Abstract:The development of highly efficient, low-cost supported catalysts is crucial for directly deoxygenating biomass fatty acids to long-chain olefins. However, additive-free olefin production, by dehydrative decarbonylation from fatty acids, is scarcely conducted owing to competing decarboxylation reactions. Herein, a green and cost-effective strategy is presented to improve the Co-catalyzed dehydrative decarbonylation of stearic acid, which produces a mixture of heptadecenes with yields of up to 41.3 % and a paraffin yield of 14.7 %. Experimental data, along with a detailed catalyst characterization, revealed that the surface CoNx species acted as the dominant active sites. Furthermore, the specific catalytic performance can be attributed to the dense defect sites, abundant vacancies, and mesoporous structures of the N-doped Carbon (NC) support. The as-prepared CoNx/NC catalysts were recovered and reused up to three times without significant deactivation. Additionally, we propose a possible reaction mechanism for fatty acid deoxygenation. This research makes a significant contribution toward advancing the performance of noble-metal-free deoxygenation catalysts for the production of unsaturated compounds in biomass conversions.

Abstract:The upgrading of biomass into sustainable and valuable fine chemicals is an alternative to the use of state-of-the-art petrochemicals. The conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) biomass derivative into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has been recognized as an economical and green approach to replace the current polyethylene terephthalate based plastic industry. However, this reaction mostly relies on noble-metal-based catalysts for the sluggish aerobic oxidation of alcohol groups. In this work, we report a series of hierarchical Ni-Co-based transition metal oxide catalysts for HMF oxidation by electrocatalysis. Comprehensive material characterization and electrochemical evaluation have been performed. A 90 % FDCA yield, nearly 100 % Faradaic efficiency, and robust stability were achieved for NiCo<sub>2</sub> O<sub>4</sub> nanowires. As non-precious-metal catalysts, Ni-Co-based transition metal oxides may open up new potential materials for highly efficient electrochemical biomass upgrading.

Toward Biomass-Based Single-Atom Catalysts and Plastics: Highly Active Single-Atom Co on N-doped Carbon for Oxidative Esterification of Primary Alcohols

Abstract:Supported single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted much attention as their advantageous performances in heterogenous catalysis. Here, we report a general synthesis approach to produce SACs on nitrogen-doped carbon (M SAs-N@C, where M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) by engineering bioinspired metal-lignin coordination complexes. The Co SAs-N@C catalyst shows extraordinary reactivity for the oxidative esterification of primary alcohols via aldehyde intermediates, achieving a high turnover frequency (TOF, 55.6 mol (methyl benzoate) mol(Co)(-1)h(-1)) for benzyle alcohol, which is approx. 18 times of Co nanoparticles. Experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the atomically dispersed Co species in Co SAs-N@C are active sites for this reaction. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate an integrated biorefinery that lignin-based catalyst enables the effective transformation of carbohydrate-derived furans into building block of plastics and fragrance. Our technique not only provides a facile, low-cost and scalable method to atomically dispersed catalysts but also opens new avenue toward lignin valorization and biomass economy.
Lattice Strain Engineering on Metal‐Organic Frameworks by Ligand Doping to Boost the Electrocatalytic Biomass Valorization

Abstract:By doping of isophthalic acid ligand into the NiCo‐based metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), lattice strain is introduced. It successfully endows this MOFs with tunned electronic state of metal sites and facilitates electrocatalytic activities toward bond cleavage within the lignin model compounds and the pre‐oxidized poplar lignin under a low oxidation potential. As an efficient and environmental‐friendly strategy, electrocatalytic oxidation can realize biomass lignin valorization by cleaving its aryl ether bonds to produce value‐added chemicals. However, the complex and polymerized structure of lignin presents challenges in terms of reactant adsorption on the catalyst surface, which hinders further refinement. Herein, NiCo‐based metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are employed as the electrocatalyst to enhance the adsorption of reactant molecules through π‐π interaction. More importantly, lattice strain is introduced into the MOFs via curved ligand doping, which enables tuning of the d‐band center of metal active sites to align with the reaction intermediates, leading to stronger adsorption and higher electrocatalytic activity toward bond cleavage within lignin model compounds and native lignin. When 2′‐phenoxyacetophenone is utilized as the model compound, high yields of phenol (76.3%) and acetophenone (21.7%) are achieved, and the conversion rate of the reactants reaches 97%. Following pre‐oxidation of extracted poplar lignin, >10 kinds of phenolic compounds are received using the as‐designed MOFs electrocatalyst, providing ≈12.48% of the monomer, including guaiacol, vanillin, eugenol, etc., and p‐hydroxybenzoic acid dominates all the products. This work presents a promising and deliberately designed electrocatalyst for realizing lignin valorization, making significant strides for the sustainability of this biomass resource.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysis over single-atom catalysts (SACs) has garnered significant attention in biomass-derived platform chemical conversion owing to the high atomic utilization and reliable selectivity/stability. Herein, Co single-atom catalysts (Co-N/F1) derived from fractionated lignin were employed for the oriented oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a typical platform chemical derived from glucose, into 2,5-furandicarboxylicacid (FDCA) under mild conditions. The Co-N/F1 with enhanced Co content was obtained using the low-molecular-weight lignin fraction (F1) with high functional group contents (e.g., Ph-OH and COOH), and the as-prepared catalyst was demonstrated to present a Co-N-4 configuration. Owing to the absence of colored byproduct formation from HMF at elevated temperatures, Co-N/F1 realized the highly selective conversion of HMF to FDCA (100% HMF conversion, 99.20% FDCA yield) under mild conditions (65 degrees C, 3 bar O-2), which outperformed most reported non-noble metal-supported catalysts. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the Co-N-4 site in Co-N/F1 facilitates the dehydrogenation of the alpha-C position on HMF and its aldehyde intermediates, resulting in a significantly enhanced catalytic efficiency. Furthermore, Co-N/F1 exhibited stable reusability due to the alkaline resistance of the Co-N-4 structure. Our study details the insights into the synthesis of Co-SACs using a lignin fractionation strategy and further demonstrates its good feasibility for the oriented conversion of biomass-derived platform chemicals under mild conditions.

Abstract:Chemical reductions of lignin are useful to remove oxygen and create product slates that can function as renewable platform molecules for new fuels and chemicals. Catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis (CTH) is an underexplored method to conduct reductions of lignin that obviates the use of dangerous and non-renewable hydrogen gas. While noble metals are used extensively as catalysts for transfer hydrogenation, one major challenge for their deployment is related to their sustainability. In this work, we synthesized mixed-metal oxides of earth-abundant Co and Ni. We characterized these catalysts using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and tested their reactivity for CTH of acetophenone. Among the catalysts we tested, we noted that the spinel NiCo2O4 demonstrated the highest conversion of acetophenone (75%) and highest selectivity for ethylbenzene (90%), so we applied it to valorization of switchgrass lignin extracted under mild operating conditions by cosolvent enhanced lignocellulosic fractionation (CELF). The catalytically depolymerized lignin showed an increase in selectively deoxygenated monomeric compounds. Using 2D-NMR spectroscopy, we demonstrated the lignin displayed highly reduced aliphatic carbons resulting from the reduction reaction at the Cα sites mediated by our catalyst material. These results are critical to the further development of the lignin-first biorefinery as they demonstrate the use of sustainable catalyst materials and mild transformation conditions to generate and refine a suite of new bioproducts.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of ethyl levulinate (EL) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) is an important intermediate reaction in the conversion and utilization of biomass resources. The development of novel and efficient catalysts is significantly important for this reaction. In this work, using the biomass-derived tannic acid as carbon precursor and the transition metal cobalt as active component, a novel tannic acid carbon supported cobalt catalyst (Co/TAC) was prepared by pyrolysis and subsequent hydrazine hydrate reduction method. The hydrogenation of EL and other carbonyl compounds by hydrogen transfer reaction was used to evaluate the performance of the catalysts. The effects of different preparation and reaction conditions on the performance of the catalysts were investigated, and the structures of the prepared catalysts were characterized in detail. The results showed that the carbonization temperature of the support had a significant effect on the activity of the catalyst for the reaction. Under the optimized conditions, the Co/TAC-900 catalyst obtained the highest GVL yield of 91.3% under relatively mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, the prepared catalyst also showed high efficiency for the hydrogenation of various ketone compounds with different structures. This work provides a new reference for the construction of the catalysts during the conversion of biomass and a potential pathway for the high-value utilization of tannin resource.

Enhanced Ni/W/Ti Catalyst Stability from Ti–O–W Linkage for Effective Conversion of Cellulose into Ethylene Glycol

Abstract:Direct conversion of cellulose into ethylene glycol is a promising route for transforming sustainable biomass resources into high-value chemicals. Although numerous attempts have been made to exploit tungsten-based hydrogenolysis catalysts in the catalytic conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol for high conversion rate and selectivity, maintaining catalyst stability remains challenging. Herein, we have developed a Ni–W/M catalyst with good catalytic performance and stability, which were obtained by calcining Ni–W/MIL-125(Ti) precursor. The synthesized catalyst showed good cellulose conversion rate (100%) and ethylene glycol yield (68.7%). The tungsten species was linked to the TiO2 support by Ti–O–W bonds to reduce loss of the active tungsten component. Abstract:The conversion of lignin-based platform compounds into valuable biofuels and chemicals through catalytic processes is an attractive approach for the efficient valorization of renewable lignocellulosic biomass. One such process is the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-based vanillin (VL) to produce 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP), which is a promising liquid fuel and intermediate for fine chemicals. However, the development of a cost-effective catalytic system with high activity and selectivity remains a challenge. In this study, we report the preparation of a highly-efficient magnetic Co nanoparticles catalyst, CoZn@N-ALC, using alkali lignin as an assembly macromolecular ligand, Zn as a sacrificial metal, and dicyandiamide as a nitrogen source before the pyrolysis process. Various characterization techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), pyridine adsorption infrared spectroscopy (Py-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), isothermal nitrogen adsorption/desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were employed to investigate the role of zinc and nitrogen in the construction process of CoZn@N-ALC and the influence of catalyst preparation conditions. The optimized CoZn@N-ALC catalyst demonstrated nearly 100% conversion of VL, complete selectivity towards MMP, and easy separation from the aqueous HDO system. Structure-performance investigation and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the exceptional catalytic performance of this catalyst can be attributed to the selective adsorption of C=O bonds by abundant Co (111) active species and its Lewis acid sites. This work provides valuable insights into the rational design of efficient, non-noble metal nanoparticle catalysts based on alkali lignin for the conversion of lignin-based platform compounds. Abstract:The catalytic conversion of cellulose to lactic acid (LA) has garnered significant attention in recent years due to the potential of cellulose as a renewable and sustainable biomass feedstock. Here, a series of Au/W-ZnO catalysts were synthesized and employed to transform cellulose into LA. Through the optimization of reaction parameters and catalyst compositions, we achieved complete cellulose conversion with a selectivity of 54.6% toward LA over Au/W-ZnO at 245 °C for 4 h. This catalyst system also proved effective at converting cotton and kenaf fibers. Structural and chemical characterizations revealed that the synergistic effect of W, ZnO, and Au facilitated mesoporous architecture generation and the establishment of an adequate acidic environment. The catalytic process proceeded through the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose, isomerization to fructose, and its subsequent conversion to LA, with glucose isomerization identified as the rate-limiting step. These findings provide valuable insights for developing high-performance catalytic systems to convert cellulose.

Abstract:Considering energy shortage, large molecules in corn cob and easy separation of solid catalysts, nano oxides are used to transform corn cob into useful chemicals. Because of the microcrystals, nano oxides offer enough accessible sites for cellulose, hemicellulose and monosaccharide from corn cob hydrolysis and oxidant. Chemical conversion of corn cob to organic acids is investigated over nano ceria, alumina, titania and zirconia under various atmospheres. Liquid products are mainly formic and acetic acids. A small amount of other compounds, such as D-xylose, D-glucose, arabinose and xylitol are also detected simultaneously. The yield of organic acids reaches 25%–29% over the nano oxide of ceria, zirconia and alumina with 3 h reaction time under 453 K and 1.2 MPa O2. The unique and fast conversion of corn cob is directly approached over the nano oxides. The results are comparative to those of biofermentation and offer an alternative method in chemically catalytic conversion of corn cob to useful chemicals in a one-pot chemical process.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic oxidation of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) provides a feasible way for high value utilization of biomass resources. However, how to regulate the selective synthesis of multiple value‐added products is still a great challenge. Cobalt‐based compound is a promising catalyst due to its direct and indirect oxidation properties, but its weak adsorption capacity restricts its further development. Herein, by constructing Ag‐Co(OH)2 heterogeneous catalyst, we realize the efficient and selective synthesis of 5‐hydroxymethyl‐2‐furanoic acid (HMFCA) and 2, 5‐furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) value‐added products at different potential ranges. Based on in‐situ infrared spectroscopy, quasi‐operando X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in‐situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, zeta potential, electrochemical measurements and density functional theory calculations, it is proved that the addition of Ag can effectively promote the oxidation of aldehyde group to carboxyl group, and then generate HMFCA at low potential. Moreover, the introduction of Ag can activate cobalt‐based compound, thus strengthening the adsorption of organic molecules and OH− species, and promoting the formation of FDCA. This work achieves the selective synthesis of two value‐added chemicals by one tandem catalyst and deeply analyzes the adsorption enhancement mechanism of the catalyst, which provides a powerful reference and guidance for the design and development of efficient multi‐component heterogeneous catalysts. Abstract:Lignin is the only renewable source of aromatic compounds in nature, and high value-added monophenolic compounds can be obtained by depolymerizing lignin. This work reported a facile strategy for preparation of monometallic and bimetallic nonprecious catalysts for hydrogenolysis of lignin. Both Ni/C and bimetallic Ni-Co/C catalysts are synthesized starting from gallate-based MOFs, namely, M-gallate (M = Ni, Co), as a self-sacrificing precursor for calcination treatment. Gallic acid was used as the supporter of metal and a carbon source for carbothermal reduction of metal oxide to form well-dispersed metal nanoparticles during the calcination process. The prepared catalyst was characterized by PXRD, XPS, and STEM. The bimetallic catalyst NixCo1-x/C could form an alloy structure to produce a synergistic catalytic effect and greatly improve catalytic activity of lignin depolymerization. The highest yield of monophenols with Ni0.5Co0.5/C catalysts can reach 55.2%, and the guaiacol selectivity was as high as 70.3%. The depolymerization reaction of the lignin model compound guaiacylglycerol-beta-guaiacyl ether (GG) revealed that the beta-O-4 bond will be selectively broken, and the benzene ring will not overhydrogenated with Ni/C and the Ni0.5Co0.5/C catalyst.

Abstract:The use of biomass as a carbon source to support metal oxides has significant advantages in reducing the cost of catalyst production and environmental protection. The key technology lies in the development of highly active and recyclable catalysts. In this paper, sugar was used as a carbon source, and cobalt oxide was loaded by the in-situ method and impregnation method to prepare the catalyst. The catalysts were characterized by scanning electron Microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), y, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman, In situ electron paramagnetic resonance (in-situ EPR) and nitrogen adsorption and desorption. The characterization results show that, the macroporous carbon-supported cobalt oxide catalyst prepared by the in-situ method has nanoparticles on the solid support, and the dispersion of cobalt oxide on the support is more uniform, compared with the catalyst prepared by the impregnation method. The reaction performance of the prepared catalyst was evaluated by the green oxidation of ethylbenzene (EB) to acetophenone (AP) as a probe reaction. Under the optimized reaction conditions, temperature (T) = 80 °C, m(catalyst): m(EB) = 0.15, n(H2O2): n(EB) = 14.4:1, t = 8 h, V(EB): V(CH3COOH) = 1:10, n(EB): n(KBr) = 10:1, the conversion of EB and the selectivity of AP were 84.1% and 81.3%, respectively. In the common reaction pathway of free radical and acid catalysis, Co/SC-10-in situ improved the reactivity of EB oxidation with the promotion of cobalt ions supported on the carbon support. Abstract:To form polymer-supported catalysts, to eliminate excess H2O2 during wastewater treatment, the assembly of metal ion on cellulose was investigated. Cellulose was covalently grafted with reactive azo-Schiff base containing azo-conjugated system, 3,5-bis {2-hydroxyphenyl-5-[(2-sulfate-4-sulfatoethylsulphonyl-azobenzol) methylene amino]} benzoic acid. Metal ions, Co2+, Mn2+, and Cu2+, were anchored to the modified cellulose by controlling assembly. The cellulose-supported complexes were characterized and the catalytic activity for H2O2 was investigated. Elemental analyses of the cellulose supported complexes, MC-Co, MC-Mn, were well agreed with the proposed composition. Three cellulose-supported complexes had strong catalytic activities for H2O2. H2O2 decomposition rates in 10min were 84.54% for MC-Co, 94.87%, for MC-Mn, and 77.21% for MC-Cu, respectively. The manganese complex had the strongest catalytic activity among them. The cellulose-supported complexes have potential application in wastewater treatment and biotechnology.
Synchronous Inverse Valence Modulation of Ni3+/Co2+ over Metal/metal-Oxide Heterojunction Catalyst to Promote Hydrodeoxygenation Performance of Lignin Derivatives

Abstract:The proper design of catalyst structure is crucial for highly selective hydrodeoxygenation. Here, a strategy of in-situ topological transformation was proposed to prepare a MOF/LDH composite self-sacrificial template mediated by NiCo-MOF template, and a metal-monomer/metal-oxide composite heterojunction catalyst was synthesized. The result indicated that the formation of Ni3+ species on the surface of t-NiCo-60 catalyst was generated through this unique structural transformation, which promoted the charge movement between Ni-Co and caused more Co2+ to be formed, and this simultaneous reverse valence modulation between Ni3+/Co2+ facilitated the generation of oxygen vacancies, which improved the hydrogen heterocleavage activation on the catalyst and enabled the t-NiCo-60 catalyst to remove oxygen-containing groups from lignin derivatives with high selectivity. Achieved complete conversion of lignin derivatives in a short duration of time and highly selective generation of the target products (92.5 % selectivity for cyclohexanol and 99.9 % selectivity for 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol). This research provides a new approach for the efficient upgrading of lignin derivatives.
Earth-abundant Co nanoparticles encapsulated in N -doped hollow carbon sphere for highly selective hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived vanillin

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oils to value-added biofuels is of great importance to efficient utilization of renewable biomass. Precisely tailoring the surface microenvironment of supported metal nanocatalysts plays a significant role in regulating the interaction between reactants and catalytic active sites and facilitates the acquiring of high-performance HDO catalysts for lignin upgrading. Herein, we report a step-economic synthesis of N-doped hollow carbon sphere encapsulated with Co nanoreactors (, X: 700-1000) via the template-directed in-situ crystallization of Co-based ZIF-67 (zeolite imidazolate framework) and pyrolysis process. The optimized nanocatalyst presented a 100% conversion and 96% selectivity towards valuable 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) biofuel through HDO of bio-oils-based vanillin. Such excellent catalytic performance was attributed to the specific structure properties and surface microenvironment of nanocatalysts. It was demonstrated that the electronic interaction between embedded Co nanoparticles and surface nitrogen species of NHCS nanoreactors constructed desired microenvironment and generated abundant surface Co active species, which could effectively enhance activation capabilities of reactants and intermediate, and achieve highly selective HDO of vanillin to MMP via promoted adsorptions of CO/CO bonds as confirmed by intrinsic kinetic evaluations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, a two-step of hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis tandem reaction pathway of vanillin HDO to MMP and the corresponding catalytic reaction mechanism were proposed. Besides, the hierarchical porous structure of NHCS facilitated the dispersion and stabilization of encapsulated Co nanoparticles and endowed nanocatalyst with good stability in recycling tests. This work provided new insights into rational design of efficient and stable metal nanocatalysts for biomass conversion.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of cellulose to liquid fuel and highly valuable platform chemicals remains a critical and challenging process. Here, bismuth-decorated β zeolite catalysts (Bi/β) were exploited for highly efficient hydrolysis and selective oxidation of cellulose to biomass-derived glycolic acid in an O2 atmosphere, which exhibited an exceptionally catalytic activity and high selectivity as well as excellent reusability. It was interestingly found that as high as 75.6% yield of glycolic acid over 2.3 wt% Bi/β was achieved from cellulose at 180 °C for 16 h, which was superior to previously reported catalysts. Experimental results combined with characterization revealed that the synergetic effect between oxidation active sites from Bi species and surface acidity on H-β together with appropriate total surface acidity significantly facilitated the chemoselectivity towards the production of glycolic acid in the direct, one-pot conversion of cellulose. This study will shed light on rationally designing Bi-based heterogeneous catalysts for sustainably generating glycolic acid from renewable biomass resources in the future.

Abstract:The creation of non-noble metal magnetically-separable heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of biomass to value-added products has received substantial attention. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of magnetically-separable cobalt catalyst embedded in hierarchically porous N-doped carbon nanospheres (Co@NC) by in situ non-noble metal nitrate-promoted pyrolysis reduction strategy using nitrogen/oxygen co-doped resin polymer spheres as precursors. The facile H2O2 post-treatment process increased surface oxygen-containing groups and improved hydrophilicity to disperse catalysts in aqueous solutions. Moreover, owing to the non-noble metal nanoparticles coated with a graphitic nitrogen-doped carbon layer, the as-prepared Co@NCH2O2 catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and stability of vanillin hydrodeoxygenation in aqueous solutions. This strategy can be extended to other non-noble metal nitrates like M@NCH2O2 (M = Co, Ni) within good recyclability, magnetically-separable ability, and general applicability for a broad substrate scope, further highlighting the superiority of our active catalysts.
