Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures have demonstrated a remarkable ability to control light in ways never observed in nature, as the optical response is closely linked to their flexible geometric design. Due to lack of mirror symmetry, chiral nanostructures allow twisted electric field hotspots to form at the material surface. These hotspots depend strongly on the optical wavelength and nanostructure geometry. Understanding the properties of these chiral hotspots is crucial for their applications; for instance, in enhancing the optical interactions with chiral molecules. Here, the results of an elegant experiment are presented: by designing 35 intermediate geometries, the structure is enantiomorphed from one handedness to the other, passing through an achiral geometry. Nonlinear multiphoton microscopy is used to demonstrate a new kind of double-bisignate circular dichroism due to enantiomorphing, rather than wavelength change. From group theory, a fundamental origin of this plasmonic chiroptical response is proposed. The analysis allows the optimization of plasmonic chiroptical materials.
Chiral optical response of planar and symmetric nanotrimers enabled by heteromaterial selection

Abstract:Chirality is an intriguing property of certain molecules, materials or artificial nanostructures, which allows them to interact with the spin angular momentum of the impinging light field. Due to their chiral geometry, they can distinguish between left- and right-hand circular polarization states or convert them into each other. Here, we introduce a novel approach towards optical chirality, which is observed in individual two-dimensional and geometrically mirror-symmetric nanostructures. In this scheme, the chiral optical response is induced by the chosen heterogeneous material composition of a particle assembly and the corresponding resonance behavior of the constituents it is built from, which breaks the symmetry of the system. As a proof of principle, we investigate such a structure composed of individual silicon and gold nanoparticles both experimentally as well as numerically. Our proposed concept constitutes a novel approach for designing two-dimensional chiral media tailored at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Owing to recent advances in theory and nanofabrication, chirality parameters enabled spectacular optical properties – negative refractive index, superchiral light – in chiral nano/metamaterials. Nanofabrication allows physical tuning of the chirality parameters. In article number 1800153, Xuezhi Zheng, Ventsislav K. Valev and co-workers illustrate this concept for the first time, morphing the dimensions of one chiral form into another (“enantiomorphing”), via achiral states. Abstract:Chiral plasmonic nanostructures can generate large superchiral near fields owing to their intrinsic chirality, leveraging applications for molecule chirality sensing. However, the large structural chirality of chiral nanostructures poses the risk of overshadowing molecular chiral signals, hampering the practical application of chiral nanostructures. Herein, we propose an achiral nanorod that shows no structural chirality and presents strong superchiral near-fields with linearly polarized incidence. The mechanism of the strong superchiral near-field originates from the coupling between the evanescent fields of the localized surface plasmon resonance and incident light. The enhanced near-field optical chirality at the corners of the nanorods reached 25 at a wavelength of 790 nm. Meanwhile, the sign of optical chirality can be tuned by the polarization of the incident light, which provides a convenient way to control the handedness of the light. Furthermore, the enantiomers of D- and L-phenylalanine molecules were experimentally characterized using an achiral platform, which demonstrated a promising nanophotonic platform for chiral biomedical sensing.

Abstract:We review the physics and some applications of photonic structures designed for the realisation of strong $\textit{nonlinear chiroptical response}$. We pay much attention to the recent strategy of utilizing different types of $\textit{optical resonances}$ in metallic and dielectric subwavelength structures and metasurfaces, including surface plasmon resonances, Mie resonances, lattice guided modes, and bound states in the continuum. We summarize earlier results and discuss more recent developments for achieving large circular dichroism combined with the high efficiency of nonlinear harmonic generation.

Abstract:Chirality conferral is fundamental for understanding the origin of life, and it is of direct importance for synthesizing new pharmaceuticals in the face of growing antibiotic resistance. Human-made, self-assembling nanostructures replicate the biological chirality conferral processes utilizing covalent and non-covalent bonds. However, chirality conferral from one form of matter to another via electromagnetic fields is more subtle and less explored. Here we report chirality conferral between gold nanohelices and achiral molecules (crystal violet). This conferral enables the experimental observation of a physical effect predicted in 1979-hyper-Raman optical activity. To benefit from Fermi's golden rule, the chirality conferral system was designed as doubly resonant, with the nanohelices and molecules resonating at the fundamental frequency and at the second-harmonic, respectively. We provide a theoretical framework for our results that expands the original mathematical formalism to include surface-enhanced hyper-Raman scattering and the chirality conferral process. Our results demonstrate that field-driven chirality conferral mechanisms are opening up entire fields of research, as exemplified by the discovery of a physical phenomenon. Theoretically predicted in 1979, hyper-Raman optical activity is now experimentally observed through chirality conferral from the electromagnetic field of chiral plasmonic gold nanohelices to crystal violet molecules that are achiral, sparking new science at the organic-inorganic interface.

Abstract:We demonstrate that sum-frequency generation spectroscopy is a viable method to probe chirality of a bulk chiral liquid as well as a chiral surface monolayer. Application of the technique to binaphthol shows good agreement between theory and experiment.

Abstract:We introduce and theoretically analyze the concept of manipulating optical chirality via strong coupling of the optical modes of chiral nanostructures with excitonic transitions in molecular layers or semiconductors. With chirality being omnipresent in chemistry and biomedicine, and highly desirable for technological applications related to efficient light manipulation, the design of nanophotonic architectures that sense the handedness of molecules or generate the desired light polarization in an externally controllable manner is of major interdisciplinary importance. Here we propose that such capabilities can be provided by the mode splitting resulting from polaritonic hybridization. Starting with an object with well-known chiroptical response -- here, for a proof of concept, a chiral sphere -- we show that strong coupling with a nearby excitonic material generates two distinct frequency regions that retain the object's chirality density and handedness, which manifest most clearly through anticrossings in circular-dichroism or differential-scattering dispersion diagrams. These windows can be controlled by the intrinsic properties of the excitonic layer and the strength of the interaction, enabling thus the post-fabrication manipulation of optical chirality. Our findings are further verified via simulations of the circular dichroism of a realistic chiral architecture, namely a helical assembly of plasmonic nanospheres embedded in a resonant matrix.

Nanophotonic chiral sensing: How does it actually work?

Abstract:Nanophotonic chiral sensing has recently attracted a lot of attention. The idea is to exploit the strong light-matter interaction in nanophotonic resonators to determine the concentration of chiral molecules at ultra-low thresholds, which is highly attractive for numerous applications in life science and chemistry. However, a thorough understanding of the underlying interactions is still missing. The theoretical description relies on either simple approximations or on purely numerical approaches. We close this gap and present a general theory of chiral light-matter interactions in arbitrary resonators. Our theory describes the chiral interaction as a perturbation of the resonator modes, also known as resonant states or quasi-normal modes. We observe two dominant contributions: A chirality-induced resonance shift and changes in the modes excitation and emission efficiencies. Our theory brings new and deep insights for tailoring and enhancing chiral light-matter interactions. Furthermore, it allows to predict spectra much more efficiently in comparison to conventional approaches. This is particularly true as chiral interactions are inherently weak and therefore perturbation theory fits extremely well for this problem.

Nonlinear frequency-asymmetric optical response in chiral systems

Abstract:We report our theoretical results on the emergence of a nonlinear frequency-asymmetric optical response characteristic of chiral crystal systems with neither spatial inversion symmetry nor mirror symmetry. Based on the group theoretical analysis, we show that the chirality-related second-order nonlinear optical response occurs for two different input frequencies when the low-energy model Hamiltonian includes a time-reversal-even pseudoscalar quantity, i.e., the electric toroidal monopole. We demonstrate its emergence by investigating a fundamental microscopic model with the chiral-type antisymmetric spin--orbit interaction on a simple cubic lattice. By analyzing the behavior of nonlinear optical conductivity based on the Kubo formula, we find that the response is largely enhanced when one of the frequencies is set to zero and the other is set to a resonant frequency. We also discuss the relaxation time dependence of the response.

Abstract:Molecular chirality transfer and amplification is at the heart of the fundamental understanding of chiral origin and fabrication of artificial chiral materials. We investigate here the nonlinear amplification effect in the chiral transfer from small molecules to assembled plasmonic nanoparticles. Our results show clearly a recognizable nonlinear behavior of the electronic and plasmonic circular dichroism activities, demonstrating the validity of the "majority-rules" principle operating in both the three-dimensional interface-confined molecularly chiral environment and the assembled plasmonic nanoparticles. Such twin "majority-rules" effects from the self-assembled organic–inorganic nanocomposite system have not been reported previously. Nonlinear chiral metasurfaces based on structured van der Waals materials

Abstract:Nonlinear chiral photonics explores nonlinear response of chiral structures, and it offers a pathway to novel optical functionalities not accessible through linear or achiral systems. Here we present the first application of nanostructured van der Waals materials to nonlinear chiral photonics. We demonstrate the three orders of magnitude enhancement of the third-harmonic generation from hBN metasurfaces driven by quasi-bound states in the continuum and accompanied by strong nonlinear circular dichroism at the resonances. This novel platform for chiral metaphotonics can be employed for achieving large circular dichroism combined with high-efficiency harmonic generation in a broad frequency range.

Abstract:The non-linear generalization of the Hall effect has recently gained much attention, with a rapidly growing list of non-centrosymmetric materials that display higher-order Hall responses under time-reversal invariant conditions. The intrinsic second-order Hall response arises due to the first-order moment of Berry curvature -- termed Berry curvature dipole -- which requires broken inversion and low crystal symmetries. Chiral materials are characterized by their lack of improper symmetries such as inversion, mirror plane, and roto-inversion. Owing to this absence of symmetries, in this work, we propose chiral systems as ideal platforms to study the Berry curvature dipole-induced non-linear Hall effects. We use state-of-the-art first-principles computations, in conjunction with symmetry analyses, to explore a variety of chiral material classes -- metallic \ch{NbSi2}, semiconducting elemental Te, insulating HgS, and topological multifold semimetal CoSi. We present the emergence and tunability of the Berry curvature dipole in these chiral materials. In particular, we demonstrate that the two enantiomeric pairs exhibit an exactly opposite sign of the Berry curvature dipole. We complement our \textit{ab initio} findings with a general tight-binding minimal model and give estimates for non-linear Hall voltages, which are experimentally accessible. Our predictions put forward chiral materials as an emerging class of materials to realize non-linear Hall phenomena and highlight an as-yet-unexplored aspect of these systems.

Multidiscipline Modeling in Materials and Structures

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a novel chiral photonic crystal with thin thickness and small unit cells via numerical calculations. The multi-band circular dichroism is found in a wide frequency range from 400 to 600 THz by studying the transmission properties. Design/methodology/approach To investigate this chiral photonic structure, refection coefficients are analytically computed using finite element method. Numerical results are given, and physical properties are discussed, including the optical rotation, the circular dichroism and the absorption. Findings The results of this modeling and simulation under COMSOL multiphysics environment have led the authors to study the scattered parameters such as the coefficient of transmission (S21) and the coefficient of reflection (S11) for a 2D CPC nanostructure. The authors have also developed script under the Matlab environment which studies absorption and circular dichroism and ensure the existence of optical activity. According to the obtained results, the coefficient of transmission is proportional to the parameter of chirality. Originality/value The authors have designed a novel chiral photonic structure that exhibits larger circular dichroism. The CD spectrum has typically both positive and negative bands. The design principles defined in this work, which combine the concepts of the photonic crystal with the chiral structure (optical activity, circular dichroism and absorption), represent a model for simulation of the properties of a more complex chiral photonic structure. These results led to realization of novel circularly polarized devices in nanotechnologies.
Multiwalled boron nitride nanotubes with a strong nonlinear chiroptical response

Abstract:Chiral crystals are sought after for their ability to tune the polarization of light. Now, multiwalled boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are shown to be promising chiral crystals with coherently stacked structures, wherein the component tubes display mono-chirality, homo-handedness and unipolarity. This unique architecture endows BNNTs with strong optical nonlinearity and a chiral geometry-dependent chiroptical response.

Probing molecular chirality by coherent optical absorption spectra

Abstract:We propose an approach to sensitively probe the chirality of molecules by measuring their coherent optical absorption spectra. It is shown that quantum dynamics of the cyclic three-level chiral molecules driven by appropriately-designed external fields is total-phase dependent. This will result in chirality-dependent absorption spectra for the probe field. As a consequence, these absorption spectra can be utilized to identify molecular chirality and determinate enantiomer excess. The feasibility of the proposal with chiral molecules confined in hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) is also discussed.

Abstract:We present here the synthesis of one enantiomeric pair of metal-organic framework materials comprised of a unique multioriented double-helix structure from an achiral spirocenter ligand. Our study clearly shows that the chiral MOF material encompasses concurrently multiple nonlinear-optical functions in the solid state: the noncentrosymmetric structural feature brings the chiral MOF high second-harmonic-generation efficiency; the incorporation of the spirocenter ligand can efficiently produce two-photon-excited photoluminescence with a larger-action cross-sectional value.

Abstract:The investigation centers on an innovative approach that provides enantioselective control of crystal chirality through the application of plasmonic trapping‐induced chiral crystallization. By harnessing the nanoscale optical force, the precious control over the chirality of obtained crystals is achieved. The intriguing interplay between the handedness of molecular conformation and the helical optical force on nanotrimer is thoroughly examined through numerical simulations and experimental findings. The deterministic control of material chirality has been a sought‐after goal. As light possesses intrinsic chirality, light‐matter interactions offer promising avenues for achieving non‐contact, enantioselective optical induction, assembly, or sorting of chiral entities. However, experimental validations are confined to the microscale due to the limited strength of asymmetrical interactions within sub‐diffraction limit ranges. In this study, a novel approach is presented to facilitate chirality modulation through chiral crystallization using a helical optical force field originating from localized nanogap surface plasmon resonance. The force field emerges near a gold trimer nanogap and is propelled by linear and angular momentum transfer from the incident light to the resonant nanogap plasmon. By employing Gaussian and Laguerre–Gaussian incident laser beams, notable enantioselectivity is achieved through low‐power plasmon‐induced chiral crystallization of an organic compound–ethylenediamine sulfate. The findings provide new insights into chirality transmission orchestrated by the exchange of linear and angular momentum between light and nanomaterials.
