Abstract:Polycrystalline Y2CoGe4O12 has been prepared by standard ceramic methods. The crystal structure (space group P4/nbm; a=9.8465(2), c=4.92986(9)Å) consists of metal-rich layers separated from each other by Ge4O12 groups comprised of four corner-sharing GeO4 tetrahedra. Two cation sites lie within the layers; an eight-coordinate site occupied by yttrium and a six-coordinate site occupied by a 1:1 disordered distribution of yttrium and cobalt. Neutron diffraction revealed two-fold disorder on the oxide sublattice; this has been elucidated using Co K-edge EXAFS spectroscopy. The availability of two sites allows each oxide ion to accommodate the coordination preferences of its single Co/Y neighbour; the GeO4 tetrahedra distort to absorb any consequent strain. The octahedron of anions around each Co2+ cation shows a pseudo-tetragonal distortion with a strain (Co–O)eq–(Co–O)ax/(Co–O)eq=−0.173. This results in an unusually large effective magnetic moment of 6.05µB per Co2+ cation.

Abstract:A new noncentrosymmetric cadmium indium borate, Cd4InO(BO3)3 (CIBO) has been successfully developed via a standard solid-state reaction. Its crystal structure was confirmed by the single crystal X-ray diffraction, which shows that CIBO belongs to the non-centrosymmetric and polar space group Cm. Its structure contains the distorted InO6 and CdOn (n = 6, 8) polyhedra, which link together by sharing an edge or corner to build a three dimensions framework with BO3 triangles accommodated in tunnels. Benefiting from the approximately parallel configuration of BO3 triangles, CIBO exhibited a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) effect (3 × KDP), and moderate birefringence of 0.077@1064 nm. Further optical and thermal characterizations suggest that CIBO possesses a wide transparent window and good thermal stability. Theoretical calculation reveals that the macroscopic SHG coefficients of CIBO results from the synergistic effect of the parallel arrangement of BO3 groups and d10 Cd2+ cation.

Abstract:MOX (M = Fe, Co, Mn, Cr, Lanthanide, or Actinide metals; O = oxygen, X = F, Cl, Br, I), an emerging type of 2D layered materials, have been theoretically predicted to possess unique electronic and magnetic properties. However, 2D MOX have rarely been investigated. Herein, for the first time, ultrathin high‐quality ytterbium oxychloride (YbOCl) single crystals are successfully synthesized via an atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition method. Both theoretical simulations and experimental measurements are utilized to systematically investigate the Raman properties of 2D YbOCl nanosheets. The experimentally observed Eg mode at 85.53 cm−1 and A1g mode at 138.17 cm−1 demonstrate a good match to the results from density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the temperature‐dependent and thickness‐dependent Raman scattering spectra reveal the adjacent layers in YbOCl nanosheets show a relatively weak van der Waals interaction. Additionally, the polarized‐dependent Raman scattering spectra show the intensity of A1g mode exhibits twofold patterns while the intensity of the Eg mode remains constant as the rotation angle changes. These findings could provide the first‐hand experimental information about the 2D YbOCl crystals.

Abstract:The Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped and Er3+ single doped oxyfluoride glasses were prepared by high temperature melting method. The optical properties of the samples were studied. According to differential thermal analysis (DTA) curve, the samples were thermal treated at 552°C, and micro-crystalline were formed after thermal treatment. The near infrared luminescence spectra under 980 nm excitation of the samples were recorded at room temperature. The results showed that the near infrared luminescence intensity increased with increasing Yb3+ concentration. This is because Yb3+ ions absorbed pumped energy of 980 nm through 2F7/2 → 2F5/2 transition, and then the energy was transferred to Er3+ ions by the way of resonance energy transfer and enhanced the 4I15/2 → 4I11/2 transition.

Abstract:Uniform and well-dispersed YBO3 microcrystals with a variety of morphologies (cuboids, cubes, flat quadrilateral particles, etc.) have been synthesized via an easy-to-operate two-step method. During the synthesis process, the well-defined Y(B(OH)4)CO3 precursors with diverse shapes were fabricated by a facile wet-chemical method at ambient pressure, without any template, substrate, or catalyst. Finally, the YBO3 microcrystals which inherit the morphology and dispersity were obtained after a calcination process. The morphology and particle size of the Y(B(OH)4)CO3 and YBO3 microcrystals can be tuned in a controlled manner by simply changing the auxiliary solvent or reaction temperature and time. Upon UV or NIR excitation, the as-synthesized lanthanide ions (Eu3+, Tb3+, Eu3+/Tb3+, Yb3+/Er3+) doped YBO3 samples exhibit the intense characteristic down-conversion or up-conversion multicolor emissions. The dependence of luminescence intensity on different morphologies and crystallinity has also been studied. This facile synthesis strategy may be of significance for the design and preparation of other lanthanide orthoborates functional materials with well-defined morphologies.

Abstract:In this letter, we report the preparing method, structure and superconductivity of single crystal LnBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−y (Ln=Y, Gd, Dy, Yb). The size of the biggest one is 7×3×2 mm 3 . The results of X-ray diffraction show that they are of orthorhombic structure with space group Pmmm. The superconductivity and magnetic properties of these samples are dicussed.

Abstract:A new pyrochlore compound Eu2Cu2/3Nb4/3O7 has been synthesized by the wet chemical method and the crystal structure of the compound has been determined. The crystal structure of Eu2Cu2/3Nb4/3O7 belongs to a tetragonal system and the lattice parameters are a=1.4672 nm and c=1.7582 nm, respectively. The assignments for the absorption bands in the infrared spectra of the compound are given. The results of both crystal structure and infrared spectra demonstrate that Eu2Cu2/3Nb4/3O7 is a pyrochlore compound. The experimentally measured density and the calculated density indicate that there are 24 formula units in each unit cell. On the basis of these results and other published results, it is suggested that most pyrochlore compounds with a general formula A2′B2/3′B4/3″O7 belong to a tetragonal or a hexagonal system and may possess a large cell structure. Eu2Cu2/3Nb4/3O7 is an insulator and the electric resistivity at room temperature is larger than 105 Ω cm.

Abstract:The title compound, tricadmium trizinc tetraborate, Cd3Zn3(BO3)(4), is a new non-linear optical (NLO) crystal and its structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This compound is composed of planar [BO3](3-) groups sharing O atoms with CdO4 or ZnO4 tetrahedra. The BO3 triangles are located on threefold axes and are arranged with nearly the same orientation. The Cd and Zn atoms are disordered on the same site in the proportion 1:1. A strong second harmonic generation of Nd:YAG laser radiation (lambda = 1064 nm) has been observed for a crystal of the title compound.

Abstract:Yb26B12O57, a rare earth oxyborate previously assigned as Yb3BO6, has been studied by various techniques including neutron and X-ray diffraction, 11B NMR spectroscopy, electron diffraction and high angle angular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HADDF-STEM). It crystallizes in the space group C2/m with cell parameters of a=24.5780(4)Å, b=3.58372(5)Å, c=14.3128(3)Å and β=115.079(1)°. The structure consists of slabs of rare earth sesquioxide and borate groups. The sesquioxide part is identified from the structural refinement, and is observed from HADDF-STEM image, while elucidation of borate groups is not straightforward. An additional oxygen atom (O31), which links two B2O5 groups into a B4O11 polyanion, is identified from the analysis of neutron diffraction data. The occupancy of this oxygen site is only quarter, which results in a random distribution of B4O11 and B2O5 groups along the b-direction. The chemical formula of ytterbium oxyborate is Yb26(BO3)4(B2O5)2(B4O11)O24, instead of the simple stoichiometric formula Yb3BO6. This compound is paramagnetic but its susceptibility deviated from the Curie–Weiss law at low temperature.
Melting and solidification of Y1−xYbxBa2Cu3Oy: Influences of Yb doping and oxygen partial pressure

Abstract:A comparative study was undertaken into the calcination conditions for the solid-state synthesis of pure Y1-xYDxBa2CU3O7-delta (X=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0), the starting materials being Y2O3, Yb2O3, BaCO3 and CuO. It was found that the calcination time should go up and the sintering temperature should lower, when the average rare earth ionic radius decreases. Moreover, the melting and the solidification temperatures of Y1-xYbxBa2Cu3Oy rise with decreasing Yb doping and increasing oxygen partial pressure, but depend only weakly on the particle size distribution. These deductions will be important to the fabrication of large-grain (Y,Y-b)BaCuO.

Abstract:Explorative high‐pressure/high‐temperature syntheses (7 GPa, 800 °C) starting from Er2O3, CdO, and H3BO3 yielded single‐crystals of the hitherto unknown compound ErCd2B7O13(BO(OH)3). This compound crystallizes trigonally in the non‐centrosymmetric space group R3c with the unit cell parameters a = 8.8418(2) Å, c = 22.4972(8) Å, and 6 formula units per cell. The crystal structure is composed by corner‐sharing trigonal planar [BO3] and tetrahedral [BO4] groups, forming a complex three‐dimensional framework. In this article, the structural data and characteristics of ErCd2B7O13(BO(OH)3) are presented in detail. Furthermore, the compound ́s infrared spectrum is discussed.

Abstract:Yttrium borate Y17.33(BO3)4(B2O5)2O16, known as Y3BO6previously, was prepared from stoichiometric starting materials of H3BO3and Y2O3by a solid-state reaction at high temperatures. Y17.33(BO3)4(B2O5)2O16crystallizes in the monoclinic space groupCmwith the lattice constantsa=1816.62(3),b=365.16(1),c=1397.75(3) pm, andβ=119.75(2)°. The structure of Y17.33(BO3)4(B2O5)2O16was determined using the direct methods applied to X-ray powder diffraction data and consists of BO3−3and B2O4−5borate groups and seven- and eight-coordinated yttrium atoms. The composition obtained from the structure determination corresponds to Y3BO6with a slight excess of B2O3. The luminescent properties of the Eu3+doped Y17.33(BO3)4(B2O5)2O16materials were studied and the Eu3+emission appears as superimposed bands with a high self-quenching concentration.
