Abstract:CuI-catalyzed aerobic oxidative synthesis of imidazoheterocycles has been achieved. Four hydrogen atoms were removed in one step. This protocol was compatible with a broad range of functional groups, and it has been also successfully extended to unsaturated ketones, bringing about the formation of alkenyl-substituted imidazoheterocycles, which were difficult to prepare by previous means. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that this reaction was most likely to proceed through a catalytic Ortoleva-King reaction. By using this method, the marketed drug Zolimidine could be prepared with 90% yield on a gram scale from commercially available materials.

Abstract:Efficient copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidative C-H and C-C functionalization of 1-[2-(arylamino)aryl]ethanones leading to acridones has been developed. The procedure involves cleavage of aromatic C-H and acetyl C-C bonds with intramolecular formation of a diarylketone bond. The protocol uses inexpensive Cu(O2CCF3)2 as catalyst, pyridine as additive, and economical and environmentally friendly oxygen as the oxidant, and the corresponding acridones with various functional groups were obtained in moderate to good yields.

Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:A novel, efficient, and practical method for the synthesis of imidazopyridine derivatives has been developed through the copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidative CH functionalization of substituted pyridines with N-(alkylidene)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-amines. The procedure occurs by cleavage of the NN bond in the N-(alkylidene)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-amines and activation of an aryl CH bond in the substituted pyridines. This is the first example of the preparation of imidazopyridine derivatives by using pyridines as the substrates by transition-metal-catalyzed CH functionalization. This method should provide a novel and efficient strategy for the synthesis of other nitrogen heterocycles.

Abstract:A convenient and efficient copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of primary amines to aryl nitriles was described. Various benzylic and allylic amines were selectively oxidized to the corresponding nitriles in high yields using CuBr2/NMI as the catalyst and O2 as the oxidant. The oxidation reaction profiles monitored by 1H NMR disclosed the scenario of the reaction path as well as the role of the additives. The addition of NMI increased the rate of reaction and suppressed the hydrolysis and the deamination.

Abstract:A highly efficient copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidative intramolecular C-H amination has been developed using substituted 2-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-N-alkylbenzenamines as the starting materials, and the corresponding imidazobenzimidazole derivatives were obtained in excellent yields. This is an economical and practical method for the construction of N-heterocycles.

Abstract:Catalytic asymmetric electrochemical C-H functionalization of simple ketones has been developed. The transformation is realized by the combination of electrochemical oxidation and chiral primary amine catalysis. This metal- and oxidant-free method furnishes diverse C1-alkylated tetrahydroisoquinolines in high yields and with excellent enantioselectivities under very mild conditions.

Abstract:A copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidative cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) of amine with α-carbonyl aldehyde has been developed. Many types of amines are tolerant in this transformation leading to various α-ketoamides compounds. Wide substrate scope, CDC strategy and using air as oxidant make this transformation highly efficient and practical. Molecular oxygen acts not only as the oxidant, but also as an initiator to trigger this catalytic process. Furthermore, mechanism studies show that carbonyl group of α-carbonyl aldehyde plays a role as the directing group to facilitate this chemical process.
