Abstract:Novel catalytic reductions of tertiary and secondary phosphine oxides to phosphines have been developed. Using tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDS) as a mild reducing agent in the presence of copper complexes, PO bonds are selectively reduced in the presence of other reducible functional groups (FGs) such as ketones, esters, and olefins. Based on this transformation, an efficient one pot reduction/phosphination domino sequence allows for the synthesis of a variety of functionalized aromatic and aliphatic phosphines in good yields.

Abstract:The reduction of phosphine oxideswithout the use ofhighly reactivereductants represents a safer and more sustainable solution for recyclingof organophosphorus compounds. Herein, we disclose an N,N,N & PRIME;,N & PRIME;-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA)-mediated reduction viaan unusual intermolecular hydride transfer. Mechanistic studies suggestthat TMEDA serves as a hydride donor, while the P(V) halophosphoniumsalt acts as the hydride acceptor. This methodology provides a scalableand efficient protocol to reduce phosphine oxides under mild conditions.

Abstract:The C(sp3)–P bond forming reaction utilizing N-tosylhydrazones as readily available alkylating reagents was developed, which provides a new opportunity for preparing phosphine oxide derivatives with moderate to good yields. This reductive coupling reaction is proposed to proceed through an insertion of copper carbene into P–H bond of H-phosphorus oxides. The salient features of the reaction are operational simplicity and functional-group tolerance.

Abstract:Unprecedented chemoselective reductions of phosphine oxides to phosphines proceed smoothly in the presence of catalytic amounts of specific Bronsted acids. By utilizing inexpensive silanes, e.g., PMHS or (EtO)(2)MeSiH, other reducible functional groups such as ketones, aldehydes, olefins, nitriles, and esters are well-tolerated under optimized conditions.

Abstract:The (COCl)2/Hantzsch ester is found to be an effective system for the metal-free reduction of tertiary phosphine oxides. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions, and is applicable to triarylphosphine oxides and alkyldiarylphosphine oxides to produce the corresponding tertiary phosphines in good to excellent yields. This new finding provides a practical, convenient and metal-free method for the reduction of tertiary phosphine oxides to tertiary phosphines, and shows potential application in organic synthesis.

Abstract:A highly chemoselective reduction of phosphine oxides was demonstrated under the transition metal‐free and alkaline reaction conditions. During the reaction, P=O bond was firstly electrophilically activated by an anhydride and subsequently reduced by the versatile and cheap NaH which was strengthened by 15‐crown‐5. By the strategy, a variety of phosphine oxides including those bearing functional groups such as methyl, methoxyl, phenyl, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, trifluoromethyl, nitrile, ester, alkenyl, alkynyl and heterocycles were transformed readily into the corresponding phosphines in good to high yields. This work represents an efficient method for reducing phosphine oxides forming phosphines.

Abstract:<p indent="0mm">Over the last decade, phosphine-(thio)ureas have been extensively used as bifunctional catalysts in a variety of asymmetric reactions <italic>via</italic> organophosphine or dual-reagent catalysis. By combination of phosphine-thioureas and copper salts in this article, we developed asymmetric cooperative catalysis which served as an efficient strategy for asymmetric (3+2) cycloadditions and kinetic resolutions. The reactions gave the pyrazolone scaffolds with high yields and good enantioselectivities. Broad substrate scope was demonstrated. Notably, the crystal structure of the active Cu(I)-species was obtained, providing valuable insight into the interaction of copper and phosphine-thioureas.

Abstract:Herein we reported a manganese promoted reductive cross‐coupling approach to construct P‒S bond. This is a practical method for the synthesis of mono‐thiophosphanes, bis‐thiophosphanes and tri‐thiophosphanes under mild conditions. The strategy featured a wide range of substrate scope including various disulfides and phosphine chlorides, constructing diverse sulfur‐containing organophosphorus compounds from inodorous and readily available starting materials. The employment of reductive conditions avoided the generation of phosphorothioates (PV) by‐products. Ultimately, gram‐scale synthesis and applications were explored. Extensive experiments indicated that the phosphine radical cascade process was involved in the catalytic cycle.
