Abstract:hypersurface x : M → S n +1 without umbilic point is called a Möbius isoparametric hypersurface if its Möbius form Φ = − ρ −2 ∑ i ( e i ( H ) + ∑ j ( h ij − Hδ ij ) e j (log ρ )) θ i vanishes and its Möbius shape operator S = ρ −1 ( S − H id) has constant eigenvalues. Here e i is a local orthonormal basis for I = dx · dx with dual basis θ i , II = ∑ ij h ij θ i ⊗ θ i is the second fundamental form, H = 1 n∑_i h_ii ,ρ^2 = n n - 1( || II ||^2 - nH^2 ) and S is the shape operator of x . It is clear that any conformal image of a (Euclidean) isoparametric hypersurface in S n +1 is a Möbius isoparametric hypersurface, but the converse is not true. In this paper we classify all Möbius isoparametric hypersurfaces in S n +1 with two distinct principal curvatures up to Möbius transformations. By using a theorem of Thorbergsson [1] we also show that the number of distinct principal curvatures of a compact Möbius isoparametric hypersurface embedded in S n +1 can take only the values 2, 3, 4, 6.

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

A classical theorem of Möbius geometry states that M n (n ≥ 3) is in fact characterized by g and B up to Möbius equivalence. A Möbius isoparametric hypersurface is defined by satisfying two conditions: (1) Φ ≡ 0; (2) All the eigenvalues of B with respect to g are constants. Note that Euclidean isoparametric hypersurfaces are automatically Möbius isoparametrics, whereas the latter are Dupin hypersurfaces.

Abstract:Let $M^n$ be a closed Riemannian manifold on which the integral of the scalar curvature is nonnegative. Suppose $\mathfrak{a}$ is a symmetric $(0,2)$ tensor field whose dual $(1,1)$ tensor $\mathcal{A}$ has $n$ distinct eigenvalues, and $\mathrm{tr}(\mathcal{A}^k)$ are constants for $k=1,\cdots, n-1$. We show that all the eigenvalues of $\mathcal{A}$ are constants, generalizing a theorem of de Almeida and Brito \cite{dB90} to higher dimensions. As a consequence, a closed hypersurface $M^n$ in $S^{n+1}$ is isoparametric if one takes $\mathfrak{a}$ above to be the second fundamental form, giving affirmative evidence to Chern's conjecture.

Abstract:Let $x:{\bf M}^m\rightarrow {\bf S}^{m+1}$ be a hypersurface in the (m+1)-dimensional unit sphere S m+1 without umbilics. Four basic invariants of x under the Möbius transformation group in S m+1 are a Riemannian metric g called Möbius metric, a 1-form Φ called Möbius form, a symmetric (0,2) tensor A called Blaschke tensor and symmetric (0,2) tensor B called Möbius second fundamental form. In this paper, we prove the following classification theorem: let $x:{\bf M}^m\rightarrow {\bf S}^{m+1}$ be a hypersurface, which satisfies (i) Φ≡0, (ii) A+λg+μB≡0 for some functions λ and μ, then λ and μ must be constant, and x is Möbius equivalent to either (i) a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in S m+1 ; or (ii) the pre-image of a stereographic projection of a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in the Euclidean space R m+1 ; or (iii) the image of the standard conformal map of a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in the (m+1)-dimensional hyperbolic space H m+1 . This result shows that one can use Möbius differential geometry to unify the three different classes of hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in S m+1 , R m+1 and H m+1 .

Abstract:In this paper we show that a Dupin hypersurface with constant Möbius curvatures is Möbius equivalent to either an isoparametric hypersurface in the sphere or a cone over an isoparametric hypersurface in a sphere. We also show that a Dupin hypersurface with constant Laguerre curvatures is Laguerre equivalent to a flat Laguerre isoparametric hypersurface. These results solve the major issues related to the conjectures of Cecil et al on the classification of Dupin hypersurfaces.

Abstract:We study isoparametric hypersurfaces, whose principal curvatures are all constant, in the pseudo-Riemannian space forms. In this paper, we investigate three topics.Firstly, according to Petrov's classification theorem, we give a classification of hypersurfaces of index 2 with respect to a pair of a shape operator and a metric. Therefore, we can define types of isoparametric hypersurfaces of index 2 concerning the classification. Secondly, we give several examples of certain types. Thirdly, we show that there exist no isoparametric hypersurfaces of index 2 whose shape operators have complex principal curvatures in certain cases.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{M}(\mathbb{S}^{n+1})$ denote the Möbius transformation group of the $(n+1)$-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$. A hypersurface $x:M^n\to \mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ is called a Möbius homogeneous hypersurface if there exists a subgroup $G$ of $\mathbb{M}(\mathbb{S}^{n+1})$ such that the orbit $G\cdot p=x(M^n), p\in x(M^n)$. In this paper, the Möbius homogeneous hypersurfaces are classified completely up to a Möbius transformation of $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$.

Abstract:Let x : M-m --> S-n be a submanifold in the n-dimensional sphere S' without umbilics. Two basic invariants of x under the Mobius transformation group in S' are a I-form 0 called the Mobius form and a symmetric (0, 2) tensor A called the Blaschke tensor. x is said to be Mobius isotropic in S-n if Phi = 0 and A = lambdadx (.) dx for some smooth function lambda. An interesting property for a Mobius isotropic submanifold is that its conformal Gauss map is harmonic. The main result in this paper is the classification of Mobius isotropic submanifolds in S-n. We show that (i) if lambda > 0, then x is Mobius equivalent to a minimal submanifold with constant scalar curvature in S-n; (ii) if lambda = 0, then x is Mobius equivalent to the preimage of a stereographic projection of a minimal submanifold with constant scalar curvature in the n-dimensional Euclidean space R-n; (iii) if lambda < 0, then x is Mobius equivalent to the image of the standard conformal map tau : H-n --> S-+(n) of a minimal submanifold with constant scalar curvature in the n-dimensional hyperbolic space H-n. This result shows that one can use Mobius differential geometry to unify the three different classes of minimal submanifolds with constant scalar curvature in S-n, R-n and H-n.
Isoparametric hypersurfaces in symmetric spaces of non-compact type and higher rank

Abstract:We construct inhomogeneous isoparametric families of hypersurfaces with non-austere focal set on each symmetric space of non-compact type and rank greater than or equal to 3. If the rank is greater than or equal to 4, there are infinitely many such examples. Our construction yields the first examples of isoparametric families on any Riemannian manifold known to have a non-austere focal set. They can be obtained from a new general extension method of submanifolds from Euclidean spaces to symmetric spaces of non-compact type. This method preserves the mean curvature and isoparametricity, among other geometric properties.

Abstract:A hypersurface $M^n$ in a real space form ${\bf R}^{n+1}$, $S^{n+1}$, or $H^{n+1}$ is isoparametric if it has constant principal curvatures. This paper is a survey of the fundamental work of Cartan and Münzner on the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces in real space forms, in particular, spheres. This work is contained in four papers of Cartan published during the period 1938--1940, and two papers of Münzner that were published in preprint form in the early 1970's, and as journal articles in 1980--1981. These papers of Cartan and Münzner have been the foundation of the extensive field of isoparametric hypersurfaces, and they have all been recently translated into English by the author. The paper concludes with a brief survey of the recently completed classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres.
