Abstract:A Lewis-acid-promoted approach to the synthesis of highly functionalized dihydrobenzofuran derivatives was developed. A diverse range of functional groups are tolerated in this type of reaction. The reaction mechanism investigation indicates that the highly reactive phenyl cation intermediate is probably involved in this process. The chirality of substrate is retained under the reaction conditions.

Abstract:A highly regio- and stereoselctive palladium-catalyzed domino reaction of functionalized aryl allyl ethers has been developed. Various aryl allyl ethers derived from the phosphine-catalyzed addition of electron-deficient allenes with phenol are found to be efficient substrates for the synthesis of 2-substituted 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans and indolines. It is the first example of aryl allyl ether used as an ideal and practical precursor of hard to get functionalized 1,3-butadiene for the heterocyclic compound synthesis.

Abstract:A tetrakis(acetonitrile)copper(I) hexafluorophosphate [Cu(MeCN)PF6]‐catalyzed dehydrative reaction of 1‐(2‐hydroxyphenyl)propargyl alcohols with diarylphosphine oxides has been developed to provide an efficient synthesis of phosphorylated benzofurans in good to high yields. In the presence of a catalytic amount of an organic base, a variety of H‐phosphonates and H‐phosphinates can also be employed as good substrates to produce the corresponding products in moderate yields. The reaction has significant economical and ecological advantages since the formation of a new C(sp3)–P bond and the benzofuran framework could both be achieved using an inexpensive copper catalyst with water produced as the sole by‐product. Some synthetic transformations of the product have also been demonstrated.

Abstract:As an interim paradigm for the catalysts between those based on more conventional mononuclear molecular Pd complexes and Pdn nanoparticles widely used in organic synthesis, polynuclear palladium clusters have attracted great attention for their unique reactivity and electronic properties. However, the development of Pd cluster catalysts for organic transformations and mechanistic investigations is still largely unexploited. Herein, we disclose the use of trinuclear palladium (Pd3Cl) species as an active catalyst for the direct C-H α-arylation of benzo[b]furans with aryl iodides to afford 2-arylbenzofurans in good yields under mild conditions. With this method, broad substrate adaptability was observed, and several drug intermediates were synthesized in high yields. Mechanistic studies indicated that the Pd3 core most likely remained intact throughout the reaction course.

Abstract:A variety of 2-aroyl(acyl, or carboxyl)-3-vinyl benzo[b]furans have been prepared via C–C bond formationin good to excellent yields by Pd/C-catalyzed cyclization/isomerization of propargylic compounds. Thereaction proceeded with easily accessible starting materials and inexpensive catalyst under mild condi-tions. Furthermore, a number of benzo[b]furan derivatives including an allene functional group have beenprepared too.

Abstract:The mechanism of palladium‐catalyzed bicyclization of 2‐alkynylhalobenzenes and propargylic alcohols for the formation of indeno[1,2]furans has been studied computationally with the aid of density functional theory (DFT). Full free energy profiles are computed for different reaction equations between different reaction substrates. The calculation results showed that the catalytic cycle is found to contain six steps, oxidative addition, ligand substitution, first C ≡ C triple bond insertion, rearrangement, second C ≡ C triple bond insertion and reductive elimination, with the reductive elimination being the rate‐determining step for the different reaction equations (1), (2) and (3). Our calculations are consistent with experimental observations. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:A photoinduced palladium‐catalyzed ring‐opening hydroarylation of furans to form functionalized indenes was achieved via an intramolecular reductive coupling of aryl bromide with furan using silane as the reductant. Deuterium tracking and DFT analysis revealed a reasonable reaction pathway involving: 1) the homolytic cleavage of the furan C−O bond induced by the α‐allyl radical; 2) a 1,6‐H atom transfer from carbon to oxygen.

Abstract:By using PhSO2CF2H as the difluoromethylidene equivalent, a novel method for connecting aromatic aldehydes and arylboronic acids via consecutive reactions was developed to obtain structurally diverse 2,2-diaryl-1,1-difluoroethenes. The key step is the palladium-catalyzed dehydrosulfonylative cross-coupling of tosylates that are prepared from PhSO2CF2H, aromatic aldehydes and tosyl chloride. Mechanistic investigations showed that the reaction proceeds mainly through base-mediated dehydrosulfonylation followed by palladium-catalyzed C(sp2)-C(sp2) cross-coupling reaction.

Abstract:2-(Methylthio)-1,4-diaryl-2-butene-1,4-dione (3) are prepared from readily available aryl methyl ketones in the presence of copper(II) oxide, iodine, and dimethyl sulfoxide. The success of the cross-coupling reaction of 4-chloroacetophenone with 2-acetylthiophene confirms a proposed self-sorting tandem reaction mechanism. Both Z- and E-isomers of compound 3 are readily converted into the corresponding 3-methylthio 2,5-diaryl furan 7 in good yield through a domino process involving the reduction of the double bond followed by the Paal-Knorr furan synthesis. Meanwhile, 4-bromo-3-methylthio 2,5-diaryl furan 10 is obtained either by the treatment of furan 7 with molecular bromine or by the treatment of diketone 3 with 30% hydrogen bromide in acetic acid solution in one pot. Removal of the methylthio group is accomplished by the treatment of 7 with Raney Ni in ethanol, which affords the diaryl-substituted furan 11 in excellent isolated yield. Selective reduction of the double bond of compound 3 leads to the formation of the saturated 1,4-diketone 13, which is easily converted to the corresponding 3-methylthio-2,5-diaryl-substituted pyrrole 14 and thiophene 15 via the Paal-Knorr cyclization reaction.
