Abstract:Pincer ligands have a remarkable ability to impart control over small molecule activation chemistry and catalytic activity; therefore, the design of new pincer ligands and the exploration of their reactivity profiles continues to be a frontier in synthetic inorganic chemistry. In this work, a novel, monoanionic NNN pincer ligand containing two phosphinimine donors was used to create a series of mononuclear Ni complexes. Ligand metallation in the presence of NaOPh yielded a nickel phenoxide complex that was used to form a mononuclear hydride complex on treatment with pinacolborane. Attempts at ligand metallation with NaN(SiMe3)(2)resulted in the activation of both phosphinimine methyl groups to yield an anionic,cis-dialkyl product, in which dissociation of one phosphinimine nitrogen leads to retention of a square planar coordination environment about Ni. Protonolysis of this dialkyl species generated a monoalkyl product that retained the 4-membered metallacycle. The insertion of 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide (xylNC) into this nickel metallacycle, followed by proton transfer, generated a new five-membered nickel metallacycle. Kinetic studies suggested rate-limiting proton transfer (KIE >= 3.9 +/- 0.5) from the alpha-methylene unit of the putative iminoacyl intermediate.

Abstract:We report the amination of aryl carbamates using nickel-catalysis. The methodology is broad in scope with respect to both coupling partners and delivers aminated products in synthetically useful yields. Computational studies provide the full catalytic cycle of this transformation, and suggest that reductive elimination is the rate-determining step. Given that carbamates are easy to prepare, robust, inert to Pd-catalysis, and useful for arene functionalization, these substrates are particularly attractive partners for use in synthesis. The sequential use of carbamate functionalization/site-selective cross-coupling processes highlights the utility of this methodology.

Abstract:Based on previous work related to the design and application of rigid tridentate phosphine-pyridine-phenyl coordination offered by a PNC-pincer ligand upon cyclometalation to nickel, the synthesis, spectroscopic and solid state characterization and redox-reactivity of two NiII(PNC) complexes featuring either a methyl (2CH3 ) or CF3 co-ligand (2CF3 ) are described. One-electron oxidation is proposed to furnish C-C reductive elimination, as deduced from a combined chemical, electrochemical, spectroscopic and computational study. One-electron reduction results in a ligand-centered radical anion, as supported by electrochemistry, UV spectroelectrochemistry, EPR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. This further attenuates the breadth of chemical reactivity offered by such PNC-pincer ligands.

Abstract:P(V) iminophosphorane compounds are accessed via electrochemical oxidation of commercially available P(III) phosphines, including mono-, di- and tri-dentate phosphines, as well as chiral phosphines. The reaction uses inexpensive bis(trimethylsilyl)carbodiimide as an efficient and safe aminating reagent. DFT calculations, cyclic voltammetry, and NMR studies provide insight into the reaction mechanism. The proposed mechanism reveals a special case of sequential paired electrolysis. DFT calculations of the frontier orbitals of an iminophosphorane are compared with those of the analogous phosphines and phosphine oxides. X-ray crystallographic studies of the ligands as well as a Ni-coordination complex provide structural insight for these ligands. The utility of these iminophosphoranes as ligands is demonstrated in nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile couplings including C(sp 2 )-C(sp 3 ) and C(sp 2 )-C(sp 2 ) couplings, an electrochemically driven C–N cross-coupling, and a photochemical arylative C(sp 3 )–H functionalization. In some cases, these new ligands provide improved performance over commonly used sp 2 - N -based ligands (e.g. 4,4'-di- tert -butyl-2,2'-bipyrdine).

Abstract:The practical synthesis of P-stereogenic tertiary phosphines, which have wide applications in asymmetric catalysis, materials, and pharmaceutical chemistry, represents a significant challenge. A regio- and enantioselective hydrophosphination using cheap and ubiquitous alkynes catalyzed by a nickel complex was designed, in which the toxic and air-sensitive secondary phosphines were prepared in situ from bench-stable secondary phosphine oxides. This methodology has been demonstrated with unprecedented substrate scope and functional group compatibility to afford electronically and structurally diversified P(III) compounds. Abstract:Fluoro-nickelacyclopentanes are key intermediates in the synthesis of hydrofluoro-carbons and fluorinated ketones. To better understand substituent effects on their reactivity, we have prepared a series of nickel complexes from perfluoro(methyl vinyl ether) (PMVE) and chloro-trifluoroethylene (CTFE). Both fluoroalkenes react with Ni(cod)2 + 2 equiv of P(O i Pr)3 to give regioselective formation of the tail-to-tail nickelacyclopentanes Ni[–CFX(CF2)2CFX–][P(O i Pr)3]2 (X = OCF3, Cl) as a 3:1 mixture of the trans/cis diastereomers for PMVE and the trans diastereomer selectively for CTFE. Reaction of both metallacycles with 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) displaces the phosphite ligands, affording two (X = OCF3) or one (X = Cl) diastereomer of electron-rich congeners Ni[–CFX(CF2)2CFX–](dppe). Although these dppe-derived metallacycles did not react cleanly with fluoride-abstracting Lewis acids (Et2O·BF3 or Me3SiOTf), heating trans-Ni[–CFCl(CF2)2CFCl–](dppe) induced the intramolecular nucleophilic attack by one –PPh2 arm of the dppe ligand on a C–Cl bond, affording both trans and cis diastereomers in a 1:1 ratio. Using the wider bite-angle bis(phosphine) xantphos with PMVE also gave the trans/cis nickelacyclopentanes, which feature κ3-P,O,P-xantphos coordination. With CTFE, the xantphos ligand gave an unexpected fluoro-nickelacyclopentane derivative proposed to result from tail-to-tail oxidative cyclization, followed by PPh2 + migration, leading to an unusual coupling of the fluoroalkyl moiety with the xanthene backbone.

Abstract:m-CAr–H bond functionalization of tertiary phosphines was developed using [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 as a catalyst. Desired product structures were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Mechanistic experiments indicated that m-CAr–H bond functionalization was a radical reaction and that a hexagonal ruthenacycle complex was a crucial intermediate in the process. Abstract:We report a nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling between readily available nitroarenes and phosphine oxides to approach phosphinic amides. Abstract:An efficient Pd-catalyzed cleavage of C(sp(3))-N bonds in secondary amines and a consequent C(sp(2))-N and C(sp(3))-N coupling process was developed. Various secondary amines could be used to react with alkenyl or aryl dibromides, affording pyrroles and indoles in high yields. Cyclopentadiene-phosphine ligands, a new type of P-olefin ligand, were found to be able to promote the efficiency of this Pd-catalyzed process remarkably. A reactive Pd complex coordinated with a cyclopentadiene-phosphine ligand was successfully isolated and structurally characterized.
Mechanistic Insights Into C-S Cross-Coupling Reactions Catalyzed By Nickel Bis(Phosphinite) Pincer Complexes

Abstract:Nickel bis(phosphinite) pincer complexes [2,6-(R2PO)(2)C6H3]NiCl (R = Ph, 1a; R = Me, 1b; R = Pr-i, 1c; R = Bu-t, 1d) show catalytic activity in cross-coupling of aryl iodides and aryl thiols. The optimal catalytic conditions involve 1 mol % of la and 2 equiv of KOH (with respect to aryl thiols) in DMF at 80 degrees C and tolerate a variety of functional groups in the substrates. The potential intermediates in these catalytic reactions, such as nickel thiolate complexes [2,6-(Ph2PO)(2)C6H3]-NiSAr (Ar = Ph, 2a; Ar = p-MeC6H4, 3a; Ar = p-MeOC6H4, 4a), have been synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. The reaction between 2a and PhI in DMF-d(7) is slow enough to argue against 2a being directly involved in the C-S bond-forming step. NMR studies suggest that the pincer ligand framework in complexes I a, 3a, and 4a is destroyed by KOH via the cleavage of P-O bonds to release Ph2POK, and further decomposition leads to Ph3P and other phosphorus-containing products. The cross-coupling reactions are more effectively catalyzed by Ni(COD)(2)/Ph2P(O)H. The structures of 1b, 2a, 4a, and [2,6-(Ph2PO)(2)C6H3]NiP(O)Ph-2 (5a), which is relevant to the decomposition process, have been studied by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:A highly efficient, Ag-I/K2S2O8-mediated regioselective phosphonation reaction has been developed by using electron-deficient directing groups. These phosphonation reactions were performed with N,N-dialkylbenzamides, N,N-dialkylbenzenesulfonamides, and nitrobenzene. Abstract:In this article, synthesis of bis(phosphine), o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)N(H)CH2C6H4PPh2-o (1) (hereafter referred to as "PCNHCP" and its anionic form as "PCNCP") and its group 10 metal chemistry and catalytic studies are described. PCNHCP (1) on reaction with NiCl2(DME) and PdCl2(COD) afforded pincer complexes, [MCl{(PCNCP)3-P,N,P}] (M = Ni, 2; Pd, 3). Similar reaction of 1 with PtCl2(COD) yielded a chelate complex, [PtCl2{(PCNHCP)2-P,P}](4), which on further treatment with LiHMDS produced 1,2-azaphospholene-phosphine complex, (5) via P−C/P−N bond metathesis. Passing dry HCl gas through the solution of 5 resulted in benzene elimination to form (6). Treatment of 1 with PtCl2(COD) and Pt(Cl)(Me)(COD) in the presence of a base resulted in pincer complexes [PtX{(PCNCP)3-P,N,P}] (X = Cl, 7; Me, 8). Nickel complex 2 catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction between bromobenzene and phenyl boronic acid to give the corresponding biphenyls in good yield. The Platinum complex 5 showed good catalytic activity towards regio- and stereoselective hydroboration of terminal alkynes. Both the catalytic reactions were performed under mild reaction conditions with a very low catalyst loading.
