Abstract:Energy consumption is becoming an increasingly important issue throughout the community. For network operators in particular it is a concern as networks expand to deliver increasing traffic levels to increasing numbers of customers. The majority of the energy used by the Internet today is consumed in the access network, and this will continue to be the case for the short-to-mid-term future. Access technologies should thus be a prime focus for energy use mitigation. In this article, we present a detailed analysis of energy consumption in current and future access networks. We present the energy consumption of DSL, HFC networks, passive optical networks, fiber to the node, point-to-point optical systems, UMTS (W-CDMA), and WiMAX. Optical access networks are the most energy efficient of the available access technologies.

Abstract:Higher capacity and larger scales have always been the top targets for the evolution of optical access networks, driven by the ever-increasing demand from the end users. One thing that started to attract wide attention not long ago, but with at least equal importance as capacity and scale, is energy efficiency, a metric essential nowadays as human beings are confronted with severe environmental issues like global warming, air pollution, and so on. Here, different from the conventional energy consumption analysis of tree-topology networks, we propose an effective energy consumption calculation method to compare the energy efficiency of the tree-topology 10 gigabit ethernet passive optical network (10G-EPON) and ring-topology time-and wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON), two experimental networks deployed in China. Numerical results show that the ring-topology TWDM-PON networks with 2, 4, 8, and 16 wavelengths are more energy efficient than the tree-topology 10G-EPON, although 10G-EPON consumes less energy. Also, TWDM-PON with four wavelengths is the most energy-efficient network candidate and saves 58.7% more energy than 10G-EPON when fully loaded. Abstract:High capacity networks are needed for enormous quantity of internet traffic, which is driven by both the exponential growth of the number of people using the internet and the ongoing introduction of new high-bandwidth requiring applications. Combining optical and wireless technologies is a new and promising access network solution. The energy efficiency of telecommunication networks is therefore attracting increasing attention today than in the past. This study is aimed at evaluating energy efficiency of optical-wireless access network which combines Passive Optical Network (PON) and Long Term Evolution - Advanced (LTE-A) networks into one. The network was designed using Optimum Network Engineering Tool (OPNET) modeler software. Traffic was generated using inbuilt tools provided in the OPNET modeler software. Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) algorithm was applied on the network and simulation was carried out using the simulation tool provided by OPNET to evaluate the effect of the DBA algorithm on the energy consumption and efficiency in the network. The findings showed energy utilization of 430 watt-second when DBA algorithm was applied on the access network as against 700 watt-second when it was not activated. This shows a 38.6% energy conservation. It was concluded that with the application of energy saving techniques to combined optical-wireless access network, substantial energy could be conserved even in the presence of heavy traffic without compromising the quality of service of the access network.

Abstract:Energy efficiency has become a major paradigm in the design and operation of future telecommunication networks. Recent studies show that the aggregate power consumption of in-building IT networks (residential and office) is massive and comparable with that of data centers due to the large number of buildings. In this paper, we analyze the energy efficiency of next-generation in-building IT networks to deliver high-speed mobile access to end users via integrated optical/wireless networks using Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) technology. Based on a validated energy efficiency model, our results show that although individual point-to-point RoF links are not as energy efficient as legacy Baseband-over-Fiber links, RoF networks may actually be more energy-efficient when designed keenly with small cells sizes and when the static energy consumption of the remote units is above a particular threshold. Under the assumptions used in this paper, we show that the DRoF-based architectures can be designed to more energy efficient for cell sizes <17m.

Abstract:The key current challenges for the industrial application of all optical switching networks are energy consumption, transmission rate, spectrum efficiency, and switching throughput. The energy consumption problem is mainly researched in this paper. From the perspective of components and modules, node equipment, and network levels, different enabling technologies are proposed to overcome this problem, which are also evaluated through different experimental demonstrations. First, high-sampling-rate digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and WSS-based ROADM modules are demonstrated as components and modules for energy-efficient all optical switching networks. Then, an all optical transport network test-bed consisting of 10 Pbit/s level all optical switching nodes based on multi-level and multi-planar switching architecture is experimentally demonstrated for the first time, which can reduce power consumption by 43%. A control architecture for energy-efficient all optical switching networks is built with OpenFlow based software defined networking (SDN), and experimental results are given to verify the performance of this control architecture. Finally, we describe an All Optical Networks Innovation (AONI) project in China, which aims to explore transmission, switching, and networking technologies in all optical switching networks, and then two application scenarios are forecast based on the technical breakthroughs of this project.

Abstract:Due to the growing impact of the information and communications technology (ICT) sector on electricity usage and greenhouse gas emissions, telecommunication networks require new solutions which will enable the improvement of the energy efficiency of networks. Access networks, which are responsible for the last mile of connectivity and also for one of the largest shares in network energy consumption, are viable candidates for the implementation of new protocols, models and methods which will contribute to the reduction of the energy consumption of such networks. Among the different types of access networks, hybrid fiber–wireless (FiWi) networks are a type of network that combines the capacity and reliability of optical networks with the flexibility and availability of wireless networks, and as such, FiWi networks have begun to be extensively used in modern access networks. However, due to the advent of high-bandwidth applications and Internet of Things networks, the increased energy consumption of FiWi networks has become one of the most concerning challenges required to be addressed. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the progress in approaches for improving the energy efficiency (EE) of different types of FiWi networks, which include the radio-and-fiber (R&F) networks, the radio-over-fiber networks (RoF), the FiWi networks based on multi-access edge computing (MEC) and the software-defined network (SDN)-based FiWi networks. It also discusses future directions for improving the EE in the FiWi networks.

Abstract:This article provides an overview of a network-based model of power consumption in Internet infrastructure. This model provides insight into how different parts of the Internet will contribute to network power as Internet access increase over time. The model shows that today the access network dominates the Internet's power consumption and, as access speeds grow, the core network routers will dominate power consumption. The power consumption of data centers and content distribution networks is dominated by the power consumption of data storage for material that is infrequently downloaded and by the transport of the data for material that is frequently downloaded. Based on the model several strategies to improve the energy efficiency of the Internet are presented.

Abstract:The energy crisis and environmental protection are gaining increasing concern in recent years. ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has a significant impact on the total electricity consumption all over the world. Telecom networks, being an important part of ICT, consume significant energy since more network equipment is deployed annually. Specifically, in IP-over-WDM networks, energy is consumed by network elements at both IP and WDM layers. Routers in the IP layer are the largest energy consumer in this architecture, and current network infrastructures have no energy-saving scheme, so a large amount of energy is wasted when traffic load is low. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to save energy in IP-over-WDM networks by shutting down idle line cards and chassis of routers based on time-of-the-day network traffic variation. A method based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is proposed to ensure that the energy cost incurred by the IP routers and optical cross-connects is minimized by our approach. We also propose some possible approaches to minimize potential traffic disruption when the network elements are shut down.

Power consumption evaluation of hybrid WDM PON networks for data centers

Abstract:As the requirements for processing power of the datacenters continues to increase rapidly, higher performance networks are required to sustain the increased communication bandwidth demand within the data center. Current data center networks cannot affordably satisfy the required bandwidth of emerging application without consuming excessive power. Optical interconnects provide a viable solution offering high throughput, reduced latency and reduced energy consumption compared to current networks based on commodity switches. This paper presents a novel hybrid approach that use commodity Ethernet switches for intra-rack communication and WDM PON for inter-rack communication. The proposed scheme is based on readily available, passive optical components devices, thus eliminating the power dissipated in Top-of-the-Rack switches for the inter-rack communication. The performance evaluation based on simulation shows up to 10% power reduction with negligible increase on the packet latency.

Abstract:Environmental concerns have motivated network designers to further reduce energy consumption of access networks. This paper focuses on reducing energy consumption of Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) as one of the most efficient transmission technologies for broadband access. In EPON, the downstream traffic is sent from the optical line terminal (OLT) located at the central office to all optical network units (ONUs). Each ONU checks all arrival downstream packets and selects the downstream packets destined to itself. Therefore, receivers at ONUs have to always stay awake, thus consuming a large amount of energy. Contrariwise, an ONU transmitter can be triggered by the arrival of the upstream traffic and so it can go to the low power mode when no traffic is observed. Putting ONUs into the low power mode during light traffic is a known strategy for energy saving. In this article, we address the downstream challenge and also improve the ONU transmitter sleep time by proposing a simple sleep control scheme. We also propose an upstream and a downstream sleep-aware traffic scheduling scheme to avoid missing the packets during the sleep states. The proposed sleep control scheme does not need the handshake process and is based on the mutual inference at OLT and ONU. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can save energy as much as 60% when the network traffic is light.

Abstract:Cloud radio access network (C-RAN) is a new architecture to meet the ever increasing internet data traffic. In particular, the operating expense (OPEX), mainly the energy consumption, of C-RAN is an issue of common concern. Several former works in this area lacked the essential consideration for the optical front-haul part, as a result that it cannot provide overall energy consumption study for the whole system. In this paper, we analyze the energy consume problem in a new C-RAN architecture, i. e., the ring-topology time-wavelength division multiplexing (TWDM) passive optical network (PON) front-haul enabled C-RAN, considering the requirements for large transmission capacity, high energy efficiency, and the appropriate utilization in the large-scale and densely populated cities. After bringing in this optical front-haul and considering the quality of service, a network traffic modeling is provided to analyze the energy problem based on queueing theory. We also conduct the network optimization to ensure that the system works in the most energy-efficient state. Besides, the energy comparisons among the ring-topology TWDMPON front-haul enabled C-RAN, the time division multiplexing (TDM) PON enabled C-RAN and the ring-topology TWDM-PONLTE architecture have also been made. According to the numerical results, the new C-RAN, after energy optimization, can save up to 58.1% energy compared with the TWDM-PON-LTE architecture, and also has a slight advantage over the TDM-PON enabled C-RAN (saving more than 2% energy), demonstrating its broad application prospects and large potential in the future.

Abstract:With the dynamic demands and stringent requirements of various applications, networks need to be high-performance, scalable, and adaptive to changes. Researchers and industries view network softwarization as the best enabler for the evolution of networking to tackle current and prospective challenges. Network softwarization must provide programmability and flexibility to network infrastructures and allow agile management, along with higher control for operators. While satisfying the demands and requirements of network services, energy cannot be overlooked, considering the effects on the sustainability of the environment and business. This paper discusses energy efficiency in modern and future networks with three network softwarization technologies: SDN, NFV, and NS, introduced in an energy-oriented context. With that framework in mind, we review the literature based on network scenarios, control/MANO layers, and energy-efficiency strategies. Following that, we compare the references regarding approach, evaluation method, criterion, and metric attributes to demonstrate the state-of-the-art. Last, we analyze the classified literature, summarize lessons learned, and present ten essential concerns to open discussions about future research opportunities on energy-efficient softwarized networks.

Abstract:In the electrical/optical hybrid data center networks, the switching fabric is consuming a significant amount of energy. Regarding the fact that the data center traffic is time-varying, this paper studies the energy-efficient scaling approaches to manage the ON/OFF state of optical circuit switches and electrical packet switches to save energy while ensuring service quality. Simulation results show that the energy consumption of the hybrid data centers is saved, and the performance of the data centers is not degraded significantly.
