Abstract:Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidation of terminal olefins to methyl ketones has emerged as an attractive strategy for organic synthesis. Here we report the Pd(II)-catalyzed selective oxidation of olefins using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant and 2-(1H-indazol-1-yl)quinoline as the ligand. A wide range of olefins were well tolerated in this reaction system to provide methyl ketones, whereas the presence of Ac2O initiated the oxo-acyloxylation to afford the α-acetoxyacetone products. Isotope labeling studies and active-intermediate-capture experiments were performed to elucidate the underlying selective reaction mechanism. Notably, the generation of α-acetoxyacetone products involves the palladium enolate intermediate while the methyl ketone products were generated through the most commonly proposed alkylperoxide intermediates, followed by 1,2-hydride migration.

Abstract:The enantioselective Pd-catalyzed redox-relay Heck arylation of acyclic alkenyl alcohols allows access to various useful chiral building blocks from simple olefinic substrates. Mechanistically, after the initial migratory insertion, a succession of β-hydride elimination and migratory insertion steps yields a saturated carbonyl product instead of the more general Heck product, an unsaturated alcohol. Here, we investigate the reaction mechanism, including the relay function, yielding the final carbonyl group transformation. M06 calculations predict a ΔΔG(‡) of 1 kcal/mol for the site selectivity and 2.5 kcal/mol for the enantioselectivity, in quantitative agreement with experimental results. The site selectivity is controlled by a remote electronic effect, where the developing polarization of the alkene in the migratory insertion transition state is stabilized by the C-O dipole of the alcohol moiety. The enantioselectivity is controlled by steric repulsion between the oxazoline substituent and the alcohol-bearing alkene substituent. The relay efficiency is due to an unusually smooth potential energy surface without high barriers, where the hydroxyalkyl-palladium species acts as a thermodynamic sink, driving the reaction toward the carbonyl product. Computational predictions of the relative reactivity and selectivity of the double bond isomers are validated experimentally.

Abstract:Heck reactions of bromoarenes with various olefins catalyzed by 2-iminopyridylpalladium (II) have been investigated. The scope of a coupling reaction has been tested in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone at 140 degrees C using K2CO3 as base. Using 0.1% molar ratio of palladium catalysts, aryl bromides were converted into 1,2-substitutedethene products in good to high yields through coupling with both vinylarenes and alkylolefins. With butyl vinyl ether, an electron-rich olefin, however, the effective coupling reaction produced a mixture of two regio-isomers, 1,2- and 1,1-substitutedethenes. Abstract:Organically derivatised polyoxometalate (POM) clusters containing bromo or iodo groups can undergo ligand-free, Pd-catalysed Heck carbon-carbon coupling reactions with alkenes, with bromomagnesium phenylamide as a base (see scheme). This protocol offers a new route to organic-inorganic hybrid molecular materials in which POM clusters are covalently bonded with organic conjugated segments.

Abstract:The development of organometallic single-site catalysts (SSCs) has inspired the designs of new heterogeneous catalysts with high efficiency. Nevertheless, the application of SSCs in certain modern organic reactions, such as C–C bond formation reactions, has still been less investigated. In this study, a single-site Pd(II) catalyst was developed, where 2,2′-bipyridine-grafted periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) was employed as the support of a Pd(II) complex. The overall performance of the single-site Pd(II) catalyst in the oxidative Heck reaction was then investigated. The investigation results show that the catalyst displays over 99% selectivity for the product formation with high reaction yield. Kinetic profiles further confirm its high catalytic efficiency, showing that the rate constant is nearly 40 times higher than that for the free Pd(II) salt. X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that the catalyst has remarkable lifetime and recyclability.

Abstract:The palladium-catalyzed intermolecular Heck type reaction of both cyclic and acyclic epoxides is reported with tolerance of typical polar groups and acidic protons. Suitable alkenes include styrenes, conjugate dienes, and some electron-deficient olefins. In reactions of aliphatic terminal epoxides, ring opening occurs selectively at terminal positions, and stereocenters of epoxides are fully retained. Mechanistic studies provide evidence for in situ conversion of epoxides to beta-halohydrins, generation of alkyl radicals, and radical addition to alkenes as key steps. Cyclovoltammetric de,termination of reduction potentials suggests that during activation of alkyl iodides by palladium(0) complexes, inner-sphere halogen abstraction is more likely than outer-sphere single electron transfer.

Abstract:Pd-based nanocatalysts were prepared through immobilization of Pd(OAc) 2 /phenanthroline on nanocarbon materials and subsequent pyrolysis. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron microscopy (TEM). Pd-based nanocatalysts can efficiently catalyze the oxidative Heck reaction of tetrafluoropropylene by using H 2 O 2 as a green oxidant and generate (Z)-β-fluoro-β-(trifluoromethyl)styrenes in excellent yield. The yield and Z/E selectivity of the titled reaction remained higher than 90% after four reaction cycles. Graphic Abstract

Abstract:Controlling the selectivity of reactions of palladium catalysts with various substrates is challenging. Herein, a general and unprecedented Pd-catalysed four-component inter-molecular Heck alkynylcarbonylation involving haloalkynes, alkenes, carbon monoxide (CO) and alcohols based on a molecular queuing strategy is presented. This efficient methodology proceeds via overall multiple Csp–Csp3 bond and C–O bond formations and provides a divergent approach for the efficient and selective construction of multi-substituted β,γ-alkynoates under mild reaction conditions. Experimental and density functional theory calculation results demonstrate that high selectivity olefin insertion followed by CO insertion are crucial catalytic steps.

Abstract:Silica-supported palladium (0) complexes have been prepared from γ-chloropropyl triethoxysilica and γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilica via immobilization on fumed silica, followed by reacting with ethylenediamine and salicylaldehyde, and then the reaction with palladium chloride in ethanol and reduction with KBH 4 in ethanol. They are efficient catalysts for Heck reaction of aryl iodides with alkene at 90 o C. These polymeric palladium (0) catalysts can be recovered and reused without loss in activity.
