Abstract:Here we report a novel twin polarization angle (TPA) approach in the quantitative chirality detection with the surface sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS). Generally, the achiral contribution dominates the surface SFG-VS signal, and the pure chiral signal is usually two or three orders of magnitude smaller. Therefore, it has been difficult to make quantitative detection and analysis of the chiral contributions to the surface SFG-VS signal. In the TPA method, by varying together the polarization angles of the incoming visible light and the sum frequency signal at fixed s or p polarization of the incoming infrared beam, the polarization dependent SFG signal can give not only direct signature of the chiral contribution in the total SFG-VS signal, but also the accurate measurement of the chiral and achiral components in the surface SFG signal. The general description of the TPA method is presented and the experiment test of the TPA approach is also presented for the SFG-VS from the S- and R-limonene chiral liquid surfaces. The most accurate degree of chiral excess values thus obtained for the 2878 cm(-1) spectral peak of the S- and R-limonene liquid surfaces are (23.7 +/- 0.4)% and (-25.4 +/- 1.3)%, respectively.

Abstract:Chiral nanophotonic platforms provide a means of creating near fields with both enhanced asymmetric properties and intensities. They can be exploited for optical measurements that allow enantiomeric discrimination at detection levels greater than 6 orders of magnitude than is achieved with conventional chirally sensitive spectroscopic methods based on circularly polarized light. The optimal approach for exploiting nanophotonic platforms for chiral detection would be to use spectroscopic methods that provide a local probe of changes in the near field environment induced by the presence of chiral species. Here we show that surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is such a local probe of the near field environment. We have used it to achieve enantiomeric discrimination of chiral helicoid nanoparticles deposited on left and right-handed enantiomorphs of a chiral metafilm. Hotter electromagnetic hotspots are created for matched combinations of helicoid and metafilms (left-left and right-right), while mismatched combinations leads to significantly cooler electromagnetic hotspots. This large enantiomeric dependency on hotspot intensity is readily detected using SERS with the aid of an achiral Raman reporter molecule. In effect we have used SERS to distinguish between the different EM environments of the plasmonic diastereomers produced by mixing chiral nanoparticles and metafilms. The work demonstrates that by combining chiral nanophotonic platforms with established SERS strategies new avenues in ultrasensitive chiral detection can be opened.

Abstract:A chiral object, i.e., one that is distinguishable from its mirror image, interacts differently with photons of left-hand (+) and right-hand (-) circular polarizations. The difference in the absorption part is known as circular dichroism ( CD), which is usually observed for biomolecules with one or more chiral centers and is widely used to probe their molecular stereometry. Such probing has an increasingly broad importance for biomedical and pharmacological fields due to synthesis/separation/detection of homochiral species, biological role of chiral organization, and structural response to environmental conditions and enantiomeric drugs. Recent theoretical and experimental works demonstrated that the CD signal from chiral organic molecules could appear in the plasmonic band when they are coupled with plasmonic particles. Here report an intriguing case in which non-chiral plasmonic nanoparticles are surrounded by a monolayer of DNA molecules that have chirality arising from its helix structure and individual nucleobases. We identify gold/silver core/shell nanocubes as most effective by providing a giant, 2 orders of magnitude CD enhancement in a near-visible region, while DNA's native CD signal appears at much higher energy. The discovered phenomenon opens novel opportunities in ultrasensitive probing of biomolecules and for novel optical nanomaterials based on the chiral elements.

Abstract:Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is conventionally utilized for the enantiomer-specific analysis of chiral samples, which is of great significance in academia and industry. Recently, metasurfaces have been introduced for enhancing the sensitivity of CD spectroscopy. However, the obtained CD spectrum alone cannot provide the enantiomer composition of a chiral sample. It should be normalized by the molar concentration of chiral molecules, which is usually measured on a different platform. Here, for the first time we demonstrate the integrated acquisition of CD spectrum and molar concentration over an individual metasurface with high sensitivities. High-Q resonances are supported on the metasurface, governed by bound states in the continuum. The generated superchiral field enables a 59-times enhancement of CD signal. Meanwhile, the refractive index-based detection of molar concentration achieves a large figure-of-merit of 80.6. Abstract:Two-dimensional supramolecular chemistry on surfaces is strongly governed by directional forces, and expression of chirality in two dimensions is quite pronounced due to confinement to the plane. In particular the absence of certain symmetry elements has a strong influence on pattern formation. With the appearance of scanning tunneling microscopy, two-dimensional supramolecular chirality has become a popular issue in the field of surface self-assembly during the last decade. By using recent examples from literature, a conceptual overview on different aspects of surface chirality will be given. The main topics are adsorption-induced chirality, chiral recognition, transfer of chirality from single molecules into supramolecular structures, and cooperatively driven chiral amplification phenomena.

Abstract:This study addresses the critical need for high purity chiral molecules in biological systems by overcoming the challenges associated with the quantitative detection of chiral molecules and their enantiomeric mixtures. We developed an innovative detection approach that leverages the two-dimensional information gleaned from natural optical rotation (NOR) and Faraday optical rotation (FOR) under magnetic fields in chiral molecules, combined with an ultrahigh-resolution weak measurement sensor. This novel weak measurement system achieves unparalleled accuracy in detecting spin angles, with a precision of 1.86 × 10-5°. Notably, our method introduces no chemical reactions or interference with the substances under test. It offers enhanced discrimination capabilities through the dual-dimensional analysis of both natural and Faraday optical rotation, alongside a simple and compact sensor design. Conclusively, our study introduces a novel, high-precision, and multi-dimensional optical detection paradigm for chiral molecules. By incorporating Faraday rotation in the presence of a magnetic field, we expand the informational dimensionality accessible to the original weak measurement sensor, facilitating the quantitative analysis of chiral molecules and their enantiomers. This breakthrough not only furnishes a novel instrument for the exploration and development of chiral pharmaceuticals but also propels the advancement of weak measurement sensing technology forward.
Inhomogeneous and Spontaneous Formation of Chirality in the Langmuir Monolayer of Achiral Molecules at the Air/Water Interface Probed by in Situ Surface Second Harmonic Generation Linear Dichroism

Abstract:The chirality of the Langmuir monolayer at different surface densities formed with achiral 5-octadecyloxy-2-(2-pyridylazo)phenol (PARC18) molecules at the air/water interface was measured with the in situ optical second harmonic generation linear dichroism (SHG-LD) technique. Using the s-polarization detection curve in SHG-LD, the degree of chiral excess (DCE) in the Langmuir monolayer can be determined as accurately as 2%. We found that the PARC18 Langmuir monolayer was chiral and the degree of chirality varied randomly between the two opposite chiral states in the same monolayer at different surface densities and at different locations, suggesting coexistence of the various enantiomers simultaneously in the PARC18 Langmuir monolayer. This inhomogeneity of the monolayer chirality was independent of the laser power and wavelength as well as the surface density and the surface pressure, and the chiral domains distributed randomly in the Langmuir monolayer. We also found that the chirality in the PARC18 Langmuir monolayer was spontaneously formed upon molecular aggregation, instead of being compression induced. There was no apparent magnetic dipole contribution observed throughout the different surface densities in the PARC18 Langmuir monolayer. These results indicate that the SHG-LD technique is not only an effective in situ probe of the interface chirality but also an effective tool to study the dynamic processes in the close-packed monolayer or in the self-assembled films.
Chirality without Stereoisomers: Insight from the Helical Response of Bond Electrons

Abstract:The association between molecular chirality and helical characteristics known as the chirality-helicity equivalence is determined for the first time by quantifying a chirality-helicity measure consistent with photoexcitation circular dichroism experiments. This is demonstrated using a formally achiral SN 2 reaction and a chiral SN 2 reaction. Both the achiral and chiral SN 2 reactions possess significant values of the chirality-helicity measure and display a Walden inversion, i. e. an inversion of the chirality between the reactant and product. We also track the chirality-helicity measure along the reaction path and discover the presence of chirality at the transition state and two intermediate structures for both reactions. We demonstrate the need for the chirality-helicity measure to differentiate between steric effects due to eclipsed conformations and chiral behaviors in formally achiral species. We explain the significance of this work for asymmetric synthetic reactions including the intermediate structures where the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog (CIP) rules cannot be used.
Entanglement-Assisted Quantum Chiral Spectroscopy

Abstract:The most important problem of spectroscopic chiral analysis is the inherently weak chiral signals are easily overwhelmed by the environment noises. Enormous efforts had been spent to overcome this problem by enhancing the symmetry break in the light-molecule interactions or reducing the environment noises. Here, we propose an alternative way to solve this problem by using frequency-entangled photons as probe signals and detecting them in coincidence, i.e., using quantum chiral spectroscopy. For this purpose, we develop the theory of entanglement-assisted quantum chiral spectroscopy. Our results show that the signals of left- and right-handed molecules in the quantum spectrum are always distinguishable by suitably configuring the entangled probe photons. In construct, the classical spectrum of the two enantiomers become indistinguishable when the symmetry break in the interactions is overwhelmed by the environment noises. This offers our quantum chiral spectroscopy a great advantage over all classical chiral spectroscopy. Our work opens up an exciting area that exploring profound advantages of quantum spectroscopy in chiral analysis.

Enantiodetection via the 2D spectroscopy: extending the methodology to general experimental conditions

Abstract:Developing effective methods to measure the enantiomeric excess of the chiral mixture is one of the major topics in chiral molecular researches, yet remains challenging. Enantiodetection method via two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy based on a four level model, containing a cyclic three-level system (CTLS), of chiral molecules was recently proposed and demonstrated, yet with a strict condition of the one-photon resonance (where three driving fields are exactly resonantly coupled to the three electric-dipole transitions, respectively) in the CTLS and narrowband probe pulse assumption. Here, we extend the 2D spectroscopy method to more general experimental conditions, with three-photon resonance (where the sum of the two smaller frequencies among the three driving fields equals to the third one) and broadband probe pulse. Our method remains effective on enantiodetection with the help of experimental techniques, such as the chop detection method, which is used to eliminate the influence of the other redundant levels existing in the real system of chiral molecules. Under these more general conditions, the enantiomeric excess of the chiral mixture is estimated by taking an easily available standard sample (usually the racemic mixture) as the reference.

Abstract:Chirality, defined by Lord Kelvin, refers to the geometric symmetry property of an object that cannot be superposed onto its mirror image using rotations and translations. The material’s chirality can be probed with light as the optical activity: optical rotary dispersion (ORD) and circular dichroism (CD). It is still challenging to yield extremely sensitive ORD and CD for very weak chirality and measure both simultaneously. Cavity ringdown polarimetry has been reported to improve ORD detection sensitivity with the absence of equally important CD signature, at the price of high cavity finesse near 400, frequency-locking sophistication, and large magnetic field. Here, we report a unique recipe to demonstrate the simultaneous measurement of ORD and the CD by separately observing the chiral eigenmode spectra from a bowtie optical cavity with a finesse about 30, without resorting to frequency locking or magnetic field. We obtain a sensitivity of ∼ 2.7× 10^-3deg/√(Hz) for ORD, ∼ 8.1 × 10^-6 /√(Hz) for CD, and a spectral resolution of 0.04 pm within a millisecond-scale measurement. We present a cost-effective yet ultrasensitive account for chiral chromatography, the conformational dynamics and chiroptical analysis of biological samples which particularly exhibit weak and narrow spectral signals.
Near‐Field Coupling Induced Less Chiral Responses in Chiral Metamaterials for Surface‐Enhanced Vibrational Circular Dichroism

Abstract:Near‐field coupling is introduced as a new mechanism to manipulate the circular dichroism (CD). Enhanced near‐field coupling strength prohibits the boost of structural CD, while the optical chiral field enhancement is preserved. Such a mechanism enables a surface‐enhanced vibrational circular dichroism (SEVCD) sensing platform for enantiomers, where the molecular CD signals are enhanced while not overshadowed by the chiral metamaterials. Chiral metamaterials play vital roles in manipulating the circular polarization of electromagnetic waves. Although planar chiral metamaterials are believed to have no true/intrinsic chirality, the design of structural anisotropy can still create enormous circular dichroism, while the mechanism is fully explored. Here, for the first time, it is observed that strong near‐field coupling induces less chiral response in chiral metamaterials. Selective exposure methods to manipulate the near‐field coupling strength, and experimentally validate the circular dichroism difference from tailored near‐field coupling effect are leveraged, which provides strong evidence for the assumption and can be utilized for the structural design framework. Besides, using the enhanced near‐field (over 750‐fold), surface‐enhanced vibrational circular dichroism (SEVCD) for glucose enantiomers, which shows a larger‐than‐one normalized sensitivity compared with metamaterials with chiral response is demonstrated. Furthermore, The potential of SEVCD by detecting a broadband signal using arrayed metamaterials is explored. These findings pave the way toward chiroptical nanophotonic designs for potential biomedical and healthcare applications.

Sum-Frequency Spectroscopy of Electronic Resonances on A Chiral Surface Monolayer of Bi-Naphthol

Abstract:We study chiral response in optical sum-frequency generation near electronic resonances from a 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BN) monolayer adsorbed on water. The polarization dependence of the spectra indicates that the molecules are well oriented at the surface with their symmetry axis along the surface normal. Orientational ordering effectively enhances the chiral response per BN molecule. The results can be quantitatively understood with a simple coupled-oscillator model for BN.

Abstract:Chirality is omnipresent in the living world. As biomimetic nanotechnology and self-assembly advance, they too need chirality. Accordingly, there is a pressing need to develop general methods to characterize chiral building blocks at the nanoscale in liquids such as water─the medium of life. Here, we demonstrate the chiroptical second-harmonic Tyndall scattering effect. The effect was observed in Si nanohelices, an example of a high-refractive-index dielectric nanomaterial. For three wavelengths of illumination, we observe a clear difference in the second-harmonic scattered light that depends on the chirality of the nanohelices and the handedness of circularly polarized light. Importantly, we provide a theoretical analysis that explains the origin of the effect and its direction dependence, resulting from different specific contributions of "electric dipole-magnetic dipole" and "electric dipole-electric quadrupole" coupling tensors. Using numerical simulations, we narrow down the number of such terms to 8 in forward scattering and to a single one in right-angled scattering. For chiral scatterers such as high-refractive-index dielectric nanoparticles, our findings expand the Tyndall scattering regime to nonlinear optics. Moreover, our theory can be broadened and adapted to further classes where such scattering has already been observed or is yet to be observed.

Abstract:A transmission optical rotation detection scheme based on a weak measurement was proposed for the chirality detection of enantiomers. In this transmission weak measurement system in the frequency domain, the optical activity of the chiral liquid sample was estimated with the central wavelength shift, by modifying the preselected polarization state with the optical rotation (OR). The central wavelength shift of output spectra is sensitive to the OR angle but immune to the interference of the refractive index change caused by measuring circumstances. Two isomers of chiral amino acid acquired opposite responses with this system, and a resolution of 2.17 x 10(-9) mol/ml for Proline detection could be obtained. Such a resolution is about 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of common methods, which shows a high sensitivity. This proposed weak measurement scenario suggested an approach to polarimetry and provided a way to accurately assess molecular chirality. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:Chirality (C) is a fundamental property of objects, in terms of symmetry. It is extremely important to sense and distinguish chiral molecules in the fields of biochemistry, science, and medicine. Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy, obtained from the differential absorption of left- and right- circularly polarized light (CPL) in the infrared range, is a promising technique for enantiomeric detection and separation. However, VCD signals are typically very weak for most small molecules. Dielectric metasurfaces are an emerging platform to enhance the sensitivity of VCD spectroscopy of chiral molecules via superchiral field manipulation. Here, we demonstrate a dielectric metasurface consisting of achiral germanium (Ge) tetramer nanoresonators that provide a proper and accessible high C enhancement (CE). We realize a maximum C enhancement (CE_max) with respect to the incident CPL (CE_max = Cmax/CRCP) of more than 750. The volume-averaged C enhancement (CE_ave = Cave/CRCP) is 148 in the 50 nm thick region above the sample surface and 215 in the central region of the structure. Especially, the corresponding CE_ave values are more than 89 and 183 even when a 50 nm thick chiral lossy molecular layer is coated on the metasurface. The metasurface benefits from geometrically achiral nanostructure design to eliminate intrinsic background chiral-optical signal from the substrate, which is useful in chiral sensing, enantioselectivity, and VCD spectroscopy applications in the mid-infrared range.
Surface Enhanced Circular Dichroism of Oriented Chiral Molecules by Plasmonic Nanostructures

Abstract:We present a rigorous finite element method to calculate circular dichroism (CD) in various systems consisting of nanostructures and oriented chiral molecules with electric quadrupole transitions. The interaction between oriented molecule materials, which are regarded as anisotropic chiral media, and metallic nanostructures has been investigated. Our results show that the plasmon-induced CD is sensitive to the orientations of the molecules. In many cases, the contribution of molecular electric quadrupole transitions to the total CD signal can play a key role. More interesting, we have demonstrated that both the quadrupole- and dipole-based CD signals can be improved greatly by matching the phases for the electromagnetic fields and their gradients at different regions around the nanostructures, which are occupied by the oriented chiral molecules. Different regions might produce CD of opposite sign. When integrating over regions with only one side of the proposed nanostructure, we find that the CD-peak may be nearly hundreds-fold over the case of integrating both sides. We believe that these findings would be helpful for realizing ultrasensitive probing of chiral information for oriented molecules by plasmon-based nanotechnology.
