Abstract:The carbon nanotube (CNT) is a compelling and promising material for industrial applications requiring high strength and rigidity. For a multi-walled CNT (MWCNT), the nominal tensile strength and Young's modulus (considering the whole cross-sectional area of the specimen) are key mechanical factors for the practical application of macroscopic fibers and composites. However, the nominal tensile strength and Young's modulus of MWCNTs are much lower than their effective tensile strength and Young's modulus (considering the fracture cross-sectional area) because the outermost graphite layer always fractures first due to the low cross-link between graphite layers. In this paper, we fabricated the carbon nanofibers (CNFs) by epitaxial growth on super-aligned MWCNT film template and conducted in situ uniaxial tensile tests on individual carbon-nanotube-templated CNFs. The individual CNFs show improved nominal mechanical performance than previously reported MWCNTs. The nominal mechanical properties enhancement of the CNFs is attributed to the effective control on load transfer between interwalls.

Abstract:Mechanical properties of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced epoxy composites enhanced with a small quantity of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were investigated. 1wt.% MWCNTs were well dispersed in the epoxy matrix and the CF prepregs were manufactured using fiber filament wind process. The hybrid MWCNT/CF/epoxy composites were fabricated by laying up of fiber prepregs. Tensile properties, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and microstructures of the composites were investigated. The results show that the addition of MWCNTs into the composites improved the tensile properties and ILSS with much reduced dispersity. Enhancing mechanisms behind these were elucidated.

Abstract:The simultaneous in-situ growth of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and densification of a CNFs/CF hybrid multiscale felt are accomplished in a single step by thermal gradient chemical vapor infiltration using Fe as the catalyst and vaporized kerosene under atmospheric pressure. A three-dimensional CNF network which could bridge dissimilar components of composites is formed on carbon fibers (CFs). The length of CNFs can reach several micrometers and the diameters are about 80 rim. Smooth and rough surface densified CNFs can be produced after further higher temperature infiltration. CNFs, anchoring to CFs by the adherence of the catalyst nanoparticles, enhance the bonding between CFs and pyrocarbon as well as promoting the formation of a rough laminar pyrocarbon matrix. The deposition mechanisms and physical model are also discussed. This fast catalytic infiltration process can be applied to other ceramic materials and has significant enlargement potential.
A Novel Continuous Carbon Nanotube Fiber/carbon Composite by Electrified Preform Heating Chemical Vapor Infiltration

Abstract:The extraordinary mechanical and physical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have provided the impetus in developing a new promising CNT/carbon (CNT/C) composite, which may effectively alleviate the shortcomings of sharp-angle and thin-walled C/C components in mechanical performance. Present researches on preparing CNT/C composites focus on infiltrating pyrocarbon into CNT assemblies such as array, block, sheet, film, and buckypaper using complicated and time-consuming methods. Here, we report a facile and efficient strategy for preparing CNT fiber/C composites via electrified preform heating chemical vapor infiltration. Densification process is identified as continual deposition of pyrocarbon around CNTs (called coaxial structure) and further deposition among them, which can be accomplished in short time. Small-diameter (below 500 nm) coaxial structures give composites high deformability; larger ones coupled with bridging action of pyrocarbon among them result in better load transfer and more conductive pathways. Optimized CNT fiber/C composites demonstrate impressive tensile strength (205 MPa) and excellent conductivity (431 S/cm), which are comparable to the previously reported C/C and CNT/C composites. Moreover, such composites exhibit lightweight (1.21 g/cm(3)), good deformability and high fracture strain. Our work could open up a general strategy for efficiently fabricating various high-performance CNT/C composites that could be used in high-temperature aerospace fields. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Single Carbon Fibers with a Macroscopic-Thickness, 3D Highly Porous Carbon Nanotube Coating

Abstract:Carbon fiber (CF) grafted with a layer of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) plays an important role in composite materials and other fields; to date, the applications of CNTs@CF multiscale fibers are severely hindered by the limited amount of CNTs grafted on individual CFs and the weak interfacial binding force. Here, monolithic CNTs@CF fibers consisting of a 3D highly porous CNT sponge layer with macroscopic-thickness (up to several millimeters), which is directly grown on a single CF, are fabricated. Mechanical tests reveal high sponge-CF interfacial strength owing to the presence of a thin transitional layer, which completely inhibits the CF slippage from the matrix upon fracture in CNTs@CF fiber-epoxy composites. The porous conductive CNTs@CF hybrid fibers also act as a template for introducing active materials (pseudopolymers and oxides), and a solid-state fiber-shaped supercapacitor and a fiber-type lithium-ion battery with high performances are demonstrated. These CNTs@CF fibers with macroscopic CNT layer thickness have many potential applications in areas such as hierarchically reinforced composites and flexible energy-storage textiles.

Abstract:Schematic diagram of nanoparticle preparation Poor interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers (CF) and the resin matrix has been a limiting factor in advancing the properties of composites. To address this challenge, this study employs the sizing method to coat carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h‐BN) onto the CF surface. The 3D structures formed by strategic of combination 1D and 2D nanomaterials, markedly enhances the mechanical, thermal and frictional properties of CF composites. The results reveal a significant boost in the flexural strength, flexural modulus, interlaminar shear strength and interfacial shear strength of the prepared CF composites, registering increases of 53.96%, 60.41%, 55.58% and 55.35%, respectively. These advancements stem from the heightened surface reactivity and roughness of the fibers, facilitated by the synergistic interactions between CNTs and BN. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of the composites exhibits a remarkable increase of 63.56%, attributed to the synergistic coupling between CF and BN, establishing an efficient thermal conductivity pathway within the composites. This research provides a highly effective approach for crafting high‐performance CF composites. Highlights Construction of 3D network structures on CF surfaces by the sizing method. Hexagonal Crystalline Nanofillers Reinforced Composite Carbon Nanofibers with Optimized Crystal Structure and Improved Mechanical Properties

Abstract:The mechanical properties of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are always restricted by their disorganized crystal structures. Herein, this paper utilizes two typical hexagonal crystalline flake materials, nanoscale flake graphite (NG) and hexagonal nitride boron (BN), as nanofillers to optimize the crystal domains of CNFs and achieves enhancement in fiber strength, modulus and toughness. For this purpose, in situ polymerization technique is developed for the rapid and uniform mixing of nanofillers with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursors of CNFs. The nanofillers are exfoliated in this process and wrapped with PAN to prevent potential agglomeration. The obtained core-shell nanocomposites can be produced into composite CNFs via electrospinning, stabilization and carbonization. Based on the attraction effect, the dispersed nanofillers can organize PAN molecular chains into oriented crystalline fibrils in as-spun nanofibers and accelerate their transformation to more ladder structures in stabilized nanofibers. On this basis, NG is shown to act as the templating and nucleating agent to promote the formation, growth and compact stacking of graphitic planes in CNFs. BN also improves fiber crystallinity, while its limited templating effect leads to looser and finer crystal domains. As a result, NG-doped CNFs have significantly improved strength and modulus, and BN-doped CNFs possess simultaneously enhanced strength and toughness.

Abstract:Nanocarbon (carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene (GN)) composites attract considerable research interest due to their fascinating applications in many fields. Here, recent developments in the field of in situ chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for the design and controlled preparation of advanced nanocarbon composites are highlighted, specifically, CNT-reinforced bulk structural composites, as well as CNT, GN, and CNT/GN functional composites, together with their practical and potential applications. In situ CVD is a very attractive approach for the fabrication of composites because of its engaging features, such as its simplicity, low-cost, versatility, and tunability. The morphologies, structures, dispersion, and interface of the resulting nanocarbon composites can be easily modulated by varying the experimental parameters (such as temperature, catalysts, carbon sources, templates or template catalysts, etc.), which enables a great potential for the in situ synthesis of high-quality nanocarbons with tailored size and dimension for constructing high-performance composites, which has not yet been achieved by conventional methods. In addition, new trends of the in situ CVD toward nanocarbon composites are discussed.
Study on C/C composites modified by in-situ vapor-grown carbon nanofibers

Abstract:Carbon nanofibers(CNFs) were in situ grown on the surface of carbon/carbon composites with different density by chemi-cal vapor deposition (CVD). In order to seek the optimal process, the influences of different parameters on the CNFs microstructure were investigated and discussed. Using the C/C composites modified by in-situ grown CNFs and pure C/C composites as the research objects, the growth mechanism of in-situ grown CNFs was described and the graphitization degree,the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of two samples were respectively tested and analysed to study the modification mechanism of CNFs reinforced C/C composites. The results show that the CNFs prepared with the Ni(NO3)2 solution concentration of 0.10 mol/L as catalyst precursor heated at 650~700℃for 30~45 min have many advantages, the diameter is small and uniform in 30~60 nm, length to diameter ratio is large, and the dispersibility is good. Under the same density, the bending strength of CNFs-C/C composites reached to 166.29 MPa, which was higher 26.2%than that of pure C/C composites (131.73 MPa). Therefore, the bending performance of CNFs-C/C com-posites was significantly improved. The room temperature z direction thermal conductivity of in-situ grown CNTs modified C/C com-posites is about 14.50 W/(m·K) ,which is 1.85 times that of pure C/C composites.

Abstract:Aligned carbon nanotube/carbon (Acnt/C) nanocomposites have been fabricated by densifying an Acnt preform with chemical vapour infiltration technology. Microstructure observations show that pyrocarbon in Acnt/C was mainly rough lamella type while pyrocarbon in carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix (C/C) composites was typically smooth lamella type in spite of the same process. The thermal conductivity of these Acnt/C nanocomposites is about 4 times that of C/C composites. Their electrical conductivity of Acnt/C nanocomposites was anisotropic, i.e. approximately 1.61×104Ω−1m−1 and 5.68×103Ω−1m−1 in the direction parallel and vertical to the aligned carbon nanotubes, respectively.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) reinforced cement composites (MWFRCs) were prepared with surfactant dispersion, ultrasonic treatment, and subsequently high-speed shear mixing processes. These MWFRCs were characterized in the fracture toughness property with single edge notch bend method. As found, the addition of nanotubes improves the stress-intensity factor (K IC), critical crack mouth opening displacement (δ C) and flexural strength (σ s) of the cured nanocomposite, significantly. The maximal enhancement arrives up to 56.4%, 119.4%, and 54.8%, compared to the baseline, respectively. These achievements are mainly attributed to the superior pulling-out effect of dispersed and tough MWNT fiber upon the notched cracks. Incorporation of acid-treated MWNT balances the σ s, K IC, and δ C values. Additional nanophase carbon black mixed into the above MWFRC further increases the corresponding fracture toughness, while additional short carbon fiber shows a negative effect. © EDP Sciences, 2011.

Abstract:A method to fabricate continuous and aligned multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT)/epoxy composites is presented in this paper. CNT/epoxy composites were made by infiltrating an epoxy resin into a stack of continuous and aligned multiwalled CNT sheets that were drawn from super-aligned CNT arrays. By controlling the amount and alignment of the continuous multiwalled CNT sheets, a CNT/epoxy composite with high content of well-dispersed CNTs can be obtained. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results show that the thermal stability of these CNT/epoxy composites was not affected by the addition of CNTs. The mechanical properties and electrical properties of the CNT/epoxy composites were dramatically improved compared to pure epoxy, suggesting that the CNT/epoxy composites can serve as multifunctional materials with combined mechanical and physical properties.
Highly Strong and Conductive Carbon Fibers Originated from Bioinspired Lignin/Nanocellulose Precursors Obtained by Flow-Assisted Alignment and In Situ Interfacial Complexation

Abstract:Composite filaments comprised of lignin and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were fabricated by a microfluidic spinning technique together with in situ interfacial complexation. The hierarchical assembly of well-ordered lignin/CNFs cross-linked using chitosan by ionic bonds resulted in the high orientation degree and compact microstructure of the filament, which was a promising precursor of carbon fibers. After stabilization and carbonization, bio-based carbon fibers with fine graphite microcrystals were obtained and carbon lattice was highly oriented along the fiber direction, contributing to the superior macro-performance. When the content of lignin was 75 wt %, the tensile strength and electrical conductivity of the carbon fibers reached 1648 MPa and 185.3 S/cm, respectively, surpassing the most reported values in the literature. Furthermore, a combined TG-FTIR approach was applied to further analyze the carbonization process of lignin/CNF precursors. The excellent mechanical and electrical performance of the bio-based carbon fibers would broaden their applications as a reinforcing agent and an electrical device. Abstract:The carbon nanofibers (Cnfs) dispersed SiC-Cnfs composite powder has been produced by spray freeze-granulation technique. SiC-based hybrid composite tubes (BN-Cf/SiC-Cnfs) were fabricated by systematically laying of boron nitride-coated continuous carbon fiber (BN-Cf) in the SiC-Cnfs composite matrix. High-density hybrid composite tubes were processed by cold isostatically pressing (CIP) of the afore-mentioned powder in a specially designed mold followed by pressureless sintering. The detailed processing techniques highlighting the criticality of each processing-step have been discussed. The implication of the processing techniques on the structure and properties of the composites were analyzed by using SEM, FTIR, and XRD, highlighting the matrix microstructure and the interfacial bonding of fiber with the matrix. In addition, the influence of newly evolved secondary-phases, Cnfs dispersion, long Cf reinforcement on optimization of properties of the hybrid composites was discussed in detail highlighting TEM analysis. The fractographic analysis of the hybrid composite tubes was carried out to understand the influence of long fibers on the improvement of fracture toughness of the nanofibers containing hybrid composite matrix. The fracture toughness and the other mechanical properties of the base matrix were found to improve significantly due to the combined contribution of specially laid long fibers in nanofibers containing matrix.

Abstract:Long aligned carbon nanotube (ACNT) arrays over 4 mm thick were prepared by chemical vapor deposition by adjusting processing parameters. ACNT/C composites were fabricated by densifying the ACNTs with chemical vapor infiltration, and were characterized by SEM, PLM, XRD, TGA and Raman spectroscopy. It was found that the pyrocarbon was mainly of the rough lamella type for ACNT/C composites compared with the typically smooth lamella type for traditional carbon/carbon (C/C) composites, in spite of using the same process. Pyrocabon around CNTs showed a high degree of crystallization. The temperature at which ACNT/C composites began to show a weight loss in air was about 50 degrees C higher than that for C/C composites.

Abstract:Carbon nanofiber (CNF), as one of the most important members of carbon fibers, has been investigated in both fundamental scientific research and practical applications. CNF composites are able to be applied as promising materials in many fields, such as electrical devices, electrode materials for batteries and supercapacitors and as sensors. In these applications, the electrical conductivity is always the first priority need to be considered. In fact, the electrical property of CNF composites largely counts on the dispersion and percolation status of CNFs in matrix materials. In this review, the electrical transport phenomenon of CNF composites is systematically summarized based on percolation theory. The effects of the aspect ratio, percolation backbone structure and fractal characteristics of CNFs and the non-universality of the percolation critical exponents on the electrical properties are systematically reviewed. Apart from the electrical property, the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of CNF composites are briefly reviewed, as well. In addition, the preparation methods of CNFs, including catalytic chemical vapor deposition growth and electrospinning, and the preparation methods of CNF composites, including the melt mixing and solution process, are briefly introduced. Finally, their applications as sensors and electrode materials are described in this review article.
Carbon Nanotube As the Core of Conical Carbon Fiber: Fabrication, Characterization and Field Emission Property

Abstract:Conical carbon fibers (CCFs) with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as their cores were grown on graphite substrates with a chemical vapor deposition method. The CNT-cored CCFs were about several tens of micrometers in length. In the interaction with a probe system, the CNT core filaments demonstrated good mechanical strength. Furthermore, field emission currents around 100 μA were also attained from individual CNTs. The growth mechanism of this CNT/CCF combined structure is briefly discussed. Our method has provided a convenient and inexpensive approach to mass assembling CNTs to a carbon substrate.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes have unprecedented mechanical properties as defect-free nanoscale building blocks, but their potential has not been fully realized in composite materials due to weakness at the interfaces. Here we demonstrate that through load-transfer-favored three-dimensional architecture and molecular level couplings with polymer chains, true potential of CNTs can be realized in composites as Initially envisioned. Composite fibers with reticulate nanotube architectures show order of magnitude improvement in strength compared to randomly dispersed short CNT reinforced composites reported before. The molecular level couplings between nanotubes and polymer chains results in drastic differences in the properties of thermoset and thermoplastic composite fibers, which indicate that conventional macroscopic composite theory falls to explain the overall hybrid behavior at nanoscale.

Abstract:In this study, multiscale MWCNT–glass fiber fabric (MGFf) preforms with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed onto commercial E-glass fiber fabric (GFf) was used to fabricate the MGFf multiscale composites. The mechanical properties, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), dynamic viscoelasticity and thermal conductivity of MGFf multiscale composites were investigated using a universal material testing machine, dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer and transient plane source method. Furthermore, the reinforcing mechanisms of MWCNTs on interlaminar adhesion of MGFf multiscale composites were explored using scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Compared with the GFf composite, the ILSS and thermal conductivity of MGFf multiscale composites were increased by 40.5% and 55.3%, respectively; both of the tensile and flexural properties of MGFf multiscale composites were significantly enhanced; the glass transition temperature of MGFf multiscale composites was also raised. In addition, the interface thickness was increased with the addition of MWCNTs, and MWCNTs in MGFf multiscale composites behaved as hooked fibers to improve the interlaminar adhesion. The work demonstrates the great promise of MGFf preforms toward practical industrial application in manufacturing multifunctional fiber composites with high strength and modulus, high shear resistance and good thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Five carbon nanofiber(CNFs)reinforced carbon composites containing 0,5%,10%,15% and 20% CNFs were prepared in order to investigate the effect of CNFs addition on the performance of C/C composites.The results show that the CNF-reinforced carbon composites exhibit higher mechanical properties than the composites without CNFs addition,the flexural strength of the composite with 5% of CNFs is increased by nearly 76.3% and the flexural modulus is increased by nearly 55.5% compared to that of the composite containing no CNFs.Increasing the CNFs content to 20%,both the flexural strength and flexural modulus decrease from their maximum values at 5% loading.
