Abstract:Undoped and Mn-doped ZnO nanostructured thin films were deposited on the glass substrate at 400 °C via spray pyrolysis technique. Films crystallinity and morphology were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis, respectively. From the XRD analysis, it is seen that prepared thin film samples are polycrystalline in nature, having a structure of hexagonal wurtzite. Undoped and Mn-doped ZnO samples showed (002) preferred orientation. FESEM study shows nanoflake structure formation. Elemental characterization was performed by Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The elemental analysis results reveal the doping of manganese in Zinc oxide lattice. Also, an increase in doping percentages is clearly observed from the EDX spectra. It confirms the successful substitution of Mn in zinc oxide lattice. All the thin films samples were subjected to optical studies using UV–VIS spectroscopy. Transmittance data reveal a decrease in transmittance with an increase in dopant concentration. In addition, the Tauc's plot illustrates the decrease in energy bandgap values with an increase in Mn content in ZnO. Gas sensing performance has been studied for ethanol at room temperature for all samples at various gas concentrations (5 ppm to 200 ppm). The maximum response is shown by a 2% Mn-doped ZnO thin film sample. High stability and improved gas response values of 2% Mn-doped ZnO samples make it a competitive gas sensing material.

Abstract:ZnO and Mn-doped Zn 0.92 Y 0.08-x Mn x O (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06) nanoparticles were synthesized hydrothermally and thoroughly characterized structurally, morphologically, and optically. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed their crystalline wurtzite structure, with dopant concentration affecting lattice parameters, causing expansion or contraction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed Mn and Y integration into the ZnO matrix. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed morphological shifts from rods to flowers with increased Mn doping concentration . UV-visible absorption revealed optical band changes due to doping. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) identified Zn–O, Y-O, and Mn–O bonds. Photoluminescence (PL) indicated intensity shifts with doping, suggesting dopant influence on defect-related emissions. Doped ZnO nanoparticles displayed superior hydrogen gas sensing, especially x=0.04 at 250°C, attributed to smaller size and structural changes.

Abstract:The preparation of uniform single-phase Mn-doped ZnO nanofibers lays the foundation for constructing micro-spin-electronic devices. An electrospinning method was adopted to fabricate 5 kinds of Mn-doped ZnO nanofibers with different doping concentrations. The morphology and diameter distribution of as-prepared fibers before calcination could be controlled by varying applied voltage. XRD patterns demonstrate that all the 5 samples are of single wurtzite structure. PL spectra show that there are 2 light-emitting peaks within the spectrum range from 400 nm to 1000 nm and they both have a blue-shift as Mn element is doped into ZnO.

Abstract:The geometric structures, electronic and magnetic properties of Mn-doped ZnO nanowires were investigated using density functional theory. The results indicated that all the calculated energy differences were negative, and the energy of the ground state was 0.229 eV lower than ferromagnetic coupling, which show higher stability in antiferromagnetic coupling. The calculated results indicated that obvious spin splitting phenomenon occurred near the Femi level. The Zn atoms on the inner layer of ZnO nanowires are easily substituted by Mn atoms along the [0001] direction. It was also shown that the Mn2+-O2--Mn2+ magnetic coupling formed by intermediate O atom was proved to be caused by orbital hybridization between Mn 3d and O 2p states. The magnetic moments were mainly attributed to the unpaired Mn 3d orbitals, but not relevant with doping position of Mn atoms. Moreover, the optical properties of Mn-doped ZnO nanowires exhibited a novel blue-shifted optical absorption and enhanced ultraviolet-light emission. The above results show that the Mn-doped ZnO nanowires are a new type of magneto-optical materials with great promise.

Abstract:ZnO nanoparticles, nanorods and nanosheets were in-situ deposited on the interdigitated gold electrodes by hydrothermal treatment of electrospun nanofibers containing zinc salt precursors and seed-induced solution growth of ZnO. The nanostructured ZnO was further covered with polyaniline (PANI) via vapor phase polymerization of aniline or dip-coating with water-dispersible PANI to prepare ZnO/PANI nanocomposites. The morphology and structure of the nanocomposites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The electrical responses of the nanocomposites toward NH3 have been examined at room temperature, and the nanocomposite revealed much better gas sensing properties than ZnO or PANI alone. The morphology of the nanocomposites had a great effect on their sensing properties. Specifically, the composite of ZnO nanosheets covered with vapor phase polymerized aniline demonstrated optimal sensing performance, featuring high response magnitude (relevant resistance change of similar to 2150% towards NH3 as low as 10 ppm), ultralow limit of detection (similar to 5 ppb), good repeatability and excellent selectivity. It is proposed that the morphology and the interactions between p-type PANI and n-type ZnO are responsible for the highly desirable sensing properties of the nanocomposites. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Doped thin films are attractive for future sensors, solar cells, and optics materials. In the present study, Co and Mn co-doped ZnO thin-films were deposited on the glass substrate using the sol-gel spin coating method. Their structural and optical properties were investigated using XRD, SEM with EDX, UV–Vis, Photoluminescence (PL), FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy. The nanofiber-like structure obtained from the SEM images revealed that the co-doping effect created a stable structure on the film. The highest optical band was observed in the Z23 (2% Mn and 3% Co) sample with a value of 3.18 eV. The PL spectrum of ZnO thin films had a sharp emission peak centered at 379 cm−1 in the ultraviolet region and a broad excitation peak centered at 560 cm−1 in the visible range. The addition of Mn and Co to the ZnO host matrix caused the peak to split and degrade at 460 cm−1 in FTIR spectra. Raman spectra showed that Mn(II) and Co(II) metals are bonded with oxygen atoms in the ZnO structure, and this proves that the energy holding capacity is increased due to the red region shift.

Abstract:Both pure and Mn(II)-doped ZnO hollow structures were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction, and their phase structures, morphologies and elemental composition were characterized. SEM and TEM observations show the pure ZnO and the Mn(II)-doped ZnO balls to possess similar hollow structure with a particle size of about 1.5 μm. Their sensing properties were investigated, and the composite containing 1 atom% of Mn(II) (1% Mn-ZnO) is found be display the highest selectivity for acetone. The detection limit is 100 ppm acetone at 234 °C which is 4.6 times lower than that of the pure ZnO. In addition, the response time is shorter. Graphical abstract ZnO and Mn-doped ZnO hollow balls were prepared by a hydrothermal method, and their gas-sensing properties were investigated. Zinc(II) oxide doped with 1 atom% Mn(II) demonstrated an outstanding sensing behavior towards acetone vapors.

Abstract:Zn1 − xMnxO (x = 0.002–0.01) nanoparticles were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The detailed crystal structure and compositional characterizations were characterized by the XRD patterns, Raman spectra, XPS, HRTEM and SEM. the XRD and XPS results show the Mn2+ ions are substitute for Zn2+ ions in the ZnO matrix. In the Raman spectra, the E2(high) peak shifts to lower frequency and the higher intensity of A1(LO) peak appears in the sample with increasing doping concentrations of Mn, indicating a higher concentration of donor defects are introduced in ZnO nanoparticles. Then, the carrier concentration induced by oxygen vacancies are analyzed from the optical absorption spectra. By analyzing the O1s XPS spectrum by Lorentz fitting and PL spectra by Gaussian fitting, the oxygen vacancy concentration increases with Mn doping concentration. The present results suggest that the doped Mn2+ ions play a significant role on enhancing the carrier concentration of ZnO materials.

Abstract:ZnO nanofibers has been successfully divided into nanoparticles through adjusting composition of precursor liquid by an electrospinning method and followed by calcination. The ZnO nanoparticles formed spherical structure, the spherical structure was optimized through yttrium (Y) doping and Y doped ZnO (ZnO:Y) had good gas sensing. The as-synthesized nanostructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmet–Teller method, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, photoluminescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that the spherical structure was composed of ZnO nanoparticles, ZnO:Y nanoparticles had smaller grain size (−50 to 100nm) and were more dispersed compared with pure ZnO (−100 to 150nm grain size). The numerous oxygen species (O− and O2−) were adsorbed on the surface of ZnO:Y nanoparticles, the specific surface area of ZnO:Y structure (40.2m2/g) was larger than pure ZnO (14.5m2/g). The response of spherical ZnO:Y based sensor was higher than pure ZnO for the same acetic acid concentration. The results show ZnO:Y spherical structure could be a potential material for fabricating acetic acid sensors.

Abstract:Undoped and Al-doped ZnO nanofibers were synthesized via a simple electrospinning method, and then characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The ethanol sensing properties of the sensor based on the nanofibers were also investigated. The results show that the sensor fabricated from Al-doped ZnO nanofibers exhibits better gas sensing performance than that fabricated from the undoped ZnO nanofibers, and the gas sensing mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:Hierarchical heterostructures have been proven to be the great material structures for the fabrication of gas sensors, due to they high surface area, well-aligned porosity and synergy effect. Here, ZnO hierarchical structures with various amount of Mn dopant were synthesized through a simple one-step solution route followed by annealing treatment. The characterization results demonstrated that Mn dopant existed in the forms of Mn3O4 nanoparticles and lattice Mn2+ ions. The as-synthesized Mn3O4/ZnO hierarchical structures with abundant oxygen vacancies (MnxZnO with x values of 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 3) were used as the sensing materials toward volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection, illustrating that the introduction of Mn dopant can significantly improve the gas sensing performance. Especially, under optimal working temperature, Mn0.5ZnO hierarchical structures-based gas sensor exhibits the highest responses, fast response/recovery speed (2/9 s), a low detection limit (150 ppb), good selectivity and long-term stability toward acetone. In addition, the enhanced gas sensing mechanisms were explained by large surface area, oxygen vacancies and p-n heterojunction, boosting the surface reactions, which was further verified through DFT calculations. This work also confirmed that Mn element could be a promising dopant in metal oxides for high-performance VOCs gas sensors.

Effects of Mn‐doping on Surface Acoustic Wave Properties of ZnO Films

Abstract:Surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters based on Mn-doped ZnO films have been fabricated and effects of Mn-doping on SAW properties are investigated. It is found that the electromechanical coupling coefficient (K-2) of Zn0.913Mn0.087O films is 0.73 +/- 0.02%, which is 73.8% larger than that of undoped ZnO films (0.42 +/- 0.02%). Zn0.913Mn0.087O film filters also exhibit a lower absolute value of insertion loss (|IL|) of 16.1 dB and larger bandwidth (BW) of 5.9 MHz compared with that of undoped ZnO film filter. However, Zn0.952Mn0.048O film filters exhibit a smaller K-2 of 0.34 +/- 0.02%, larger |IL| of 26.9 dB and smaller BW of 3.5 MHz. It is suggested that the SAW properties can be improved by appropriate Mn-doping and MnZnO/Si multilayer structure with large d33 is promising for wide-band and low-loss SAW applications. The Jahn–Teller distortion‐induced electronic structure regulation of Mn‐doped Co3O4 for enhanced acetone detection

Abstract:An innovative strategy of Jahn–Teller distortion‐induced electronic configuration regulation of Co3O4 is proposed to improve acetone sensing performance. The dynamics and thermodynamics analyses indicate that the Mn doping has improved the sensing reaction rate and reduced the barrier of reaction. Furthermore, the substantial potential application of the sensor as a monitoring gas sensor in pest resistance of Arabidopsis was successfully demonstrated. The modulation of the electronic structure of metal oxides is crucial to enhance their gas‐sensing performance. However, there is lacking in profound study on the effect of electronic structure regulation on sensing performance. Herein, we propose an innovative strategy of Jahn–Teller distortion‐induced electronic configuration regulation of Co3O4 to improve acetone sensing performance. After the introduction of Mn3+ into Co3O4 (Mn‐Co3O4), the Jahn–Teller distortion of high‐spin Mn3+ (t2g3eg1) conversed to low‐spin Mn4+ (t2g3eg0), resulting in conversion of Co3+ (t2g6eg0) into Co2+ (t2g6eg1). As expected, Mn‐Co3O4 exhibits a high response value of 46.7 toward 100 ppm acetone, low limit of detection of 0.75 ppb, high selectivity, and high stability, which are overwhelmingly superior to previous Co3O4‐based acetone sensors. The dynamics and thermodynamics analysis demonstrate that the Mn doping improves sensing reaction rate, reduces reaction barrier, and promotes the charge transfer. The theoretical calculations further prove the charge transfer from Mn to Co derived from Jahn–Teller distortion and support promoting the adsorption of acetone on Co3O4 by Mn dopant. Moreover, we demonstrated the substantial potential application of Mn‐Co3O4 sensor as a monitoring gas sensor in pest resistance of Arabidopsis. This work provides a new strategy to design sensing materials from electronic configuration perspective.

Influence of Ce Doping on Microstructure of Zno Nanoparticles and Their Acetone Sensing Properties

Abstract:Electrospinning technology was generally used to synthesis nanofiber, here we use it to fabricate pure ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and Ce-doped (0.1 wt%, 0.8 wt%, 1.5 wt%) ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO:Ce NPs) via decrease the molecular weight of PVP in precursor liquid. Their microstructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller and photoluminescence spectra. The results clearly indicated that the 0.8 wt% ZnO:Ce NPs shows smaller average grain size (70 nm) and a higher specific surface area (21.5 m(2)/g). The testing on gas sensing performance revealed that the 0.8 wt% ZnO:Ce NPs based sensor shows the highest response values and a well selectivity to acetone. The response and recovery time of ZnO NPs based sensors to 100 ppm acetone was about 13 and 7 s while these are about 10 and 9 s in ZnO:Ce NPs based sensors, respectively. These results demonstrated that the 0.8 wt% ZnO:Ce NPs based sensor can rapidly be detect and distinguish accurately acetone in ambient air. Moreover, the sensor shows good long-term stability and reproducibility of response. The sensing mechanism was also discussed and the results indicated that the gas diffusing channels and the electron depleted layer of the ZnO NPs based sensor was increased markedly after Ce-doped, which results in the response of the ZnO:Ce NPs based sensor increased. Abstract:We prepared Zn1−xMnxO nanorods by thermal diffusion. These samples were then studied the structural, optical, and magnetic properties. The structural analyses basing on x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope revealed the absence of Mn-related secondary phases. The study of photoluminescence spectra revealed the blueshift in the UV emission when the Mn doping concentration was increased, as a consequence of the extension of the band gap energy. Besides this situation, the increase in emission intensity associated with extrinsic defects at about 680 nm also took place. Concerning the Raman scattering spectra, apart from conventional phonon modes related to the ZnO wurtize-type structure, there were some additional modes introduced by the doping. Their origin was assessed carefully. Particularly, the shift in peak position of E2(high) toward low frequencies due to the increase in the Mn doping concentration could be explained well by means of the spatial correlation model. Magnetic measurements proved the samples with Mn concentrations above 1.15 at. % exhibiting the weak-ferromagnetic order at low temperatures. The nature of the ferromagnetism was discussed by means of the results of the structural and optical investigations.

Abstract:<p>Gas sensors based on metal oxides semiconductor (MOS) have attracted extensive attention from both academic and industry. ZnO, as a typical MOS, exhibits potential applications in toxic gas detection, owning to its wide band gap, n‐type transport characteristic and excellent electrical performance. Meanwhile, doping is an effective way to improve the sensing performance of ZnO materials. In this review, the effects of different types of doping on morphology, crystal structure, band gap and depletion layer of ZnO materials are comprehensively discussed. Theoretical analysis on the strategies for enhancing the sensing properties of ZnO is also provided. This review puts forward the reasonable insight for designing efficient n‐type ZnO‐based semiconductor oxide sensing materials.</p>

Abstract:Nowadays, highly sensitive metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors are exerting a growing important influence on the detection of target gases. It is still challenging to get both high sensitivity and selectivity to effectively distinguish gas mixtures. In this study, Mn doped ZnO (MZO) is prepared by a facile co-precipitation method and then further modified by CdO addition. The results show that 2.2mol% MZO has high responses to both acetone and ethanol, while 10 mol% CdO activated 1mol% MZO exhibits excellent sensitivity to ethanol and neglectable response to acetone. This is explained by the enhanced alkalinity of ZnO by the CdO addition expelling acetone from adsorption onto the sensor surface, which is verified by temperature–programmed CO2 desorption. Moreover, the CdO-MZO gas sensor has an optimized working temperature of 240°C, far lower than 340°C of MZO, due to the higher oxidativity as proved by the temperature-programmed H2 reduction. The MZO and CdO-MZO gas sensors are then used as a sensor array to distinguish the ethanol and acetone concentrations in mixtures with varied ratios, showing the promise of the gas sensor property tailoring approach for future high performance gas sensors.
Synthesis of 1D Α-Moo3/0d ZnO Heterostructure Nanobelts with Enhanced Gas Sensing Properties

Abstract:Exploring high-performance sensing materials is ultra-important for safety control. Herein, 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites are prepared via a facile hydrothermal method and its microstructure is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is confirmed that the as-prepared nanocomposites are constituted by 1D alpha-MoO3 nanobelts (200-300 nm in width), with the surface loaded with fine ZnO nanoparticles. Sensing properties of the alpha-MoO3 and 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites to ethanol are measured and compared. Interestingly, the ZnO-decorated alpha-MoO3 nanobelts exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity to ethanol at relatively low operating temperature (250 degrees C) when compared with that of the raw alpha-MoO3 nanobelts, indicating a good candidate of 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites for future ethanol detection. Abstract:The electronic structure of (Zn,Mn)O films with different Mn concentrations has been investigated by element-selective soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. The band gap narrowing of (Zn,Mn)O with increase of Mn concentration (<20% Mn) is attributed to the Mn doping and sp-d exchange interactions. According to analysis of the O K alpha and resonant Mn L-2,L-3 X-ray emission spectra, the splitting of Mn 3d subbands is related to Mn-derived states. It indicates that ferromagnetic coupling in (Zn,Mn)O can be taken into account to be carrier-induced. The presence of antiferromagnetism in the heavier Mn-doped films can be explained in terms of the existence of MnO secondary phases. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
