Abstract:Significance The exponential growth of data driven by big data and artificial intelligence is propelling data centers towards larger scales. The adoption of decoupled architectures has increased the number of interconnection nodes and data exchanges within these centers, particularly in new data centers tailored for artificial intelligence where distributed training requires a considerable data exchange between GPU nodes. Minimizing communication-to-computation ratio is crucial for efficient distributed machine learning frameworks. Despite using low-power, high-bandwidth optical interconnections for node-to-node data transfer, signal switching in data centers still relies heavily on a hierarchical structure of electrical switches. These traditional switches, constrained by bandwidth and port count, are inadequate for escalating demands of data transmission. Future high-performance, large-scale, and green data centers are likely to rely on optical switches offering high bandwidth, low latency, and minimal power consumption. Among various optical switch technologies, silicon photonic switching stands out due to its nanosecond-scale switching time, ultra-low power consumption, high integration potential, and compatibility with CMOS fabrication processes. Progress Scholars have focused on innovating silicon photonic switches configured in a cascaded Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) setup ( refer to Table 1). The phase shift arm within the MZI structure, which modulates the refractive index through different mechanisms, primarily differentiates into electro-optic (EO) switches that leverage the carrier dispersion effect and thermo-optic (TO) switches that operate on thermal effects. Scaling port integration has been a central tenet in silicon photonic switch research, with advancements such as 32x32 EO switches achieved in 2017 and 64x64 TO switches in 2018, boasting rapid link switching time of approximately 1 ns. Generally, at equivalent scales, TO switches exhibit lower loss and superior crosstalk performance, while EO switches offer faster switching speeds and lower energy consumption due to their operational principles. Challenges remain in device calibration, optoelectronic hybrid packaging, and cumulative optical path loss management with network scaling, limiting the realization of largerscale silicon photonic switches. The development of large-scale silicon photonic switches hinges on key technologies such as network architecture optimization, unit device enhancement, loss compensation techniques, switch unit calibration, and optoelectronic hybrid packaging. These technologies are deeply interconnected and necessitate a balanced and integrated approach to achieve improvements. Network architecture forms the cornerstone for constructing large-scale optical switches, requiring comprehensive optimization that addresses switching path control, unit device calibration, and cumulative link loss. While unit device performance has nearly peaked, integrating III-V material devices to compensate for optical link losses poses technical challenges such as material integration and thermal management. Optoelectronic detectors or grating devices for monitoring and calibrating the switch unit states within integrated switch chips strain electrical packaging and raise practicality concerns in large-scale optical switch systems. System-level calibration methods hold promise but require validation for reliability. Optical and electrical packaging constraints present challenges during large-scale optical switch assembly, necessitating suitable optoelectronic hybrid packaging strategies considering network architecture, dimensions, optical coupling techniques, and control requirements Conclusions and Prospects The future demand for high-performance, large-scale green data centers underscores the development trajectory for silicon photonic switches. While silicon photonic technology is highly competitive in achieving low-power, large-scale optical switching devices, current loss and crosstalk performance must be further reduced to meet data center requirements. Progress in heterogeneous integration technologies, system-level unit device calibration methods, and advanced packaging technologies is expected to resolve bottleneck issues arising from increased device integration and calibration complexities. This progression paves the way for the realization of high-performance, highly integrated, and energy-efficient optical switches capable of supporting thousands of ports.

Abstract:The key current challenges for the industrial application of all optical switching networks are energy consumption, transmission rate, spectrum efficiency, and switching throughput. The energy consumption problem is mainly researched in this paper. From the perspective of components and modules, node equipment, and network levels, different enabling technologies are proposed to overcome this problem, which are also evaluated through different experimental demonstrations. First, high-sampling-rate digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and WSS-based ROADM modules are demonstrated as components and modules for energy-efficient all optical switching networks. Then, an all optical transport network test-bed consisting of 10 Pbit/s level all optical switching nodes based on multi-level and multi-planar switching architecture is experimentally demonstrated for the first time, which can reduce power consumption by 43%. A control architecture for energy-efficient all optical switching networks is built with OpenFlow based software defined networking (SDN), and experimental results are given to verify the performance of this control architecture. Finally, we describe an All Optical Networks Innovation (AONI) project in China, which aims to explore transmission, switching, and networking technologies in all optical switching networks, and then two application scenarios are forecast based on the technical breakthroughs of this project.

Abstract:In the electrical/optical hybrid data center networks, the switching fabric is consuming a significant amount of energy. Regarding the fact that the data center traffic is time-varying, this paper studies the energy-efficient scaling approaches to manage the ON/OFF state of optical circuit switches and electrical packet switches to save energy while ensuring service quality. Simulation results show that the energy consumption of the hybrid data centers is saved, and the performance of the data centers is not degraded significantly.

Abstract:Energy consumption is becoming an increasingly important issue throughout the community. For network operators in particular it is a concern as networks expand to deliver increasing traffic levels to increasing numbers of customers. The majority of the energy used by the Internet today is consumed in the access network, and this will continue to be the case for the short-to-mid-term future. Access technologies should thus be a prime focus for energy use mitigation. In this article, we present a detailed analysis of energy consumption in current and future access networks. We present the energy consumption of DSL, HFC networks, passive optical networks, fiber to the node, point-to-point optical systems, UMTS (W-CDMA), and WiMAX. Optical access networks are the most energy efficient of the available access technologies.

Abstract:The communication requirements imposed by the unabated growth in both the size and computational density of modern data centers will soon outpace the fundamental capabilities of conventional electronic interconnection networks. Optical interconnects represent a potentially disruptive technology that can simultaneously satisfy the throughput, latency, and energy demands of these next-generation systems. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end photonic networking platform for future optically-interconnected data center networks. A reconfigurable hybrid photonic network building block and a protocol-agnostic optical network interface comprise the key elements of our proposed system. A modular optical switch fabric prototyping platform is designed and implemented to support a wide variety of potential photonic technologies. We successfully demonstrate nanosecond-scale optical packet-switching at 1-Tb/s per port (40-Gb/s ×25λs) through our prototype, configured as a 4×4 switch, and confirm error-free transmission across all wavelengths. In order to flexibly allocate appropriate bandwidth for heterogeneous applications, we further implement and evaluate a novel wavelength-reconfigurable optical packet- and circuit-switch by utilizing our optical switch platform. Finally, we detail our implementation of an optical network interface card (O-NIC) designed to bridge the gap between the well-established protocol layers utilized in current networks and the physical layer of the proposed photonic networks and demonstrate its functionality by the streaming of high-definition video through the end-to-end optical network.

Abstract:In the last decade, silicon photonic switches are increasingly believed to be potential candidates for replacing the electrical switches in the applications of telecommunication networks, data center and high-throughput computing, due to their low power consumption (Picojoules per bit), large bandwidth (Terabits per second) and high-level integration (Square millimeters per port). This review paper focuses on the state of the art and our perspectives on silicon photonic switching technologies. It starts with a review of three types of fundamental switch engines, i.e., Mach-Zehnder interferometer, micro-ring resonator and micro-electro-mechanical-system actuated waveguide coupler. The working mechanisms are introduced and the key specifications such as insertion loss, crosstalk, switching time, footprint and power consumption are evaluated. Then it is followed by the discussion on the prototype of large-scale silicon photonic fabrics, which are based on the configuration of above-mentioned switch engines. In addition, the key technologies, such as topological architecture, passive components and optoelectronic packaging, to improve the overall performance are summarized. Finally, the critical challenges that might hamper the silicon photonic switching technologies transferring from proof-of-concept in lab to commercialization are also discussed.

Abstract:Efforts in realizing all-optical packet switching are overwhelming in the past decade. While optical packet switching remains an attractive switching paradigm in the long run, technical challenges prohibit it from becoming a practical solution for the ever-growing bandwidth hunger during the next few years. Finding a technically viable way to meet the increasing capacity requirement with good scalability and flexibility becomes a clear pursue for the community. Hybrid packet and circuit switching is considered to be one promising technique in realizing high performance switching at low cost and less energy consumption, by taking the advantage of both packet switching and circuit switching. In this paper, we review existing work in hybrid optical packet and circuit switching. We discuss the key technical challenges in realizing hybrid optical packet and circuit switching. We further introduce our ongoing efforts in building a seamlessly transformable packet/circuit-switching node with hybrid optical and electronic components. We show that in a hybrid node, the scheduling complexity with typical scheduling algorithms may be reduced to half of a node running in full packet switching mode.
Power consumption evaluation of hybrid WDM PON networks for data centers

Abstract:As the requirements for processing power of the datacenters continues to increase rapidly, higher performance networks are required to sustain the increased communication bandwidth demand within the data center. Current data center networks cannot affordably satisfy the required bandwidth of emerging application without consuming excessive power. Optical interconnects provide a viable solution offering high throughput, reduced latency and reduced energy consumption compared to current networks based on commodity switches. This paper presents a novel hybrid approach that use commodity Ethernet switches for intra-rack communication and WDM PON for inter-rack communication. The proposed scheme is based on readily available, passive optical components devices, thus eliminating the power dissipated in Top-of-the-Rack switches for the inter-rack communication. The performance evaluation based on simulation shows up to 10% power reduction with negligible increase on the packet latency.

Abstract:A high-performance packet switch is discussed which uses a photonic interconnect fabric to route very-wideband data packets from input to output. Packet contention is accomplished using a much slower electronic controller, based on the knockout principle operating in parallel with the optical interconnect. Specifically, the use of a wavelength-division-multiplex fabric whereby high-speed (2-4 Gb/s) packets are regenerated before modulating a single-frequency laser at each switch input. The optical signals from various inputs are summed in a star coupler and then broadcast to the different coupler outputs. Each coupler is equipped with a small number (L) of tunable receivers arranged in a parallel manner, each preceded by a power splitter so that up to L simultaneous packets can be received by each output. The L packets so received are stored in an L-input one-output first-in first-out (FIFO) buffer so that the FIFO packet sequence is always guaranteed. Not only does this architecture achieve the best delay-throughput performance, but, remarkably, modularity is such that the optical complexity grows linearly with the number of switch ports./.<>

Abstract:Advanced optical switching architectures, capable of scaling to thousands of ports while achieving low communication latency and reduced power consumption, are becoming a dominant theme for interconnection networks in next-generation data centers and high-performance computing systems. The arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) device, with its inherent ability to perform wavelength routing of many wavelengths in parallel, has been recognized as a promising core component for fast optical switching. Although the AWG is energy efficient (as essentially a passive optical device), has high-bandwidth switching capabilities and has relative simplicity and low cost, an inherent characteristic of switching schemes based on the AWG is potential wavelength oversubscription at switch output ports, which can lead to high packet blocking probabilities. To resolve this traffic congestion, this paper proposes a hybrid optical/electronic buffering scheme and a method for efficiently integrating fiber delay line buffer capacity into the AWG wavelength assignment scheme. The dimensioning of the optical and electronic buffer resources is then carried out using simulations. The results indicate that with the proper dimensioning, the hybrid-buffered AWG switch achieves significantly increased overall energy efficiency, compared to electronic-only buffering, while maintaining low latency and non-blocking performance. We also investigate the computational complexity of the required scheduling algorithm in the hybrid-buffered switch, which in turn allows us to estimate the required processing power of the switch controller.

Abstract:Abstract Optical packet switching (OPS) is an emerging area of research in next-generation datacenter applications. There is an exponential growth in the internet traffic due to applications such as social networking, cloud computing, video streaming, etc. Fiber optical network plays a critical role in various data center (DC) operations. Large bandwidth of the optical fiber made OPS, a promising technology for DCs. Arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) are used more frequently in the core of optical packet switches due to its low insertion loss and wavelength dependent routing pattern. Optical switching function can be performed by AWG if each input port is properly equipped with Tunable wavelength converters (TWCs). This paper presents analysis of four optical packet switches namely AWG and Feedback Loop Buffer based switch, AWG and Electronic Memory based switch, Petabit Optical Switch, AWG and Feedback Loop Buffer Loss Compensated based Switch. Switches are analyzed for Bit Error Rate (BER) and energy consumption. The power and noise analysis is performed for calculating the total power required for correct operation of switch and to determine the BER using physical layer analysis. Minimum power level is determined so that received bits are decoded correctly. Energy consumption per bit is also evaluated to identify architecture consuming less energy in the considered architectures.

Abstract:Internet is becoming a global information infrastructure nowadays. To cope with ever-increasing traffic demands in transport networks, increasing transmission bit rate, processing speed, and switching capacity will lead to increased power consumption of network nodes which is restricting the scalability of networks. The bottleneck of high performance IP network is the operation of switching; most power-consuming part in switching is the subsystem for data processing, table lookup and packet forwarding. There are some obviously drawback at the process of forwarding packet in conventional IP and MPLS networking architecture. In this paper, we provide an innovative concept, Vector Address Switching (VAS) scheme, to support a high performance, energy-effective IP networks and/or Internet. Similar with MPLS, a label based on source routing information is introduced to IP packets for fast interconnection purpose rather than an option as source-route in conventional IP framework; this architecture requires no table lookup, label packets will fast forwarded upon self-routing, the only operation of switch nodes is to strip off part of label. As a result, the price and energy consumption of a switch/router can be evidently cut down. The significant performance improvement of our works is proven in mathematical analysis and simulation.

The generalized multilevel protocol switching seeks to eliminate the asynchronous transfer mode and synchronous optical network layer, hence the implementation of IP over WDM (wave length division multiplexing). Optical burst switching attempts to minimize the need for processing and buffering by aggregating flow of data packets in to burst. Abstract:Components for switching in the optical domain offer substantially different characteristics than electronic switches. However, except in special cases these characteristics do not immediately map well onto the network requirements as currently perceived so that there remains great challenge in establishing a viable technology. A variety of photonic switching technologies are discussed in this context. They are: passive pathway switches with electrical control active-path optical switches with electrical control; optically controlled electronic logic; optically controlled optical logic; and wavelength routing technologies. Optimum component and technology choices are discussed.<>

Novel Approaches to Improve the Capacity of Optical Packet-Switched Networks Without Optical Buffers.

Abstract:Under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of optical packet-switched networks is mainly hampered at the network node by resource contention. The contention is serious constraints on the capacity of the network. Therefore, most of the research activities are focus on the node design. Unlike the existing research activities are focus on the node design, we proposed a new concept--server vision for optical packet-switched networks in this paper. From the point of view of server vision, the network resource is categorized into three types---the access server, the node server and the link server, based on the fact that the network resource performs the different function for the traffic. After present the server vision optical network, we presented two novel approaches--two link server solutions-- to erase the resource contention. One solution is the packet calking, and the other solution is the dual-fiber link. We have developed some scenarios to validate these solutions. Simulation results show that the dual-fiber link can reduce the contention in terms of orders of magnitude in optical packetswitched networks without optical buffers and wavelength conversions.
