Abstract:The oxidation of cyclohexane in the microchannels not only improves the safety of the reaction, but also the performance of the oxidation reaction. Different gas-liquid micro mixers were used for the mixing of gas and liquid before entering into microchannels, and SIMM-V2 performed best of all. Excellent slug/plug flow can be formed in the microchannels after mixing in the gas-liquid micro mixer when the molar ratio of oxygen to cyclohexane is less than 0.5:1. The conversion of cyclohexane increased as the residence time increased, but the selectivity of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone increased first and then decreased. At the reaction temperature of 200 °C, with the flow rate of the solvent isopropanol being 1 mL/min and the molar ratio of oxygen to cyclohexane being 0.15:1, both the conversion of cyclohexane and selectivity of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone increased with the increase of pressure. The conversion of cyclohexane and selectivity of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone reached 10.10% and 66.93% respectively at the pressure of 8 MPa. It is indicated that the new process by use of uncatalyzed cyclohexane oxidation in the microchannels will have very attractive prospects in the improvement of the safety, intensification of the gas-liquid mass transfer and obtaining good reactive performance. Therefore, the technology shows good potential in industrial applications.

Abstract:Selective aerobic oxidation of benzylic sp3 C–H bonds to generate the corresponding ketones was achieved under continuous-flow conditions. The catalysts N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) and tert-butyl nitrite (TBN) as the precursor of the radical under aerobic conditions motivated this process. Flow microreactors operating under optimized conditions enabled this oxidation with higher efficiency and a shortened reaction time of 54 s (total time was 10 min), which was improved 466 times compared with the batch parallel reaction (7.0 h). Notably, the catalyst and solvent recycling (92.6 and 94.5%) and scale-up experiments (0.87 g h–1 in 28 h) demonstrated the practicability of the protocol. The high product selectivity and functional group tolerance of the process allowed the production of ketones in yields of 41.2 to 90.3%. Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of alcohols to their correspondingaldehydesand ketones plays a fundamental role in many industries, but conventionalstrategies suffer from high costs, harsh reaction conditions, andlow energy efficiency. Here, we combine the p-xylyleneglycol oxidation with the hydrogen evolution reaction via an I-/I-3 (-) redox mediator inan electrochemical flow system where inexpensive graphite felt (GF)is utilized as electrodes. In comparison to traditional chemical oxidation,the electrochemical flow synthesis via the mediator I-/I-3 (-) could offer an outstanding p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehyde selectivity of 96.5% and aFaradaic efficiency of 84.8%. Besides, we realize the gram-scale synthesisof p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehyde at the current densityof 25 mA/cm(2) with low energy consumption because of theprepared catalytically efficient GF-Cu7S4 andGF-Pt electrodes. We explore different substrates and observe theflexible adaptability of our proposed flow synthesis strategy, demonstratingits potential for industrial applications. An electrochemical flow synthesis strategyis proposed hereinfor the gram-scale synthesis of p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehydewith low energy consumption.

Continuous Flow Electrochemistry Enables Practical and Site-Selective C-H Oxidation

Abstract:The selective oxygenation of ubiquitous C(sp 3 )−H bonds remains a highly sought‐after method in both academia and the chemical industry for constructing functionalized organic molecules. However, it is extremely challenging to selectively oxidize a certain C(sp 3 )−H bond to afford alcohols due to the presence of multiple C(sp 3 )−H bonds with similar strength and steric environment in organic molecules, and the alcohol products being prone to further oxidation. Herein, we present a practical and cost‐efficient electrochemical method for the highly selective monooxygenation of benzylic C(sp 3 )−H bonds using continuous flow reactors. The electrochemical reactions produce trifluoroacetate esters that are resistant to further oxidation but undergo facile hydrolysis during aqueous workup to form benzylic alcohols. The method exhibits a broad scope and exceptional site selectivity and requires no catalysts or chemical oxidants. Furthermore, the electrochemical method demonstrates excellent scalability by producing 115 g of one of the alcohol products. The high site selectivity of the electrochemical method originates from its unique mechanism to cleave benzylic C(sp 3 )−H bonds through sequential electron/proton transfer, rather than the commonly employed hydrogen atom transfer (HAT).

Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

The protocol runs under mild reaction condition and air atmosphere with simple undivided electrolysis cell, H2O as oxygen source and cheap graphite plates as both anode and cathode. Abstract:A continuous flow approach for the aerobic photo-oxidation of benzylic substrates to ketone and aldehyde products is presented. The resulting process exploits UV-A LEDs (375 nm) in combination with a Corning AFR reactor that ensures effective gas-liquid mixing and leads to short residence times of 1 min. A variety of benzylic substrates are converted to their corresponding carbonyl products, and scalability is demonstrated to produce multigram quantities of products within a few hours. Overall, this continuous flow approach offers several improvements over alternative oxidation methods due to the combined use of air as an oxidant and SAS (sodium anthraquinone-2 sulfonate) as a water-soluble photocatalyst. The use of greener and safer conditions together with process intensification principles renders this flow approach attractive for further industrial applications.

Abstract:A simple and efficient synthesis of Hantzsch 1,4-dihydropyridines from the condensation of benzaldehydes with alkyl acetoacetates/benzoylacetate and aqueous ammonia in the absence of catalyst has been developed by using a continuous flow microreactor. Under optimized condition, various 1,4-dihydropyridines were obtained in 80-93% yield with high atom efficiency. Compared with using batch system, the present smooth procedure greatly accelerated the reaction due to the excellent mixing and mass transfer of reactant in micro flow system.
