Abstract:ZnO nanostructures were fabricated on glass substrate through a convenient deposition process. Firstly, ZnO seed layers were deposited on glass substrates through sol–gel method. Secondly, the ZnO nanostructures were then grown in a Teflon-lined stainless steel autoclave by immersing the seed layers into aqueous solution containing zinc nitrate hexahydrate and ammonia. The microstructures, morphologies, photoluminescence spectra and hydrophobicity of the nanostructures were analyzed by X-ray diffraction spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy, laser micro-Raman spectrometer and contact angle apparatus, respectively. It can be seen that ZnO nanostructures display different surface morphologies such as ZnO nanorods parallel to the substrate surface, like-pencil ZnO nanorods and bending ZnO nanorods by altering the PH value. The largest intensity ratio of the UV/visible emission and the superhydrophobic surfaces (CA = 156°) with high adhesion can be achieved in the sample grown in the solutions with the PH value of 11.2. The high adhesion may be attributed to the strong capillary force and the ZnO nanostructures with petal effect can be explained by Wenzel model.

Abstract:Grid-structured ZnO microsphere arrays assembled by uniform ZnO nanorods were fabricated by noncatalytic chemical vapor deposition, taking advantage of morphologies of alumina nanowire pyramid substrates and ZnO oriented growth habits. Every ZnO microsphere (similar to the micropapilla on a lotus leaf surface) is assembled by over 200 various oriented ZnO nanorods (similar to the hairlike nanostructures on mircopapilla of a lotus leaf). This lotus-leaf-like ZnO micro-nanostructure films reveal superhydrophobicity and ultrastrong adhesive force to liquid. The realization of this hierarchical ZnO nanostructure film could be important for further understanding wettability of biological surfaces with micro-nanostructure and application in microfluidic devices.

Abstract:Three-dimensional hierarchical ZnO films with lotus-leaf-like micro/nano structures were successfully fabricated via a biomimetic route combining sol-gel technique, soft lithography and hydrothermal treatments. PDMS mold replicated from a fresh lotus leaf was used to imprint microscale pillar structures directly into a ZnO sol film. Hierarchical ZnO micro/nano structures were subsequently fabricated by a low-temperature hydrothermal growth of secondary ZnO nanorod arrays on the micro-structured ZnO film. The morphology and size of ZnO hierarchical micro/nano structures can be easily controlled by adjusting the hydrothermal reaction time. Wettability of hierarchical ZnO thin films was found to convert from superhydrophilicity to hydrophobicity after a low-surface-energy fluoroalkylsilane modification. Improved wetting properties from hydrophobic to superhydrophobic can be tuned by increasing the growth of ZnO nanorods structures.

Abstract:This paper reports that the film composed of flower-like ZnO micro-spheres, which consists of nano-sheets, is fabricated by chemical bath deposition. By adding hydrogen fluoride (HF) into the reaction solution, which contains zinc nitrate hexahydrate and hexamethylenetetramine, the ZnO crystal growth process is changed and the film composed by ZnO micro-spheres is obtained after keeping the reaction solution at 95 degrees C for 2 h. The morphology, crystal phase and wettability of the sample are characterized by scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffraction and contact angle meter, respectively. The results show that the film has the micro-nano compound structure. After modification with heptadecauorodecyltrimethoxy-silane, the wettability of the film changed from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity, on which water contact angle and the sliding angle are 154 degrees and less than 5 degrees for 8-mu L water droplet, respectively. Additionally, the formation mechanism of the ZnO micro-sphere is also discussed.

Abstract:A lotus leaf exhibits excellent superhydrophobic properties because of its hierarchical microstructure and a waxy hydrophobic material covering its surface. Herein, the lotus leaf was used as a template and a copper surface layer with a microstructure similar to the lotus leaf was prepared by electroplating. Experimental results show that the plating samples saved micron-sized structure of the lotus leaf, such as papillae. At the same time, owing to the specificity of the electroplating method, smaller grains were formed as the second-level structure on the papillae, forming a hierarchical structure that makes it possible to obtain a superhydrophobic surface. The plated copper surface exhibited excellent hydrophobic properties with a contact angle of 160 degrees, which is higher than that of the lotus leaf (157 degrees) and also much higher than that of smooth copper covered with an identical fluroalkyl silane (112 degrees). This affords a novel idea for preparing of superhydrophobic surfaces.

Abstract:ZnO micro/nano complex structure films, including reticulate papillary nodes, petal-like and flake-hole, have been self-assembled by a hydrothermal technique at different temperatures without metal catalysts. The wettability of the above film surfaces was modified with a simple coating of heptadecafluorodecyltrimethoxy-silane in toluene. After modifying, the surface of ZnO film grown at 50 °C was converted from superhydrophilic with a water contact angle lower than 5° to superhydrophobic with a water contact angle of 165°. Additionally, the surface of reticulate papillary nodes ZnO film grown at 100 °C had excellent superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle of 173° and a sliding angle lower than 2°. Furthermore, the water contact angle on the surface of petal-like and flake-hole ZnO films grown at 150 °C and 200 °C were found to be 140° and 120°, respectively. The wettability for the samples was found to depend strongly on the surface morphology which results from the growth temperature.

Abstract:A facile inexpensive route has been developed to prepare ZnO hierarchical materials with microplate/nanohole structures based on the colloidal monolayer template by the precursor thermal decomposition. These hierarchical structured materials demonstrated an excellent superhydrophobicity with self-cleaning effect and an enhanced photocatalytic performance to organic molecules, which are attributed to big roughness and large surface area of such special hierarchical structures. The formation mechanism of such hierarchical structures was investigated in detail by tracing morphology changing at different precursor concentrations. At high precursor concentration, both incompletely restricted ZnO growth of colloidal templates and preferable growth of microplates take place at the same time, and hence, ZnO hierarchical materials with microplate/nanohole structures are formed. With increasing precursor concentration, the number density of ZnO microplates tends to be larger. The large number density of ZnO microplates and holes on the microplates render the sample a large surface area and surface roughness, leading to good superhydrophobicity and photocatalytic activity. Such hierarchical ZnO micro/nanostructured materials have important applications in environmental science, microfluidic devices, etc.

Abstract:A novel ZnS hierarchical structure composed of nanorod arrays with branched nanosheets and nanowires grown on their upside walls, was synthesized over Au-coated silicon substrate via chemical vapor deposition technique. Contact angle and sliding angle of this hierarchical film with no surface modification were measured to be about 153.8 degrees and 9.1 degrees for 5 mu l water droplets. Self-cleaning behavior and dynamic water-repelling performance were clearly demonstrated. In addition, electrowetting transition phenomenon from superhydrophobic to hydrophilic state happened when a critical bias similar to 7.0 V was applied. Below this threshold voltage, the contact angle change is little. This work for the first time reports the creation of ZnS superhydrophobic surface and could enrich its research field as surface functional materials. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The flower‐like ZnO with micro‐nano hierarchical structure is successfully obtained by a simple hydrothermal synthesis, using sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as a structure direct agent. The resulted ZnO micro‐flowers are very uniform in morphology with particle sizes around 1 µm. A number of techniques, including X‐ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scan electron microscopy (FESEM), energy‐dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), are used to characterize the obtained ZnO. The self‐assemble of ZnO nano‐sheets under the direction of SDBS leads to the formation of ZnO micro‐flowers. The room temperature photoluminescence property of the obtained flower‐like ZnO exhibits a broad visible light emission. The surface of as‐made ZnO shows a very hydrophilic property, while the special micro‐nano hierarchical structure enables the ZnO micro‐flower a superhydrophobic surface after modification of fluoroalkylsilane.
From Superhydrophilic to Superhydrophobic: Controlling Wettability of Hydroxide Zinc Carbonate Film on Zinc Plates.

Abstract:Hydroxide zinc carbonate (HZC) films with different morphologies were deposited on zinc plates through a convenient chemical-bath deposition (CBD) process using urea solution. By altering deposition conditions, the structure of HZC crystals could be tuned from vertically aligned nanosheets to flowerlike microstructures. The upright-standing HZC nanosheets were developed from interconnected nanorods growing up on the zinc plates in aqueous urea solution and led to superhydrophilic properties because of the hydrophilic upside edges consisting of hydroxyl groups and large distance. In contrast, flowerlike microstructures formed in N,N-dimethylformamide-water solution and the exposed hydrophobic crystal planes resulted in superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle as high as 155.2 degrees. The final surface wettabilities could be ascribed to both the atomic composition and hydrophilicity of HZC crystal planes exposed to the water-solid interface. All the surfaces with specific wettabilities can be one-step fabricated without subsequent modification, and tunable wetting properties can provide zinc substrates extending applications.

Abstract:The ZnO nanostructures were synthesized on Si(100) substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Different Morphologies of ZnO nanostructures, such as nanoparticle film, micropillar and micro-nano multi-structure, were obtained with different conditions. The results of XRD and TEM showed the good quality of ZnO crystal growth. Selected area electron diffraction analysis indicates the individual nano-wire is single crystal. The wettability of ZnO was studied by contact angle admeasuring apparatus. We found that the wettability can be changed from hydrophobic to super-hydrophobic when the structure changed from smooth particle film to single micro-pillar, nano-wire and micro-nano multi-scale structure. Compared with the particle film with contact angle (CA) of 90.7 degrees, the CA of single scale microstructure and sparse micro-nano multi-scale structure is 130-140 degrees, 140-150 degrees respectively. But when the surface is dense micro-nano multi-scale structure such as nano-lawn, the CA can reach to 168.2 degrees. The results indicate that microstructure of surface is very important to the surface wettability. The wettability on the micro-nano multi-structure is better than single-scale structure, and that of dense micro-nano multi-structure is better than sparse multi-structure.

A hydrothermal process of zinc oxide (ZnO), which was suitable for both planar surfaces and non-planar surfaces, was proposed to obtain nanopillars in this work. The effects of process parameters including the growth time and solution concentration on the morphological properties of ZnO nanorods were investigated by experiments. After process optimization, the ZnO arrays were well patterned in large area with vertically aligned orientation. This developed process of ZnO was then introduced to combine with other techniques to obtain various hierarchical structures on different substrates. Furthermore, the superhydrophobicity and self-cleaning effect were respectively verified on the plexiglass tube with ZnO nanopillars and the tin-bronze surface with hierarchical architectures.

Abstract:Large-area ZnO nanorod arrays were synthesized successfully on the stainless steel mesh through chemical vapor deposition route. The coated mesh shows good water permeability after ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, while it is impermeable to water after dark storage. This repeatable process suggests that the wettability transition of the rough surface is complete reversible. Besides, the special hierarchical nanostructures and the suitable size of the original mesh play an important role in smart controllability of the water permeability. The reversible transition of surface wettability has potential applications in many aspects, such as microchips, micro-fluidic devices, and biotechnology.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures present great potential for application in optical, sensing, and piezoelectric devices owing to their nanometric diameter and large specific surface area. To obtain well-designed and well-constructed ZnO micro/nano-architecture via a facile and inexpensive procedure is still a major challenge. Here, a sonochemical method was proposed for the synthesis of hierarchical flower-likepolystyrene-ZnOmicro/nano-particles (HFPs). Abundant thermal energy for the aqueous hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods (NRs) and sufficient ultrasonic irradiation to maintain the homogeneous dispersion of the produced particles were supplied by the sonochemical process. Moreover, the effects of precursor concentration, reaction time, and molar ratio of Zn(NO3)2 to hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) on the synthesis of hierarchical flower-likeparticles were investigated. The mechanism of the hierarchical flower-like particle formation was presented, and the best morphology was obtained at a concentration of 25mM Zn(NO3)2 and 25mM HMT with a reaction time of 2h. Finally, the potential of using HFPs as superhydrophilic or superhydrophobic coating was investigated to tailor the wettability of a surface.

Abstract:A superhydrophobic ZnO thin film was fabricated by the Au-catalyzed chemical vapor deposition method. The surface of the film exhibits hierarchical structure with nanostructures on sub-microstructures. The water contact angle (CA) was 164.3°, turning into a superhydrophilic one (CA < 5°) after UV illumination, which can be recovered through being placed in the dark or being heated. The film was attached tightly to the substrate, showing good stability and durability. The surface structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

Abstract:Layered zinc hydroxyl acetate (LZHA) nanosheet-assembled honeycomb-like and flower-like structures were synthesized by a chemical bath deposition method using aqueous zinc acetate solution as the bath solution and a porous ZnO coating as the substrate. The morphology of LZHA architectures growing on the surface of the substrate depends on the type of LZHA nucleation. The homogeneous nucleation facilitates the adsorption of crumpled LZHA nanosheets generated in the solution onto the substrate surface, whereas heterogeneous nucleation promotes the formation of flat LZHA nanosheets on the substrate surface. The crumpled and flat LZHA nanosheets serving as the seeds undergo cyclic "growth-division" processes to evolve into LZHA nanosheet-assembled honeycomb-like and flower-like structures, respectively. The hierarchical architecture features of the LZHA honeycombs and flowers can be topologically inherited without any crack and collapse when converted into ZnO by calcination. The LZHA honeycomb-like and Ag nanoparticle modified ZnO flower-like structures were characterized by a scanning electron microscope, field-emission scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer and X-ray diffractometer. The synthesized ZnO honeycomb-like and flower-like structures show excellent hydrophobic properties owning to the appropriate roughness provided by the hierarchical structures. In particular, the surface assembled by ZnO honeycombs derived from their LZHA precursors with deposition time of 4 h shows a higher water contact angle of 162.3°. In addition, the Ag nanoparticle modification on the petals of ZnO flowers results in the formation of multi-scale rough surfaces, and thus increases the water contact angle. The synthesized superhydrophobic surfaces exhibit promising applications in fields such as anti-icing, anti-corrosion and reducing fluidic drag.
