Abstract:A facile and highly chemoselective protocol for the synthesis of benzil derivatives has been developed by oxidation of stilbenes in an I-2-H2O system under air. Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:The development of a mechanochemical Fe-catalyzed Wacker oxidation of olefins with a sustainable and benign procedure holds significant promise for industrial applications. However, navigating the intricate interactions inherent in ball-milling conditions to fine-tune reaction selectivity remains a formidable challenge. Herein, leveraging the dispersive and/or trapping properties of cyclodextrins, an innovative mechanochemical approach is developed through the integration of cyclodextrins into a Fe-catalyzed system, enabling a streamlined Wacker oxidation process from simple and/or commercially available alkenes. Our efforts have yielded optimized mechanochemical conditions demonstrating exceptional reactivity and selectivity in generating a diverse array of ketone products, markedly enhancing catalytic efficiency compared to conventional batch methods. Mechanistic investigations have revealed a predominantly Markovnikov-selective catalytic cycle, effectively minimizing undesired alcohol formation, hydrogenation, and the other competing pathways, boosting both reaction yield and selectivity.

Abstract:Highly selective oxidation of styrene into benzaldehyde with molecular oxygen under solvent-free conditions still remains a great challenge. Herein, Ce-modified heteropolyacid-based poly(ionic liquid)s were prepared as precursors followed by carbonization to obtain nano CeWO x composite confined in N-doped carbon (CeWO x @NC). Then, the as-prepared catalysts were further characterized by FT-IR, TG, XRD, XPS, BET, SEM, TEM-EDS and H 2 -TPR to discuss the relationship between the structure and performance. The nano CeWO x composite with a mixed valence state of W 4+ and W 6+ was formed and well dispersed in the N-doped carbon. Moreover, the valence ratio of W 4+ to W 6+ , redox capacity and oxygen vacancies could be tailored by carbonization temperature and incorporation of Ce, which was strongly correlated with the catalytic performance of CeWO x @NC catalysts. Benefited from that, the CeWO x @NC800 catalyst displays outstanding catalytic performance for solvent-free oxidation of styrene into benzaldehyde with styrene conversion of 45.1%, benzaldehyde selectivity of 89.2% and TOF of 310.1 h −1 at the optimum reaction conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst has shown robust stability and reusability.

Abstract:A reactive oxygen species mediated electrooxidation strategy is proposed to realize the transformation of styrene to benzaldehyde with high selectivity of ca. 89% and Faradaic efficiency of 28.8% on Pt anode. Isotopic labelling, electron paramagnetic resonance and radical scavenging experiments reveal that the in-situ formed OH• and O 2 - • species via anodic water oxidation play the crucial role in selective formation of benzaldehyde.

Abstract:We report a palladium-free Wacker-type oxidation of styrenes using copper as the sole catalyst and trichloroisocyanuric acid as the halogenating agent. The reaction protocol is compatible with diverse functional groups, affording selectively acetophenones. The mechanistic analysis revealed that a site-selective sequential CuII-photooxidation/CuI-photoreduction of the intermediary chlorohydrin is the key to the success of this transformation.

Visible-Light-Promoted Switchable Selective Oxidations of Styrene over Covalent Triazine Frameworks in Water.

Abstract:Using photocatalytic oxidation to convert basic chemicals into high value compounds in environmentally benign reaction media is a current focus in catalytic research. The challenge lies in gaining controllability over product formation selectivity. We design covalent triazine frameworks as heterogeneous, metal-free, and recyclable photocatalysts for visible-light-driven switchable selective oxidation of styrene in pure water. Selectivity in product formation was achieved by activation or deactivation of the specific photogenerated oxygen species. Using the same photocatalyst, by deactivation of photogenerated H2 O2 , benzaldehyde was obtained with over 99 % conversion and over 99 % selectivity as a single product. The highly challenging and sensitive epoxidation of styrene was carried out by creating peroxymonocarbonate as an initial epoxidation agent in the presence of bicarbonate, which led to formation of styrene oxide with a selectivity up to 76 % with near quantitative conversion. This study demonstrates a preliminary yet interesting example for simple control over switchable product formation selectivity for challenging oxidation reactions of organic compounds in pure water.

Abstract:An aerobic acetoxyhydroxylation of alkenes cooperatively catalyzed by organic nitrite and palladium at room temperature using clean and cheap air as the sole oxidant has been developed. Various vicinal diols, diacetoxyalkanes, and dihalogenoalkanes have been synthesized. The gram-scale synthesis has also been approached. Vicinal difluorination and dichlorolation products have also been achieved via this reaction.

Abstract:The reaction of [Na(12)(H(2)O)(38)][WZn{M(H(2)O)}(2)(ZnW(9)O(34))(2)].3H(2)O (M = Mn, Co) and Co(NO(3))(2).6H(2)O in water at 80 degrees C afforded red crystals of [Co(H(2)O)(6)](2){[Co(H(2)O)(4)](2)[Co(H(2)O)(5)](2)WZn[Co(H(2)O)](2)(ZnW(9)O(34))(2)}.10H(2)O (1), which has been characterized by TGA, IR, PXRD, element analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The polyanion [WZn{Co(H(2)O)}(2)(ZnW(9)O(34))(2)](12-) in is double-linked by cobalt(ii) cations to extend into a 1D anionic polymeric chain of {[Co(H(2)O)(4)](2)[Co(H(2)O)(5)](2)WZn[Co(H(2)O)](2)(ZnW(9)O(34))(2)}(4-) with partial free cobalt cations. The redox active cobalt(ii) sites made compound an excellent catalyst for the oxidation of styrene with high styrene conversion (up to 96%) and high benzaldehyde selectivity (up to 99%).

Continuous Flow Electrochemistry Enables Practical and Site-Selective C-H Oxidation

Abstract:The selective oxygenation of ubiquitous C(sp 3 )−H bonds remains a highly sought‐after method in both academia and the chemical industry for constructing functionalized organic molecules. However, it is extremely challenging to selectively oxidize a certain C(sp 3 )−H bond to afford alcohols due to the presence of multiple C(sp 3 )−H bonds with similar strength and steric environment in organic molecules, and the alcohol products being prone to further oxidation. Herein, we present a practical and cost‐efficient electrochemical method for the highly selective monooxygenation of benzylic C(sp 3 )−H bonds using continuous flow reactors. The electrochemical reactions produce trifluoroacetate esters that are resistant to further oxidation but undergo facile hydrolysis during aqueous workup to form benzylic alcohols. The method exhibits a broad scope and exceptional site selectivity and requires no catalysts or chemical oxidants. Furthermore, the electrochemical method demonstrates excellent scalability by producing 115 g of one of the alcohol products. The high site selectivity of the electrochemical method originates from its unique mechanism to cleave benzylic C(sp 3 )−H bonds through sequential electron/proton transfer, rather than the commonly employed hydrogen atom transfer (HAT).

Abstract:Biocatalytic oxidation reactions of toluene derivates to the corresponding aldehydes are typically challenged by regio‐ and chemoselectivity issues. In this contribution we address both challenges by a combined reactant‐ and reaction engineering approach. We demonstrate that the peroxygenase‐catalysed transformation of ring‐substituted toluenes proceeds highly regioselectively in benzylic position. Furthermore, neat reaction conditions not only enable attractive product concentrations (up to 185 mM) but also result in highly chemoselective oxidations to the aldehyde level.
