Abstract:Infrared-visible doubly resonant sum-frequency spectroscopy has been successfully used to obtain optically active vibrational spectra of a chiral molecular monolayer. This establishes the technique as a unique tool for in situ probing of vibrational chirality.

Abstract:The strength of the chiral vibrational peaks in infrared-visible sum-frequency (SF) vibrational spectra from isotropic chiral liquids is proportional to the square of the corresponding antisymmetric Raman element. Under the Born-Oppenheimer adiabatic approximation with nonadiabatic corrections, the antisymmetric Raman tensor is much weaker than the symmetric counterpart, but becomes significantly stronger as the input frequency (or the sum-frequency in SF generation) approaches electronic resonance. We verify the theory with experimental results obtained from infrared-visible doubly resonant sum-frequency generation from an isotropic solution of chiral molecules.

Abstract:Chiral sum-frequency (SF) spectroscopy that measures both the real and the imaginary components of the SF spectral response was demonstrated for the first time. It was based on interference of the SF signal with a dispersionless SF reference. Solutions of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BN) were used as model systems, and their chiral SF spectra over the first exciton-split transitions were obtained. Chiral spectra are useful for determination of absolute configuration and conformation of chiral molecules.

Abstract:Sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy was used as a novel technique to probe the molecular chirality of thin polymer films. Chiral vibrational spectra of poly(bithienylene-phenylene) were obtained, and the two enantiomers were distinguished by an interference method. Vibration-electronic double resonance was responsible for the observation of unusually strong chiral spectra of the phenylene vibration modes.

Abstract:We demonstrate experimentally that visible-visible sum-frequency generation in the bulk of a chiral liquid is observable near electronic resonant transitions. Although the process is electric dipole allowed, it is rather weak because the orientational average over molecules effectively reduces the bulk chiral nonlinearity.

Abstract:Over the last decade, infrared-visible sum-frequency generation has been developed into a powerful vibrational spectroscopic technique, especially for surface studies. We give here a brief review of the technique and a few recent applications of the technique to liquid and polymer surfaces. We also describe how the technique has found unique applications in our studies of surface melting of ice, ferroelectric ice films, and molecular chirality in chiral liquids. Doubly resonant sum-frequency generation as surface-specific two-dimensional spectroscopy is discussed.

Abstract:Second-order nonlinear spectroscopy is a powerful tool in exploring significant physical and chemical characteristics at various interfaces and on chiral systems. We present a method of computing the nonadiabatic couplings between the different excited electronic states with time-dependent density functional theory and then study doubly resonant sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) of chiral solutions due to the nonadiabatic, Franck-Condon, and Herzberg-Teller (HT) effects. The calculations for R-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol show that the theoretical spectra agree with experiment, and the nonadiabatic corrections are comparable with the HT terms or even larger for some vibrational modes, which is different from the mechanism of SFVS off electronic resonance. Doubly resonant SFVS may be a useful method of studying the nonradiative transition and nonadiabatic effect between the excited electronic states.

Abstract:Sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) has been used to probe the chirality of a polymer thin film. The polymer used has a pi-electron conjugated structure in the main chain, and a chiral center in the side chains that is close to the main chain, giving rise to the helically twisted main chain. The vibrational modes probed are stretches associated with the main chain. As expected for chiral responses, we find that the chiral SFVS spectra are identical for the two enantiomers, and the signal vanishes for the racemic polymer. We also confirm experimentally that the chiral nonlinear susceptibilities for SFVS for the two enantiomers have opposite signs.

Abstract:We demonstrate that sum-frequency generation spectroscopy is a viable method to probe chirality of a bulk chiral liquid as well as a chiral surface monolayer. Application of the technique to binaphthol shows good agreement between theory and experiment.

Abstract:A sum-frequency generation (SFG) microscope that is sensitive toward molecular chirality was demonstrated for the first time. Optically active images of chiral 1,1‘-bi-2-naphthol solutions were obtained with submicron spatial resolution. Three-dimensional sectioning capability of our microscope was also demonstrated. This optically active SFG microscopy can potentially become a powerful imaging technique for biological samples.

Abstract:We study chiral response in optical sum-frequency generation near electronic resonances from a 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BN) monolayer adsorbed on water. The polarization dependence of the spectra indicates that the molecules are well oriented at the surface with their symmetry axis along the surface normal. Orientational ordering effectively enhances the chiral response per BN molecule. The results can be quantitatively understood with a simple coupled-oscillator model for BN.

Abstract:Here we report a novel twin polarization angle (TPA) approach in the quantitative chirality detection with the surface sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS). Generally, the achiral contribution dominates the surface SFG-VS signal, and the pure chiral signal is usually two or three orders of magnitude smaller. Therefore, it has been difficult to make quantitative detection and analysis of the chiral contributions to the surface SFG-VS signal. In the TPA method, by varying together the polarization angles of the incoming visible light and the sum frequency signal at fixed s or p polarization of the incoming infrared beam, the polarization dependent SFG signal can give not only direct signature of the chiral contribution in the total SFG-VS signal, but also the accurate measurement of the chiral and achiral components in the surface SFG signal. The general description of the TPA method is presented and the experiment test of the TPA approach is also presented for the SFG-VS from the S- and R-limonene chiral liquid surfaces. The most accurate degree of chiral excess values thus obtained for the 2878 cm(-1) spectral peak of the S- and R-limonene liquid surfaces are (23.7 +/- 0.4)% and (-25.4 +/- 1.3)%, respectively.

Abstract:Theoretical expressions for sum-frequency generation (SFG) signals, which can be applied to treat various SFG experiments, have been derived. We have applied the theoretical results to study the SFG experiments for the near-electronic resonant, singly resonant IR-UV, and doubly resonant IR-UV cases that are associated with the measurements reported by Shen's group. We have taken into account both the electric and magnetic dipole interactions and the applied laser and detection polarization combinations explicitly. Relationships between the polarization combinations and the electric-dipole-electric-dipole mechanism, the electric-dipole-magnetic-dipole mechanism, the magnetic-dipole-electric-dipole mechanism, and the magnetic-dipole-magnetic-dipole mechanisms are clarified. Based on the theoretical results, near-electronic resonant SFG, singly resonant IR-UV SFG, doubly resonant IR SFG experiments are discussed.

Abstract:In this study, we apply the monitoring master equation describing decoherence of internal states to an optically active molecule prepared in a coherent superposition of nondegenerate internal states interacting with thermal photons at low temperatures. We use vibrational Raman scattering theory up to the first chiral-sensitive contribution, i.e., the mixed electric-magnetic interaction, to obtain scattering amplitudes in terms of molecular polarizability tensors. The resulting density matrix is used to obtain elastic decoherence rates.

A Molecular Theory for Doubly Resonant IR−UV-vis Sum-Frequency Generation

Abstract:The experiment for measuring doubly resonant infrared-visible (IR-vis) sum-frequency generation (SFG) has recently been developed by Shen and his co-worker and applied to Rhodamine 6G on silica surfaces. In this paper, based on the Born-Oppenheimer adiabatic approximation, a molecular theory for doubly resonant IR-vis SFG generation as a two-dimensional surface spectroscopy is presented. We shall show that this new nonlinear spectroscopy is closely related to IR and resonance Raman spectroscopy. In this preliminary theoretical derivation, the displaced harmonic potential energy surfaces model for the electronic ground and electronically excited states of the system are used to obtain the band shape functions for doubly resonant IR-vis SFG at a finite temperature. One of the unique and powerful abilities of this spectroscopy is that interference effects among IR-active modes can be observed. The calculated excitation profiles and IR spectra of the doubly resonant IR-UV SFG from Rhodamine 6G on fused silica are demonstrated. We shall show that this new nonlinear spectroscopy can provide experimentalists with access to microscopic properties of molecules on surfaces or at interfaces.

Abstract:The ability to achieve sub-wavenumber resolution (0.6 cm(-1)) and a large signal-to-noise ratio in high-resolution broadband sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (HR-BB-SFG-VS) allows for the detailed SFG spectral lineshapes to be used in the unambiguous determination of fine spectral features. Changes in the structural spectroscopic phase in SFG-VS as a function of beam polarization and experimental geometry proved to be instrumental in the identification of an unexpected 2.78 +/- 0.07 cm(-1) spectral splitting for the two methyl groups at the vapor/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, (CH3)(2)SO) liquid interface as well as in the determination of their orientational angles. Abstract:Significance Sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) has been developed into a viable surface analytical tool for media with inversion symmetry. It is considered surface specific because the bulk contribution to the signal vanishes under the electric-dipole approximation. However, there is always the worry that beyond the electric-dipole approximation, the bulk contribution may not be negligible. The problem is particularly acute if the medium under investigation does not have a strongly polar-oriented surface layer. We show here that for nonpolar media with well-separated infrared and Raman modes, it is possible to deduce bulk and surface spectra separately from combined transmission and reflection phase-sensitive SFVS measurements. The work also provides guidelines for evaluation of the importance of bulk contribution to SFVS in general.
