Abstract:In this study, a series of catalysts including different metal oxides loading on HZSM-5(Si/Al = 25) and cobalt oxides loading on different supports were synthesized to catalyze fast pyrolysis (CFP) of biomass derived polylactic acid (PLA) to produce acetonitrile under ammonia atmosphere. Both the metal and the acid of the catalyst had a crucial influence on the yield of acetonitrile and Co/HZSM-5(25) produced most acetonitrile. Other factors that might affect the product distribution including cobalt loading, reaction temperature, resident time and NH3 flow rate have been investigated systematically. Under the optimized CFP condition (650 degrees C; resident time 2.4 s; NH3 flow rate 80 ml/min), the carbon yield and selectivity of acetonitrile in liquid product reached 50.2% and 83.6%, respectively. The possible reaction pathway from PLA to acetonitrile was also studied and proposed. PLA firstly cracked into lactic acid through thermal decomposition and formed lactide at the same time. Then lactic acid and lactide cracked into low-molecular aldehydes, ketones and acids. These aldehydes and ketones reacted with ammonia to form imines, acids to amides, and finally to acetonitrile and small amount of proponitrile under the catalysis of Co/HZSM-5 catalyst.
Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis of Cellulose in a Microreactor System Using Hierarchical Zsm-5 Zeolites Treated with Various Alkalis

Abstract:Hierarchical ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared by desilication using NaOH, Na2CO3 and TPAOH with different concentrations under the same treatment conditions. Their structures and acidities were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), N-2 adsorption and desorption (N-2-BET) and ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD). The catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of cellulose to produce aromatics over the hierarchical ZSM-5 catalysts prepared using different alkali treatments was investigated. The alkali treatment by Na2CO3 (0.4 similar to 0.8 M) was much milder than treatment by NaOH, which allowed the desilication process to be highly controllable, resulting in an increase of both the amount and strength of the strong acid sites, and the formation of hierarchical structures combining micro- and mesoporosity. The organic hydroxide TPAOH did not change the pore structure of ZSM-5, but it greatly increased the relative crystallinity. The CFP of cellulose with HZSM-5 produced 35.5% liquid aromatic hydrocarbons and 32.7% coke. The yield of aromatics increased after Na2CO3 treatment but decreased after NaOH treatment. In addition, the yield of coke showed the opposite trend. The highest aromatic yield (38.2%) and lowest coke yield were obtained in the CFP of cellulose with the desilicated zeolite treated with 0.6 M Na2CO3. The increased acidity in hierarchical ZSM-5 treated with Na2CO3 increased the selectivity of highly valuable aromatics, such as benzene, toluene, and xylene, and decreased the selectivity of large aromatics. TPAOH-treated HZSM-5 showed a slightly increased yield of aromatics due to the repair effect of TPAOH, but this treatment did not form a mesoporous structure.

Abstract:In this work, corn cob was used as raw material to selectively produce acetonitrile via catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) in ammonia over Ga/HZSM-5 catalyst. A series of catalysts with different catalyst carriers (including HZSM-5, USY, MCM-41, HY, and gamma-Al2O3) and active metals (including Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, Ca, Mg and Ga) were prepared and screened. The reaction conditions, such as temperature, ammonia flow rate and residence time were changed to investigate the effect on the product distribution and acetonitrile production. The results indicated that with the desired catalyst (2% Ga/HZSM-5) and optimal reaction conditions (Temperature 700 degrees C; ammonia flow rate 80 ml/min; residence time 2.4 s), the highest carbon yield of acetonitrile from corn cob with a value of 18.4% could be obtained, and the carbon selectivity in bio-oil was 83.5%. This study provides an economical and environmental-friendly method for the direct production of acetonitrile from abundant biomass.

Abstract:In this study, cellulose was selectively converted into pyrroles via catalytic fast pyrolysis under ammonia atmosphere over the gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. Both in situ and ex situ lab-scale fast pyrolysis sets were designed and used for investigation, and more pyrroles were produced via in situ CFP process. In addition, the effects of catalyst, reaction temperature and catalyst-to-cellulose ratio on the product distribution were investigated systematically. All these factors played important roles in the production of pyrroles. Under the optimized in situ CFP condition, at 400 degrees C and catalyst-to-cellulose ratio at 2, the carbon yield of N-containing chemicals from cellulose under ammonia atmosphere reached 9.7%. The selectivity of pyrroles in N-containing chemicals was 89.5%. The possible conversion pathway from cellulose to pyrroles was also proposed, that is, cellulose was firstly converted into anhydrosugars through thermal decomposition, then anhydrosugars underwent dehydration and rearrangement reactions to form furans. Abstract:Pyrolysis can convert biomass into sustainable chemicals and fuels, but the nitrogen compounds in its non-lignocellulosic components may produce hazardous NO x and its precursors. In this paper, catalytic pyrolysis of glutamic acid (Glu), used as a representing compound for biomass nitrogen source, was investigated at bench scale to study the transformation of the nitrogen element and the mechanism of Ammonia (NH 3 ) and Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) formation. The yields of the liquid, gaseous and solid products and the distribution of nitrogen compounds were systematically analysed. The experimental results showed that catalytic pyrolysis with H-ZSM-5 could increase the nitrogen compounds in the gas product from 38.54 % to 53.95 %, while it can reduce the nitrogen in the tar and char by 69.22 % and 58.07 %, respectively. The result of Density Functional Theory (DFT) study showed that the deamination to ternary cyclic ethers was the optimum pathway for NH 3 formation. The formation of HCN has been dominated by the removal of side chain groups (reaction path 8). The energy barrier of the reaction path 9 was reduced to a level comparable to the energy barrier of path 8 during the catalytic pyrolysis, which may compete with each other. The 8T cluster model of the H-ZSM-5 catalyst revealed that the hydrogen bond formed between the acid sites and the reactants played an significant role in decreasing the reaction energy barrier. The experimental and computational results demonstrated the controlling mechanism of acid sites on the production of NH 3 and HCN compounds and provided fundamental understanding to nitrogen transformation during the biomass pyrolysis.

Abstract:Pyrolysis is a promising thermochemical conversion technology, which can convert biomass and cellulose into value-added products. Herein, a new approach of oxalic acid-assisted staged fast pyrolysis (OASFP) of cellulose was developed, achieving the coproduction of 1,4:3,6-dianhydro-alpha-d-glucopyranose (DGP), furfural (FF), and formic acid (FA) in separated pyrolysis stages. The lab-scale tests demonstrated that a selectivity of 71.6% and a yield of 31.5 wt % for FA in the aqueous phase, as well as a selectivity of 55.6% and a yield of 1.2 wt % for FF in the organic phase, were achieved in the primary pyrolysis stage under the optimized conditions (primary pyrolysis temperature of 220 degree celsius and cellulose-to-oxalic acid (OA) ratio of 1:3). During the subsequent secondary pyrolysis process at 400 degree celsius, the decomposition of the solid residue achieved a yield of 7.2 wt % and a selectivity of 32.7% for DGP. The interaction between OA and cellulose during the primary pyrolysis stage was essential for DGP generation. The formation mechanism of major products and the role of OA were revealed based on experiments and density functional theory calculations. In total, the OASFP of cellulose offers new possibilities and opportunities for biomass utilization.

Abstract:Fast pyrolysis of biomass materials impregnated with ZnCl2 offered a promising way to obtain a liquid product rich in furfural (FF) and acetic acid (AA), and the pyrolytic solids could be used as the precursors to prepare activated carbons (ACs). In this study, a lab-scale fast pyrolysis set was designed and used for the quantitative production of the three chemicals. The maximum FF was produced from the corncob impregnated with at least 15wt% ZnCl2 and at the pyrolysis temperature around 340°C, with the yield of more than 8wt% compared with only 0.49wt% from the raw corncob. Meanwhile, AA of around 4wt% could be obtained. The content of the FF and AA was over 50wt% and 25wt% on the water-free basis of the pyrolytic liquids. In addition, ACs were prepared from the pyrolytic solids, and they exhibited similar properties as those prepared from direct activation of ZnCl2-impregnated biomass materials.

Abstract:The transformation of lignocellulosic biomass into bio-based commodity chemicals is technically possible. Among thermochemical processes, fast pyrolysis, a relatively mature technology that has now reached a commercial level, produces a high yield of an organic-rich liquid stream. Despite recent efforts to elucidate the degradation paths of biomass during pyrolysis, the selectivity and recovery rates of bio-compounds remain low. In an attempt to clarify the general degradation scheme of biomass fast pyrolysis and provide a quantitative insight, the use of fast pyrolysis microreactors is combined with spectroscopic techniques (i.e., mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy) and mixtures of unlabeled and 13 C-enriched materials. The first stage of the work aimed to select the type of reactor to use to ensure control of the pyrolysis regime. A comparison of the chemical fragmentation patterns of "primary" fast pyrolysis volatiles detected by using GC-MS between two small-scale microreactors showed the inevitable occurrence of secondary reactions. In the second stage, liquid fractions that are also made of primary fast pyrolysis condensates were analyzed by using quantitative liquid-state 13 C NMR spectroscopy to provide a quantitative distribution of functional groups. The compilation of these results into a map that displays the distribution of functional groups according to the individual and main constituents of biomass (i.e., hemicelluloses, cellulose and lignin) confirmed the origin of individual chemicals within the fast pyrolysis liquids.

Abstract:The acid-catalyzed conversion of lignocellulosic biomass (AC3B) process has been developed for the direct liquefaction of lignocellulosic biomass. In the original version, the main products, ethyl esters, are produced in acidic medium containing ethanol, using a one-pot conversion system. Our research strategy for obtaining a high overall performance is based on two general concepts: (a) coupling of catalytic/chemical reactions that lead to desired products and (b) decoupling of reactions that produce unwanted products, by decreasing the effectiveness of these reactions. Concept (a) is realized by using oxidizers (hydrogen peroxide and Fenton’s reagent) that promote a higher production of carboxylic acids as main intermediates, while concept (b) contributes to a significant decrease of undesired formation of polymeric products. As result of these reaction coupling and decoupling, the overall yield of liquid products has been multiplied by a factor of 2.5 (from 27 to over 70 wt%). Not only the yields of products from cellulose and hemicellulose components experience considerable increases, but also the lignin component starts undergoing a noticeable conversion. Essentially, the AC3B process, in the most recent version, consumes ethanol that is partly used to produce liquid fuels and chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass. Abstract:Nowadays, lignocellulosic biomass is considered as renewable source for the substitute of traditional fossil energy resources. The production of biofuel intermediates such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), levulinic acid and.-valerolactone (GVL), and commercially interesting compounds such as lactic acid and ethylene glycol from biomass has become an important issue for world-wide researchers. In this work, we focused on the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into acetic acid through a "one-pot two-step" method over inorganic acids in aqueous media. The first step was the hydrolysis of the raw biomass with sulfuric acid at 190 degrees C, 1.0 MPa N-2 for 1 h. After that, the reaction was changed to 2.0 MPa O-2 and allowed to react for another 9 h. HPLC analysis of the result mixture showed that mass yield of acetic acid from corn stover was up to 21.3%, and the selectivity of acetic acid was as high as 84.6% of the total liquid products. Besides, the other lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks such as corn cob, bagasse, bamboo, poplar and pine were also successfully converted into acetic acid in good yields under the optimized reaction condition. In addition, the stability of the catalyst acid was examined, and the recovery of the catalyst acid is about 95%. Thus, to achieve the reuse of the catalyst acid, the addition of extra 10% catalyst acid after each catalytic cycle was needed. Finally, the reaction pathway was explored by using the components of the lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks as the starting materials (sugars etc.). The results showed that the carbohydrates especially hexoses were the main source of acetic acid. It was dehydrated and hydrolyzed into the intermediate levulinic acid, which was then oxidized into acetic acid by C-C bond oxidative cleavage. The current method provided a new access to the bulk acetic acid from sustainable raw biomass.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass has gained growing interest as a promising substitute for the production of renewable and sustainable chemicals and fuels as the dwindling fossil-fuel reserves. Pyrolysis without using any chemical reagent is an effective method to depolymerize cellulose into kinds of value-added chemicals. Herein, we summarized recent progress about non-catalytic and catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose into specific chemicals, including levoglucosan, 1-hydroxy-3,6-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-2-one, levoglucosenone, furans, aromatics, and olefins via dehydration, aromatization, and aldol condensation, etc. An analysis and of the optimal conditions of these value-added chemicals by catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose are benefit to develop better production methods. In addition, the potential challenges and future perspectives for the pyrolysis of cellulose to chemicals are also discussed to provide a feasible direction for relevant researchers to advance industrialization.

Abstract:We report on catalytic fast pyrolysis microalgae under ammonia atmosphere into acetonitrile over Ga/HZSM-5, which provides a long-term sustainable option for acetonitrile production and microalgae valorization. The effect of various catalysts, reaction conditions and species of microalgae on acetonitrile production was explored systematically. Under the optimized conditions, the maximum carbon yield of acetonitrile from Chlorella vulgaris was 23.4%, and the selectivity of acetonitrile in bio-oil was up to 77.2%. The possible reaction pathways were proposed according to the comprehensive experimental investigation on the conversion of model compounds and intermediates (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, carboxylic acids, furans, and amines). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed that Ga was present mainly at the outer surface of zeolite crystals, and a small amount of Ga was doped into the zeolite crystals.

Abstract:The catalytic effects of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) on the biomass pyrolysis and its mechanism for the selective production of furfural (FF) and levoglucosenone (LGO) were investigated in this study. Samples were prepared with rice husk and ADP solutions with gradient-concentration and pyrolyzed via TG-FTIR and PyGC/MS. Results showed that ADP made the decomposition of cellulose occur at a lower temperature and greatly enhanced the release of C=O groups and carbohydrates below 300 degrees C, indicating the breakage of glycosidic bond and dehydration reaction during pyrolysis were promoted by ADP. In the pyrolysis volatiles, the production of anhydrosugars and furans was promoted significantly. Due to the rearrangement of the methoxy group, the production of methoxy phenols and CH4 was decreased simultaneously. ADP showed good selectivity for both FF and LGO. With the increased ADP dose, the yield and relative content of FF and LGO increased firstly and then kept stable. 400 degrees C was found the optimal temperature for the production of FF and LGO, where the sum of the relative peak area of LGO and FF could reach 52.23%. Finally, a possible formation pathway of LGO and FF under the catalysis of ADP was speculated.

Abstract:A new technique was proposed to produce furfural (FF) through low-temperature fast pyrolysis of biomass impregnated with ZnCl2. Analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) experiments were performed in this study to reveal the ZnCl2-catalyzed biomass pyrolysis and FF formation characteristics. The results revealed that the presence of ZnCl2 decreased the temperature for the complete decomposition of biomass, inhibited the devolatilization of lignin and pyrolytic ring scission of holocellulose. Meanwhile, it promoted the depolymerization and dehydration of holocellulose to form the FF and three anhydrosugars (levoglucosenone (LGO), 1-hydroxy-3,6-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-2-one (LAC) and 1,4:3,6-dianhydro-α-d-glucopyranose (DGP)) as the major primary pyrolytic products. With the increase of the ZnCl2 content, the three anhydrosugars were firstly increased and then decreased, while the FF was increased steadily. Moreover, these anhydrosugars could be converted to FF through the secondary catalysis by ZnCl2, leaving the FF as the predominant product. In addition, the acetic acid (AA), which was not inhibited by the ZnCl2, was formed as the only important liquid by-product.

Abstract:Amino acids are the building blocks for protein biosynthesis and find use in myriad industrial applications including in food for humans, in animal feed, and as precursors for bio-based plastics, among others. However, the development of efficient chemical methods to convert abundant and renewable feedstocks into amino acids has been largely unsuccessful to date. To that end, here we report a heterogeneous catalyst that directly transforms lignocellulosic biomass-derived α-hydroxyl acids into α-amino acids, including alanine, leucine, valine, aspartic acid, and phenylalanine in high yields. The reaction follows a dehydrogenation-reductive amination pathway, with dehydrogenation as the rate-determining step. Ruthenium nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes (Ru/CNT) exhibit exceptional efficiency compared with catalysts based on other metals, due to the unique, reversible enhancement effect of NH3 on Ru in dehydrogenation. Based on the catalytic system, a two-step chemical process was designed to convert glucose into alanine in 43% yield, comparable with the well-established microbial cultivation process, and therefore, the present strategy enables a route for the production of amino acids from renewable feedstocks. Moreover, a conceptual process design employing membrane distillation to facilitate product purification is proposed and validated. Overall, this study offers a rapid and potentially more efficient chemical method to produce amino acids from woody biomass components.
On-line Catalytic Upgrading of Biomass Fast Pyrolysis Products

Abstract:Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) was employed to achieve fast pyrolysis of biomass and on-line analysis of the pyrolysis vapors. Four biomass materials (poplar wood, fir wood, cotton straw and rice husk) were pyrolyzed to reveal the difference among their products. Moreover, catalytic cracking of the pyrolysis vapors from cotton straw was performed by using five catalysts, including two microporous zeolites (HZSM-5 and HY) and three mesoporous catalysts (ZrO2&TiO2, SBA-15 and Al/SBA-15). The results showed that the distribution of the pyrolytic products from the four materials differed a little from each other, while catalytic cracking could significantly alter the pyrolytic products. Those important primary pyrolytic products such as levoglucosan, hydroxyacetaldehyde and 1-hydroxy-2-propanone were decreased greatly after catalysis. The two microporous zeolites were effective to generate high yields of hydrocarbons, while the three mesoporous materials favored the formation of furan, furfural and other furan compounds, as well as acetic acid.

Abstract:Biomass waste pyrolysis has taken an increasing interest in producing biofuels and bio-based chemicals, but the complex compositions of pyrolytic liquid hinder its development and utilization. To address these challenges and improve the yield of target chemicals (levoglucosan) and aromatics, a novel two-stage process based on NaOH-Fenton pretreatment coupled with fast pyrolysis is firstly proposed. Firstly, rice straw was pretreated by dilute alkali to separate lignin fractions, and then the residue was further treated via Fenton reaction at room temperature to obtain cellulose-rich substrate. The fast pyrolysis of raw rice straw produced the complex compositions in the pyrolytic liquid. After NaOH-Fenton pretreatment, the target platform chemicals in the pyrolysate were effectively concentrated. The cellulose-rich substrate exhibited a very high absolute yield of levoglucosan (201.9 mg/g) as compared to raw rice straw (not detected). The lignin fractions recovered from this process were catalytically fast pyrolyzed for preparing aromatic fuels. Furtherly, the maximum removal rates of nitrogen (76.5%) and sulfur (93.3%) were achieved by the coupled process. A short-chain cellulose-rich substrate with similar dissociation energy of glycosidic bonds was formed by the NaOH-Fenton process based on the analytical results of the DFT calculation and mechanism. The similar dissociation energy of C–O bonds from the short-chain cellulose-rich substrate favors the formation of high-yield levoglucosan in subsequent fast pyrolysis. This work introduces a simple and highly efficient strategy to convert grass biowaste into value-added chemicals and liquid fuels.
