Abstract:X-ray CT (computed tomography) was used to scan asphalt mixture specimen to obtain high resolution continuous cross-section images and the meso-structure. According to the theory of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction, the 3D reconstruction algorithm was investigated in this paper. The key to the reconstruction technique is the acquisition of the voxel positions and the relationship between the pixel element and node. Three-dimensional numerical model of asphalt mixture specimen was created by a self-developed program. A splitting test was conducted to predict the stress distributions of the asphalt mixture and verify the rationality of the 3D model.

Abstract:The gradation and mechanical properties of aggregates impressively affect the load carrying capacity and rutting resistance of asphalt mixtures. They are able to provide some fundamental parameters that are linked to mixture performance. In order to accurately detect critical controlled sizes and obtain more fundamental parameters that can characterize load carrying capacity and rutting resistance of asphalt mixtures, this paper aims to develop a mechanics-based approach to evaluate aggregate gradation, which contains the theoretical packing analysis and discrete element simulation. An extended theoretical morphology framework is developed by checking the local and global interlock of graded aggregates in the theoretical packing analysis. The sieve size range of primary structure which has an interactive interlock can be determined in the local interlock check model. The relationship between the transferred force and the induced force is proposed in the densest and loosest packing arrangements, respectively. The morphological parameters of disruption factor and weighted average size for the global scale are also proposed in theoretical packing analysis. Then the discrete element method is used to validate the theoretical framework. The advanced gradation input algorithm procedure is established in the discrete element simulation to simulate the compression test of graded aggregates. The mechanical parameters of contact force, contact points and stress-strain curves are extracted from the simulation results. The results show that the discrete element method can validate the theoretical framework and output the performance related parameters. The contact force analysis shows that the aggregates retaining on sieve sizes of 2.36 and 4.75 mm provide more than 50% contribution to resist load, and the aggregates retaining on sieve sizes of 1.18, 0.6 and 0.3 mm provide more than 50% contribution to stabilize the structure. The coordination number analysis suggests that the gradation with more fine aggregates might lead to a greater number of voids but smaller air-void size when the asphalt content and porosity remain constant. The stress-strain curve analysis shows that the modulus and secondary strain are highly related to the rutting performance of an asphalt mixture. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Homogeneity is one of the most important factors affecting the performance-related properties of asphalt mixtures. Pavement condition surveys have shown various patterns of distresses due to segregation and other types of non-uniformity. Most of presently used test methods have limitations to evaluate asphalt mixture homogeneity and their test results usually have flaws. The main objective of this research is to investigate the index of asphalt mixture homogeneity using digital image processing, which includes three aspects: (1) to develop the index of homogeneity, (2) to categorize the index of homogeneity, and (3) to examine the main influence factors of the index of homogeneity. By the aggregate distributed situation, the aggregate distributed number the area ratio coefficient, and a gradation-related coefficient, a method for evaluating homogeneity of a cross section in asphalt mixtures was described in detail, and a method for evaluating the whole homogeneity was also presented. The research results indicate that based on digital image processing it is feasible to quantitatively evaluate asphalt mixture homogeneity through the index of homogeneity; the index of homogeneity can be classified by Empirical-Analytical method; aggregate gradation, asphalt content, compaction effort, and experimental temperature all influence the index of homogeneity.
Effects of Asphalt-Aggregate Ratios and Compaction Efforts on Horizontal Aggregate Homogeneity in Asphalt Mixtures

Abstract:Based on the index of aggregate homogeneity, the effects of asphalt-aggregate ratios and compaction efforts on the horizontal aggregate homogeneity in asphalt mixtures were investigated. Meanwhile, using a two-dimensional indirect tensile test (IDT) model of asphalt mixtures, established by means of a finite element method (FEM), the effects were analyzed from the viewpoint of numerical simulation and the obtained results were verified by an actual IDT. Results show that the horizontal aggregate homogeneity in asphalt mixtures is best with the optimum asphalt-aggregate ratio. With an increase in compaction effort, the horizontal aggregate homogeneity in asphalt mixtures improves, and there is an obvious relationship between variations in IDT mechanical parameters and horizontal aggregate homogeneity in asphalt mixtures. The greater the variation coefficient of mechanical parameters is, the worse the horizontal aggregate homogeneity is, and vice versa.

Abstract:Porous asphalt pavements have a skeletal structure with a large number of interconnecting pores, which can improve drainage, ensure traffic safety, and reduce tire noise. However, it can weaken the mechanical properties of the pavement. One of the key factors affecting the performance of porous asphalt pavements is the quality of compaction, the assessment of which is difficult to accurately quantify. Therefore, Superpave gyratory compaction (SGC) and skeleton penetration tests of porous asphalt mixtures were carried out using three engineering-differentiated gradations in this paper to investigate the gyratory compaction characteristics and the skeleton contact state during penetration. The results show that obvious stages with the increase in number of cycles can be observed during the compaction process. All gradations can achieve the maximum porosity requirements within a reasonable number of compaction cycles, while only the medium and fine gradations can approximately meet the minimum porosity requirements. The coarse gradation takes too long to finish compaction and is almost impossible to meet the minimum porosity. The optimum match between the void ratio of the design gradation and the skeleton contact state can be verified using the VCA ratio and void ratio curves. This is a new method to determine the corresponding target compaction number that can ensure better accuracy and ease of engineering application. Moreover, medium-graded mixtures with better skeletal embedding exhibit greater skeletal strength than coarse-graded aggregates, which provide theoretical support for the establishment of material grade optimization methods.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the influence of aggregate homogeneity on the indirect tensile (IDT) strength of asphalt mixtures using imaging and discrete-element method. An aggregate homogeneity index, which was used to assess the aggregate homogeneity in asphalt mixtures, was briefly described, and the aggregate homogeneities of different asphalt specimens were assessed by the index. A micromechanical model for predicting the IDT strength was established by a discrete-element program called Particle Flow Code in Three Dimensions. On the basis of this model and by loading asphalt specimens along different directions, the influence of aggregate homogeneity on the IDT strength at low temperatures was simulated; the simulation results were verified by an actual IDT test. Results show that the IDT strength exhibits anisotropy. There is no obvious correlation between the aggregate homogeneity and the IDT strength. Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of aggregate gradation, asphalt content and loading velocity on the indirect tensile test (IDT) strength of asphalt mixtures using three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM). A microstructure-based cohesive zone discrete element model for predicting the IDT strength at 20 degrees C was established by a discrete element program called Particle Flow Code in Three Dimensions. Based on this model, the effects of aggregate gradation, asphalt content and loading velocity on the IDT strength were numerically simulated. The simulation results were verified by performing an actual IDT test. Results reveal that the IDT test at 20 degrees C can be simulated well based on the cohesive zone DEM. Furthermore, the IDT strength of asphalt mixtures is remarkably affected by the aggregate gradation, asphalt content and loading velocity.

Abstract:Compaction is a critical step in asphalt pavement construction. The objective of this study is to analyze the mesoscale mechanical behaviors of coarse aggregates in asphalt mixtures during gyratory compaction through experiments and numerical simulation using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). A novel granular sensor (SmartRock) was embedded in an asphalt mixture specimen to collect compaction response data, including acceleration, stress, rotation angle and temperature. Moreover, the irregularly shaped coarse aggregates were regenerated in the DEM model, and numerical simulations were conducted to analyze the evolution of aggregate interaction characteristics. The findings are as follows: (1) the measured contact stress between particles changes periodically during gyratory compaction, and the amplitude of stress tends to be stable with the increase of compaction cycles; (2) the contact stress of particles is influenced by the shape of aggregates: flat-shaped particles are subjected to greater stress than angular, fractured or elongated particles; (3) the proportion of strong contacts among particles is high in the initial gyratory compaction stage, then decreases as the number of gyratory compactions grows, the contacts among particles tending to homogenize; (4) during initial gyratory compactions, the normal contact forces form a vertical distribution due to the aggregates’ gravity accumulation. The isotropic distribution of contact forces increases locally in the loading direction along the axis with a calibrated internal angle orientation (1.25°) in the earlier cyclic loading stage, then the local strong contacts decrease in the later stage, while the strength of the force chains in other directions increase. The anisotropy of aggregate contact force networks tends to weaken. In other words, kneading and shearing action during gyratory compaction have a positive impact on the homogenization and isotropy of asphalt mixture contact forces.

Abstract:Aggregates in contact constitute the skeleton of the asphalt mixture and affect load transmission in the mixture, which determines its deformation resistance. The objective of this study is to characterize the aggregate skeleton for the evaluation of the stability of the asphalt mixture. The methodology has four main steps: (1) aggregates in specimens are three-dimensionally (3D) reconstructed before surface triangulation; (2) the geometry and orientation of contact areas between aggregates are detected to obtain the contact network of aggregates; (3) effective contacts are identified to determine force chains represented by a weighted directed graph; and (4) all force chains constitute the aggregate skeleton, which is then evaluated for load transfer efficiency by the characterization of the skeleton. Simulations of compression tests on three virtual specimens with different skeletons were conducted to obtain the stress and strain distribution within the mixture. The results indicate that a skeleton with a higher evaluation index has a more uniform stress and strain distribution, which indicates that the mixture bears the load better to resist deformation. The proposed method also facilitates the study of the correlation between the mixture stability and the gradation and morphology of aggregates.

Abstract:To provide a reference for the gradation-refined design of asphalt mixtures, pore cellular structure model was developed to evaluate the meso-structure of asphalt mixture, and corresponding meso-structural evaluation indices of the coarse aggregate main skeleton and asphalt mortar interference were obtained. Then three different asphalt mixtures were selected to study the influence of gradation and asphalt mortar performance on the meso-structure of pore cellular structures. The gradual behaviour characteristics of the meso-evaluation indices subjected to load, as well as the correlation between the main skeleton meso-evaluation indices and macro deformation were studied. The results indicated that gradation is a key determinant of the contact point, number of pore cells, and area of pore cell distribution. Under the action of loads, the number of contact points and pore cells within the asphalt mixture increase, interference coefficient decreases, and skeleton rate increases gradually; coarse aggregates with contact that are not involved in the pore cellular structure are the main factor affecting skeleton rate. Meso-structural evaluation indices including interference coefficient and skeleton rate can effectively evaluate the meso-structure of the asphalt mixture, ensure that the coarse aggregates are interlocked with each other to form a stable main skeleton.

Abstract:Particle media are widely used in engineering and greatly influence the performance of engineering materials. Asphalt mixtures are multi-phase composite materials, of which coarse aggregates account for more than 60%. These coarse aggregates form a stable structure to transfer and disperse traffic loads. Therefore, knowing how to adjust the structural composition of coarse aggregates to optimize their performance is the key to optimize the performance of asphalt mixtures. In this study, the effects of different roughness and different sizes on the interlocking force and contact force of coarse aggregates were investigated through means of simulation (DEM), and then the formation-evolution mechanism of the coarse aggregate structure and the role of different sizes of aggregates in the coarse aggregate structure were analyzed. Subsequently, the optimal ratio of coarse aggregates was explored through indoor tests, and finally, the gradation of asphalt mixture based on the optimization of fine structure was formed and verified through indoor tests. The results showed that the major model can effectively reveal the role of different types of aggregates in the fine structure and the relationship between the strength of contact forces between them and clarify that the strength of the fine structure increases with the increase in aggregate roughness. Hence, the coarse aggregate structure can be regarded as a contact force transmission system composed of some strong and sub-strong contact forces. Their formation-evolution mechanism can be regarded as a process of the formation of strong and sub-strong contact forces and the transformation from sub-strong contact force to strong contact force. Moreover, the dynamic stability of the optimized graded asphalt mixture was increased by 30%, and the fracture toughness was increased by 26%.

Abstract:The digital image processing technique is implemented to build the geometrical model, and several factors such as the properties of asphalt mastic, the size and volume content of coarse aggregate, the size and ratio of air voids, and aggregate gradations are considered in the model. In the geometrical model, the aggregate are drawn as the equivalent ellipses in order to improve the efficiency of numerical calculation. The numerical method fast multipole boundary element method is employed to predict the elastic modulus of the asphalt concrete, and the test results are compared to verify the accuracy of the established geometrical model and numerical method.

The classification of the index of homogeneity was listed and discussed. In the end, the main influence factors of the index of homogeneity were quantitatively analyzed. The research results indicate that based on digital image processing it is feasible to quantitatively evaluate asphalt mixture homogeneity through the index of homogeneity which is determined by the aggregate distributed situation, the aggregate distributed number, the area ratio coefficient, and a gradation-related coefficient; the index of homogeneity can be classified by Empirical-Analytical method; aggregate gradation, asphalt content, compaction effort, and experimental temperature all influence the index of homogeneity.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of different compaction methods on the water damage resistance, the air void and high-temperature stability of AC-13 asphalt mixture, Marshall compaction, roller wheel compaction, and gyratory compaction specimens were compacted with the same air void as the standard for comparative analysis. Then asphalt cement (AC)-13 (dense-graded), stone matrix asphalt (SMA)-13 (gap-graded), and porous asphalt concrete (PAC)-13 (open-graded) mixtures were compacted by gyratory compaction, and the gradation, compaction cycles, and initial compaction temperature, which affect the gyratory compaction characteristics of asphalt mixtures, were studied. The results show that the comprehensive compaction quality of the gyratory compaction specimen was the best considering the air void uniformity, uniaxial penetration strength (UPS), and residual Marshall stability of the three compaction methods. The slope of compaction degree and gyratory compaction times of gyratory compaction specimens can clearly reflect the ratio of compaction degree at different compaction phases. In this research, a new reasonable evaluation method for the laboratory compaction of an asphalt mixture is proposed, and the feasibility of using the corresponding fitting curves at different initial compaction temperatures to quickly determine the required gyratory compaction cycles to achieve the desired compaction degree is verified, which provides a reference for the evaluation of compaction methods and compaction characteristics of asphalt mixture specimens.

Abstract:The compaction of asphalt pavement is a crucial step to ensure its service life. Although intelligent compaction technology can monitor compaction quality in real time, its application to individual asphalt surface courses still faces limitations. Therefore, it is necessary to study the compaction mechanism of asphalt pavements from the particle level to optimize intelligent compaction technology. This study constructed an asphalt pavement compaction model using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). First, the changes in pavement smoothness during the compaction process were analyzed. Second, the changes in the angular velocity of the mixture and the triaxial angular velocity (TAV) of the mortar, aggregates, and mixture during vibratory compaction were examined. Finally, the correlations between the TAV amplitude and the coordination number (CN) amplitude with the compaction degree of the mixture were investigated. This study found that vibratory compaction can significantly reduce asymmetric wave deformation, improving pavement smoothness. The mixture primarily rotates in the vertical plane during the first six passes of vibratory compaction and within the horizontal plane during the seventh pass. Additionally, TAV reveals the three-dimensional dynamic rotation characteristics of the particles, and the linear relationship between its amplitude and the pavement compaction degree aids in controlling the compaction quality of asphalt pavements. Finally, the linear relationship between CN amplitude and pavement compaction degree can predict the stability of the aggregate structure. This study significantly enhances quality control in pavement compaction and advances intelligent compaction technology development.

Abstract:Large stone porous asphalt mixes (LSPMs) have the characteristics of large gaps, large content of coarse aggregate, and large particle size of coarse aggregate. Compared with the traditional asphalt-treated base (ATB), LSPM forms a more obvious skeleton structure in the process of bearing load. In this study, the discrete element method (DEM) model of LSPM is established, and an evaluation method for studying the bearing capacity and high-temperature performance of LSPM through an internal skeleton network is proposed. Firstly, the DEM model of asphalt mixture with different gradations is established, and the virtual uniaxial penetration test is carried out. Then, the performance of the skeleton network inside the asphalt mixture is analyzed, and the contribution of each group of aggregates to the skeleton network is further studied. The experimental results show that the bearing capacity of an asphalt mixture is closely related to the performance of internal skeleton network. The skeleton network inside the asphalt mixture is extracted by the value of the contact force, the angle between the contacts, and the contact continuity. When the skeleton network has better bearing capacity and load-transfer capacity, the asphalt mixture can bear more external load in the virtual penetration test. The contribution of different coarse aggregates to the skeleton network is analyzed from four perspectives: total contact force, vertical work, contact number, and effective coordination number. The aggregates of 19–26.5 and 4.75–9.5 mm constitute the main body of the load-transfer path and play a major role in bearing and transmitting the load in the skeleton network.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement compaction is important, and it can determine the service quality as well as durability of pavement. In recent years, numerical methods have been extensively used to simulate and study the construction process of asphalt pavement and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures. In the following sections, the compaction process, considering the interaction between the materials and the equipment, is simulated, and the influence of different compaction methods on the mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures is investigated. To achieve this goal, a pre-compaction model is developed using the Discrete Element Method (DEM), and the models of both materials and the paving machine are generated separately. After the pre-compaction simulation, the theory of bounding surface plasticity is combined with the theory of Finite Element Method (FEM) as well as with a kinematic model of a roller drum to simulate the asphalt mixture behavior during a roller pass. In order to ensure consistency both in the laboratory compaction and in-situ compaction, the Aachen compactor has been developed. The effect of different compaction methods (Field, Aachen and Marshall Compactions) on the asphalt specimens is compared and evaluated using the microscale FEM.

Abstract:To investigate the microstructure of asphalt concrete,a new method was proposed to analyze the distribution properties of coarse aggregates.Based on the digital image processing and computational geometry,delaunay triangulation method was used to generate the centroid of the coarse aggregates which square sieve size larger than 2.36mm.Then,coarse aggregate-asphalt bind area ratio(A1/A2) for each delaunay triangle was calculated by statistics theory.The A1/A2 varies with different gradations,therefore,it can be used to represent the local character of the hot mixture asphalt(HMA) microstructure.According to the statistic analysis,it indicates that the total mass and each graded mass of the coarse aggregates both significantly influence the microstructural character of HMA.The central tendency and skewness of A1/A2 is helpful to judge the dense degree of the coarse aggregate skeleton,and the nonparametric tests can further provide the possibility of classifying the microstructure of the HMA.By comparing three different gradations,such as stone matrix asphalt(SMA),open graded friction course(OGFC),and superpave(SUP),it shows SMA has the largest dense degree of coarse aggregates distribution,and SUP appears the least dense degree characteristic.Furthermore,SMA and OGFC have similar type of microstructure while SUP's type is different from others.

Abstract:<p>The aggregate skeleton significantly influences the deformation resistance of asphalt mixtures. A stable skeleton has good interlocking effects and load transfer ability to resist deformation of mixtures during loading. Therefore, the methodology to accurately evaluate the morphology of aggregate skeleton based on the mechanism of load transfer inside mixtures is of great value to predict the mixture stability. The objective of this study is to predict and validate mixture stability from the perspective of evolutional morphologies of the skeleton. The methodology has three main steps, which are as follows: (1) the initial morphology of the aggregate skeleton is characterized and evaluated; (2) the topological and non-topological evolutions of the skeleton morphology during external loading are characterized; and (3) the strain energy of the mixture and the stress distribution on contact regions in the skeleton are used to analyze and validate the prediction of the mixture's stability. Simulations of uniaxial displacement-controlled tests of three cylindrical specimens drilled in a field-compacted test track were conducted, and 7.5, 15, 22.5, and 30 s were selected as time points in the simulation to analyze mixture stability. Results indicate that a mixture has a better load-bearing capacity when its initial skeleton contains more chains with higher evaluation indices, which proves the reliability of the stability prediction using the proposed method.</p>

Effect of Smart Aggregate Size on Mesostructure and Mechanical Properties of Asphalt Mixtures

Abstract:In recent years, smart aggregates have emerged as a promising tool for monitoring the movement of and changes in particles inside asphalt mixtures. However, there remain significant differences between smart aggregates and real rock aggregates, particularly the lack of an asphalt coating on the surface of smart aggregates. Currently, the research on the impact of smart aggregates themselves on the structure and properties of asphalt mixtures is lacking. Therefore, this study focuses on the influence of smart aggregate size on the mesostructure and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures. Firstly, based on laboratory tests and the discrete element method (DEM), discrete element models of asphalt mixture specimens containing smart aggregates of various sizes were constructed, followed by simulated compaction tests. The effects of smart aggregate size on the mesostructure of asphalt mixture voids were then analyzed. Lastly, in this study, the changes in the dynamic modulus of asphalt mixtures were explored with increasing smart aggregate size and the underlying mechanisms. The results indicate that as the size of smart aggregates increases, the average void ratio of the asphalt mixture specimens decreases, but the heterogeneity of the void distribution increases. Additionally, with the increase in smart aggregate size, the dynamic modulus of the mixture specimens decreases. Further strain analysis of the specimens suggests that the increase in cross-sectional deformation is the primary cause of the reduction in modulus.
