Abstract:This article provides an overview of a network-based model of power consumption in Internet infrastructure. This model provides insight into how different parts of the Internet will contribute to network power as Internet access increase over time. The model shows that today the access network dominates the Internet's power consumption and, as access speeds grow, the core network routers will dominate power consumption. The power consumption of data centers and content distribution networks is dominated by the power consumption of data storage for material that is infrequently downloaded and by the transport of the data for material that is frequently downloaded. Based on the model several strategies to improve the energy efficiency of the Internet are presented.

Abstract:Energy consumption is becoming an increasingly important issue throughout the community. For network operators in particular it is a concern as networks expand to deliver increasing traffic levels to increasing numbers of customers. The majority of the energy used by the Internet today is consumed in the access network, and this will continue to be the case for the short-to-mid-term future. Access technologies should thus be a prime focus for energy use mitigation. In this article, we present a detailed analysis of energy consumption in current and future access networks. We present the energy consumption of DSL, HFC networks, passive optical networks, fiber to the node, point-to-point optical systems, UMTS (W-CDMA), and WiMAX. Optical access networks are the most energy efficient of the available access technologies.

Abstract:The assessment of energy consumption of data traffic for Internet services usually relies on energy intensity figures (in Wh/GB). In this paper, we argue against using these indicators for evaluating the evolution of energy consumption of data transmission induced by changes in Internet usage. We describe a model that estimates global impacts for different scenarios of Internet usages and technological hypothesises, and show that it can overcome some limitations of intensity indicators. We experiment the model on four use‐cases: basic usage, video streaming, large downloads, and video conferencing. Results show that increasing the resolution of videos does increase the total energy consumption while misleadingly decreasing the power intensity indicator at the same time. In other words, a more efficient network does not necessarily mean less energy consumption.

Abstract:A network-based model of the carbon footprint of the Internet is presented and used to determine the carbon abatement provided by Internet-based telecommuting and teleconferencing services to replace car and air travel. The model includes DSL, FTTN and PON access technologies, edge and core network architectures and is based upon currently commercially available equipment. We show that carbon emissions of the Internet need to be taken into consideration in order to obtain an accurate estimate of carbon abatement provided by the Internet. Abstract:Along with the expansion of Internet users and the innovation of Internet applications,the scale of the Internet increases rapidly.High performance and reliability requirements of the Internet will bring in the huge power consumption and inefficient energy usage,which increases operation costs of the Internet and restricts its scale.Moreover,the rapidly increasing carbon footprint of the Internet will aggravate global warming.Researchers have proposed many energy-saving technologies in the Internet.This paper first presents the significance,feasibility and research scope of energy conservation in the Internet;We then focus on studying the energy-saving technologies for routing devices and protocols in the Internet,and survey,analyze and compare some of typical schemes in details;Meanwhile,we propose the power consumption model of routing devices and leverage the tradeoff analysis to guide the research of energy-saving routing devices and protocols in the Internet;Finally,some open issues and future directions in this area are discussed.

Abstract:Data centers are critical, energy-hungry infrastructures that run large-scale Internet-based services. Energy consumption models are pivotal in designing and optimizing energy-efficient operations to curb excessive energy consumption in data centers. In this paper, we survey the state-of-the-art techniques used for energy consumption modeling and prediction for data centers and their components. We conduct an in-depth study of the existing literature on data center power modeling, covering more than 200 models. We organize these models in a hierarchical structure with two main branches focusing on hardware-centric and software-centric power models. Under hardware-centric approaches we start from the digital circuit level and move on to describe higher-level energy consumption models at the hardware component level, server level, data center level, and finally systems of systems level. Under the software-centric approaches we investigate power models developed for operating systems, virtual machines and software applications. This systematic approach allows us to identify multiple issues prevalent in power modeling of different levels of data center systems, including: i) few modeling efforts targeted at power consumption of the entire data center ii) many state-of-the-art power models are based on a few CPU or server metrics, and iii) the effectiveness and accuracy of these power models remain open questions. Based on these observations, we conclude the survey by describing key challenges for future research on constructing effective and accurate data center power models.

Abstract:Energy Internet has caught an attention of the global academic community, and it is being implemented actively. This paper describes the basic features and the key structure of Energy Internet, proposes a hierarchical model, and presents key technologies, such as distributed energy storage technology, energy router technology, big data technology and blockchain, etc. It also summarizes the evolving status of Energy Internet in the US, Germany, Japan, and China. Based on the analysis, the viable implementing measurements are suggested for accelerating the realization of Energy Internet, i.e. designing a comprehensive plan for the Energy Internet based on the prevailing conditions and facts of each country, formulating related standards and policies for Energy Internet, encouraging the development of related enterprises and demonstration projects, and promoting new technologies for Energy Internet.

Abstract:Network-based cloud computing is rapidly expanding as an alternative to conventional office-based computing. As cloud computing becomes more widespread, the energy consumption of the network and computing resources that underpin the cloud will grow. This is happening at a time when there is increasing attention being paid to the need to manage energy consumption across the entire information and communications technology (ICT) sector. While data center energy use has received much attention recently, there has been less attention paid to the energy consumption of the transmission and switching networks that are key to connecting users to the cloud. In this paper, we present an analysis of energy consumption in cloud computing. The analysis considers both public and private clouds, and includes energy consumption in switching and transmission as well as data processing and data storage. We show that energy consumption in transport and switching can be a significant percentage of total energy consumption in cloud computing. Cloud computing can enable more energy-efficient use of computing power, especially when the computing tasks are of low intensity or infrequent. However, under some circumstances cloud computing can consume more energy than conventional computing where each user performs all computing on their own personal computer (PC).

Abstract:It is commonly assumed that data volume and network energy consumption are directly proportional, a notion perpetuated by numerous studies and media coverage. This paper challenges this assumption, offering a comprehensive examination of network operations to explain why the relationship between energy consumption and data volume is nonlinear. The power model approach is explored as an alternative methodology for calculating network energy consumption providing a more reliable representation of network energy use. The power model demonstrates that simple energy intensity calculations, expressed as kilowatt hours per gigabyte of data, are insufficient for accurately estimating real‐world network energy consumption.

Abstract:The widespread proliferation of Internet and wireless applications has produced a significant increase of ICT energy footprint. As a response, in the last five years, significant efforts have been undertaken to include energy-awareness into network management. Several green networking frameworks have been proposed by carefully managing the network routing and the power state of network devices. Even though approaches proposed differ based on network technologies and sleep modes of nodes and interfaces, they all aim at tailoring the active network resources to the varying traffic needs in order to minimize energy consumption. From a modeling point of view, this has several commonalities with classical network design and routing problems, even if with different objectives and in a dynamic context. With most researchers focused on addressing the complex and crucial technological aspects of green networking schemes, there has been so far little attention on understanding the modeling similarities and differences of proposed solutions. This paper fills the gap surveying the literature with optimization modeling glasses, following a tutorial approach that guides through the different components of the models with a unified symbolism. A detailed classification of the previous work based on the modeling issues included is also proposed.

Abstract:We present a study on minimizing non-renewable energy for the Internet. The classification of renewable and non-renewable energy brings in several challenges. First, it is necessary to understand how the routing system can distinguish the two types of energy in the power supply. Second, the routing problem changes due to renewable energy; and so do the algorithm designs and analysis. We first clarify the model of how routers can distinguish renewable and non-renewable energy supporting their power supply. This cannot be determined by the routing system alone, and involves modeling the energy generation and supply of the grid. We then present the router power consumption model, which has a fixed startup power and a dynamic traffic-dependent power. We formulate a minimum non-renewable energy routing problem, and two special cases representing either the startup power dominates or the traffic-dependent power dominates. We analyze the complexity of these problems, develop optimal and sub-optimal algorithms, and jointly consider QoS requirements such as path stretch. We evaluate our algorithms using real data from both National and European centers. As compared to the algorithms minimizing the total energy, our algorithms can reduce the non-renewable energy consumption for more than 20% under realistic assumptions.

Abstract:The vision of Energy Internet was originally proposed by Professor Alex Q.Huang (North Carolina State University,United States) in 2007 and was inspired by the paradigm shift of computer industry in early 1980s.The centralized computer mainframes gave way to a distributed computing infrastructure which allows individual users to access via a worldwide internet.From its inception,the information Internet (computer network) innovations have been completely reshaping the traditional views of our social environment and business world.In a similar paradigm shift,highly distributed and scalable renewable energy resources must play a primary role,of which the centralized bulk power plants are currently serving.This paradigm shift can only be achieved by encouraging and facilitating the participation of individual residential customer with a future power distribution infrastructure.While legacy power system operations are solely driven by least-cost and reliability concerns,the Energy Internet innovations are completely reshaping the traditional views of our power generation,distribution,consumption,social environment,and business world.The vision of Energy Internet will require the equivalent of a Manhattan Project for energy,as suggested in Thomas Friedman's book,The World is Flat.It is believed that Energy Internet is a level playing field in terms of electricity transactions,where all residential customers have an equal opportunity.The residential energy customers,referred as Energy Cells,will radically change the traditional view of electricity market.The envisioned Energy Intemet requires that our society move away from,or at least supplement,the traditional centralized generation,distribution,and consumption business model to one where every user can actively participate in the energy market.User participation is a major factor that has resulted in exponentially increasing innovation and ingenuity in the information technology sector (e.g.,Amazon,eBay and Facebook).If the "Information Intemet" was the engine that powered our country's economic growth in the last thirty years,then a similar and even more powerful Energy Internet will accomplish even more in the next several decades.The Energy Internet builds upon advanced power electronics,power system control,two-way communication,and two-way power flow.The Energy Internet will bring both opportunities and challenges to our research and education society.This paper will present the role of Energy Internet in United States as a means of allowing new market participants to fully engage in a dynamic and diverse energy market through a distributed decision making process in which electricity rates are determined via competitive and intelligent purchasing and selling strategies.

Abstract:Energy internet, the results of integration of the energy system and the internet, is the focus and innovation cutting edge of the contemporary international academic and industrial area. It will have disruptive effects on the traditional energy system and the energy industry. The driving force for the raise and development of energy internet is analyzed from environmental, economic, social, technical and policy aspects. This paper surveys the domestic and international development of energy internet, and reviews a variety of energy internet concepts. These concepts emphasize global electric energy interconnection, or multi-energy coupling or energy information integration respectively, and have a gap from the ideal energy internet. This paper regards energy internet as the results of integration of the energy system and the internet, inclusive existing concepts but with more profound contents. The key idea of energy internet is openness and the key feature is the deep integration of the internet ideas and technologies. The basic architecture includes“internet-like energy system” and“internet+”. Several basic science problems of energy internet in the system level are proposed. The development of energy internet will effectively promote the energy market, efficiency and greenization, and make the large traditional energy industry a fertile ground for people’s innovation and entrepreneurship.

Abstract:Energy consumption of networking infrastructures is growing fast due to the exponential growth of data traffic and the deployment of increasingly powerful equipment. Besides operational costs and environmental impacts, the ever-increasing energy consumption has become a limiting factor to long-term growth of network infrastructures. Operators, vendors and researchers have started to look beyond a single router or line card for network-wide solutions towards energy proportionality. Therefore, Power Aware Networking (PANET) has been proposed to improve network energy efficiency. A PANET-enabled network assumes that only a subset of devices will be involved in traffic forwarding when the network is lightly loaded, so as to improve global energy savings. PANET is introduced in this chapter. Promising solutions for PANET are also exposed. PANET features are also analyzed. The chapter also discusses the challenges and future work that needs to be done.
