Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of the coarse and fine aggregate on asphalt mixture homogeneity,based on the index of asphalt mixture homogeneity and as an example of AC-16,the effects of the aggregates retained on the 4.75 mm sieve and on the 2.36 mm sieve are respectively studied on asphalt mixture homogeneity.Results show that whether from the view of the index of asphalt mixture homoge-neity or variation of mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures,aggregate gradation influences asphalt mixture homogeneity,and it is more obvious that the aggregates retained on the 4.75 mm sieve influence asphalt mixture homogeneity than retained on the 2.36 mm sieve.

Abstract:The gradation and mechanical properties of aggregates impressively affect the load carrying capacity and rutting resistance of asphalt mixtures. They are able to provide some fundamental parameters that are linked to mixture performance. In order to accurately detect critical controlled sizes and obtain more fundamental parameters that can characterize load carrying capacity and rutting resistance of asphalt mixtures, this paper aims to develop a mechanics-based approach to evaluate aggregate gradation, which contains the theoretical packing analysis and discrete element simulation. An extended theoretical morphology framework is developed by checking the local and global interlock of graded aggregates in the theoretical packing analysis. The sieve size range of primary structure which has an interactive interlock can be determined in the local interlock check model. The relationship between the transferred force and the induced force is proposed in the densest and loosest packing arrangements, respectively. The morphological parameters of disruption factor and weighted average size for the global scale are also proposed in theoretical packing analysis. Then the discrete element method is used to validate the theoretical framework. The advanced gradation input algorithm procedure is established in the discrete element simulation to simulate the compression test of graded aggregates. The mechanical parameters of contact force, contact points and stress-strain curves are extracted from the simulation results. The results show that the discrete element method can validate the theoretical framework and output the performance related parameters. The contact force analysis shows that the aggregates retaining on sieve sizes of 2.36 and 4.75 mm provide more than 50% contribution to resist load, and the aggregates retaining on sieve sizes of 1.18, 0.6 and 0.3 mm provide more than 50% contribution to stabilize the structure. The coordination number analysis suggests that the gradation with more fine aggregates might lead to a greater number of voids but smaller air-void size when the asphalt content and porosity remain constant. The stress-strain curve analysis shows that the modulus and secondary strain are highly related to the rutting performance of an asphalt mixture. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Effects of Asphalt-Aggregate Ratios and Compaction Efforts on Horizontal Aggregate Homogeneity in Asphalt Mixtures

Abstract:Based on the index of aggregate homogeneity, the effects of asphalt-aggregate ratios and compaction efforts on the horizontal aggregate homogeneity in asphalt mixtures were investigated. Meanwhile, using a two-dimensional indirect tensile test (IDT) model of asphalt mixtures, established by means of a finite element method (FEM), the effects were analyzed from the viewpoint of numerical simulation and the obtained results were verified by an actual IDT. Results show that the horizontal aggregate homogeneity in asphalt mixtures is best with the optimum asphalt-aggregate ratio. With an increase in compaction effort, the horizontal aggregate homogeneity in asphalt mixtures improves, and there is an obvious relationship between variations in IDT mechanical parameters and horizontal aggregate homogeneity in asphalt mixtures. The greater the variation coefficient of mechanical parameters is, the worse the horizontal aggregate homogeneity is, and vice versa.

Abstract:Homogeneity is one of the most important factors affecting the performance-related properties of asphalt mixtures. Pavement condition surveys have shown various patterns of distresses due to segregation and other types of non-uniformity. Most of presently used test methods have limitations to evaluate asphalt mixture homogeneity and their test results usually have flaws. The main objective of this research is to investigate the index of asphalt mixture homogeneity using digital image processing, which includes three aspects: (1) to develop the index of homogeneity, (2) to categorize the index of homogeneity, and (3) to examine the main influence factors of the index of homogeneity. By the aggregate distributed situation, the aggregate distributed number the area ratio coefficient, and a gradation-related coefficient, a method for evaluating homogeneity of a cross section in asphalt mixtures was described in detail, and a method for evaluating the whole homogeneity was also presented. The research results indicate that based on digital image processing it is feasible to quantitatively evaluate asphalt mixture homogeneity through the index of homogeneity; the index of homogeneity can be classified by Empirical-Analytical method; aggregate gradation, asphalt content, compaction effort, and experimental temperature all influence the index of homogeneity.

Abstract:To address the shortage of the aggregate used in a hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavement in Guangxi, properties such as the aggregate crushing, polished stone, and Los Angeles abrasion values of a type of hard sandstone aggregate used in HMA were tested after various conditioning treatments. The hard sandstone aggregate met the technical requirements for aggregate in HMA. In addition, the influence of the Marshall compaction on the hard sandstone aggregate-combined grading was tested. The combined grading curve changed a little, and the aggregate satisfied the corresponding technical requirements. Therefore, according to the abovementioned results, the hard sandstone aggregate can be used as a coarse aggregate in HMA.

Abstract:Different characteristics of aggregates has significant impact on the high modulus mixture properties of hard asphalt (such as high temperature properties, modulus, and fatigue resistance). This paper chooses two kinds of aggregates (basalt and limestone) with obvious differences. Based on the Aggregate Image Measurement System (AIMS), this paper made detailed comparison and analysis on all characteristics of the two kinds of aggregates. Referring to the French high modulus mix design process, the various performance indicators coordinated design methods were tested on the high modulus mixture of hard asphalt. Results show that, it can be achieved a balanced design of high temperature performance, modulus, and fatigue resistance properties on the mixture thronging the gradation and the hard asphalt dosage adjustment, for different properties aggregate.
Evaluation of HMA with Coal Gangue Coarse Aggregate

Abstract:Coal gangue is the waste of coal mining. It is discharged and stacked all around the mine and the dust pollution has become a public hazard. This paper commits an investigation on the asphalt mixture which takes advantage of coal gangue as coarse aggregate. The physical-mechanical performances of coal gangue aggregate are presented and the result indicates that coal gangue aggregate can meet the specifications except the content of the Flat and Elongate particles (F&E content). By controlling the rational content of F&E in the mixture, different types of asphalt mixes with different percentage of coal gangue coarse aggregate are tested and the overall performance of asphalt mixture is investigated. The result testifies that the asphalt mixture containing coal gangue has the equivalent performance with limestone mixture. It is observed that the coal gangue used as coarse aggregate can guarantee the properties of HMA. Thus the HMA can be used in asphalt pavement.

Abstract:This article investigates the application of high-modulus asphalt mixtures (HMM-13) in the intermediate layer of pavement, addressing rutting issues in asphalt pavements subjected to heavy traffic and high temperatures. The study utilized a 1% dosage of high-modulus modifier, and initially, the mix design of HMM-13 was determined using the gyratory compaction method. Subsequently, this study evaluated the road performance of HMM-13 through tests, including the −10 °C beam bending test, rutting tests at 60 and 70 °C, the freeze–thaw splitting test, and the single-axis compression dynamic modulus test. To ensure the effectiveness of the mixture's on-site application, this study validated the raw material specifications at the construction site and adjusted the mix design accordingly. Water stability tests were also conducted. Finally, a survey of the mixing plant at the construction site was carried out, establishing the relationship between each bin's flow rate and speed ratio. The suitable speed for the production of HMM-13 was calculated. The research results indicate that the optimal asphalt-to-aggregate ratio for HMM-13 is 4.2% (with a comprehensive asphalt-to-aggregate ratio of 5.2%), and the freeze–thaw splitting strength ratio can reach 84.2%. The dynamic stability is 11,217 cycles/mm at 60 °C and 6167 cycles/mm at 70 °C. The stiffness modulus at −10 °C is 5438 MPa, with a failure strain of 2049 με. At 10 Hz and 15 °C, the dynamic modulus is 15,488 MPa, and at 45 °C, it is 3872 MPa. All these indicators meet the requirements for construction technology and pavement performance.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of different compaction methods on the water damage resistance, the air void and high-temperature stability of AC-13 asphalt mixture, Marshall compaction, roller wheel compaction, and gyratory compaction specimens were compacted with the same air void as the standard for comparative analysis. Then asphalt cement (AC)-13 (dense-graded), stone matrix asphalt (SMA)-13 (gap-graded), and porous asphalt concrete (PAC)-13 (open-graded) mixtures were compacted by gyratory compaction, and the gradation, compaction cycles, and initial compaction temperature, which affect the gyratory compaction characteristics of asphalt mixtures, were studied. The results show that the comprehensive compaction quality of the gyratory compaction specimen was the best considering the air void uniformity, uniaxial penetration strength (UPS), and residual Marshall stability of the three compaction methods. The slope of compaction degree and gyratory compaction times of gyratory compaction specimens can clearly reflect the ratio of compaction degree at different compaction phases. In this research, a new reasonable evaluation method for the laboratory compaction of an asphalt mixture is proposed, and the feasibility of using the corresponding fitting curves at different initial compaction temperatures to quickly determine the required gyratory compaction cycles to achieve the desired compaction degree is verified, which provides a reference for the evaluation of compaction methods and compaction characteristics of asphalt mixture specimens.

Abstract:In this paper, various brand heavy paving asphalts conforming to GB/T15180-94 standard have been prepared by blending-oxidizing Anshan vacuum residue, and their pavement performances have been evaluated. The laboratory test shows that the prepared AH-70 and AH-90 has the characteristics of good temperature susceptibility, good high-temperature stability and good low-temperature cracking resistance. The mathematic model of the relationship between penetration, softening point of the asphalt and the blender content has been set up and, the relationship between penetration, softening point and the oxidation time has been found. Those mathematic models built by gradual regression of the experiment data can be used to determine the adding amount of the two blenders. Fan daobo experiential equation, which described the relationship between softening point of the paving asphalt and its compositions, has been corrected and the corrected equation is more suitable for the prepared paving asphalts than Fan daobo experiential equation.

Abstract:This study performed laboratory experiments to evaluate the performance of porous asphalt mixtures (PAMs) containing recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). One open aggregate gradation with Class C fly ash as the filler, granite aggregate, two binder types (PG 67–22 and PG 76–22), and four RCA contents (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% by mass of aggregates in the sieve size range of 4.75 to 9.5 mm) were included in the experiments. The mixture properties evaluated include permeability and air-void content, Marshall stability and flow, indirect tensile strength, moisture susceptibility, Cantabro abrasion loss, macrotexture, and sound absorption coefficient. The study found that using a blend of granite and RCA in a PAM led to better performance in terms of indirect tensile strength, stiffness, moisture resistance, and resistance to raveling. This was particularly confirmed for PAMs with an unmodified PG 67–22 binder. The mixture that contained 30% RCA performed the most satisfactorily, with an indirect tensile strength of 0.81 MPa and a Marshall stability of 23 kN at 25 °C. These values were 37.5% and 15%, respectively, higher than the control mixture. Based on these results, the study recommends the use of 30% RCA in PAMs for the friction course of a highway pavement or the porous surface of a porous pavement.

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of two waste materials from construction and industry, namely recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and Type C fly ash, on the overall performance of a special type of pavement surface mixture, porous asphalt mixture. Mixtures of different combinations of RCA (for partial aggregate replacement) and fly ash (for filler replacement) were prepared in the laboratory and tested for a variety of pavement surface performance parameters, including air-void content, permeability, Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength, moisture susceptibility, Cantabro loss, macrotexture, and sound absorption. The analysis of the results showed that incorporating RCA or fly ash in a porous asphalt mixture slightly reduced the air-void content, permeability, and surface macrotexture of the mixture. A 10% replacement of granite aggregates with RCA in the porous asphalt mixtures led to a reduction in mixture stability, indirect tensile strength, resistance to raveling, and sound absorption. The further substitution of mineral filler with fly ash in the mixture, however, helped to offset the negative impact of RCA and brought the mechanical properties of the mixture with 10% RCA to levels comparable to those of the control mixture.

Feasibility Evaluation of Preparing Asphalt Mixture with Low-Grade Aggregate, Rubber Asphalt and Desulphurization Gypsum Residues

Abstract:Road construction consumes great amounts of high-grade natural resources. Using low-grade natural rocks or some solid wastes as substitute materials is a hot topic. Considering this, the feasibility of using low-grade granite aggregate, solid waste-based filler (desulphurization gypsum residues, DGR) and binder (waste tire rubber modified asphalt, RMA) simultaneously in asphalt mixtures has been fully investigated in this research. The commonly used base asphalt and limestone powder (LP) filler were control groups. Material characteristics of raw materials mainly including micro-morphology, functional group, mineral phase, chemical composition and thermal stability were first evaluated in order to recognize them. Four asphalt mixtures (two asphalt binder and two filler) were then designed by standard Superpave method. Finally, a detailed investigation into the pavement performance of asphalt mixtures was carried out. The moisture damage resistance and low-temperature crack resistance were detected by the changing rules of stability, strength and fracture energy, and the high-temperature stability and fatigue performance were determined by wheel tracking test and indirect tensile (IDT) fatigue test, respectively. Results suggested that RMA and DGR both showed positive effects on the low-temperature crack resistance and fatigue property of the granite asphalt mixture. DGR also strengthened moisture stability. The contribution of RMA on high-temperature deformation resistance of the granite asphalt mixture was compelling. It can offset the insufficiency in high-temperature stability made by DGR. A conclusion can be made that asphalt mixture prepared with granite, DGR and RMA possesses satisfactory pavement performances.
Performance Evaluation of Pouring Colored Cement-asphalt Composites

Abstract:Pouring cement-asphalt composite is generally described as an open-graded asphalt concrete mixture filled with cement grouts which is a unique combination of asphalt and cement concrete materials in the same layer.An asphalt mixture base with a high void volume was designed by volume design procedure,and optimum asphalt content of mixture was determined by Marshall test.Reasonable water/cement of grouts and reasonable grouting quantity in unit area were determined by Marshall stability and spitting strength of cement-asphalt composites at varying water/cement and grouting quantities.Dynamic stability of wheel track test was utilized to measure rutting resistance of cement-asphalt composites at high temperature;retained stability of Marshall test and spitting strength ratio of freezing and thawing test were used to measure its water susceptibility.The results show that the selected cement-asphalt composites have excellent rutting resistance and low water susceptibility.Cement-fly ash-asphalt composites by adding some fly ash into cement grouts also have good performance.
Interlocking Evaluation of Mesoscopic Skeleton with the Compaction Degree of Hot-Mix Asphalt

Abstract:Asphalt mixtures are multi-phase composites composed of aggregates, bitumen, mineral powders, and voids, and various structures are intertwined during the compaction process. Most of the traditional research focuses on the macro-scale domain, and it is difficult to obtain the internal structure of asphalt mixture in different compaction processes. With the continuous development of digital image technology, the influence of the meso-structure of the asphalt mixture on the compaction quality of the asphalt mixture has become a new means to evaluate the performance of the asphalt mixture. In this paper, different numbers of compactions are selected to represent different stages in the compaction process, the digital images of specimens in different compaction stages are obtained by industrial CT scanning technology. Then, the images are processed and reconstructed in three dimensions using improved image segmentation methods, and the position characteristics and geometric information of coarse aggregate are obtained by combining the Oriented Bounding Box (OBB). The meso-response characteristics of the skeleton structure of the asphalt mixture during compaction were studied. The influence of the internal structure of the mixture on the compaction quality of the mixture was obtained, which is of great significance for the study of improving the durability of the pavement. The results show that the "effective coordination number" (the number of aggregate particles that can transmit force in the skeleton structure) is greatly related to the aggregate size. With the compaction process, the centroid of coarse aggregate in the upper layer of the specimen reflects the overall downward movement trend. The inclination angle of the aggregate spindle tends to be in the range of 80°~100°; the anisotropic amplitude of the xy plane increases, and the direction of the aggregate spindle becomes more and more consistent. With the increase in the number of rotational compactions, these four parameters showed obvious rules, indicating that this meso-characteristic index could well characterize the compaction quality of the asphalt mixture in the compaction process.

Abstract:Stone matrix asphalt and asphalt concrete mixture with 13.2 mm nominal maximum aggregate size (named SMA13 and AC13, respectively) are widely used in the surface course of asphalt pavement in China. Generally, the pavement performance of SMA13 is superior to that of AC13, while the cost of the former is significantly higher than that of the latter. The objective of this paper was to develop a new hot mix asphalt (named SMAC13) whose performance and cost are between SMA13 and AC13. A boundary sieve size (BSS) of 2.36 mm was selected between fine and coarse aggregates. Based on the union set of aggregate gradation ranges of SMA13 and AC13, the family of gradation curves in the forms of S shapes were designed in terms of the BSS passing rate. According to the evaluation of the skeleton interlock of coarse aggregate of the gradation curve family, the aggregate gradation range of SMAC13 was determined. Also, the performance of three kinds of asphalt mixtures were compared through laboratory tests. The results indicated that SMA13 shows the best rutting resistance, followed by SMAC13 then AC13, while in terms of low-temperature performance in resistance to cracking, the sequence is SMAC13, AC13, and SMA13. The sequence of water stability is AC13, SMAC13, and SMA13. Furthermore, the cost of SMAC13 is 25% less than that of SMA13. Therefore, SMAC13 can be used as an alternative for the surface course of asphalt pavement in terms of performance and cost.

Abstract:The anti-rutting and anti-cracking performance of asphalt mixtures are a pair of contradictions that are difficult to coordinate. In order to ensure the rutting resistance of asphalt mixture to meet the requirements of the specification, while improving its deformation capacity and crack resistance. Based on the mortar performance, the Anti-rutting and High Ductility Asphalt Mixture with excellent anti-rutting performance and deformation performance was designed in this paper. With the filler-asphalt ratio as the control index, SBS modified asphalt and SHV modified asphalt was selected to design five asphalt mortars with different filler-asphalt ratios of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0. Variation laws of mortar technical indicators were investigated by rotational viscosity test, cone penetration test, and BBR test. Asphalt mixtures were prepared and a rutting test and small beam bending test were carried out to ensure the consistency of the mixture skeleton state by grouting molding. The influence of the mortar performance index on the road performance of the mixture was evaluated by conducting correlation analysis, and then an anti-rutting and high-ductility asphalt mixture was proposed based on mortar performance. The obtained results showed that the technical indicators of asphalt mortar had a good correlation with the filler-asphalt ratio, and the developed regression model could be used to determine the correlation and design of the mortars. The technical performance index of mortar was found to be directly correlated with the road performance index of the mixture. The developed anti-rutting and high-ductility asphalt mixture not only had good anti-rutting performance but also had good deformation capacity and cracking resistance. Its anti-rutting performance could meet the specification requirements, and the maximum flexural strain could reach 7161 με. The performance of asphalt mortar determines the road performance of the mixture. The rutting resistance and cracking resistance of the mixture could be coordinated by designing asphalt mortar to improve its comprehensive road performance. To guarantee that the dynamic stability of the mixture met the required specifications and the deformation ability was good, the critical value of each technical index of asphalt mortar was recommended.

Abstract:Asphalt binder is an important part of the asphalt pavement.The conventional method of evaluating asphalt binder road performance is the method of penetration.Strategic Highway Research Program(SHRP)of the United States has developed a new method of evaluating the performance of asphalt binder that is Superpave asphalt binder road performance grade(PG).The three major technical indicators of the specification of penetration is penetration,ductility,and softening point.The main indicators of the asphalt binder PG method is the high-temperature rutting factor,the mid-temperature fatigue factor,low-temperature creep stiffness,and the maximum tensile strain.Based on the difference of the two specifications,comparative study was conducted in two aspects:one is to analyze the similarities and differences from the macroscopic view,and the other one is to compare the similarities and differences in theoretical view from each of the major indicators.

Abstract:This study investigates the microscopic mechanism of the force on particles of different particle sizes in the asphalt mixture during rutting formation. The gradation was optimized by analyzing the particle force results. The enhanced discrete element method (EDEM) was used to simulate the rutting test, study the correlation state between different particle sizes in the rutting process, and analyze the rutting of asphalt pavement from the aggregate level. From a microscopic perspective, the specific forces acting on particles at different times were determined to investigate the particle size range of stressed particles in two types of asphalt mixtures. Furthermore, the role of particles with different sizes in the rutting process was analyzed. The force limit values of particles with different particle sizes are fitted, and the force of particles in two types of asphalt mixtures is compared and analyzed. After that, the gradation of the asphalt mixture is optimized, and the feasibility of the gradation optimization method is verified by laboratory experiments. The results show that the change rule of the rutting simulation test is gradually transformed from compacted rutting to unstable rutting. The force of the asphalt concrete-13 (AC-13) asphalt mixture is borne by the particles with a radius greater than 1.8 mm. The force of the stone matrix asphalt-13 (SMA-13) asphalt mixture is borne by the particles with a radius greater than 3.6 mm, and the small particle size particles play a filling role. When the particle radius is less than 5.1 mm, the force value of AC-13 asphalt mixture particles is greater than that of SMA-13. When the particle radius exceeds 5.1 mm, the force value of SMA-13 asphalt mixture particles is greater than that of AC-13. The force of particles with a radius of 5.7 mm and 7.3 mm in the SMA-13 asphalt mixture is 30% higher than that in AC-13, and the force limit of particles is proportional to the particle size. The dynamic stability, flexural tensile strength, water immersion residual stability, and freeze-thaw splitting strength ratios of the optimized asphalt mixture are improved compared with those before optimization. The AC-13 asphalt mixture is increased by 8.5%, 9.2%, 1.6%, and 1.9%, respectively, and the SMA-13 asphalt mixture is increased by 10.6%, 7.3%, 0.7%, and 2.1%, respectively. It shows that the grading optimization method is feasible.
