Abstract:Two series of amine-functionalized Zr-based mixed-linker metal-organic frameworks (MOFs; UiO-66-Mix and UiO-67-Mix) have been synthesized with different ratios of 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate/2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and 4,4-biphenyldicarboxylic acid/2-amino-biphenyl-4,4-dicarboxylic acid incorporated into their structures. The pendant amino groups were postmodified by the condensation reaction with pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde, and Pd metal centers were anchored onto the MOFs by coordination to the pyridylimine moieties. The two series of heterogeneous Pd catalysts (UiO-66-Mix-PI-Pd and UiO-67-Mix-PI-Pd) were utilized for the Suzuki and Heck cross-coupling reactions in ethanol/water under mild reaction conditions and they showed a remarkably high catalytic activity. The porosity of the MOFs and the density of the metal binding sites of the Pd catalysts had great influence on the Suzuki and Heck cross-coupling reactions. The best results were achieved with a very low Pd loading (0.054mol%), and the use of UiO-67-3-PI-Pd catalyst led to the complete conversion of reaction substrates. Moreover, the catalysts were readily recovered and recycled in at least 10cycles without significant leaching or loss of catalytic activity. The catalysts were generally applicable for different reaction substrates with various substituents in both Suzuki and Heck reactions.

Abstract:The synthesis of a polyethylene (PE) gel containing self-incarcerated palladium(0) nanoparticles is described. The PE gel matrix without any special functionality was synthesized by one-pot chain walking copolymerization of ethylene and 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate facilitated by a Pd-diimine complex (1). The Pd(II) species from 1 were immobilized in situ onto the gel matrix and further reduced to Pd(0) nanoparticles as a result of catalyst 1 deactivation during polymerization and methanol (a reducer) washing in the polymer purification process. The resulting Pd-containing PE gel (2) is shown to be a high-performance and facilely reusable heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck and Suzuki coupling reactions of iodobenzene or aryl bromides. An average TOF of 460 h(-1) was achieved with an average 0.57 ppm Pd leaching in each cycle of the Heck reaction of iodobenzene when the PE gel 2 was recycled 10 times. A maximum TOF of 3.33 x 104 h-(1) was reached and less than 0.64 ppm of Pd was leached in the Suzuki reactions of aryl bromides with water as solvent.

Abstract:A highly efficient and reusable catalyst, palladium (II) complex supported on functionalized silica, was prepared by anchoring palladium (II) onto 2,6-bis(5,6-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazine-3-yl)pyridine [BTP]-modified mesoporous silica (labeled as Pd-BTP/SiO2). The catalyst was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) analysis. Its catalytic performance was tested for the Heck coupling reactions between aryl halides with acrylic acid or styrene, and good to excellent results (higher conversions 87–96% and yields 66–78%) were obtained. The catalyst system was stable under the reaction conditions and could be successfully reused more than five times without the loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract:We describe here a method to stabilize Pd(0) on the surface of hollow magnetic mesoporous spheres (HMMS), with Fe3O4 nanoparticles embedded in the mesoporous shell. The catalyst was characterized using TEM, XRD, VSM, BET and XPS. The catalyst afforded fast conversion for various aromatic nitro and unsaturated compounds in ethanol under an H2 atmosphere even at room temperature. The catalyst showed an efficient hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds rather than nitro compounds. Furthermore it was found that the catalyst also exhibited a high activity in the Suzuki coupling reaction. The catalyst could be recovered in a facile manner from the reaction mixture and recycled six times without any loss in activity.

Abstract:We here report the synthesis, characterization and catalytic performance of new supported Pd(0) and Pd(II) catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by TEM, XRD, FT-IR, VSM and ICP. The catalysts were found to be active in both forms, Pd(0) and Pd(II), for hydrogenation and Suzuki cross-coupling reactions. In contrast to most supported catalysts, the newly developed catalysts were prepared using nearly the same synthetic strategy, and were easily recovered and recycled from the reaction mixture by applying an external magnet and reused in 5 cycles without significant loss in activity.

Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:A series of MPdMe10 CB[5] (M=Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs; Me10 CB[5]=decamethylcucurbit[5]uril) hybrid solid materials have been successfully synthesized for the first time through a simple diffusion method. These as-prepared hybrid solids have been applied as phosphine-free precatalysts for Heck cross-coupling reactions with excellent catalytic performance and good recyclability. In the processes of the catalytic reactions, the activated Pd(II) species were released from the crystalline hybrid precatalysts and transformed into catalytically active Pd nanoparticles, which have been demonstrated as key to carry on the catalytic reactions for the recoverable precatalysts MPdMe10 CB[5] (M=K, Rb, and Cs). It has also been rationalized that the introduction of different alkali metals afforded crystalline hybrid precatalysts with different crystal structures, which are responsible for their diversified stability and reusability presented in Heck reactions.

Abstract:Well-dispersed palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) supported on amine-functionalized, mixed-linker metal-organic frameworks (MIXMOFs) based on MIL-53(Al) were prepared by using the ion-exchange method. Pd NPs were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The mean diameter of Pd NPs is approximately 3.2 nm. It was found that the Pd NPs supported on amine-functionalized MIXMOFs are stable at high temperature. The Pd NPs exhibit efficient catalytic activity for Heck reaction and can be easily recovered and reused.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetic particles were prepared by a hydrothermal method and then successively covered by Metal–Organic-Frameworks MIL-101-NH 2 with a high surface area. This was followed by deposition of Pd(OAc) 2 on Fe 3 O 4 –NH 2 @MIL-101-NH 2 particles. The final catalyst was characterized with FT-IR, nitrogen physisorption, thermogravimetry (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The prepared magnetic catalyst was effectively used in the Heck coupling reaction in the presence of an inorganic base. The reaction parameters such as the base type, amounts of catalyst and solvents, temperature, and substrates ratios were optimized. The catalyst was then magnetically separated, washed, and reused 7 times without losing significantly catalytic activity. Graphic Abstract

Abstract:To maintain stability and activity in Heck-coupling reaction, a novel composite carrier with controllable uniform size, high complex ability and mechanical intensity was fabricated in microchannel using natural N-doped biomolecule chitosan and silica as ingredients. Post carbonization increased its thermal stability and supported Pd@C/silica catalysts can be acquired after Pd loading. Only 2mg supported Pd@C/silica catalysts (0.44μmol) can achieve high yield (>95%) in a typical Heck-coupling reaction and maintained activity even after 8 times of recycling. This type of novel porous microspheres carrier can cut down the usage of noble Pd by avoiding the leaching as well as aggregation of Pd nanoparticles, and could be widely applied in similar chemical reactions.

Abstract:Abstract A Pd-Co bimetallic alloy encapsulated in melamine-based dendrimer supported on magnetic nanoparticles denoted as γ-Fe 2 O 3 @MBD/Pd-Co was synthesized by a facile co-complexation-reduction method and characterized sufficiently. The catalytic evaluation of γ-Fe 2 O 3 @MBD/Pd-Co showed promising results in the Mizoroki–Heck and Buchwald–Hartwig amination reactions of various iodo-, bromo- and challenging chloroarenes in aqueous media. The synergetic cooperative effect of both Pd and Co and dispersion of the catalyst in water due to the encapsulation of γ-Fe 2 O 3 by melamine-based dendrimer lead to high catalytic performance compared with the monometallic counterparts. The dispersion of the magnetic catalyst also facilitates the recovery and reuse of the catalyst by ten consecutive extraction and final magnetic isolation with no loss of catalytic activity, keeping its structure unaltered.

Abstract:Fe3O4 and Pd nanoparticles were assembled on sulfonated graphene (s-G) by an easy chemical approach and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The resulting material could be dispersed homogeneously in water or water/ethanol and further used as an excellent semi-heterogeneous catalyst for the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction in an environmentally friendly solvent under ligand-free ambient conditions. The high heterogeneous catalytic activity appears to be due to the small size of Pd nanoparticles and homogeneous distribution of the nanoparticles on the Fe3O4/s-G matrix. In addition, the catalytic activity did not deteriorate even after repeated applications, which may be due to the easy and efficient magnetic separation of the catalyst and the high dispersion and stability of the catalyst in an aqueous solution.

Abstract:As an emerging material with the potential to combine the high efficiency of homogeneous catalysts and high stability and recyclability of heterogeneous catalysts, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been viewed as one of the candidates to produce catalysts of the next generation. Herein, we heterogenized the highly active mono(phosphine)-Pd complex on surface of UiO-66 MOF, as a catalyst for Suzuki and Heck cross coupling reactions. The successful immobilization of these Pd-monophosphine complexes on MOF surface to form UiO-66-PPh2-Pd was characterized and confirmed via comprehensive set of analytical methods. UiO-66-PPh2-Pd showed high activity and selectivity for both Suzuki and Heck Cross Coupling Reactions. This strategy enabled facile access to mono(phosphine) complexes which are challenging to design and require multistep synthesis in homogeneous systems, paving the way for future MOF catalysts applications by similar systems.

Abstract:With the advent of nanotechnology, the rational engineering of core-shell nanostructure-based catalysts has received significant attention owing to their potential for exhibiting unique properties such as durability, structural flexibility, porous shell adaptability etc. In this study, we have designed a magnetic core-shell based heterogeneous nanocatalyst [Pd(0)@His-SiO2/CoFe2O4], comprising a histidine functionalized silica supported cobalt ferrite core encapsulated with Pd(0) nanoparticle shell. Cobalt ferrite was synthesized using hydrothermal process and modified with silica to obtain homogenous dispersity, dense structure and to prevent self-agglomeration in the core. Further, the core moiety was functionalized using a non-toxic amine linker, i.e. histidine which acts as a robust anchor for holding the Pd(0) shell. The catalytic activity of Pd(0)@His-SiO2/CoFe2O4 was evaluated for oxidative deprotection of oximes and Heck coupling and excellent results were obtained with high recyclability of the catalyst. Comparative study showed that Pd(0) nanoparticles shell is active species and cobalt ferrite core has a promotional role. XPS showed the existence of synergism between the core and the shell i.e. electron density was drifted from cobalt ferrite core towards the Pd(0) shell, which could be the reason for its enhanced catalytic performance. VSM demonstrated the high saturation magnetization in both fresh and reused catalysts, which facilitates the separation of the catalyst from the reaction mixture. The above-mentioned approach based on core-shell nanostructure provides a useful platform for the fabrication of an active metal like Pd(0) with easy accessibility, excellent activity and convenient recovery.

Abstract:In the present work, Palladium nanoparticles were supported on Cinchonine functionalized ZrFe2O4 MNPs. The structure, morphology, and physicochemical properties of the particles were characterized through different analytical techniques, including fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) techniques. Moreover, it was obtained as an efficient catalyst for Hiyama and Suzuki reactions under green conditions with good to excellent yields. This method has the advantages of simple methodology, high yields, easy work-up, greener conditions, and short reaction times. This catalyst was reused four times in C-C coupling reaction without loss of its catalytic activity. The reused catalyst was characterized by ICP and FT-IR techniques. Heterogeneity and stability of ZrFe2O4@SiO2-S-CCH-Pd were studied by hot filtration test and ICP analysis.

Abstract:A facile one-step hydrothermal approach was proposed to fabricate Pd nano-particles decorated Mg–Al layered double hydroxide nanosheets (denoted as Pd NPs/Mg–Al LDH composite), wherein polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) functioned as both a reductant and stabilizer. The resulting samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and BET techniques. The effect of synthetic parameters during the hydrothermal reaction including PVP dosage and temperature on the size and distribution of Pd NPs was investigated in details. Pd nanoparticles with an average particle size of 3.6 nm were uniformly supported onto Mg–Al LDH nanosheets under the optimal conditions. The obtained Pd NPs/Mg–Al LDH composite could serve as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck reaction between iodobenzene and methyl acrylate, achieving a high yield of 95.8% within 60 min at 100 °C.
