Abstract:The emergence of porous organic polymers (POPs) has provided great opportunities for new applications in heterogeneous catalysis owing to their unprecedented intrinsic structural features such as high surface areas, extraordinary framework stabilities and chemically adjustable compositions. In this tutorial review, representative recent developments in the POPs-based catalysts with hierarchically porous structures are presented. Various strategies for the syntheses of hierarchically porous polymers including hard-templating, soft-templating and template-free approaches and the design of catalytically active porous polymers including post-modification, co-polymerization and self-polymerization have been discussed. In addition, their catalytic properties are compared. Finally, we emphasize the importance of the synthesis of hierarchically porous polymer based heterogeneous catalysts using sustainable routes under template-free and metal-free conditions.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs), which feature high surface areas and designable pore walls, have attracted much attention recently as a result of combining the advantages of both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. Because of the diversity of chemical reactions, one could design polymer frameworks with unique functionalities used as active sites and ligands in catalysis. In the view of green chemistry, this perspective is focused mainly on rational preparation of the porous organic polymers under metal-free conditions and their applications in heterogeneous catalysis. It is observed that many POP-based heterogeneous catalysts demonstrate superior catalytic properties, even better than the homogeneous counterparts. The strategies for designing highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts are briefly assessed.

Abstract:The development of porous composite materials is of great significance for their potentially improved performance over those of individual components and extensive applications in separation, energy storage, and heterogeneous catalysis. Now mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with macroporous melamine foam (MF) have been integrated using a one-pot process, generating a series of MOF/MF composite materials with preserved crystallinity, hierarchical porosity, and increased stability over that of melamine foam. The MOF nanocrystals were threaded by the melamine foam networks, resembling a ball-and-stick model overall. The resulting MOF/MF composite materials were employed as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the epoxidation of cholesteryl esters. Combining the advantages of interpenetrative mesoporous and macroporous structures, the MOF/melamine foam composite has higher dispersibility and more accessibility of catalytic sites, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs) featured with high surface areas, large pore volumes, and extraordinary thermal and chemical stabilities, have attracted much attention. In the beginning, POPs were mainly constructed from metal catalysts involving C-C coupling reactions. Recently, efficient solvothermal polymerization of POPs from organic monomers with double bonds has been developed. Because of the universality and diversity of monomer polymerization, a series of targeted active sites can be precisely incorporated into porous polymers. By taking advantage of the versatility of the design and the conditions employed for the fabrication of polymers, both the composition and porosity of POPs could be effectively tailored. This survey will focus on recent developments of strategies for the design of porous polymers as efficient heterogeneous catalysts from co-polymerization of skeleton molecules with functional groups to self-polymerization of functional organic groups. These porous organic polymers with unique features offer a good opportunity to deploy highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Hyper-crosslinked porous organic nanomaterials, especially the hyper-crosslinked polymers (HCPs), are a unique class of materials that combine the benefits of high surface area, porous structure, and good chemical and thermal stability all rolled into one. A wide range of synthetic methods offer an enormous variety of HCPs with different pore structures and morphologies, which has allowed HCPs to be developed for gas adsorption and separations, chemical adsorption and encapsulation, and heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we present a systematic review of recent approaches to pore size modulation and morphological tailoring of HCPs and their applications to catalysis. We mainly compare the effects of pore size modulation and morphological tailoring on catalytic applications, aiming to pave the way for researchers to develop HCPs with an optimal performance for modern applications.

Abstract:This article presents a one-pot method to synthesize hierarchically ordered porous carbons with interconnected macropores and mespores, via in situ self-assembly of colloidal polymer and silica spheres with sucrose as the carbon source. Compared with other techniques, this procedure is veritably simple; neither presynthesis of the macropore/mesopore or crystal templates nor additional infiltration is needed, and the self-assembly of polymer spheres into the crystal template and the infiltration are finished in situ in the same system. The sizes of macropores and mesopores can be independently tuned by the sizes of polymer and silica spheres, respectively. The obtained bimodal porous carbons have large BET surface areas, large pore volumes, and partially graphitized frameworks. They show very good support of the Pt−Ru alloy catalyst in a direct methanol fuel cell.

Abstract:The structure of enzyme catalytic centers often guides the synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts. These structures are dynamic and provide changes in the chemical environment and redox state of transition metal centers that result in drastic changes in the catalytic behavior. Inspired by these catalytic traits, porous polymers represent a versatile platform for preparing catalysts by anchoring metals to organic functional groups. Following this inspiration, we studied the structural evolution of a series of catalysts containing atomically dispersed Cu ions grafted onto imine-linked porous organic frameworks (IPOFs) during synthesis and reaction. Cu species were found to be bound to the imine or diiminopyridine units of IPOFs and to be active for oxidation of carbon monoxide. Combining X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) showed that the metal centers could gradually activate oxygen and change their oxidation state. Interestingly, depending on the type of functional group responsible for binding Cu, the active sites either reach a balanced redox turnover between Cu(I) and Cu(II) states or get poisoned by CO and locked at a Cu(I) state during reaction. Furthermore, samples with agglomerated Cu species were found to be redispersed upon contact with the reaction mixture, which promoted a high initial activity not seen in the original samples. Abstract:We reported a universal route for synthesizing porous organic ligands (POLs) via solvothermal polymerization. The POLs were obtained quantitatively, showing high surface area, large pore volume, hierarchical porosity, and superior stability. The POL bearing a triphenylphosphine supported rhodium catalyst (Rh/POL-PPh3) exhibits high activity and excellent recyclability in 1-octene hydroformylation.

Abstract:Nature has served as a dominant source of inspiration in the area of chemistry, serving as prototypes for the design of materials with proficient performance. In this account, we present our effort to explore porous organic polymers (POPs) as a platform for the construction of biomimetic catalysts to enable new technologies to achieve efficient conversions. For each aspect, we firstly describe the chemical basis of nature, followed by presenting the principles and design strategies involved for functionalizing POPs along with a summary of critical requirements for materials, culminating in a demonstration of unique features of POPs. Our endeavors of using POPs to address the fundamental scientific problems related to biomimetic catalysis are then presented to show their enormous potential and capabilities for a wide range of catalytic transformations. To conclude, a personal perspective on the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field are presented.

Abstract:This study is aimed at booming intelligent catalysts, suggesting a bio-inspired polymer catalyst with catalytic substrate-sieving ability. By mimicking the hierarchical multi-level structures in biopolymers, this polymer catalyst was fabricated with metal nanoparticles and double "zipper" conformations individually made of polymeric hydrogen bonds and complexing interactions. Owing to the discrepant strength of both interactions against temperature, the double zipper conformations led to a hierarchical disruption of the two interactions and the stepwise disaggregation of the polymeric networks and as a result the substrate-sieving ability. This catalyst didn't present effective catalysis at low temperatures because of the blocked networks. With the increasing temperatures, this catalyst would first present catalysis towards small molecules of substrate and then further towards bigger molecules of substrate, by virtue of the hierarchical disruption of the weaker hydrogen bonds and the stronger complexing interactions. In this way, this catalyst assumed the substrate-sieving ability. The protocol of this catalyst suggests a prospect to modulate the catalytic proceedings, particularly for complicated processes.

In article number 1905950, Tao Tu and co-workers describe the preparation of porous organometallic polymers with atomically dispersed metal centers and hierarchical pores by direct knitting of privileged N-heterocyclic metal complexes. Dramatically enhanced catalytic activity (750 times higher) and selectivity in both dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions is demonstrated.

Abstract:The review discusses recent advances in hierarchical porous structure MOFs and their derived materials. It covers design, synthesis, and applications in optics, sensors, catalysis, and energy storage. The importance of 3DOM structures in enhancing mass and charge transfer in electrochemical reactions is highlighted. The review concludes with suggested challenges and prospects for 3DOM porous structure materials. Hierarchical porous materials have attracted the attention of researchers due to their enormous specific surface area, maximized active site utilization efficiency, and unique structure and properties. In this context, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a unique mix of properties that make them particularly appealing as tunable porous substrates containing highly active sites. This review focuses on recent advances in the types and synthetic strategies of hierarchical porous MOFs and their derived materials. Furthermore, it highlights the relationship between the mass diffusion and transport of hierarchical porous structures and the pore size with examples and simulations, while identifying their potential and limitations. On this basis, how the synthesis conditions affect the structure and electrochemical properties of MOFs based hierarchical porous materials with different structures is discussed, highlighting the prospects and challenges for the synthetization, as well as further scientific research and practical applications. Finally, some insights into current research and future design ideas for advanced MOFs based hierarchical porous materials are presented.

Abstract:In this work we demonstrate for the first time the construction of a hierarchical porous ionic organic polymer via the polymerization of the vinyl-functionalized quaternary phosphonium salt monomer under solvothermal conditions. The resultant polymerized quaternary phosphonium (PQP) salt features a hierarchical porous structure and excellent amphiphilicity. After anion-exchange with peroxotungstate, the afforded W2O11/PQP demonstrates excellent performances as a heterogeneous phase-transfer catalyst in the context of epoxidation of olefin and oxidation of dibenzothiophene when using the environmentally benign H2O2 as the oxidant, superior to the homogeneous counterparts and other types of phase-transfer catalysts. Our work thereby paves a way to advance hierarchical porous ionic organic polymers as a new type of platform for heterogeneous phase transfer catalysis.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (H-MOFs) with micro-, meso- and macropores have emerged as a popular class of crystalline porous materials that have attracted extensive interests, and they have been studied in diverse applications, especially in heterogeneous catalysis. The hierarchical structures enable sufficient diffusion and accessibility to the active sites of the molecules and permit the encapsulation of catalytic guest molecules to exploit more possibilities with enhanced catalytic performance. In this review, we have summarized the recent representative developments of H-MOFs in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, which includes oxidation reaction, hydrogenation reaction, and condensation reaction. Emphasis is placed on the multiple functions of hierarchical structures, and the catalytic activity, selectivity, stability, recyclability, etc. of the industrial utility of H-MOFs. Finally, the prospects and challenges of H-MOFs in heterogeneous catalysis and the remaining issues in this field are presented.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous carbons (HPCs) with multimodal pore systems exhibit great technological potentials, especially in the fields of heterogeneous catalysis, energy storage, and conversion. Here, we establish a simple and general approach to HPCs by carbonization of nonporous coordination polymers that are produced by mixing metal salts with polytopic ligands in alkaline aqueous solutions at room temperature. The proposed approach is applicable to a wide scope of ligand molecules (18 examples), thus affording the synthesized HPCs with high diversity in porosity, morphology, and composition. In particular, the prepared HPCs exhibit high specific surface areas (up to 2647 m2 g-1) and large pore volumes (up to 2.39 cm3 g-1). The HPCs-supported atomically dispersed Fe-Nx catalysts show much-improved fuel cell cathode performance over the micropore-dominated carbon black-supported catalysts, demonstrating the structural superiority of the HPCs for enhancing the mass transport properties.
3D-Printing of Hierarchical Porous Copper-Based Metal-Organic-Framework Structures for Efficient Fixed-Bed Catalysts

Abstract:Metallic structures with hierarchical open pores that span several orders of magnitude are ideal candidates for various catalyst applications. However, porous metal materials prepared using alloy/dealloy methods still struggle to achieve continuous pore distribution across a broad size range. Herein, we report a printable copper (Cu)/iron (Fe) composite ink that produces a hierarchical porous Cu material with pores spanning over 4 orders of magnitude. The manufacturing process involves four steps: 3D-printing, annealing, dealloying, and reannealing. Because of the unique annealing process, the resulting hierarchical pore surface becomes coated with a layer of Cu-Fe alloy. This feature imparts remarkable catalytic ability and versatile functionality within fixed bed reactors for 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction and Friedländer cyclization. Specifically, for 4-NP reduction, the porous Cu catalyst demonstrates an excellent reaction rate constant (kapp = 86.5 × 10-3 s-1) and a wide adaptability of the substrate (up to 1.26 mM), whilst for Friedländer cyclization, a conversion over 95% within a retention time of only 20 min can be achieved by metal-organic-framework-decorated porous Cu catalyst. The utilization of dual metallic particles as printable inks offers valuable insights for fabricating hierarchical porous metallic structures for applications, such as advanced fixed-bed catalysts.

Abstract:As a new group of hierarchical materials, hierarchically porous metals not only present high accessibility of matter molecules, but also provide unique continuous metallic frameworks for greatly enhancing electron mobility and utilization. This review summarizes the most commonly used synthesis strategies to produce hierarchically porous metals and discusses how this hierarchy impacts on structure–function for applications in catalysis, energy, and sensing. Hierarchically porous metals possess intriguing high accessibility of matter molecules and unique continuous metallic frameworks, as well as a high level of exposed active atoms. High rates of diffusion and fast energy transfer have been important and challenging goals of hierarchical design and porosity control with nanostructured metals. This review aims to summarize recent important progress toward the development of hierarchically porous metals, with special emphasis on synthetic strategies, hierarchical design in structure–function and corresponding applications. The current challenges and future prospects in this field are also discussed.
