Abstract:Ultrafiltration hollow-fiber membranes were prepared from polyetherimide (PEI) with a wet spinning method. The effects of N,N-dimethylacetantide (DMAc) as a solvent additive in the internal coagulant and acetic acid as a non-solvent additive in the dope solution on the morphologies and performances of the membranes were investigated. The influences of PEI dope concentration on membrane morphologies and properties were also studied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicates that the addition of DMAc into the internal coagulant changes the inner fiber surface from a dense skin layer to a porous structure. However, the pure water flux of the membrane decreases with the increase of DMAc content. On the other hand, the addition of acetic acid into the casting solution promotes the spinodal demixing of the membratte-forming system and suppresses the macrovoid formation in the membrane. A nodular structure forms in the fiber skin layer. With increasing acetic acid content, the pure water flux of the membrane increases about 4-fold and the solute retention shows a slight decrease. The mechanical properties can also be improved slightly by this additive. The thermal resistance of the PEI ultrafiltration membranes prepared in this work was examined by hot water treatment at 80 degrees C. No change was observed in the permeation performance of the membranes, while the study of mechanical properties shows that the elongation-at-break of the membrane decreases slightly. PEI was sulfonated by chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) in 1,2-dichloroethane. With the increase of the molar ratio of CSA to PEI repeat unit and/or reaction time, the ion-exchange capacity (IEC) of the sulfonated polyetherimide (SPEI) increases accordingly. Water uptake test and contact angle measurements show that the hydrophillicity of the SPEI increases with the increase of the IEC. Polyetherimide/sulfonated polyetherintide (PEI/SPET) ultrafiltration hollow-fiber membranes were also prepared with a dry-wet phase inversion method and SPEI was used as a polymer additive. SEM study reveals that the addition of SPEI induces the formation of nodular structure and suppresses the formation of finger-like macrovoids. With the increase of air-gap distance, it was found that the number of micropores formed in the outer fiber surface and the pore size increased. On the other hand, the pure water flux of the membrane reaches a maximum and then decreases, while the solute retention decreases at first and then levels off at longer air-gap. Based on the filtration of bovine serum albuntin (BSA) solution, it was found that the use of SPEI in the blend membranes increased their hydrophilicity.
