Abstract:Methyl lactate production from biomass by chemical catalysis is a promising approach in chemical industry. NiO from different suppliers was screened and catalytic conversion processes of biomass-derived carbohydrates to methyl lactate in near critical methanol was optimized. The catalyst used was characterized and the mechanism of the catalytic conversion process with NiO was probed. The results show that NiO from different suppliers has a significant impact on the catalytic conversion of glucose to methyl lactate. NiO from Aladdin has the best catalytic activity. Methyl lactate yield in near-critical methanol is 46.2% under optimal conditions. Moreover, NiO from Aladdin has good reusability. Moderate acidity of catalysts may be the key factor that affects methyl lactate yields. Higher moderate acidity contents of NiO results in higher methyl lactate yields. This work may be helpful in the development of heterogeneous catalysis systems for catalytic conversion of biomass to methyl lactate.

Promoting effect of SnOx on selective conversion of cellulose to polyols over bimetallic Pt-SnOx/Al2O3 catalysts

Abstract:Cellulose is the most abundant source of biomass in nature, and its selective conversion into polyols provides a viable route towards the sustainable synthesis of fuels and chemicals. Here, we report the marked change in the distribution of polyols in the cellulose reaction with the Sn/Pt atomic ratios in a wide range of 0.1-3.8 on the SnOx-modified Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. Such a change was found to be closely related to the effects of the Sn/Pt ratios on the activity for the hydrogenation of glucose and other C-6 sugar intermediates involved in the cellulose reaction as well as to the notable activity of the segregated SnOx species for the selective degradation of the sugar intermediates on the Pt-SnOx/Al2O3 catalysts. At lower Sn/Pt ratios of 0.1-1.0, there existed electron transfer from the SnOx species to the Pt sites and strong interaction between the catalysts, as characterized by temperature-programmed reduction in H-2 and infrared spectroscopy for CO adsorption, which led to their superior hydrogenation activity (per exposed Pt atom), and in-parallel higher selectivity to hexitols (e.g. sorbitol) in the cellulose reaction, as compared to Pt/Al2O3. The hexitol selectivity reached the greatest value of 82.7% at the Sn/Pt ratio of 0.5, nearly two times that of Pt/Al2O3 at similar cellulose conversions (similar to 20%). As the Sn/Pt ratios exceeded 1.5, the Pt-SnOx/Al2O3 catalysts exhibited inferior hydrogenation activity (per exposed Pt atom), due to the formation of the crystalline Pt-Sn alloy, which led to the preferential conversion of cellulose to C-2 and especially C-3 products (e.g. acetol) over hexitols, most likely involving the isomerization of glucose to fructose and retro-aldol condensation of these sugars on the segregated SnOx species, apparently in the form of Sn(OH)(2). These findings clearly demonstrate the feasibility for rational control of the cellulose conversion into the target polyols (e.g. acetol or propylene glycol), for example, by the design of efficient catalysts based on the catalytic functions of the SnOx species with tunable hydrogenation activity.

Abstract:Direct conversion of cellulose into ethylene glycol is a promising route for transforming sustainable biomass resources into high-value chemicals. Although numerous attempts have been made to exploit tungsten-based hydrogenolysis catalysts in the catalytic conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol for high conversion rate and selectivity, maintaining catalyst stability remains challenging. Herein, we have developed a Ni–W/M catalyst with good catalytic performance and stability, which were obtained by calcining Ni–W/MIL-125(Ti) precursor. The synthesized catalyst showed good cellulose conversion rate (100%) and ethylene glycol yield (68.7%). The tungsten species was linked to the TiO2 support by Ti–O–W bonds to reduce loss of the active tungsten component. Abstract:The catalytic conversion of biomass into high value-added products has attracted wide attention, especially the efficient and selective conversion of cellulose into valuable chemicals and fuels. In this paper, using Ni, Al and Ni, Zn, Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as precursors, mixed metal oxides Ni-MMO and NiZn-MMO catalysts were synthesized. In the process of catalyzing the conversion of cellulose to polyols, the reaction condition was an H2 pressure of 4 MPa, and the temperature was 240 °C for 2 hours, the NiZn-MMO catalyst, which can achieve 100% conversion rate and excellent cycling performance in the process of catalytic conversion of cellulose to polyols. The characterization and reaction results showed that the size of the active metal particles Ni in the synthesized Ni-MMO and NiZn-MMO catalysts were very small, and only 1-2nm. ZnO in the NiZn-MMO catalyst mainly play an isomerization role, promoting the formation of more 1,2-PG, while the strong interaction between Ni and Zn can inhibit the dissolution of metal Ni in the hydrothermal reaction. On the other hand, Ni mainly plays the role of rapid hydrogenation to avoid coking, which constitutes a multi-functional synergistic catalytic process for the conversion of cellulose to polyols in high temperature water. This work provides an economical and efficient catalyst, which is of great significance for the effective conversion of biomass.

Abstract:Cellulose is an attractive and potential biomass material in nature. It has been studied for decades to convert it into high value-added chemical materials. In this article, we prepared a unique structure of a yolk–shell catalyst with uniform-sized Pd nanoparticles as the core and easily modified mesoporous silica as the shell, and the shell was modified by alumina and tungsten oxide. The modified /Al-MSiO2 yolk–shell-structured nanosphere (YSNS) catalyst showed good catalytic activity in the conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol: the conversion of cellulose was 96.1%, and the selectivity of ethylene glycol reached 56.5%. From XRD, XPS, and 27Al MAS NMR spectral analysis, it can be seen that the existence of tungsten species would lead to the formation of more extra framework aluminum, which increased the acid strength; meanwhile, aluminum made the tungsten oxide oligomer increase, which increased the dispersion of tungsten species on the catalyst. The interaction of the two metal oxides increased the acidity and the increase in tungsten oxide oligomers were the reasons for the higher selectivity of ethylene glycol. Due to the protective effect of the shell on the Pd nanoparticles, there was no sintering and serious loss of Pd during the reaction, and only small amounts of tungsten and aluminum distributed in the pores and surface were lost. Therefore, the /Al-MSiO2 YSNS catalyst maintained 48.5% ethylene glycol selectivity after five cycles.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
Direct Conversion of Corn Cob to Formic and Acetic Acids over Nano Oxide Catalysts

Abstract:Considering energy shortage, large molecules in corn cob and easy separation of solid catalysts, nano oxides are used to transform corn cob into useful chemicals. Because of the microcrystals, nano oxides offer enough accessible sites for cellulose, hemicellulose and monosaccharide from corn cob hydrolysis and oxidant. Chemical conversion of corn cob to organic acids is investigated over nano ceria, alumina, titania and zirconia under various atmospheres. Liquid products are mainly formic and acetic acids. A small amount of other compounds, such as D-xylose, D-glucose, arabinose and xylitol are also detected simultaneously. The yield of organic acids reaches 25%–29% over the nano oxide of ceria, zirconia and alumina with 3 h reaction time under 453 K and 1.2 MPa O2. The unique and fast conversion of corn cob is directly approached over the nano oxides. The results are comparative to those of biofermentation and offer an alternative method in chemically catalytic conversion of corn cob to useful chemicals in a one-pot chemical process.

Abstract:Herein, we reported a one-pot method that directly converting enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) into cycloalkane fuels using a Ni catalyst derived from Ni-Al hydrotalcite (NiAl-LDH). The effects of Ni/Al ratio and reduction condition on the catalytic activity have been examined. The catalyst obtained from the reduction of NiAl-LDH at 460 °C (Ni 2 Al 1 -re460) shows the highest activity among the catalyst samples examined, attributed to its abundant Lewis acidic sites, small-sized Ni metal particles, and large specific surface area. At optimized reaction conditions (320 °C, 3 MPa H 2 , 6 h), this catalyst achieves 100% EHL conversion and complete oxygen removal and improves the calorific value of the products from 25.0 MJ kg -1 to 42.5 MJ kg -1 . The detected products are cycloalkane dimers and monomers with their carbon numbers within the range suitable for gasoline and diesel, and other large molecules with uncertain structures also predominantly consist of cycloalkane rings.

Abstract:An efficient conversion of cellulose to CH4 over porous Ni catalyst under hydrothermal conditions has been investigated. The results indicated that porous Ni catalyst showed significant catalytic activity and selectivity for the cellulose conversion to methane. Porous Ni catalyst still remained good activity with gaseous hydrogen after three runs for the transformation. The maximum CH4 yield of 73.8% from cellulose was achieved in the presence of Zn as a reductant over porous Ni at 325°C for 2h. This value obtained is the highest yield for the formation of CH4 from cellulose to date. The mechanistic studies for this transformation proposed three possible pathways for the formation of CH4 from cellulose: (1) pyrolysis, (2) hydrogenation of intermediates, and (3) methanation. The present work provides an environmentally benign and efficient route for the conversion of cellulose to CH4 with high efficiency and high selectivity and has great significance for both academia and industry.

Abstract:A bio‐inspired approach for efficient conversion of cellulose to formic acid (FA) was developed in an aqueous alkaline medium. Metalloporphyrins mimicking cytochrome P450 exhibit efficiently and selectively catalytic performance in catalytic conversion of cellulose. High yield of FA about 63.7% was obtained by using sulfonated iron(III) porphyrin as the catalyst and O2 as the oxidant. Iron(III)‐peroxo species, TSPPFeIIIOO−, was involved to cleave the C‐C bonds of gluconic acid to FA in this catalytic system. This approach used relatively high concentration of cellulose and ppm concentration of catalyst. This work may provide a bio‐inspired route to efficient conversion of cellulose to FA.

Abstract:The one-pot catalytic conversion of cellulose into ethylene glycol (EG) is an attractive way of biomass utilization. However, low-cost, efficient, and stable catalysts are the premise and research challenges of industrial application. Herein, the magnetic recyclable W–Ni@C catalyst was synthesized by in-situ pyrolysis of Ni-MOFs impregnated with ammonium metatungstate. Compared with the Ni-W bimetallic catalysts prepared by the impregnation method and the sol–gel method, the W–Ni@C catalyst for cellulose hydrogenolysis reaction can achieve a higher ethylene glycol yield (67.1% vs 43.3% and 42.6%) and 100% of cellulose conversion rate. The uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles and abundant defective WOx were formed in a reductive atmosphere generated in pyrolysis of Ni-MOFs, which was indispensable for the hydrogenolysis of cellulose into EG. Besides, the hierarchical porous carbon derived from organic ligands in Ni-MOFs reduces the mass transfer resistance while confining Ni nanoparticles and WOx to prevent their leaching, effectively enhancing the stability of the W–Ni@C catalyst. Therefore, the remarkable catalytic performance, the simple and effective recovery method as well as satisfying stability would make W–Ni@C become a promising catalyst for the conversion of cellulose to EG.Graphical abstract

Effective Conversion of Cellobiose and Glucose to Sorbitol Using Non-Noble Bimetallic NiCo/HZSM-5 Catalyst

Abstract:The tandem hydrolysis and hydrogenation of saccharides into sorbitol is an especially attractive reaction in the conversion of biomass. Here, an economical and efficient bimetallic catalyst for the transformation of glucose and cellobiose into sorbitol is reported. Non-precious metal based catalysts such as NiCo, Ni, and Co, were prepared via modified impregnation method, and NiCo/HZSM-5 showed superior performance for the synthesis of sorbitol (86.9% from cellobiose, 98.6% from D-glucose). Various characterizations, such as Brunner-Emmet-Teler (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), confirmed that NiCo alloy formed and highly dispersed in NiCo/HZSM-5 catalyst. The high performance of fabricated catalyst would be attributed to the formation of nickel-cobalt alloy over HZSM-5 zeolite surface. High temperature and H2 pressure were favorable for the tandem hydrolysis and hydrogenation reaction. Besides, the reaction pathway was also proposed based on the kinetics study. Cellobitol was detected as the intermediate in the reaction mixture. Furthermore, in the catalytic stability study, it was found that active metal species of NiCo/HZSM-5 were stable. The deactivation of catalyst would be due to the covering of acidic sites over NiCo/HZSM-5.

Abstract:Nb-modified anatase-supported Pt nanoparticles were synthesized for the efficient conversion of cellulose to light bioalcohols. Characterization confirmed the presence of SMSIs in the catalysts, offering adjacent hydrogenation sites, Brønsted and Lewis acid sites. Treating the catalysts in humid air enhanced the acidic concentration, accelerating the key step during the reaction.

Abstract:Production of chemicals and fuels from microcrystalline cellulose has inspired scholars’ attention. Deactivation of metallic catalysts including acid leaching and hydrothermal aggregation is still one of the core issues in these systems. To address these problems, we designed and fabricated a series of Ni-W/SiO2 catalysts, which were decorated by C x N y species using C- and N-sources and applied in cellulose conversion to C2,3 oxygenated compounds. The Ni-W/SiO2@C x N y catalysts, underwent complexing and self-assembling process, exhibited special heterojunctions, accompanying strong interactions mainly among Ni phase and C x N y layers. Catalytic results showed that the heterojunctions and outer C x N y layers extensively enhanced productions of hydroxyacetone (HDA) and ethylene glycol (EG) and promoted the hydrothermal stability through prospering in concentration of Lewis pairs from NiN—N structure and immobilizing the metallic nanoclusters. 48.25% of EG was yielded under 5.0 MPa H2 pressurized 240 °C water for 2.0 h. The Lewis pair further improved the formation of HDA with 20.92% yield. High hydrothermal stability of Ni-W/SiO2@C x N y catalyst was proved according to the recycling results and trace leaching concentration of Ni and W. This construction of metallic catalysts exploited a new strategy to manufacture extraordinary durability of metallic nanoclusters for cellulose conversion under harsh reaction conditions.

Abstract:The bi-functional Ni–W@C catalysts were prepared by one-pot reduction–carbonization method and used in hydrogenolysis of cellulose as well as raw lignocellulosic biomass to chemicals. The catalytic performance for cellulose conversion showed that it was more favorable for ethylene glycol (EG) production, obtaining the highest EG yield 60.1% over the Ni–W@C700 catalyst. The Ni–W@C bimetallic catalysts are systematically characterized with BET, XRD, Raman, XPS, TEM techniques and experiments to probe the active catalytic sites of the catalysts. The effects of calcination temperature of Ni–W catalysts, reaction time, temperature and H2 pressure on cellulose hydrogenolysis were investigated in detail. The Ni particles could lead to produce more W5+ active sites, which promotes the glucose retro-aldol condensation to break the target C–C bonds. Metallic Ni catalyzed C=O hydrogenation and C–C hydrogenolysis, which could also avoid the coke formation. The EG selectivity was dependent on the synergy of WOx and Ni metal sites. In addition, this synergistic effect between the metal and WOx could promote lignin component degradation in direct conversion of untreated raw lignocellulosic biomass, obtaining the propyl monophenolics including guaiacylpropane, syringylpropane and p-n-propylphenol with a total yield of 17.3 wt% besides EG.

Abstract:Efficient utilization of cellulose is of scientific significance and a great challenge for both fundamental and industrial studies. Herein, we synthesized MesoZSM-5 zeolites by using nanocrystalline cellulose as a template for the first time, and reported the exciting performance of the corresponding non-noble metal catalysts (Ni/MesoZSM-5) for efficient conversion of cellulose to hexitols. By modulating the ratio of the template to precursor, MesoZSM-5 supports were produced with tunable pore structure and acidic sites. With the cooperation of active Ni sites and acidic sites of MesoZSM-5, hexitols were obtained with a high yield of around 60% in the direct conversion of commercial microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The corresponding correlation between the structural characteristics and catalytic performance was established. This work provides a new approach for efficient utilization of cellulose, as well as gives rise to a sustainable templating method for the synthesis of mesoporous zeolites.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of cellulose to liquid fuel and highly valuable platform chemicals remains a critical and challenging process. Here, bismuth-decorated β zeolite catalysts (Bi/β) were exploited for highly efficient hydrolysis and selective oxidation of cellulose to biomass-derived glycolic acid in an O2 atmosphere, which exhibited an exceptionally catalytic activity and high selectivity as well as excellent reusability. It was interestingly found that as high as 75.6% yield of glycolic acid over 2.3 wt% Bi/β was achieved from cellulose at 180 °C for 16 h, which was superior to previously reported catalysts. Experimental results combined with characterization revealed that the synergetic effect between oxidation active sites from Bi species and surface acidity on H-β together with appropriate total surface acidity significantly facilitated the chemoselectivity towards the production of glycolic acid in the direct, one-pot conversion of cellulose. This study will shed light on rationally designing Bi-based heterogeneous catalysts for sustainably generating glycolic acid from renewable biomass resources in the future.

Abstract:The conversion of dihydroxyacetone solution in methanol to methyl lactate has been studied in flow regime using xSnO 2 /Al 2 O 3 -supported catalysts that have been characterized by XRD, low-temperature nitrogen (ad)desorption analysis, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. It is found that Lewis and Brønsted acid sites of the surface of SnO 2 -containing catalysts play a crucial role in the selective conversion of dihydroxyacetone to methyl lactate. The formation of methyl lactate with a selectivity of 90% is achieved on 5%SnO 2 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst at 160°C, 1.0 MPa, and under feed rate of 4 mmol C 3 H 6 O 3 /(g cat ·h).
