliminary mechanistic studies shed light into the possible mechanisms.

Abstract:This review reports recent accesses to the dibenzofuran nucleus described in the literature since 2008. This article starts with synthesizing dibenzofurans by creating the CO bond of the furan ring. In the following section, we evoke the formation of dibenzofurans by cyclizing diarylether derivatives. The last part of this update concerns the construction of dibenzofurans from benzofuran or phenol derivatives. Representative examples showing the scope of these processes illustrate new approaches and biological activities of dibenzofurans. Reaction mechanisms explaining certain dibenzofuran formation processes are described, as suggested by their authors.
