Abstract:Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidation of terminal olefins to methyl ketones has emerged as an attractive strategy for organic synthesis. Here we report the Pd(II)-catalyzed selective oxidation of olefins using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant and 2-(1H-indazol-1-yl)quinoline as the ligand. A wide range of olefins were well tolerated in this reaction system to provide methyl ketones, whereas the presence of Ac2O initiated the oxo-acyloxylation to afford the α-acetoxyacetone products. Isotope labeling studies and active-intermediate-capture experiments were performed to elucidate the underlying selective reaction mechanism. Notably, the generation of α-acetoxyacetone products involves the palladium enolate intermediate while the methyl ketone products were generated through the most commonly proposed alkylperoxide intermediates, followed by 1,2-hydride migration.

Abstract:A ligand-free Pd-catalyzed highly selective oxidative Heck reaction of organoboronic acids with allyl esters was developed. Beta-H elimination is highly chemoselectively controlled, leading to gamma-substituted allyl esters, which is contrary to the traditional Heck-type reactions of allyl esters. Moreover, the regio- and stereoselectivities are also high due to the chelation between O and Pd atoms.

Abstract:In this work, an eco-friendly, green, efficient approach for oxidative and reductive Heck–Mizoroki (HM) reactions was developed, which offered acceptable yields from first-pass experiments. Mono-arylation was achieved without the use of ligands, directing groups, or prefunctionalized alkenes. Considering mild reaction conditions, good functional group compatibility, and great regioselectivity, the method can find broad applications in novel medicine and material development and discovery processes.

Abstract:The palladium catalyst supported on fluoride pillared layered double hydroxide(LDH-F) was prepared by the incipient wetness method,and it was used to catalyze the Heck and Suzuki coupling reactions of aryl bromides.The structure of the Pd/LDH-F catalyst and the leaching of Pd in the solution were characterized by(X-ray) diffraction and inductively coupled plasma.With a small palladium dosage(Pd/aryl bromide molar ratio of 0.001) and no ligand,Pd/LDH-F exhibits higher catalytic activity and selectivity than the catalysts supported on other carriers for the Heck reaction of aryl bromides with styrene.The Pd/LDH-F catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction mixture and reused four times without loss in activity.Under the conditions of Pd/aryl bromide molar ratio of 0.005,room temperature and 3 h,the Pd/LDH-F catalyst can catalyze the Suzuki reaction of bromobenzene with a product yield of 99%.

Abstract:The Mizoroki-Heck reaction, which couples aryl halides with olefins, has been widely used to stitch together the carbogenic cores of numerous complex organic molecules. Given that the position-selective introduction of a halide onto an arene is not always straightforward, direct olefination of aryl carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonds would obviate the inefficiencies associated with generating halide precursors or their equivalents. However, methods for carrying out such a reaction have suffered from narrow substrate scope and low positional selectivity. We report an operationally simple, atom-economical, carboxylate-directed Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H olefination reaction with phenylacetic acid and 3-phenylpropionic acid substrates, using oxygen at atmospheric pressure as the oxidant. The positional selectivity can be tuned by introducing amino acid derivatives as ligands. We demonstrate the versatility of the method through direct elaboration of commercial drug scaffolds and efficient syntheses of 2-tetralone and naphthoic acid natural product cores.

Abstract:We describe the direct synthesis of organophosphorus compounds from ubiquitous aryl and vinyl carboxylic acids via decarbonylative palladium catalysis. The catalytic system shows excellent scope and tolerates a wide range of functional groups (>50 examples). The utility of this powerful methodology is highlighted in the late-stage derivatization directly exploiting the presence of the prevalent carboxylic acid functional group. DFT studies provided insight into the origin of high bond activation selectivity and P(O)-H isomerization pathway.

Abstract:Aryl carboxylic acids are among the most abundant substrates in chemical synthesis and represent a perfect example of a traceless directing group that is central to many processes in the preparation of pharmaceuticals, natural products and polymers. Herein, we describe a highly selective method for the direct step-down reduction of carboxylic acids to arenes, proceeding via well-defined Pd(0)/(ii) catalytic cycle. The method shows a remarkably broad substrate scope, enabling to direct the classical acyl reduction towards selective decarbonylation by a redox-neutral mechanism. The utility of this reaction is highlighted in the direct defunctionalization of pharmaceuticals and natural products, and further emphasized in a range of traceless processes using removable carboxylic acids under mild, redox-neutral conditions orthogonal to protodecarboxylation. Extensive DFT computations were conducted to demonstrate preferred selectivity for the reversible oxidative addition and indicated that a versatile hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) pathway is operable.

Abstract:Mizoroki–Heck reaction of unstrained aryl ketone with acrylate/styrene is accomplished via palladium-catalyzed ligand-promoted C–C bond cleavage. Various (hetero)aryl ketones are compatible in the reaction, affording the alkene product in good to excellent yields. Further applications in the late-stage olefination of some drugs, natural products, and fragrance-derived aryl ketones demonstrate the synthetic utility of this protocol. Abstract:prehalogenation of the substrates is required, and the formation of undesired halide by-products is unavoidable. In addition to the conventional Heck reaction, the use of organometallic reagents is also an attractive strategy. These reactions usually require a catalytic amount of Pd in the presence of an appropriate oxidant (Scheme 1, path B). Despite the wide application of this “oxidative Heck reaction”, preactivation of the aromatic carbon fragments is also required. Catalytic functionalization of arenes via C H bond activation provides a potentially economic and clean method for making many chemicals directly from hydrocarbons. Fujiwara et al. developed an efficient coupling of arenes and activated alkenes through an oxidative palladium(II)-catalyzed process, which is known as the Fujiwara– Moritani oxidative Heck reaction (Scheme 1, path C). Since then, substantial progress has been made to improve the efficiency and practicality of this reaction, such as the improvement of the regioselectivity, and the use of molecular dioxygen as a reoxidant. Abstract:Pd-based nanocatalysts were prepared through immobilization of Pd(OAc) 2 /phenanthroline on nanocarbon materials and subsequent pyrolysis. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron microscopy (TEM). Pd-based nanocatalysts can efficiently catalyze the oxidative Heck reaction of tetrafluoropropylene by using H 2 O 2 as a green oxidant and generate (Z)-β-fluoro-β-(trifluoromethyl)styrenes in excellent yield. The yield and Z/E selectivity of the titled reaction remained higher than 90% after four reaction cycles. Graphic Abstract

Abstract:The enantioselective Pd-catalyzed redox-relay Heck arylation of acyclic alkenyl alcohols allows access to various useful chiral building blocks from simple olefinic substrates. Mechanistically, after the initial migratory insertion, a succession of β-hydride elimination and migratory insertion steps yields a saturated carbonyl product instead of the more general Heck product, an unsaturated alcohol. Here, we investigate the reaction mechanism, including the relay function, yielding the final carbonyl group transformation. M06 calculations predict a ΔΔG(‡) of 1 kcal/mol for the site selectivity and 2.5 kcal/mol for the enantioselectivity, in quantitative agreement with experimental results. The site selectivity is controlled by a remote electronic effect, where the developing polarization of the alkene in the migratory insertion transition state is stabilized by the C-O dipole of the alcohol moiety. The enantioselectivity is controlled by steric repulsion between the oxazoline substituent and the alcohol-bearing alkene substituent. The relay efficiency is due to an unusually smooth potential energy surface without high barriers, where the hydroxyalkyl-palladium species acts as a thermodynamic sink, driving the reaction toward the carbonyl product. Computational predictions of the relative reactivity and selectivity of the double bond isomers are validated experimentally.
