Abstract:Two series of amine-functionalized Zr-based mixed-linker metal-organic frameworks (MOFs; UiO-66-Mix and UiO-67-Mix) have been synthesized with different ratios of 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate/2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and 4,4-biphenyldicarboxylic acid/2-amino-biphenyl-4,4-dicarboxylic acid incorporated into their structures. The pendant amino groups were postmodified by the condensation reaction with pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde, and Pd metal centers were anchored onto the MOFs by coordination to the pyridylimine moieties. The two series of heterogeneous Pd catalysts (UiO-66-Mix-PI-Pd and UiO-67-Mix-PI-Pd) were utilized for the Suzuki and Heck cross-coupling reactions in ethanol/water under mild reaction conditions and they showed a remarkably high catalytic activity. The porosity of the MOFs and the density of the metal binding sites of the Pd catalysts had great influence on the Suzuki and Heck cross-coupling reactions. The best results were achieved with a very low Pd loading (0.054mol%), and the use of UiO-67-3-PI-Pd catalyst led to the complete conversion of reaction substrates. Moreover, the catalysts were readily recovered and recycled in at least 10cycles without significant leaching or loss of catalytic activity. The catalysts were generally applicable for different reaction substrates with various substituents in both Suzuki and Heck reactions.

Abstract:A Schiff base hollow covalent organic framework (COF) was used for anchoring Pd(II) to synthesize the Pd@COF-TB nanocatalyst. Then, the as-synthesized Pd@COF-TB catalyst has been meticulously characterized using several methods. Thereafter, the catalytic performance of the Pd@COF-TB species regarding Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions was examined, and the corresponding products were obtained with good to excellent yields. Besides, the Pd@COF-TB catalyst could be recovered conveniently and reused at least eight times without obvious decrease in activity and selectivity. More importantly, the leaching of Pd during the reaction process could be negligible, which is crucially important when preparing bioactive species.

Abstract:A series of mononuclear complexes named [(bpy)Pd(L)]NO3 (1 center dot NO3 center dot H2O), Rbpy)Pt(L)]NO3 (2 center dot NO3 center dot H2O), and Rphen)Pd(L)]NO3 (3 center dot NO3 center dot H2O) (where bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, phen=1,10-phenanthroline) have been self-assembled through a directed coordination approach that involves spontaneous deprotonation of the 1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione (L) in aqueous solution driven by coordination effect. NO3- in these assemblies can be effectively replaced by PF6- in a solution of KPF6. All of these new mononuclear complexes have been fully characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and ESI-MS analysis. X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 center dot PF6 center dot CH3CN clearly shows that a dimeric crystal structure is formed by the stacking interactions and weak intramolecular Pd ... Pd (0.322 4 nm) interactions. More importantly, all of these three assemblies can be employed as a new kind of high-efficiency catalysts for Suzuki-coupling reaction. High-performance Heterogeneous Catalysis with Surface-Exposed Stable Metal Nanoparticles.

Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:A novel catalyst with a yolk-shell structure was designed to overcome the leaching of noble metals in heterogeneous catalysis. Through a template method, palladium (Pd) nanoparticles were encapsulated by hollow spherical covalent organic frameworks (COFs) consisting of 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (Tp) and p-phenylenediamine (Pa). The final catalyst with a yolk-shell structure was denoted as (Pd/C)@TpPa COFs. The unique morphology and chemical structure of this novel composite (Pd/C)@TpPa COFs were confirmed by a transmission electron microscope (TEM), a laser particle analyzer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and N2 adsorption and desorption. Subsequently, to demonstrate its catalytic performance brought by structural design, this novel catalyst was applied to catalyze the Suzuki reaction. Interestingly, this catalyst exhibited a brilliant size cutoff efficiency for aryl benzene amounting to 100% and achieved a high conversion with only 0.05 mol% Pd loading. Besides, this catalyst could be readily recovered via filtration and reused for at least five consecutive cycles without any significant loss in its activity.

Abstract:In this work, we present an effective strategy to enhance the reactivity and durability of molecular organometallic catalysts by constructing into porous frameworks, as demonstrated by triphenylphosphine (PPh 3 ). Such PPh 3 moieties accessible via the porous structures could be partially metalated by Pd species to generate a highly efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for Suzuki coupling of aryl chlorides. Site isolation in the rigid framework stabilizes the catalytically active monophosphine‐ligated complex against deactivation into less active assemblies of bisphosphine‐Pd. Meanwhile, the densely populated free ligands inhibit the catalytically active sites from decomposition, thereby highlighting the beneficial effects of such a platform. The tunability of porous polymer synthesis thus gives great promise to impart numerous organometallic catalysts constituted by readily available ligands with unique reactivity, which are not trivially achievable with traditional systems.

Abstract:As an emerging material with the potential to combine the high efficiency of homogeneous catalysts and high stability and recyclability of heterogeneous catalysts, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been viewed as one of the candidates to produce catalysts of the next generation. Herein, we heterogenized the highly active mono(phosphine)-Pd complex on surface of UiO-66 MOF, as a catalyst for Suzuki and Heck cross coupling reactions. The successful immobilization of these Pd-monophosphine complexes on MOF surface to form UiO-66-PPh2-Pd was characterized and confirmed via comprehensive set of analytical methods. UiO-66-PPh2-Pd showed high activity and selectivity for both Suzuki and Heck Cross Coupling Reactions. This strategy enabled facile access to mono(phosphine) complexes which are challenging to design and require multistep synthesis in homogeneous systems, paving the way for future MOF catalysts applications by similar systems.

Abstract:An efficient catalyst system based on a Pd-metalated porous organic polymer bearing phenanthroline ligands was designed and synthesized. This catalyst was applied to various C–C bond-forming reactions, including the Suzuki, Heck and Sonogashira couplings, and afforded the corresponding products while exhibiting excellent activities and selectivities. More importantly, this catalyst can be readily recycled. These features show that such catalysts have significant potential applications in the future.

Abstract:Four air stable palladium(II) triiodine complexes containing N-heterocyclic carbenes with pyridinium groups [(NHC)PdI3] have been synthesized and characterized by NMR and elemental analyses. The molecular structures of the two complexes have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These NHC-Pd(II) complexes are active catalysts for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions under atmosphere conditions with moderate conversion.

Abstract:The preparation of hollow metal-organic framework (MOF) structures through a stepped dissolution-regrowth method avoids the troublesome template removal and etching process, although it still faces several challenges due to its intrinsic limitations. In this work, we reported the preparation of ferrocenyl MOF hollow microspheres by coordinating Fc(COOH)(2) with Zn2+ assisted by polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). It was found that PVP was beneficial for the growth of well-defined MOF hollow microspheres (2-4 mu m). Both the internal and exterior morphology could be regulated by controlling the dose of PVP (0-30 equiv.). In addition, the crystallinity, thermal stability of hollow MOFs and repeatability of synthesis were improved by PVP. Owing to the excellent redox properties of the ferrocenyl ligand (1,1 '-ferrocenedicarboxylic acid), the prepared MOF hollow microspheres exhibited good redox properties, and were able to reduce the Pd2+ precursor into Pd nanoparticles (diameter = 3-5 nm) under mild conditions (25 degrees C, aqueous solution) without extra reducing agents. The Pd-loaded MOF hollow microspheres showed remarkable catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol with a reaction rate constant k of 1.82 x 10(-2) s(-1).

Abstract:It has become possible to establish a connection between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis with atomically precise metal clusters. Due to their defined coordination geometry, in this work, atomically precise Pd1 Au8 (PPh3 )8 2+ clusters are exploited to identify the crucial factor that can impact the catalytic efficiency for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling process and further gain valuable insight into the exclusive cooperative effect of the central Pd atom and the peripheral Au atoms of the Pd1 Au8 (PPh3 )8 2+ cluster on controlling the cross-coupling reaction. Specifically, a heterogeneous catalyst, namely Pd1 Au8 @Resin, is designed by exchanging positively charged Pd1 Au8 (PPh3 )8 2+ clusters into the porous resin, thereby not only facilitating catalyst recyclability when performed in a batch reactor, but also realizing time-on-stream performance for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction carried out in a fixed-bed reactor. The integrated advantages of homogeneous complexes and heterogeneous catalysts are expected to advance the usability of atomically precise metal clusters as heterogeneous catalysts for important bond constructions in homogeneous systems.

Abstract:Well dispersed Pd nanoparticles supported on amino functionalized metal-organic frameworks MIL-53(Al)-NH2 (Al(OH)[H2N-BDC], H2N-BDC=2-aminoterephthalic acid, MIL=Materials of Institut Lavoisier) were prepared using a direct anionic exchange approach and subsequent reduction with NaBH4. The Pd/MIL-53(Al)-NH2 catalyst exhibitted high activity and good stability for Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction.

Abstract:We here report the synthesis, characterization and catalytic performance of new supported Pd(0) and Pd(II) catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by TEM, XRD, FT-IR, VSM and ICP. The catalysts were found to be active in both forms, Pd(0) and Pd(II), for hydrogenation and Suzuki cross-coupling reactions. In contrast to most supported catalysts, the newly developed catalysts were prepared using nearly the same synthetic strategy, and were easily recovered and recycled from the reaction mixture by applying an external magnet and reused in 5 cycles without significant loss in activity.
Well-Defined, Air- and Moisture-Stable Palladium-Imidazo[1,5- a]pyridin-3-ylidene Complexes: A Versatile Catalyst Platform for Cross-Coupling Reactions by L-Shaped NHC Ligands

Abstract:We describe the development of [(NHC)Pd(cinnamyl)Cl] complexes of ImPy (ImPy = imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene) as a versatile class of precatalysts for cross-coupling reactions. These precatalysts feature fast activation to monoligated Pd(0) with 1:1 Pd to ligand ratio in a rigid imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene template. Steric matching of the C5-substituent and N2-wingtip in the catalytic pocket of the catalyst framework led to the discovery of ImPyMesDipp as a highly reactive imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene ligand for Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling of nitroarenes by challenging C-NO2 activation. Kinetic studies demonstrate fast activation and high reactivity of this class of well-defined ImPy-Pd catalysts. Structural studies provide full characteristics of this new class of imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene ligands. Computational studies establish electronic properties of sterically-restricted imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene ligands. Finally, a scalable synthesis of C5-substituted imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene ligands through Ni-catalyzed Kumada cross-coupling is disclosed. The method obviates chromatographic purification at any of the steps, resulting in a facile and modular access to ImPy ligands. We anticipate that well-defined [Pd-ImPy] complexes will find broad utility in organic synthesis and catalysis for activation of unreactive bonds.
Structural Reassignment of Covalent Organic Framework-Supported Palladium Species: Heterogenized Palladacycles as Efficient Catalysts for Sustainable C-H Activation

Abstract:Recent decades have witnessed remarkable progress in ligand-promoted C-H activation with palladium catalysts. While a number of transformations have been achieved with a fairly broad substrate scope, the general requirements for high palladium loadings and enormous challenges in catalyst recycling severely limit the practical applications of C-H activation methodologies in organic synthesis. Herein, we incorporate N,C-ligand-chelated palladacycles into rigid, porous, and crystalline covalent organic frameworks for the C-H arylation of indole and pyrrole derivatives. These heterogeneous palladium catalysts exhibit superior stability and recyclability compared to their homogeneous counterparts. We not only produce several highly reactive palladacycles embedded on new framework supports to facilitate C-H activation/C-C bond-forming reactions but also reassign heterogenized palladium species on frameworks containing a benzaldehyde-derived imine moiety as imine-based palladacycles via comprehensive characterization. Our findings provide guidance for the rational design of framework-supported metallacycles in the development of heterogeneous transition-metal catalysis.
