Abstract:A metal-free hydrogenation of 2-quinolinecarboxylates has been realized by using 5 mol% of B(C6F5)(3) as catalyst. A variety of tetrahydroquinolines were obtained in 57-99% yields. Abstract:This study reports on the thiourea dioxide catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of diverse C=N–containing heterocyclic compounds with Hantzsch ester as the hydrogen source. With this cost effective and readily available catalyst, a wide range of 2-substituted quinolines, 3-substituted-2H-1,4-benzoxazines and 3-substituted-2H-1,4-benzothiazines were efficiently reduced to the corresponding tetrahydroquinolines, dihydro-2H-benzoxazines and dihydro-2H-benzothiazines under mild conditions.

Abstract:A simple and readily available cyclopentadiene-based Bronsted acid was employed to catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of 2-substituted quinolines using Hantzsch ester as the hydrogen source. Abstract:The 2-substituted-1,2,3,4-tetrahvdroquinoline skeletons are widely found in natural products and have shown antimalarial, antioxidant as well as other biological activities. In this work, MIL-101(Cr)-SO3 H is an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the transfer hydrogenation of a series of 2-substituted quinoline derivatives with Hantzsch ester as the hydrogen source. This protocol operates under mild conditions, tolerates a wide range of 2-substituted quinoline derivatives, and the catalyst could be recovered and reused four times without considerable loss of catalytic activities, which provides a new catalytic system for the construction of 2-substituted-1,2,3,4-tetrahvdroquinoline derivatives.

Abstract:Regio- and chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of isoquinolinium salts catalyzed by [Cp*RhCl2](2) using HCOOH-Et3N (5:2) as a hydrogen source was realized. Abstract:Chiral tetrahydroquinoxalines and dihydroquinoxalinones represent the core structure of many bioactive molecules. Herein, a simple and efficient Rh-thiourea-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation for enantiopure tetrahydroquinoxalines and dihydroquinoxalinones was developed under 1 MPa H pressure at room temperature. The reaction was magnified to the gram scale furnishing the desired products with undamaged yield and enantioselectivity. Application of this methodology was also conducted successfully under continuous flow conditions. In addition, H NMR experiments revealed that the introduction of a strong Brønsted acid, HCl, not only activated the substrate but also established anion binding between the substrate and the ligand. More importantly, the chloride ion facilitated heterolytic cleavage of dihydrogen to regenerate the active dihydride species and HCl, which was computed to be the rate-determining step. Further deuterium labeling experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that this reaction underwent a plausible outer-sphere mechanism in this new catalytic transformation.

Abstract:The pursuit of a powerful strategy to enable chemoselective transfer hydrogenation reaction of quinolines to their corresponding tetrahydroquinolines is of great significance, but it remains a challenge. Herein, we have realized heterogeneous photocatalytic chemoselective transfer hydrogenation reaction of quinolines to their corresponding tetrahydroquinolines over the developed hierarchical NiO/In2O3–CdS microspheres with high activity and selectivity under visible light irradiation and mild conditions, in which benzyl alcohol serves as a hydrogen donor to replace high-pressure flammable molecular hydrogen. More interestingly, the experimental and theoretical calculation results confirm that NiO acts as active sites for this photocatalytic transfer hydrogenation reaction, and it adsorbs and activates benzyl alcohol far more effectively than the metallic Ni. It breaks through the traditional concept that the metallic Ni serves as photocatalytically active sites for the effective activation of benzyl alcohol. This work not only presents an efficient strategy for the production of tetrahydroquinolines via heterogeneous photocatalytic chemoselective transfer hydrogenation reaction of quinolines but also paves a way for designing other heterogeneous photocatalytic systems toward chemoselective transfer hydrogenation reaction of diverse N-heterocycles.

Abstract:Thiourea itself has been introduced as a mild and efficient organocatalyst for the oxidative alpha-cyanation of N-aryltetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs) with trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN), giving the corresponding products in good to excellent yields. Experimental investigations demonstrated that thiourea acts as a radical initiator by abstracting hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) from tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) directly instead of non-covalent hydrogen bondings (H-bondings) activation. Abstract:The pursuit of modern sustainable chemistry has stimulated the development of innovative catalytic processes that enable chemical transformations to be performed under mild and clean conditions with high efficiency. Herein, we report that gold nanoparticles supported on TiO(2) catalyze the chemoselective hydrogenation of functionalized quinolines with H(2) under mild reaction conditions. Our results point toward an unexpected role for quinolines in gold-mediated hydrogenation reactions, namely that of promoter; this is in stark contrast to what prevails in the traditional noble metal Pd-, Pt-, and Ru-based catalyst systems, in which quinolines and their derivatives typically act as poisons. As a result of the remarkable promotional effect of quinoline molecules to H(2) activation over supported gold, the transformation can proceed smoothly under very mild conditions (even at temperatures as low as 25 °C). Of practical significance is that various synthetically useful functional groups including halogens, ketone, and olefin remain intact during the hydrogenation of quinolines. Moreover, the protocol also shows promise for the regiospecific hydrogenation of the heterocyclic ring of a variety of other biologically important heteroaromatic nitrogen compounds, such as isoquinoline, acridine, and 7,8-benzoquinoline, in a facile manner. Apart from its importance in catalytic hydrogenation, we believe that this intriguing self-promoted effect by reactant molecules may have fundamental implications for the broad field of gold catalysis and form the basis for development of new catalytic procedures for other key transformations.

Abstract:A stable iridium catalyst bearing a chiral 2-pyridyl imidazoline ligand is described for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of quinolines and N-heteroaryl compounds. This ATH system employs formic acid as the hydrogen source and water as the solvent.
