Abstract:A metal-free hydrogenation of 2-quinolinecarboxylates has been realized by using 5 mol% of B(C6F5)(3) as catalyst. A variety of tetrahydroquinolines were obtained in 57-99% yields. Abstract:Several cobalt(II) complexes supported by tetradentate aminobenzimidazole (N4) ligands and a tridentate nitrogen (N3) ligand have been prepared and characterized. X-ray crystallographic analysis indicates that the cobalt complex of BPMB (BPMB=1,2-bis((S)-2-(1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl) pyrrolidin-1-yl)ethane) ligand shows a distorted octahedral configuration. These cobalt(II) complexes can catalyze the transfer hydrogenation reaction of simple olefins with ammonia borane as a hydrogen source, and a variety of terminal olefins can be reduced to corresponding alkanes in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. Note that Co-N3 complex provides an inferior outcome than those of Co-N4 complexes.

Abstract:Raney nickel catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of nitrile was proposed, with formats as hydrogen donor. Three ionic liquids, including [DBUH+][C2H5COO-], [DBUH+][C3H7COO-], and [DBUH+][C4H9COO-], were prepared as reaction medium, and [DBUH+][C4H9COO-] showed the best performance. Various nitriles were reduced with potassium formate as hydrogen donor, and considerable to excellent yields of amines were given. The ionic liquid can be used for 6 times at least, and the reaction process is clean.

Abstract:Regio- and chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of isoquinolinium salts catalyzed by [Cp*RhCl2](2) using HCOOH-Et3N (5:2) as a hydrogen source was realized. Abstract:An amide‐substituted quinuclidine‐borane has been identified as a more efficient hydridic hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalyst for the hydroalkylation of unactivated olefins under visible light irradiation. Mechanistic studies reveal that the reaction yield correlates well with the association constant between the borane catalyst and the carbonyl substrate. Comprehensive Summary An amide‐substituted quinuclidine‐borane has been identified as a more efficient hydridic hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalyst for the hydroalkylation of unactivated olefins under visible‐light irradiation. 1H NMR titration experiments reveal that the amide moiety of the quinuclidine‐borane catalyst forms stronger hydrogen bonds with the carbonyl substrates, thereby improving the reaction yields. Furthermore, it was found that the reaction yields correlate well with the association constant between the quinuclidine‐borane catalyst and the carbonyl substrate. A scale‐up reaction using a continuous‐flow photoreactor has also been demonstrated.

Abstract:A metal-free asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of unprotected indoles was successfully realized using a catalyst derived from HB(C6F5)2 and (S)-tert-butylsulfinamide with ammonia borane as a hydrogen source. Abstract:Iridium complexes containing quinoline-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been synthesized by the transmetalation route from silver carbene precursors. The silver complexes undergo a facile reaction with [Ir(COD)Cl](2) (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) to yield a series of carbene complexes [(NHC)Ir(COD)Cl] (NHC = 3-methyl-1-(8- quinolylmethyl)imidazole-2-ylidene (2a); 3-n-butyl-1-(8-quinolylmethyl)imidazole-2-ylidene (2b); 3-benzyl-1-(8-quinolylmethyl)imidazole-2-ylidene (2c); 1,3-di(8-quinolylmethyl)imidazole-2- ylidene (2d). The coordinated COD was replaced by carbon monoxide to yield the corresponding carbonyl species [(NHC)Ir(CO)(2)Cl] (3). Complexes 2 and 3 have been characterized by IR, ESI-MS, H-1 and C-13 NMR and elemental analyses. The molecular structures of complexes 2b and 2c have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Two analogous Ir(I) complexes 5 and 6 with naphthalene-containing NHC have also been synthesized and characterized. These Ir(I) complexes in the current work have been proved to be active catalysts in the transfer hydrogenation of ketones to alcohols using 2-propanol as the hydrogen source. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Tandem ammonia borane dehydrogenation and nitroarenes hydrogenation has been reported as a novel strategy for the preparation of aromatic amines. However, the practical application of this strategy is subjected to the high‐cost and tedious preparation of supported noble metal nanocatalysts. The commercially available CuO powder is herein demonstrated to be a robust catalyst for hydrogenation of nitroarenes using ammonia borane as a hydrogen source under mild conditions. Numerous amines (even sterically hindered, halogenated, and diamines) could be obtained through this method. This monometallic catalyst is characteristic of support‐free, excellent chemoselectivity, low‐cost, and high recyclability, which will favor its future utilization in preparative reduction chemistry. Mechanistic studies are also carried out to clarify that diazene and azoxybenzene are key intermediates of this heterogeneous reduction.

Abstract:A stable iridium catalyst bearing a chiral 2-pyridyl imidazoline ligand is described for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of quinolines and N-heteroaryl compounds. This ATH system employs formic acid as the hydrogen source and water as the solvent. Various quinolines and N-heteroaryl compounds can be efficiently converted into desired products with moderate to good enantioselectiviy at as low as 0.001 mol% of catalyst loading under mild conditions.

Abstract:An efficient visible-light-induced catalyzed dehydrogenation coupling of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones with azoles was developed, a protocol that did not require prefunctionalization of the substrates and produced hydrogen (H-2). Meanwhile, this reaction proceeded without the addition of other metal and oxidant and provided a broad range of 3-aminoquinoxalin-2(1H)-ones in medium to good yield. Furthermore, this protocol provided advantages of easy and simple operation, high chemoselectivity, and a recyclable catalyst. A preliminary mechanistic investigation revealed that the reaction involved a radical process.

Abstract:Herein, we have reported an effective protocol for the regioselective transfer hydrogenation (TH) of epoxides by utilizing a phosphine-free bis-NHC-Mn(I) complex and ammonia borane. By employing this strategy, aromatic epoxides were selectively converted to primary alcohols whereas secondary alcohols were obtained exclusively from aliphatic epoxides. The protocol was further extended for the TH of azoarenes and nitroarenes to hydrazoarenes and anilines respectively. Notably, a library of substrates with different functional groups were screened which resulted in the corresponding transfer hydrogenated product in good to excellent yields. A series of mechanistic investigations were carried out to understand the catalytic process.

Abstract:A new Rh(III)-catalyzed direct C-H alkenylation of 2,3-unsubstitued indoles with alkenyl borates through C-H activation followed by transmetallation was described. This protocol provides an efficient method for the synthesis of terminal C2-alkenylindoles under mild conditions, and also shows broad substrate scope and high functional group tolerance with respect to both components. Furthermore, the C2-alkenylated indole can be easily transformed into carboline derivative, which is an important polycyclic indole moiety in natural products and drug molecules.This article is protected by copyright.
