Abstract:We demonstrate that sum-frequency generation spectroscopy is a viable method to probe chirality of a bulk chiral liquid as well as a chiral surface monolayer. Application of the technique to binaphthol shows good agreement between theory and experiment.

Abstract:We demonstrate experimentally that visible-visible sum-frequency generation in the bulk of a chiral liquid is observable near electronic resonant transitions. Although the process is electric dipole allowed, it is rather weak because the orientational average over molecules effectively reduces the bulk chiral nonlinearity.

Abstract:We study chiral response in optical sum-frequency generation near electronic resonances from a 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BN) monolayer adsorbed on water. The polarization dependence of the spectra indicates that the molecules are well oriented at the surface with their symmetry axis along the surface normal. Orientational ordering effectively enhances the chiral response per BN molecule. The results can be quantitatively understood with a simple coupled-oscillator model for BN.

Abstract:A main purpose of this paper is to examine the origin and mechanism of nonlinear optical activity in solution. For this purpose, within the dipole-dipole formalism of SFG, we study the nonCondon effect and the effect of the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. We find that in order to determine which mechanism is responsible for this SFG it is necessary to compare the SFG band-shape functions on surfaces and in solutions.

Abstract:We review the physics and some applications of photonic structures designed for the realisation of strong $\textit{nonlinear chiroptical response}$. We pay much attention to the recent strategy of utilizing different types of $\textit{optical resonances}$ in metallic and dielectric subwavelength structures and metasurfaces, including surface plasmon resonances, Mie resonances, lattice guided modes, and bound states in the continuum. We summarize earlier results and discuss more recent developments for achieving large circular dichroism combined with the high efficiency of nonlinear harmonic generation.

Abstract:Chiral sum-frequency (SF) spectroscopy that measures both the real and the imaginary components of the SF spectral response was demonstrated for the first time. It was based on interference of the SF signal with a dispersionless SF reference. Solutions of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BN) were used as model systems, and their chiral SF spectra over the first exciton-split transitions were obtained. Chiral spectra are useful for determination of absolute configuration and conformation of chiral molecules.
Ultrafast control over chiral sum-frequency generation

Abstract:We introduce an ultrafast all-optical approach for efficient chiral recognition which relies on the interference between two low-order nonlinear processes which are ubiquitous in nonlinear optics: sum-frequency generation and third-harmonic generation. In contrast to traditional sum-frequency generation, our approach encodes the medium's handedness in the intensity of the emitted harmonic signal, rather than in its phase, and it enables full control over the enantiosensitive response. We show how, by sculpting the sub-optical-cycle oscillations of the driving laser field, we can force one molecular enantiomer to emit bright light while its mirror twin remains dark, thus reaching the ultimate efficiency limit of chiral sensitivity via low-order nonlinear light-matter interactions. Our work paves the way for ultrafast and highly efficient imaging and control of the chiral electronic clouds of chiral molecules using lasers with moderate intensities, in all states of matter: from gases to liquids to solids, with molecular specificity and on ultrafast timescales.

Abstract:Chiral nanostructures or chiral arrangements of plasmonic nanoparticles can strongly interact with circularly polarized light, giving rise to chiroptical effects such as circular dichroism and optical rotation. In parallel, enhanced optical fields around metallic nanostructures have been shown to be capable of enhancement of both linear and nonlinear optical processes. Sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy, a nonlinear process, has shown chiral transitions where s- and p-polarizations mix to generate so-called chiral SFG. Here we combine chiral plasmonic nanostructures with chiral SFG to explore chiral nonlinear optical responses. We use chiral gold hooks (chiral), which are compared to disks (achiral) in their ability to generate chiral SFG signals and enable chiral SFG transitions. The plasmonic characteristics of the nanostructures measured by SFG and calculated by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) reveal multiple polarization-dependent plasmon modes. Here we show, for the first time, that chiral gold nanoparticles can generate chiral SF electronic resonances. This optical metasurface with chiral cells and its enhancement mechanism are expected to be applied in sensing and detection to chiral macromolecules or the signal processing in optical communications.

Abstract:Nonlinear chiral photonics explores nonlinear response of chiral structures, and it offers a pathway to novel optical functionalities not accessible through linear or achiral systems. Here we present the first application of nanostructured van der Waals materials to nonlinear chiral photonics. We demonstrate the three orders of magnitude enhancement of the third-harmonic generation from hBN metasurfaces driven by quasi-bound states in the continuum and accompanied by strong nonlinear circular dichroism at the resonances. This novel platform for chiral metaphotonics can be employed for achieving large circular dichroism combined with high-efficiency harmonic generation in a broad frequency range.

Abstract:The coupled-oscillator model, previously used to describe linear optical activity, is extended to the study of nonlinear optical activity of dimer-like chiral molecules. The result shows good agreement between theory and experiment for optically active sum-frequency generation from 1,1′-bi-2-naphthol solution. It is seen that linear and nonlinear optical activities generally probe different aspects of the chiral structure of the molecules.

Abstract:We have shown that optically active second-harmonic generation is allowed in a uniaxial fluid medium. A homeotropically aligned chiral smectic-A liquid crystal was used as an example. Phase matching was achievable by angle tuning. Chiral nonlinear susceptibility for the liquid crystal was deduced. The signal dropped precipitously as the sample underwent the transition from smectic-A to isotropic.

Abstract:The recent discovery that linearly polarized light with a helical wavefront can exhibit vortex dichroism (also referred to as helical dichroism) has opened up new horizons in chiroptical spectroscopy with structured chiral light. Recent experiments have now pushed optical activity with vortex beams into the regime of nonlinear optics. Here we present the theory of two-photon absorption (TPA) of focused optical vortices by chiral molecules: nonlinear vortex dichroism (NVD). We discover that highly distinct features arise in the case of TPA with focused vortex beams, including the ability to probe chiral molecular structure not accessible to current methods and that the differential rate of TPA is significantly influenced by the orientation of the state of linear polarization. This work provides strong evidence that combining nonlinear optical activity with structured light provides new and improved routes to studying molecular chirality.

Nonlinear frequency-asymmetric optical response in chiral systems

Abstract:We report our theoretical results on the emergence of a nonlinear frequency-asymmetric optical response characteristic of chiral crystal systems with neither spatial inversion symmetry nor mirror symmetry. Based on the group theoretical analysis, we show that the chirality-related second-order nonlinear optical response occurs for two different input frequencies when the low-energy model Hamiltonian includes a time-reversal-even pseudoscalar quantity, i.e., the electric toroidal monopole. We demonstrate its emergence by investigating a fundamental microscopic model with the chiral-type antisymmetric spin--orbit interaction on a simple cubic lattice. By analyzing the behavior of nonlinear optical conductivity based on the Kubo formula, we find that the response is largely enhanced when one of the frequencies is set to zero and the other is set to a resonant frequency. We also discuss the relaxation time dependence of the response.

Abstract:A sum-frequency generation (SFG) microscope that is sensitive toward molecular chirality was demonstrated for the first time. Optically active images of chiral 1,1‘-bi-2-naphthol solutions were obtained with submicron spatial resolution. Three-dimensional sectioning capability of our microscope was also demonstrated. This optically active SFG microscopy can potentially become a powerful imaging technique for biological samples.

Abstract:Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) and infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG) as surface probes have recently attracted a great deal of attention because of their seemingly unlimited possible applications to all areas of surface science. We review here the recent progress in this field. We first discuss how surface-specific these techniques really are. This is important because the bulk contribution to the signal sets a limit to the sensitivity of such surface probes. We then give a number of examples to illustrate the power of the techniques. Most of them are chosen to show that SHG and SFG are unique in providing specific information about the particular surface or interfacial systems. The following problems will be discussed in some detail. 1. Measurements of molecular nonlinearities and the environmental effect on soluble and insoluble molecular monolayers at air/water interfaces. 2. Studies of molecular orientations of liquid surfaces. 3. Creation and detection of monolayer gratings on crystalline surfaces and measurements of anisotropic surface diffusion. Abstract:Chiral sum-frequency generation (SFG) has proven to be a versatile spectroscopic and imaging tool for probing chirality. However, due to polarization restriction, the conventional chiral SFG microscopes have mostly adopted noncollinear beam configurations, which only partially cover the aperture of microscope and strongly spoil the spatial resolution. In this study, we report the first experimental demonstration of collinear chiral SFG microscopy, which fundamentally supports diffraction-limited resolution. This advancement is attributed to the collinear focus of a radially polarized vectorial beam and a linearly polarized (LP) beam. The tightly focused vectorial beam has a very strong longitudinal component, which interacts with the LP beam and produces the chiral SFG. The collinear configuration can utilize the full aperture and thus push the spatial resolution close to the diffraction limit. This technique can potentially boost the understanding of chiral systems.
