Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of the coarse and fine aggregate on asphalt mixture homogeneity,based on the index of asphalt mixture homogeneity and as an example of AC-16,the effects of the aggregates retained on the 4.75 mm sieve and on the 2.36 mm sieve are respectively studied on asphalt mixture homogeneity.Results show that whether from the view of the index of asphalt mixture homoge-neity or variation of mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures,aggregate gradation influences asphalt mixture homogeneity,and it is more obvious that the aggregates retained on the 4.75 mm sieve influence asphalt mixture homogeneity than retained on the 2.36 mm sieve.

Abstract:To study the methods of the low-noise asphalt pavement mixture mix design,the paper design used gradation and optimum asphalt content as the two main design specifications of low-noise asphalt pavement mixture design.The search used the table as aggregate grading design and determined the best asphalt content by comparative analysis of theoretical calculations,flow test and asphalt fell tests.The results showed that:Mixture of air voids resulted in using the table had a good linear correlation with target air void.The way of determining the best asphalt content using flow test is more consistent with actual project and easy to spread.

Abstract:In order to study the effectiveness of new type modified asphalt additive SBP on pavement performance of asphalt mixture, the experiments were carried out to evaluate the mixing and compaction temperature, high-temperature stability and water stability of SBP modified asphalt mixture. The high-temperature stability of the SBP modified asphalt mortar was studied by DSR. The heating temperature of mineral aggregate and the asphalt mixture mixing temperature and compacted temperature were determined by three different temperature asphalt mixture SCB test, which were got SGC (Superpave Gyratory Compactor). The wheel tracking test of asphalt mixture was carried to evaluate the high-temperature stability and freeze-thaw split test were studied the water stability. Through the wheel tracking test and water stability test in harsh condition, the high-temperature stability and water stability was evaluated again. It can be concluded that SBP can improve the pavement performances of asphalt mixtures.

Abstract:Stone matrix asphalt and asphalt concrete mixture with 13.2 mm nominal maximum aggregate size (named SMA13 and AC13, respectively) are widely used in the surface course of asphalt pavement in China. Generally, the pavement performance of SMA13 is superior to that of AC13, while the cost of the former is significantly higher than that of the latter. The objective of this paper was to develop a new hot mix asphalt (named SMAC13) whose performance and cost are between SMA13 and AC13. A boundary sieve size (BSS) of 2.36 mm was selected between fine and coarse aggregates. Based on the union set of aggregate gradation ranges of SMA13 and AC13, the family of gradation curves in the forms of S shapes were designed in terms of the BSS passing rate. According to the evaluation of the skeleton interlock of coarse aggregate of the gradation curve family, the aggregate gradation range of SMAC13 was determined. Also, the performance of three kinds of asphalt mixtures were compared through laboratory tests. The results indicated that SMA13 shows the best rutting resistance, followed by SMAC13 then AC13, while in terms of low-temperature performance in resistance to cracking, the sequence is SMAC13, AC13, and SMA13. The sequence of water stability is AC13, SMAC13, and SMA13. Furthermore, the cost of SMAC13 is 25% less than that of SMA13. Therefore, SMAC13 can be used as an alternative for the surface course of asphalt pavement in terms of performance and cost.

Abstract:Extending the service life of asphalt pavements was an effective way to be a green environment and conserve resources. Gradation significantly affects the service life of asphalt mixtures . This paper aimed to investigate the influence of gradation on micro properties and the engineering performance of the mixture. Four representative gradations in the gradation range of AC-16 were selected. The fractal dimensional was used to characterize the quality distribution properties of the aggregates. The sensitivity of the Marshall index of the different graded mixtures to the asphalt aggregate ratio was investigated. CT scan tests were carried out to study the distribution pattern of microscopic properties. The high-temperature performance, low-temperature performance, water stability performance, indirect tensile strength , and fatigue performance of the four mixtures were also tested. The findings suggest that the effective asphalt aggregate ratio range differed for different gradation mixtures. The optimum asphalt aggregate ratio should be determined by settings the appropriate asphalt aggregate ratio step size. The fractal model can well characterize the quality distribution of aggregates. The larger the fractal dimension value, the smaller the air voids, and the higher the number of contact points of the mixture, high-temperature performance, strength, and fatigue performance. The low-temperature performance showed the opposite pattern. The water stability performance was not linearly related to the fractal dimension value. The performance of the mixture can be preliminarily predicted by analyzing the fractal dimension of the gradation.

Abstract:In order to study the influences, the favorable gradations are put forward to provide a guidance in road building, the properties of six kinds of stress-absorbing layer mixture with different gradations are studied in the lab. With the same high-viscous-asphalt and improved Superpave mix design method, the fatigue performance and low temperature performance of stress-absorbing layer mixture are tested. The results show that AC-graded and gap-graded stress-absorbing layer mixtures are more flexible at low temperature, they have better tensile performance and fatigue performance. Furthermore, the asphalt content of AC-graded and gap-graded stress-absorbing layer mixtures is not so abundant compared with others. So these two kinds of gradation should be adopted firstly in engineering project. 9 tabs, 1 fig, 9 refs.

Abstract:To determine the optimal asphalt content in porous asphalt mixtures, the drain-down experiments together with theContabro and Marshall test have been done in the lab. As a result, it is possible to determine the optimal asphalt content by synthesizing the results of these three tests. Also, in order to study the influence of aggregate gradation on the performance of the pavement, four different gradations with different components of aggregate are designed. Then, their road performance was studied; and this included anti-rutting, water stability permeability and skid resistance with optimal asphalt content. Consequently, it was found that the influence of aggregate gradation on performance is obvious. Therefore, an appropriate gradation with a good air void content is important to ensure satisfactory performance of porous asphalt mixtures. Meanwhile, the test results show that the mixture with air void gradation ratio ranging from 18% to 24% has betteranti-rutting, water stability, permeability and skid resisting performance.

Abstract:To investigate the microstructure of asphalt concrete,a new method was proposed to analyze the distribution properties of coarse aggregates.Based on the digital image processing and computational geometry,delaunay triangulation method was used to generate the centroid of the coarse aggregates which square sieve size larger than 2.36mm.Then,coarse aggregate-asphalt bind area ratio(A1/A2) for each delaunay triangle was calculated by statistics theory.The A1/A2 varies with different gradations,therefore,it can be used to represent the local character of the hot mixture asphalt(HMA) microstructure.According to the statistic analysis,it indicates that the total mass and each graded mass of the coarse aggregates both significantly influence the microstructural character of HMA.The central tendency and skewness of A1/A2 is helpful to judge the dense degree of the coarse aggregate skeleton,and the nonparametric tests can further provide the possibility of classifying the microstructure of the HMA.By comparing three different gradations,such as stone matrix asphalt(SMA),open graded friction course(OGFC),and superpave(SUP),it shows SMA has the largest dense degree of coarse aggregates distribution,and SUP appears the least dense degree characteristic.Furthermore,SMA and OGFC have similar type of microstructure while SUP's type is different from others.

Abstract:In this study, the road performance of hot in-place recycled asphalt mixture is systematically evaluated through laboratory tests. Four kinds of asphalt mixtures are selected for the study: AC-10 before regeneration, AC-16 before regeneration, AC-10 after regeneration, and AC-16 after regeneration. The high-temperature and low-temperature properties of the asphalt mixture before and after regeneration are evaluated by rutting test, semi-circular bending test, and small beam bending test. The freeze-thaw splitting test, four- point bending fatigue test, and dynamic modulus test are used to determine the water stability, fatigue life, and uniaxial compression dynamic modulus of the asphalt mixture before and after regeneration. The results show that the asphalt mixture before and after regeneration has better high-temperature performance, and the low-temperature performance and water stability of the asphalt mixture before regeneration were poor. The fatigue life of the mixture before regeneration is low and prone to brittle fracture. And the low-temperature performance, water stability, fatigue performance of the asphalt mixture after regeneration is better. The results of the study have important guiding significance for the research of hot in-place recycled asphalt mixtures.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of different compaction methods on the water damage resistance, the air void and high-temperature stability of AC-13 asphalt mixture, Marshall compaction, roller wheel compaction, and gyratory compaction specimens were compacted with the same air void as the standard for comparative analysis. Then asphalt cement (AC)-13 (dense-graded), stone matrix asphalt (SMA)-13 (gap-graded), and porous asphalt concrete (PAC)-13 (open-graded) mixtures were compacted by gyratory compaction, and the gradation, compaction cycles, and initial compaction temperature, which affect the gyratory compaction characteristics of asphalt mixtures, were studied. The results show that the comprehensive compaction quality of the gyratory compaction specimen was the best considering the air void uniformity, uniaxial penetration strength (UPS), and residual Marshall stability of the three compaction methods. The slope of compaction degree and gyratory compaction times of gyratory compaction specimens can clearly reflect the ratio of compaction degree at different compaction phases. In this research, a new reasonable evaluation method for the laboratory compaction of an asphalt mixture is proposed, and the feasibility of using the corresponding fitting curves at different initial compaction temperatures to quickly determine the required gyratory compaction cycles to achieve the desired compaction degree is verified, which provides a reference for the evaluation of compaction methods and compaction characteristics of asphalt mixture specimens.

Abstract:Pure crumb rubber asphalt mixture using dry process has certain requirement of mineral gradation with the potential disadvantage of uneven mixing under the traditional temperature. In this paper the gradation design of asphalt mixture Sup-13 mixed with TOR and crumb rubber using dry process was studied with the Superpave design method, pavement performance of asphalt mixture including high temperature stability, cracking resistance at low temperature and water stability was tested in the experiment. Results show that Superpave design method is suitable for the research on the asphalt mixture of TOR and rubber, with getting moving stability 3682 times/mm, failure strain 2573.8με, residual stability 84.8% and the ratio of freeze-thaw splitting 80.1%. The performance is so good to meet the requirements for asphalt pavement performance.

Abstract:In order to make up for inadequacies such as high energy cost in the production process and quantities of waste gas and dust release of hot-mix asphalt (HMA), warm-mix asphalt (WMA) has been developed. In this paper, the preparation process of WMA mixture is simply introduced. According to the experimental approach of asphalt binder and asphalt mixture, EC-120 is preliminarily selected as a follow-up research object after a rheological property test and a viscosity test of five kinds of warm-mix-agent-modified asphalts combined with cost analysis. A target mix proportion of SBS~AC-16 is designed, and then through the orthogonal design of the four parameters of the Marshall test of WMA mixture, such as mixing temperature, warm-mix-agent content, compaction blows, and mixing time, the best Marshall test parameters are obtained. The results show that the best parameters are 145 °C of mixing temperature, 3% of warm-mix-agent content, 75 compaction times, and 90 s of mixing time. This study can provide technical support and reference for the construction of WMA pavement in China.

Abstract:The preparation and evaluation of 30# hard grade asphalt by blending softening point hard deoil asphalt with several soft components were investigated. The results showed that the properties and proportions of blending soft components had a great influence on the properties of 30# asphalt. Chunfeng 70# asphalt and Maoming deoil asphalt were more suitable as blending soft components and their blended asphalt met the technical requirements of GB/T 15180-2010 when the proportion of hard deoil asphalt were 6-12% and 8-16%, respectively. PG grade results indicated that dynamic modulus of 30# asphalts at high temperature increased significantly, and antirutting ability was also improved notably, while the bending resistant ability at low temperature was slightly inferior to the high-grade asphalt. The results of mix performance tests showed that 30# hard grade asphalt had excellent anti-high-temperature deformation ability and preferable water stability compared with high-grade asphalts.

Abstract:The asphalt mixture designed with the Marshall mix design method has stable quality and convenient technical management, but the design range of the asphalt-aggregate ratio is small and difficult to adjust, and is therefore difficult to adapt to the design of functional pavement materials with different requirements. In order to solve these problems, the asphalt-filler volume equivalent substitution method (the volume equivalent substitution method) has been proposed. Based on the optimum asphalt-aggregate ratio of the Marshall method, the asphalt-aggregate ratio in the mixture is increased by the equal volume substitution of asphalt and filler. The increase in the asphalt volume is equal to the decrease in the filler volume, and vice versa. With the condition of constant aggregate gradation, the modified asphalt of asphalt mixtures with filler contents of 6.0%, 4.5%, 3.0%, 1.5%, and 0% is designed based on the AC-13 gradation. Based on this, a high-temperature stability test, a low-temperature crack resistance test, a four-point bending fatigue test, and other tests are carried out for the asphalt mixtures. The results show that the dynamic stability of each mix proportion designed with the volume equivalent substitution method is 4924 times/mm even under the most unfavorable conditions (the filler dose is 0%). The maximum bending tensile strain of the specimen with a 0% filler dosage can reach 9667 μ, which is more than twice that of the specimen with a 6% filler dosage. The fatigue test shows that increasing the asphalt content in the mixture is beneficial for improving fatigue durability. The research results show that the material designed by the volume equivalent substitution method has excellent road performance in each proportion. This paper provides a method for the flexible adjustment of the asphalt-aggregate ratio and the asphalt mixture comprehensive road performance. Using this method, the optimum asphalt-aggregate ratio needs to be determined comprehensively according to the stress characteristics and functional requirements of the pavement and the pavement performance index of the mixture, and further research is still needed.

Abstract:Porous asphalt pavements have a skeletal structure with a large number of interconnecting pores, which can improve drainage, ensure traffic safety, and reduce tire noise. However, it can weaken the mechanical properties of the pavement. One of the key factors affecting the performance of porous asphalt pavements is the quality of compaction, the assessment of which is difficult to accurately quantify. Therefore, Superpave gyratory compaction (SGC) and skeleton penetration tests of porous asphalt mixtures were carried out using three engineering-differentiated gradations in this paper to investigate the gyratory compaction characteristics and the skeleton contact state during penetration. The results show that obvious stages with the increase in number of cycles can be observed during the compaction process. All gradations can achieve the maximum porosity requirements within a reasonable number of compaction cycles, while only the medium and fine gradations can approximately meet the minimum porosity requirements. The coarse gradation takes too long to finish compaction and is almost impossible to meet the minimum porosity. The optimum match between the void ratio of the design gradation and the skeleton contact state can be verified using the VCA ratio and void ratio curves. This is a new method to determine the corresponding target compaction number that can ensure better accuracy and ease of engineering application. Moreover, medium-graded mixtures with better skeletal embedding exhibit greater skeletal strength than coarse-graded aggregates, which provide theoretical support for the establishment of material grade optimization methods.

Abstract:This paper using the fractal theory to study the gradation fractal dimension characteristics of AC-13-Graded asphalt mixture.According to the result of water stability test,high temperature stability test,Studying of the correlation between fractal characteristics of gradation and mixture performance.The results show that: with the gradation became thick,AC-13-Graded asphalt mixture fractal dimension is gradually diminishing.The value of fractal dimension can be used to describe its graded status.At the same time,there were certain correlation between the fractal dimension and the mixture water stability and high-temperature stability.

Abstract:The durability of asphalt mixture is one of the main indicators of the mechanical performance of asphalt pavement. Three kinds of composite modified asphalts (4%SBS/3%SBR, 4%SBS/15% rubber powder and 4%SBR/15% rubber powder) were chosen as binders. Three kinds of aggregate gradation (AC-13, AC-16, AC-20) were used to design composite modified asphalt mixture. The durability (ageing, accumulation and fatigue) of composite modified asphalt mixture was compared and analysed. The study includes comparative study on mechanical performance of composite modified asphalt with different ageing time (0, 5 and 20 h), comparative study on plastic deformation accumulation of composite modified asphalt mixture with different loading times and comparative study on fatigue characteristics of different composite modified asphalt mixtures based on strain. The findings have some theoretical and practical values for increasing the durability of asphalt pavement.
