Abstract:A highly efficient and reusable catalyst, palladium (II) complex supported on functionalized silica, was prepared by anchoring palladium (II) onto 2,6-bis(5,6-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazine-3-yl)pyridine [BTP]-modified mesoporous silica (labeled as Pd-BTP/SiO2). The catalyst was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) analysis. Its catalytic performance was tested for the Heck coupling reactions between aryl halides with acrylic acid or styrene, and good to excellent results (higher conversions 87–96% and yields 66–78%) were obtained. The catalyst system was stable under the reaction conditions and could be successfully reused more than five times without the loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract:The synthesis of a polyethylene (PE) gel containing self-incarcerated palladium(0) nanoparticles is described. The PE gel matrix without any special functionality was synthesized by one-pot chain walking copolymerization of ethylene and 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate facilitated by a Pd-diimine complex (1). The Pd(II) species from 1 were immobilized in situ onto the gel matrix and further reduced to Pd(0) nanoparticles as a result of catalyst 1 deactivation during polymerization and methanol (a reducer) washing in the polymer purification process. The resulting Pd-containing PE gel (2) is shown to be a high-performance and facilely reusable heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck and Suzuki coupling reactions of iodobenzene or aryl bromides. An average TOF of 460 h(-1) was achieved with an average 0.57 ppm Pd leaching in each cycle of the Heck reaction of iodobenzene when the PE gel 2 was recycled 10 times. A maximum TOF of 3.33 x 104 h-(1) was reached and less than 0.64 ppm of Pd was leached in the Suzuki reactions of aryl bromides with water as solvent.

Abstract:Two series of amine-functionalized Zr-based mixed-linker metal-organic frameworks (MOFs; UiO-66-Mix and UiO-67-Mix) have been synthesized with different ratios of 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate/2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and 4,4-biphenyldicarboxylic acid/2-amino-biphenyl-4,4-dicarboxylic acid incorporated into their structures. The pendant amino groups were postmodified by the condensation reaction with pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde, and Pd metal centers were anchored onto the MOFs by coordination to the pyridylimine moieties. The two series of heterogeneous Pd catalysts (UiO-66-Mix-PI-Pd and UiO-67-Mix-PI-Pd) were utilized for the Suzuki and Heck cross-coupling reactions in ethanol/water under mild reaction conditions and they showed a remarkably high catalytic activity. The porosity of the MOFs and the density of the metal binding sites of the Pd catalysts had great influence on the Suzuki and Heck cross-coupling reactions. The best results were achieved with a very low Pd loading (0.054mol%), and the use of UiO-67-3-PI-Pd catalyst led to the complete conversion of reaction substrates. Moreover, the catalysts were readily recovered and recycled in at least 10cycles without significant leaching or loss of catalytic activity. The catalysts were generally applicable for different reaction substrates with various substituents in both Suzuki and Heck reactions.
An efficient chitosan-derived carbon/silica microspheres supported Pd catalyst with high stability for Heck reactions

Abstract:To maintain stability and activity in Heck-coupling reaction, a novel composite carrier with controllable uniform size, high complex ability and mechanical intensity was fabricated in microchannel using natural N-doped biomolecule chitosan and silica as ingredients. Post carbonization increased its thermal stability and supported Pd@C/silica catalysts can be acquired after Pd loading. Only 2mg supported Pd@C/silica catalysts (0.44μmol) can achieve high yield (>95%) in a typical Heck-coupling reaction and maintained activity even after 8 times of recycling. This type of novel porous microspheres carrier can cut down the usage of noble Pd by avoiding the leaching as well as aggregation of Pd nanoparticles, and could be widely applied in similar chemical reactions.

Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:BackgroundDevelopment of more efficient catalysts for Heck reaction is an urgent task. Traditionally, palladium-based catalysts have played an important role in the construction of the CC bonds in the Heck reaction.MethodsBy using layered phosphate (α-ZrP) as the host material, a novel composite Pd@ZrP is prepared by assembling the precursor Pd(NH3)42+ with the exfoliated α-ZrP nanosheets followed by in-situ reduction. The Pd nanoparticles (NPs) with an average diameter of 5.17 nm are uniformly dispersed on the surface of the α-ZrP nanosheets, and their particle sizes ranged from 3 to 7 nm. The catalytic performance of the prepared Pd@ZrP composite is evaluated by selecting the Heck reaction of iodobenzene and methyl acrylate as a model reaction.Significant findingsThe Pd@ZrP composite exhibits excellent catalytic efficiency, achieving 95.8% conversion within 30 min and a conversion frequency (TOF) value of 937.3 h–1 at 100 °C. The reaction conditions are optimized in terms of the catalyst amount, the reaction time and temperature. In addition, the composite can be easily recovered by centrifugation and reused five times without a significant decrease in catalytic activity. The superior catalytic behaviors can be attributed to Pd NPs uniformly distributed on the surface of α-ZrP nanosheets, as well as the large specific surface area and the porous structure of Pd@ZrP composite.

Abstract:<p>Chitin derived from seafood wastes is a sustainable biopolymer, which can be used to constructe new materials to reduce the environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable plastics. Herein, nanofibrous microspheres fabricated from chitin solution were used as carriers to construct three different chitin-supported Pd catalysts through diverse activation methods, subsequently revealed their differences in structure and performance. The palladium nanoparticles were firmly and highly dispersed on the microspheres due to the interconnected nanofibrous networks and functional groups of chitin, confirmed by various physicochemical characterizations. As the best candidate catalyst of Pd/chitin-Ar, in the CO oxidation reaction, which achieved 100% CO conversion with a lower Pd content, and exhibited excellent stability in 24-hours cycle reaction. Importantly, the catalyst was further applied in Heck coupling reaction, which also displayed competitive catalytic activity and stability (∼6runs, 94%). This utilizing of biomass resource to build catalyst materials would be important for the sustainable chemistry.</p>

Abstract:Immobilization of highly monodispersed palladium nanoparticles in colloidal mesoporous silica supports has been successfully achieved. The Pd nanoparticles with a uniform small size of ∼1.2 nm can be homogeneously distributed in individual mesopore channels of amino group-functionalized three-dimensional dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres (3D-dendritic MSNSs) with a Pd content of ∼2.8%. The 3D-dendritic MSNSs-based nanoreactors show high activity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of bromobenzene with phenylboronic acid, obtaining a yield over 99% with 0.075 mol % Pd catalyst at room temperature in the dark within 12 h. More importantly, the excellent catalytic performance can be maintained with a negligible decrease lasting at least six cycles. It further reveals that the mesoporous frameworks of the colloidal silica supports can be well-preserved after four catalytic runs; meanwhile, the Pd nanoparticles in the mesopore channels also can remain the sizes of 1.5±0.3 nm without significant transfer and aggregation. The unique mesostructure of the 3D-dendritic MSNSs with mesopore channels of short length and large diameter is supposed to be the key role in immobilization of active and robust heterogeneous catalysts, and it would have more hopeful prospects in catalytic applications.

Abstract:We describe here a method to stabilize Pd(0) on the surface of hollow magnetic mesoporous spheres (HMMS), with Fe3O4 nanoparticles embedded in the mesoporous shell. The catalyst was characterized using TEM, XRD, VSM, BET and XPS. The catalyst afforded fast conversion for various aromatic nitro and unsaturated compounds in ethanol under an H2 atmosphere even at room temperature. The catalyst showed an efficient hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds rather than nitro compounds. Furthermore it was found that the catalyst also exhibited a high activity in the Suzuki coupling reaction. The catalyst could be recovered in a facile manner from the reaction mixture and recycled six times without any loss in activity.
Enhanced Catalytic Activity and Thermal Stability by Highly Dispersed Pd-based Nanocatalysts Embedded in ZrO2 Hollow Spheres

Abstract:Sintering resistant noble metal nanoparticles are critical to the development of advanced catalysts with high activity and stability. Herein, we reported the construction of highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles loaded at the inner wall of ZrO2 hollow spheres (Pd@HS-ZrO2), which shows improved activity and thermal stability over references in the Pd-ZrO2 (catalyst-support) system. Even after 800 °C high temperature calcination, the Pd nanoparticles and ZrO2 hollow spheres did not undergo morphological changes. The Pd@HS-ZrO2 manifests batter catalytic activity and thermal stability than the counterpart Pd/ZrO2 catalysts. In comparison to Pd/ZrO2-800, Pd@ZrO2-800 exhibits a 25°C reduction in the temperature required for complete conversion of CO. The enhanced catalytic activity and thermal stability of Pd@HS-ZrO2 can be attributed to the nanoconfinement effect offered by the 10 nm wall thickness of the ZrO2 hollow spheres, which suppresses the coarsening of the Pd nanoparticles (active center for catalysis).

Abstract:Single-atom catalysis has become a new branch in heterogeneous catalysis. Although the naturally produced SiO2-based materials are abundant and stable, fabrication of single-atom catalysts on such supports with high loading remains as a formidable challenge due to the lack of bonding sites to anchor the isolated metal species. Herein, modifying the diatomite, a kind of pure SiO2 mineral, with CeO2 nanoparticles is demonstrated to increase the defect sites on the support. The enhanced metal-support interaction maintains the atomic dispersion of Pt species with above 1 wt.% loading, exhibiting good performance in the selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene to styrene.

Abstract:A facile one-step hydrothermal approach was proposed to fabricate Pd nano-particles decorated Mg–Al layered double hydroxide nanosheets (denoted as Pd NPs/Mg–Al LDH composite), wherein polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) functioned as both a reductant and stabilizer. The resulting samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and BET techniques. The effect of synthetic parameters during the hydrothermal reaction including PVP dosage and temperature on the size and distribution of Pd NPs was investigated in details. Pd nanoparticles with an average particle size of 3.6 nm were uniformly supported onto Mg–Al LDH nanosheets under the optimal conditions. The obtained Pd NPs/Mg–Al LDH composite could serve as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck reaction between iodobenzene and methyl acrylate, achieving a high yield of 95.8% within 60 min at 100 °C. Abstract:A facile strategy to prepare sintering- and leaching-resistant core-shell nanocatalysts is reported. ZIF-derived porous carbon supported Pd nanoparticles are coated with a mesoporous silica shell, preventing Pd nanoparticles from sintering at high temperature and leaching in a catalytic process. This nanocatalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and recyclability for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol.

Abstract:Single-atom (SA) catalysis bridging homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis offers new opportunities for organic synthesis, but developing SA catalysts with high activity and stability is still a great challenge. Herein, a heterogeneous catalyst of Pd SAs anchored in 3D ordered macroporous ceria (Pd-SAs/3DOM-CeO2 ) is developed through a facile template-assisted pyrolysis method. The high specific surface area of 3DOM CeO2 facilitates the heavily anchoring of Pd SAs, while the introduction of Pd atoms induces the generation of surface oxygen vacancies and prevents the grain growth of CeO2 support. The Pd-SAs/3DOM-CeO2 catalyst exhibits excellent activity toward Suzuki coupling reactions for a broad scope of substrates under ambient conditions, and the Pd SAs can be stabilized in CeO2 in long-term catalytic cycles without leaching or aggregating. Theoretical calculations indicate that the CeO2 supported Pd SAs can remarkably reduce the energy barriers of both transmetalation and reductive elimination steps for Suzuki coupling reactions. The strong metal-support interaction contributes to modulating the electronic state and maintaining the stability of Pd SA sites. This work demonstrates an effective strategy to design and synthesize stable single-atom catalysts as well as sheds new light on the origin for enhanced catalysis based on the strong metal-support interactions.
TiO2-Modified Montmorillonite-Supported Porous Carbon-Immobilized Pd Species Nanocomposite as an Efficient Catalyst for Sonogashira Reactions

Abstract:In this study, a combination of the porous carbon (PCN), montmorillonite (MMT), and TiO2 was synthesized into a composite immobilized Pd metal catalyst (TiO2-MMT/PCN@Pd) with effective synergism improvements in catalytic performance. The successful TiO2-pillaring modification for MMT, derivation of carbon from the biopolymer of chitosan, and immobilization of Pd species for the prepared TiO2-MMT/PCN@Pd0 nanocomposites were confirmed using a combined characterization with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, high-resolution transition electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. It was shown that the combination of PCN, MMT, and TiO2 as a composite support for the stabilization of the Pd catalysts could synergistically improve the adsorption and catalytic properties. The resultant TiO2-MMT80/PCN20@Pd0 showed a high surface area of 108.9 m2/g. Furthermore, it exhibited moderate to excellent activity (59-99% yield) and high stability (recyclable 19 times) in the liquid-solid catalytic reactions, such as the Sonogashira reactions of aryl halides (I, Br) with terminal alkynes in organic solutions. The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) characterization sensitively detected the development of sub-nanoscale microdefects in the catalyst after long-term recycling service. This study provided direct evidence for the formation of some larger-sized microdefects during sequential recycling, which would act as leaching channels for loaded molecules, including active Pd species.

Abstract:Novel pillared montmorillonite encaging porous chitosan derived activated N-doped carbon-supported Pd nanoparticles catalyst (Pd@Al, Fe-Mt/N-C) was synthesized by ion-exchange of the chitosan/Pd precursors into the layered-nanospaces of Al, Fe-pillared montmorillonite and subsequent confinement carbonization. N2 adsorption-desorption study indicated that the resulting nanocomposites have rich mesoporous structures. Effective encagement and in-situ reduction of Pd species led to a decrease in surface area and N2 adsorption, respectively. TEM images of the prepared Pd@Al, Fe-Mt/N-C showed that most of the Pd species with a size of 1–3 nm were well dispersed in the interlayer spaces of the pillared montmorillonite. The catalysts showed high catalytic efficiency for the Sonogashira reactions of aryl iodides or bromides with terminal aryl alkynes, and can be recycled 20 runs with no significant loss of activities. The unique encagement of the porous carbon-supported metal catalysts in the layered nanospaces of pillared montmorillonite was further elucidated by the positron annihilation spectroscopy analysis and other structural characterization methods. This layered-nanospace confinement strategy achieves a perfect combination of the advantages of activated carbon and montmorillonite as metal nanoparticle carrier.

Abstract:Embedding Pd nanoparticles in carbon thin film-lined SBA-15 nanoreactors provides highly efficient catalysts for heterogeneous cross coupling reactions in aqueous media. No leaching or aggregation of Pd nanoparticles was found in these nanoreactors after reusing them several times. The carbon thin film lining of these nanoreactors was further confirmed with small molecular arene probing experiments.

Abstract:For developing efficient and practical catalysts to achieve controllable hydrogen evolution from chemical hydrogen storage material, we herein demonstrate a seed-mediated stepwise reduction and tunable dispersion protocol to fabricate porous silica supported Ag core - Pd shell composites (Pd@Ag/SiO2) with serial metal molar ratios. By reasonable regulation for reduction sequence and growing conditions, the Pd@Ag bimetal layered nanostructure could be piloted to take orderly shape; via adjusting addition time and dosage for the reactants and additives, the resultant Pd@Ag nanoagents can be firmly attached on porous silica. The little by little assembled nanoagents with mean size of 10 nm on the silica microspheres construct a loose and porous secondary microstructure, leading to increment of specific surface area to some degrees. The generation of electron synergistic effect among the metals and carrier, verified by the XPS analysis, contributes to boosting the catalytic ability. The catalytic activity of the bimetal composites all exceed that of mono-metal composites, of which the bimetal composite Pd0.75@Ag0.25/SiO2 holds the top catalytic ability, even beyond that of Pd/SiO2 or Pd-NPs, followed by Pd0.5@Ag0.5/SiO2 and Pd0.25@Ag0.75/SiO2. The AB hydrolysis catalyzed by Pd0.75@Ag0.25/SiO2 at the given temperatures (293 to 313 K) is validated to be a first-order reaction, with apparent activation energy of 42.46 kJ·mol−1 and TOF value of 109.99 min−1. The catalyst Pd0.75@Ag0.25/SiO2 presents satisfactory stability, still retaining 83.2 % initial catalytic activity after five repeated use.

Abstract:Palladium nanocatalysts were highly dispersed on surface-oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by the microwave-assisted reduction of PdCl2 solution. These catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The catalytic properties of the Pd/MWCNTs catalysts for Heck reaction were examined and the conditions such as reaction temperature, kind of base, and dosage of base were optimized. The results indicate that Pd/MWCNTs catalysts present good catalytic activity for Heck reaction.
